BBQ Chicken Lunch with cabbage and roasted potatoes
    Dolly C.

    - Spacious fast-food spot with plenty of seating that extends deep into the restaurant - We parked on the street out front, but noticed signage at the entrance indicating free parking is available in the rear - Restaurant was empty when we arrived for lunch around 12 p.m. on a Friday; the lunch crowd began to trickle in as we were eating - Loud hip-hop music playing in the background - Employee behind the counter was attentive and patient, walking us through the menu and pricing and taking the time to point out all available food options - Lunch special portions are on the smaller side; pricing differs from the advertised $10 on the menu, with certain items carrying an upcharge - Food was decent but served barely warm: Jerk Chicken ($1.50 upcharge) had a subtle kick, though I would've preferred more heat; the BBQ Chicken (leg and thigh) was coated in a mild sauce, but the meat underneath the skin was bland; sides were hit or miss--sweet plantains were moist and tender with a slight char, cabbage was nicely seasoned, mac and cheese was very basic, and the roasted potatoes were overly salty - Overall a decent spot for a quick bite with good service and some solid sides, but small portions, pricing clarity, and food temperature leave room for improvement

Ordered the fish dinner and red velvet cake to go. The fish was a bit salty however when you balance all three out it worked, but if you wanted to eat them separately, the fish seem to be a little too salty. The mac & cheese was very good and creamy. Overall, a good dish. That red velvet was OK nothing really stood out to make it any different from anything else overall a good experience I would like to come back to try another dish

    Beans and rice

I ordered for Father's Day. Looking forward to Beans and Rice... Less than 8 total beans in the order and it was refrigerator cold. Not good quality, to me, and I don't think anyone order BEans and rice and expect such few beans.

When I'm in the area, Paula's is the main option when I'm craving Soul Food. The food is relatively good. I grew up in the Newark area, so I've had better Soul Food in my time. I love getting the Wings Dinner but, I didn't enjoy that the wings were drenched in sauce, but the sides were delicious!! Nonetheless, Paula's remain as my go to Soul Food spot when in the Hackensack area. I might try something new next time.

If you're craving authentic, mouth-watering soul food with a warm, inviting atmosphere, look no further than Paula's Soulfood Café in Hackensack, NJ. Today's lunch was nothing short of delightful, and I'm excited to share my experience with you all! For the main event, I indulged in Jerked Chicken with Rasta Pasta and Sautéed Cabbage. The jerk chicken was bursting with flavor - perfectly seasoned, juicy, and tender. Paired with the creamy, spiced-up Rasta pasta and tender sautéed cabbage, it was a comforting, soul-satisfying meal. But that wasn't all! I also had their Fried Whiting with Chips. The fish was crispy on the outside, flaky and moist on the inside - a classic, done to perfection. And let's not forget about dessert! Paula's famous Banana Pudding is an absolute must-try. It's decadently creamy, with just the right amount of sweetness - you'll be thinking about it long after you've finished. The service at Paula's is just as remarkable as the food. The staff is incredibly friendly and genuinely cares about providing a great experience. You can feel the love and passion that goes into every dish. It's clear that this isn't just a café - it's a community hub where great food and positive vibes meet. Whether you choose to dine in or take out, you can't go wrong here. Located at 331 Main St, Hackensack, NJ, Paula's Soulfood Café is the perfect place to satisfy your hunger and enjoy some of the best soul food around. Paul's Soul Food is one of my favorite local spots in Hackensack. This time I got the brisket platter with mac & cheese and collard greens. The brisket was sweeter than I expected -- not the dry BBQ style -- but still delicious and incredibly tender. The sides were on point, and the cornbread is always a winner. On my first visit, I tried the fried shrimp and fried chicken platter, which was equally amazing. I try to stop by at least once a month to work my way through the menu. Great vibe, friendly service, and definitely a spot worth supporting!

Very spacious restaurant with lots of seatings. We were seated immediately on a Friday night. We all ordered the combo/mix-and-match and the portions were huge!! Loved the seaweed oyster soup and grilled mackerel. Others ordered the LA galbi which was probably one of the best we've had. So flavorful. Seafood pancake was also good. Prices were very reasonable. Staff were very friendly. Service was attentive and fast. Our Korean friend said their kimchi was one of the best she has had. No wonder the restaurant actually sells it in a jar. Only complaint is it's tiny parking in the front but street parking is also available. This restaurant definitely has become one of our favorites.

The broth was decent but not great; it leans more on the herbal side and isn't as spicy as other places. Oyster, Seaweed & Beef Soup (3/5): Packed with seaweed, but only came with about 5 oysters and very little beef. The broth had a strong, decent seafood flavor. Fried Spanish Squid (3/5): This wasn't on the menu, but I was excited they could make it since I'd seen photos from 7 months ago. However, it was baby squid rather than the body of the squid. It also felt a bit overcooked, lacking that fresh, chewy texture

I wish she had told us this sooner, as we had to place a new order for my in-laws while we were almost done with our own food. strange that they were out of snow crab legs and dungeness crab so early in the evening and with so few customers. also the restaurant is freezing cold, dingy, and dark, which adds to the over all unpleasant dining experience. definitely skip this place!

The space looked modern, with wonderful decors and interior. They also had shaded outdoor seating, hightop tables and a huge bar as well. We started the lunch with blackened Octopus with mango salad (appetizer special of the day), that was a really good dish. The clams casino was an interesting, baked top on a citrusy sauce. For entree, we ordered the Chilean Sea bass, that had a very well cooked filet, but the risotto didn't taste good to me. I got had the Branzino that had extra crispy grilled skin, but the fish itself survived from being dry. The kale was good and mash potato was decent. My daughter liked her penne pasta with butter and cheese. We wanted to get some mocktails, but they were out of virgin mojito, per the server. Not sure how was that possible!!! The disappointing part of the lunch was the mediocre service. Even though I mentioned it was a birthday celebration in the reservation, no one bothered to wish or ask us if we were celebrating anything. Our server only had to attend our table, yet he only came by three times, once to ask us about water, then to take our order, and once after our appetizers were served. Half of the time he invisible and rest of the time he was just hanging out by the register area stairs, chit chatting with other staff members. We refilled our own water and had to grab other stuff members to get extra plates and utensils. I was super annoyed to pay premium price only to experience a diner like service. I didn't even bother to order the Zeppole from the dessert menu. I paid the check and we walked out as quickly as we could.
