After being a loyal client, I was surprised and hurt when he suddenly decided he no longer wanted to work with me simply because I chose to get a haircut elsewhere. I first went to Jonathan about three years ago after I decided to grow my hair out and Yelped "men's long hair Santa Monica." I'm not an actor, just a moderately good-looking, middle-aged guy who can't grow a good beard but does have a quality head of hair. Think Wolverine, but skinnier and no special skeleton. Jonathan did more than just help me grow out a quality mop, he gave me great hair care advice. He's the most expensive stylist I've regularly used to date (probably because he's the first non-barber I've seen regularly), but the price is totally worth it. Main reasons: a) He does great work b) He's honest and funny and you're sitting in a chair getting your hair cut so why not have a good conversation? c) I get clean-ups in between regular cuts at no extra cost. That's big for me because even though I can't grow a good beard, I can grow hair down my neck faster than most and it's nice to get that taken care of more regularly My hair is back to not-so-long by West LA standards, and I think Jonathan does an even better job than ever. I'm a busy mom of 3 who would rather be playing volleyball than getting a haircut (though I do love a good haircut, it's just difficult to find the right time to fit one in). His salon is private, so while you won't get to eavesdrop on any juicy conversations, you do get spill the t in the privacy of your own room. Think of this as a confessional. Jonathan's hours are very flexible for a 9-6 working girl, which is always appreciative. I also appreciate the masterful way he does my highlights... Because they are so well placed and blended, I can go longer than the usual 6-8 weeks before I have to get a touch up. Saving me serious $$$ over the years! Most importantly, Jonathan is a genuinely good person and will always listen to what you want, while also being patient with you if you decide what you actually might want is to go just a little bit shorter... even though he just finished blow drying your hair. so im not really into writing terrible reviews, esp for people trying to do their thing with their own small business... but... these reviews dont reflect my experience and i use yelp so much i feel like it is my duty. its been two weeks and i seriously hate my hair more every day. i went to get my hair "corrected" from a bad tint job. i showed a pic that had chunky, beachy, hair. i explained that i was not happy with the red tint, and basically my ONE request was there not be a line from where my hair had grown out. anyways- i still have the line. maybe its a tad more subtle. and instead of beachy highlights, maybe low lights to get the desired look, he just did a typical dated looking weave. tiny little streaks of bleach. then he said he would fix the blunt haircut i had gotten. he maybe spent 5 minutes cutting it- doing who knows what- and it looks the exact same maybe even worse. then he charged me for a haircut ($75) and full highlights. i feel like i got so ripped off. read more

LA must be the home of shitty stylists because I went through quite a few before I got to Jonathan.
