This eatery practically shares a parking lot with Long John Silvers on Oakland Park Boulevard just…read moreWest of I-95 and east of 441. It's easy to find and has lots of parking. The restaurant seats more than 50. It's sleek with lots of black and red (to match its name). Except for one other table, it was practically empty on a Wednesday evening. Our first waitress was friendly. She brought our beverages and took our orders. After that, we got a different young lady. She also was cordial. (But got a bit testy when I went to find her so we could pay the check and leave.) We got the smothered chicken, smothered pork, fried chicken, three beverages, and two desserts. Let's start with the desserts. The peach cobbler crust was a bit thick and the peaches tasted like they were from a can. The red velvet cake was mediocre. Definitely not specially made. Now the sides. The corn bread was perfect. The red velvet corn bread was a treat. The greens were good. The rice was soaked in gravy. The yams were way too sweet. The entrees were the standout. The chicken only comes in wings. Nevertheless, they were seasoned and fried well, had a light breading, and were meaty. The pork chops were moist and savory. The smothered dishes weren't really smothered and could have used some more gravy, which lacked onions. But that didn't stop us from thoroughly enjoying them. Dinner for 3 with 3 beverages, 3 entrees, 2 desserts, tax, and tip was about $110. We hope to return and try the catfish, the turkey, and the liver and onions. P.S. A small group came in while we were eating and one of the diners was vaping. Isn't that illegal in restaurants? I was hoping the management would stop him. But he was there for about the last 15-20 minutes of our meal and continued to vape a few feet away from us.

While we were sitting in the car, I searched for a Haitian restaurant and found La Bella Cafe. I called and placed an order, and the woman who answered the phone was very friendly and kind. I ordered the chicken and rice (no photos, unfortunately). The portion of rice alone could easily feed 3-4 people, and the chicken was plentiful as well. The only thing missing from the meal was pikliz. The next day, I wanted my husband to have something he would really enjoy, so I called again and ordered the red snapper. The day before, when I picked up my chicken and rice, the owner's husband happened to be carrying a large plate of the snapper dinner, and both my husband and I were impressed by the presentation and the amount of food. Since my chicken meal didn't contain pikliz, this time, I made sure to request pikliz--Haitian pickled cabbage, carrots, hot pepper, and other ingredients. The snapper dinner costs $40 (they offer both a $40 and a $50 fish dinner). The meal came with fried plantains, diri ak djon djon (black mushroom rice), sauce, pikliz, and of course, the star of the dish: the red snapper. The presentation was excellent. Everything was packaged neatly in an aluminum pan with all the fixings, and the rice came in a separate container. Now, the big question--how was the food? It did not disappoint. Eating that meal was the happiest my husband had been since we landed in Florida. By the time we visited La Bella Cafe, we had been traveling for about two weeks, and the food felt familiar and comforting to me as a Haitian who often cooks these dishes at home. The fish was well‑seasoned, and the rice was cooked perfectly. If I had to suggest anything, it would be to include one more container of pikliz. And for my husband, the plantains weren't crispy enough--he's used to mine! Overall, La Bella Cafe was the best place we ate during our month‑long trip.

As odd as it is to go during the day and have brunch, I would say it is the move. You pull into a plaza where everything else is closed except for this business and say hi to the security guard stationed at the entrance of the place---at 11 AM---to walk into a lounge beautifully decorated with green walls, floral accents and a disco ball. It is clear that the majority of patrons come much later in the day, like after 9 PM, to get bottle service listening to a DJ or any other performer. This would explain why the air conditioning was cranked so high, to accommodate the bodies and electricity that would pack the place much later. Our server didn't crack a smile but immediately brought us water after we asked and rounded back twice to take our order. Like I said, going during the day when there are only about 5 other parties dining seems to be the move for prompt service and food preparation. The dishes came out super hot and fresh. The Creole Seafood Omelette ($26) was chock full of well seasoned shrimp and lobster and cheese, with a creamy roux on the side that was good to occasionally dip a bite into but wasn't necessary all the time. The potatoes that came on the side were just the right amount of crispy while leaving some heartiness to them. The Fried Chicken and Waffles ($26) included flavorful fried chicken with breading that didn't quit when you tore it or cut into it. The cool part of this dish is the choice you have of the waffle it comes with. The Cookies and Cream Waffles should be your go-to. They were topped with the chocolate cookie sandwich crumbles and a great homemade vanilla icing. For a Lauderhill establishment in an area where you really don't know of anything else happening, this place is worth a venture out for your brunch. I'd go back to try the other items and drinks!
