State Farm originally approached us about insuring our handyman business. Before the policy was written, we provided detailed financial information and a complete list of the services we perform. We were fully transparent about our operations, including the fact that we perform pressure washing. We relied on the agency to review this information and confirm that State Farm could properly insure our business. After going through underwriting, canceling our existing coverage, and spending considerable time transferring the policy, State Farm issued the policy and we began paying the required premium. Approximately five weeks later, the agency asked whether we performed pressure washing--even though it had been disclosed on the information we originally provided. We were then told State Farm could no longer insure us. As a result, we had to start the entire process over again: find another insurance company, provide all our business information again, complete another underwriting process, and spend hours shopping for replacement liability coverage. This could have been avoided if proper due diligence had been completed before the State Farm policy was issued. Approximately six months later, State Farm audited the short period in which we were insured. During the audit, we were told that all payroll had to be classified under a carpenter classification, including the owners and office employees who perform no carpentry or fieldwork. Because the audit happened to include one of our busiest payroll months, the final charge was approximately double our normal monthly premium. We disputed the classification and the additional charge, but our concerns were not resolved, and the bill was ultimately sent to collections. My greatest frustration is that we provided the agency with the information it requested and clearly disclosed the work our company performs. In my opinion, the agency did not adequately review that information before issuing the policy, leaving our business to deal with the time, expense, stress, and disruption that followed. Based on our experience, I would not recommend this agency for commercial liability insurance. Business owners should carefully confirm--in writing--that every service they provide is covered and that office and ownership payroll will be classified appropriately before accepting a policy.
