From the very beginning, Lauren made me feel safe, supported, and completely cared for. She has such a calming presence, and she gave me the confidence I didn't even know I had. Lauren was with us every step of the way--starting months before I delivered--helping us prepare for labor and delivery with thoughtful education, helpful advice, and so much reassurance. When it came time for labor, she advocated for me in ways I will forever be grateful for. Her expertise not only helped move my labor along more efficiently, but she also helped me manage the discomfort in ways that made such a difference. Both my husband and I felt so thankful she was by our side. Having our first baby felt a lot less overwhelming because Lauren was there guiding and supporting us through it all. She even came to visit after our son was born, which meant so much to us. I genuinely cannot imagine having another baby without her. If you're considering hiring Lauren--do it. I cannot recommend her more highly. She is an incredible doula and an even more incredible person.

We originally planned to give birth at a birth center, but at 36 weeks our plans had to change due to complications. During what could have been an overwhelming and stressful time, Merrie was an absolute anchor. She was always available by phone or text and took the time to walk us through every option, helping us understand and process what our medical providers were recommending. When our plans shifted suddenly and we felt backed into a corner about what to do next, Merrie helped us calmly and thoughtfully navigate all of our choices so we could choose the path that felt right for us. Merrie's experience truly shows it felt like she had seen it all before and could clearly explain what might happen and what options we would have in each scenario. Her calm, grounding presence made her such a comforting person to have in the birthing room, and I always felt complete trust in her guidance and support. No matter what direction we chose, she was fully there for us. Her support didn't stop at birth. She continued to help us postpartum, offering guidance on babywearing, breastfeeding, and adjusting to life with a newborn. We felt so supported every step of the way. I truly cannot recommend Merrie highly enough. If you are looking for a doula who is compassionate, experienced, steady, and deeply supportive, Merrie is the best.

I had a home birth with Janet 6 months ago for my second child, a baby girl. I found Janet at 30…read moreweeks after I had left another midwife who I felt did not listen to my concerns about getting tested for a genetic mutation. The other midwife would not test me, even though the test was a simple blood test. I expressed my concerns to Janet and she ordered a test for me without question, even though she disagreed with me on the relevance of the mutation to pregnancy. Janet listened and eased my fears and walked me through everything I could need to know about how home births usually play out. I had told her that the birth of my son had been traumatic both physically and mentally, and she took that into consideration to make sure that both my mind and my body were cared for during labor. She took all measures necessary to make sure I did not feel violated during this labor as I had with my son. I called Janet to my house once my contractions were close together and unignorable. When she got there, my contractions came erratically and far apart. She stayed for a few hours to see if they would pick back up, and they didn't. She said "I don't think you're in labor." I said, "That's not possible." And she said, "Okay. I'll stay." It is so refreshing to have a medical professional take you seriously and BELIEVE you when you tell her about your own body. About twelve hours of erratic contractions later, Janet informed me that she thought my waters were preventing the baby from dropping down, and asked me whether it would be okay to break my waters. After a few questions, I agreed. She broke my waters and immediately I felt I had to push. Three pushes later I had my baby in my arms. Throughout the intensity of that time, Janet was there encouraging me and making sure I knew I could do it. Thanks in part to her care, I can say that that day is the most proud I've ever been of myself and I am empowered knowing that I'm capable of that degree of strength.

My review is for Janet Schwab particularly. For a CNM, her bedside manner leaves something to be…read moredesired. She knows her stuff, but her 35+ years of experience leave her stuck in her ways. I utilized the Hypnobabies program during my pregnancy and birth, and I always felt like Janet did an internal eye roll anytime I mentioned it. When telling her my preferences for my birth plan, I was basically told how SHE does things and that nearly all of my choices were "wrong." So why did I continue to work with her? To put it simply, she was the only CNM in the state that did home births. Everyone else spoke so highly of her, I never understood the hype. What's worse is that the birth of my daughter took a sharp left turn, and I ultimately had to get a c-section. The level of empathy and follow-up from Janet was subpar at best...and for the hefty bill we paid for her, my dollars could've easily been better spent elsewhere. I was diagnosed with postpartum depression shortly after my daughter's birth. Janet couldn't seem to care less, and all I felt was judgment for wanting to quit breastfeeding. To get an idea for her lack of empathy, just see the attached image of the last text I ever sent to her. It was 6 weeks after my daughter's birth, and she NEVER followed up to see how I was doing or how I was handling the postpartum depression. The last I spoke to her on the phone was to collect our credit card for the final bill. By the time I was due for my 6-week postpartum check up her bill was already paid...so why bother, right?

I arrived open-minded and hopeful, but after my experiences here, I've decided to seek care elsewhere. I've experienced two pregnancy losses while under the care of this practice, and during an already difficult time, the care I received often felt more one-size-fits-all than individualized. I recognize that this may be influenced by the volume of patients or broader systems within pregnancy care, but for me, it meant that I didn't always feel truly seen or held as an individual with a unqiue history. The midwife I worked with was kind, but on more than one occasion she appeared unfamiliar with important details of my medical history. After experiencing my first pregnancy loss with her, it was difficult to return just three months later and realize she had not reviewed my chart before coming in to discuss my second loss. In that moment, the lack of preparation felt especially painful. Scheduling appointments was also challenging, and after my second loss I waited an additional 45 minutes to see a doctor, which added to an already emotionally difficult experience. After my second pregnancy loss, I was not offered guidance around possible testing, follow-up options, or next steps unless I explicitly asked. Additionally, after an ultrasound confirmed a pregnancy loss, I was told the earliest available appointment for the necessary procedure was six days later, which felt unreasonable and I was forced to complete the procedure at an entirely different practice. I don't share this to place blame, but rather to help others make an informed decision. If you are someone seeking highly personalized, proactive care, especially after loss or if your pregnancy journey may not be straightforward, this may not be the best fit. For those with uncomplicated pregnancies who are comfortable with a more standardized approach, this practice may work well.

She is extremely knowledgeable on the biological and physiological levels as well as able to meet a pregnant woman on the spirit and emotional levels. To me this was imperative for me to feel held, cared for, and met through the comprehensive transformation that occurs during pregnancy. She is incredibly empowering to the woman, guiding and supporting her to follow her intuition and instinct. I loved that she often wouldn't tell me what choices to make but would share the relevant information while supporting me to trust my inherent wisdom. She deeply recognizes each woman's journey of becoming a mama is unique and there is not a one size fits all to decisions. She has the capacity to be with any emotions, fears or concerns that may arise as well as connecting with the baby on an energetic and heart level too. I felt so solid with Astrid's care knowing that she'd be able to be with anything that might arise during the journey and during the birth. She is also an incredible herbalist and I love the ways she supports through her wisdom in that arena too, as well as with Mayan abdominal massage. Astrid is deeply wise, incredibly smart and knowledgeable, emotionally intelligent and a heart centered mystic. Her dedication to supporting women to feel empowered in their birth experience emanates through her devoted care. I truly couldn't imagine a more aligned midwife for me.
