We came here to watch the World Cup final. Their outdoor patio is great for a group. They have shade and a nice big tv. The food was good and of course the drinks. They have rootbeer floats! Get one. I somehow lived nearby for 2 years and had no idea this place existed until this week. I thought it was Rooftop Brew Co because they had a huge mural that caught my eye. The entrance was a bit confusing because there's not really a path to the door--it's between parked cars and a tree and patio. We had to duck under the tree to get to the door. The patio looked really nice though! The place itself was nice and looked freshly painted, so I thought it was new until I looked on Yelp and saw that it had been around for years. It was seat yourself when we went, and the server arrived within a couple of minutes. Beers were excellent. Food was pretty good, but I always find it frustrating to have to pay $5 extra for fries. Since that felt like a rip off, we opted for a veggie slider on the side instead, which was the same price. Veggie slider was really good, and the honey sriracha aioli, recommended by our server, was awesome. The fish sandwich was pretty tasty but much smaller than I was expecting, and felt expensive for the size and lack of side dish. We also got a bowl of vegetarian chili, which was good but not my favorite. Very smoky, the type of chili that is usually paired with barbecue. I just prefer my chili a bit more tomatoey, but I'm sure plenty of people like a smoky chili. There was a big group of people playing cribbage, which I thought was fun and charming! Solid, cozy spot for bar food and good brews. Come in out of the cold and dig in to the menu of comforting sandwiches and burgers. Sliders are great to pair as snacks with beers. For this the Jolly Royal slider is straightforward but the combination of charred beef and caramelized onions does the trick. Hope the oyster po' lil oyster slider makes a return. Nice beers on regular rotation with plenty of IPA options. It's got a worn PNW charm that makes Jolly Roger an inviting spot for pints and some food. read more

I've been coming here intermittently for over 15 years. It has always been good. Like most PNW breweries, it's IPA heavy, but they do good dark ales also and I've liked their Christmas beer. Great for a casual date night but also works fine to bring the kids. And hey, pirate decor, you can't go wrong! They can get pretty slammed on weekends. The staff are friendly when they do, but be prepared to wait a good 10 minutes for a beer. Still a place I try to hit when I'm in town. read more

Do you love onion rings? Me too! The Jolly Roger offers up some of the best onion rings in Seattle, second only to the rings at the Wedgwood Broiler, in my opinion. Crispy, hot, and fully cooked inside, 9 huge donut-sized rings arrive at the table as an artfully stacked tower, a golden monument to deep-fried savory crunchiness. And this is a monument that you can take down quickly; just don't burn your tongue as you eat your way to the bottom. Other menu items are also tasty. The seafood (and burgers) are very good, and all three of us ordered a seasonal gerkensalat plate because we are all pickle freaks. We could have just shared one plate (except we didn't). I've been here five or six times since it opened, and it's always a solid choice. Good food, friendly service, cold beers and the second best onion rings in Seattle are waiting for you at the Jolly Roger in Ballard. Five stars! read more

We ate there last night. It was cosy and decorated for the holidays. The food is always excellent and at a good price. I love their burgers, fish and chips, and chili, if available. Check their own website (not a search engine) for the accurate kitchen hours. Disappointing if the kitchen has just closed and you're looking forward to their food! Only two blocks from Trader Joe's in Ballard. Excellent service. The menus posted here are out of date. it's easy to overlook because it's not beside the other breweries. I have never had a bad experience here. The service is always exceptional, I've never not had a great meal here, and the beer is the icing on the cake. I love the staff here. Gerardo is one of the nicest people around. He makes you feel more than welcome here. It's superb! The lil' jolly royal sliders are a must and so is the caeser salad with a jalapeno vinaigrette! Oh, I love their variety of sauces: Jolly Roger Habanero BBQ, Nightwatch Stone-ground Mustard, Cactus and roasted chili Aioli, and Root Beer-Vanilla BBQ. My must have beer for the season is the Jolly Roger Christmas Ale; I think it's my all time favorite. Why can't it be winter year round? As much as I hate the colder weather, this frosty beverage rocks and warms me up! I heard it's 9.4% this year from the brewer named Matt. My favorite place to go for lunch on Wednesdays! What a gem! A co-worker brought me here today - I would have never known it existed eventhough I've been in the area a million times! Very inexpensive tasty food. From classics like sliders, fun things like fried bacon and oyster po' boys, to surprises like Pho - the menu is huge and everything we had was delicious. They have a deck too! Came here after yoga class and to further seek relaxation in a...beer. The bf had come here weeks prior upon his arrival to Seattle. He wanted to bring me here because he figured that I may like what they had to offer on tap. And did I! The bf ordered some steak dinner and I ordered myself the Nightwatch Dark Amber Ale (5.5% alc/vol Dark amber in color, Nightwatch is smooth and mellow with a subtle roast flavor and gentle hopping from Mt. Hood and Saaz hops. A true Northwestern original-style ale). I also order these ginormous onion rings that were the paired appetizer for this beer. The bf was right about me liking the beer here as I had chosen a very yummy one. The place is decorated with a Pirates of the Carribean feel sans Johnny Depp and the Disney animatronics. We were here on a late Friday afternoon around quittin' time and the place was packed, very lively. We will definitely be back again so that I may tap the tap one by one and to try the Ballard Poutine which I was eyeballing. read more

I've stopped in on multiple occasions to have a late lunch and a cold pint. Each time I go, I tell myself that I'll order something else from their lunch menu but I can't do it. Their Lil' Mahi sandwiches have a nefarious hold on me and I cave every time. They are a favourite because of their simplicity. The fish is pan seared and served on a fat little bun with our roasted jalapeño tartar and shredded cabbage. Or if you crave cow, grab some of their wickedly good Lil' Royals. Those damned things are also quite addictive with your choice of housemade sauces (Jolly Roger Habanero BBQ, Nightwatch Stone-ground Mustard, or Root Beer-Vanilla BBQ.) Looking for a great appetizer for a few people or have a great capacity for fried things? Order the Smokers... these are massive hand-cut onion rings smoked with apple wood and hops, double breaded and fried. These come with the same roasted jalapeño tartar as the Mahi sandwiches. They also have fried pickles AND fried bacon. Yeah, you heard right. It borders on the obscene but they have pepper bacon dipped in a dark amber and ghost chili batter, fried crisp and served with maple-chive aioli. I've never been brave enough to order it but I've seen it parade through to other tables. The food is consistently tasty with excellent beers. There have been days when I wish I had errands in Ballard so I could fit lunch in at the Taproom. I love their Lil' Mahi sandwiches THAT much. And a pint or two of the Nightwatch Dark Amber or Bosun's Black will hit the spot quite nicely. Speaking of spots, parking in their small lot or on the street. I've never had an issue but we don't really go during peak times either. The bathrooms have always been clean with speedy competent service. If you're in the area and want to check out their beers, they offer a tasting sampler of all of their beers for $8 or so. You won't be disappointed! read more

I did not have any expectations when I visited this restaurant. We had a long afternoon of visiting various breweries and you can only take so many pretzels! He got a flight, I got lemonade. The lemonade was pretty tasty! We wanted a quick snack prior to a large dinner. We decided on the fried pickles and 3 lil veggie royals. The fried pickles were fantastic! Initially I thought about the onion rings based on other reviews. But these were delicious! The lil veggie sliders were a hit! My BF who never had veggie burgers before enjoyed these beauties. THE LOWDOWN: The beers I drink are pale ale, Tripel and Ales. My wife like their Hefe so much that we will buy growlers of it to take home. Not sure if they use to be just a brewery by Hilliards, and just recently moved into the Jolly Roger Taproom... but it would have been nice to know, because the map that YELP gave us showed Maritime Brewing was next door to Hilliards. (Which it is clearly NOT.) I give this place a 3.5, which defaults to a 3 in yelp world. I honestly didnt care for their beers. We tried a sampler which was around $8 and we got to choose 6 or 7 tastes. I did like that they gave you a placemat paper and you wrote in the circles which beers you wanted. That was dope. They had decent food too. My husband got their sliders and fries. But not good enough to get me to go back there. So many good micro-breweries in the Ballard area, this was so far my least favorite. read more

After reading so many great reviews about the onion rings, we decided to get a large order. They are homemade, but I thought they were pretty tasteless and needed some salt. Jolly Roger Xmas ale opening night!! Well, for the last three years, I have looked forward to the debut of the JRCA, and it never disappoints. I even left work an hour early to drive from Kent all the way to Ballard just to be a part of this annual seasonal celebration. Nothing ushers in winter festivities like day lights savings time, red leaves on the ground and a frosty glass of cinnamon brown 8.6% abv goodness. It takes better on tap then I remember, some beers are just better that way. I decided to accompany my JRCA (which is a meal in itself) with sliders and royales ( sliders with cheese and onions ). They were on special, a six pack for only $5.99 and they were pretty damn good. I also tried a caesar salad and some fried raviolis. The Raviolis were by far the best! I love unique foods that I have never tried before, and although it sounds a little weird, those raviolis accompanied my beer wonderfully. Highly recommended! They are even on the HH menu if you get there before six. The place is busy and the staff is hurried, but in this kind of bar, I just don't mind flagging my sever down, and they didn't seem to mind either. Onion rings are AMAZING! This local bar held a certain charm to it. It felt like a "Cheers" type of place, you know the place where everybody knows your name? lol People were super friendly and the service was pretty great as well. We were first seated by the door and the second another table opened the host moved us without us asking- so we wouldn't be freezing by the door. We pretty much ordered everything off the menu. Prices were good and portions were generous. However- everyone on yelp had raved about their Mahi Mahi Sliders and I felt like it just wasn't that great. I actually enjoyed the regular sliders more. The bread was perfect! We also got fries, deep fried pickle chips ( that are not chips but spears- also not that great, would have been better if they were chips) and the onion rings The onion rings could possibly be the best I've had!!! I used to love the old Jolly Roger tucked next to the Ballard Bridge. It had such a great Pirate Bar vibe, that I do miss in the new location. Still, I do enjoy that there is more seating in this location, as well as an outdoor area. Went here for a quick brewery stop during a little Seattle tour we were giving my Boyfriend's mom. We split the sampler, although I've tried most the beers before. I have to say, Maritime makes some tasty brews! I love the Flagship Red, but there is just something about their Pilsner which makes my tongue happy. We didn't eat here on this occasion, but l do remember the fish sliders being tasty. Hence 4 until it arrives Food update: 5 stars The beef hand made patty slider with grilled onion and a smokey cheddar cheese - phenomenal with rich under tones in the beef, cheese and onions. The red beans and rice is excellent! The spice heat is high - know that going into the dish. The hush puppy's had a bit of jalapeño cooked in them as well. Great beer and tasty food. I want to call out one thing about this place that doesn't get touched on in other reviews. They're great for kids. Their kids menu features sandwiches and sliders and noodles in the $3-$4 range. The portions are right on for the under-10 crowd and the plates come with veggies. The root beer is very good (depending on the size of your kid, could be split). It's such a novelty that a restaurant for adults doesn't screw up on their kids menu and sling out any old overpriced day-glo noodle paste. All the food at Jolly Roger is top notch. I came here to taste beer. I got no food, but it smelled good in there, and I came in at the tail end of the lunch period (around 2pm). It was a bit strange that quite a few of their beers were unavailable. In fact, they said it was an "all yellow beer" day. I don't know if that was a Halloween gimmick or what... but it kinda seemed strange. Indeed. Even though I got 5 different kinds of beer, they were all a bright yellow. Nope... I've never seen a bright yellow IPA, although I can't call it completely incorrect or anything. Beer color is often confused with strength or gravity, when in fact it's more related to how the malts are treated. Guinness is a very dark beer because the malts are roasted a while... and despite being flavorful, it's not very strong. I digress. Anyway, it was still a bit weird. The beers I had were (ranked in order of most favorite): 1. Imperial IPA: strong, hoppy, with a nice level of maltiness. 2. Islander DH Pale Ale: nice bitterness 3. Portage Bay Pilsner: classic, very crisp 4. Clipper Gold Hefeweizen: almost sweet. 5. Old Seattle Lager: weak, watery... tasted like cheap beer. Yeah the only one I didn't care for was the OSL. Nothing blew me away as amazing, but the price was pretty good for the sampler. I think it was like $6.50 or something. If I lived in Seattle, I'd still probably come here every now and then. The bar itself was reasonably comfortable and the bathroom was clean (at 2pm anyway). It's 3.5 stars really. Had all the beers been available, perhaps a four. read more
