Tried the Wednesday $5 fried fish sandwich. The fish itself is nicely cooked and tasty. The side of collard greens? Over-salted to the point of being nearly inedible. The wait time for the order of fish? Would you believe an hour - with no way to call in the order or order online. You just have to go to the restaurant, place your order and cool your heels for an hour. We've been wanting to try the fish special for a while, but it's probably not an experience we'll be willing to repeat given there's no way to place an advance order to cut down on the wait time. read more

Great food delivery was quick. I ordered fried shrimp and fish. They were seasoned good. Also ordered lemon pepper wings they were just ok. The description said sauce but it was a dry rub that was kind of too salty. For sides, I ordered collards, mac and cheese and candied yams. All were tasty, but they need to change the description what I got was not candied yams.. it was a sweet potato casserole or mashed sweet potatoes minus the toppings. This spot has excellent side dishes.. I ordered the Mac and cheese and potato salad. Both dishes were amazing! I even made a comment to my mother that it tasted just like hers and thats a huge compliment. If you like acidity and fresh peppers you will love their potato salad it taste really good.. Excited to go back and get a whole meal in the near future. Only reason I removed 1 star is because they have to get better at their delivery service, it took over an hour for my food to be delivered. Idk what that other reviewer is talking about because the fish is absolute trash. ITS NOT FILET!!! STILL HAD ALL THE BONES IN IT. The fish wasn't even seasoned that well at all. I went to this restaurant because my Caucasian friend who loves soul food selected this place. We never visited this place before. We entered and I pointed at the refrigerator because I was excited to see banana pudding. The woman at the front desk asked why was I pointing at the fridge. I ordered my food to go first prior to ordering the food my friend and I were going to sit there and eat. The woman then said "let's get your food ordered that you will eat here first." She had a very unpleasant disposition. She said "why are you asking for that?" I asked because I wanted to know if they had Mac and cheese since they did not have catfish. She spoke to me so nasty and said " just order your food! I'll let you know!" I was about to show the hell out! Ok?!?!. I did not want to cause a scene. My Caucasian friend ordered and I paid for all the food. $48 and they don't accept credit or debit cards! I had to cashapp them. So at that point I decided to just keep quiet. What I found most interesting was that she was very very very polite to my Caucasian friend and she went on to describe how she prepared the tartar sauce from scratch. She did give us complimentary drinks. The fried fish was good. The collard greens were tragic! Bitter and dry. The mac and cheese was ok. Conclusion: the food was a 2 out of 5. This restaurant is not geared towards black people who are diverse from Bergen county who hang with white, brown, or yellow people! They are not about diversity equity and inclusion! I went in here to pickup an order. Woman at the counter just kept chatting with the guy in front of me as if my time did not matter. After waiting on her to finish running her mouth when I went to order she said "they only cook one of the items (fish?) on sunday". Or something to that effect. In the end I just left. Food is amazing. Women on the phone are rude AF. They also don't cancel your order, simply just don't make it at all and blame it on Uber Driver. When I told them it was thru the Seamless app, not Uber, they'd never even heard of it. This was just one of many experiences I had dealing with the horrible customer service over the phone combined with my order either not showing up or being cancelled. Too bad bc the food is great, but I'm not going to deal with people that have ZERO awareness of customer service or being just plain old polite. I was here on Saturday with a friend....I initially only wanted a fried whiting sandwich but she and I both wanted the same thing and since adding the two sides was only 4$ more (they are 3$ a piece), we each ordered a side...I chose mac n cheese and she the collards with smoked turkey......We were both equally pleased with our respective meals. The fish was properly seasoned (I hate over seasoned food especially fish), and the mac n cheese was absolutely cheesy. If I can give this place half a star I would. I sent my husband to order 10 pieces of fish because I am feeling a little under the weather and too weak to cook . He was told that is too much fish to order and they need enough for their customers . I never went to a restaurant that didn't want businesses. NEVER ordering from here! I wish i read the reviews before ordering. I TRIED to order through DoorDash. They accepted my order, charged my credit card and even gave me an arrival time with a delivery guys name. About 45 minutes after my order was placed (5 minutes before it was to be delivered) they cancelled my order! The only notification i received was from a DoorDash e-mail. To be honest, Mr. G's was my go-to since I rarely trust soul food restaurants lol. It's either too expensive, never open, or the customer service is so terrible to the point they seem annoyed that you want to eat there. I work in the restaurant business, so I know at times it can be a bit much, but to have an attitude EVERY time someone walks in???? Ommgg relax! The people at JonJax are so fun, they even do contests for gift cards, the wait isn't really long. The food is ALWAYS made fresh (I burned my tongue 3 different times because I chose to just dig in) and my boyfriend had some Mac and cheese left over and it tasted even better the next day! And for the price?? I honestly thought it was gonna be like $40 and it was half that price.
