I discovered a gem of an apparel store and it's called, Jos A. Bank, on Madison. As soon as I entered, I was approached by Josie.....one of the best Sales Representatives I've ever encountered. She was patient, helpful, and knowledgeable. After perusing the fist floor, Josie informed me that there is a "clearance" section on the second floor. Well, that second floor was a treasure trove of amazing clothing at ridiculous prices. I was able to purchase a beautiful sports jacket, originally $250.00, for $39.99! It's a big retail space on Madison Avenue - so it's going to be busy at times. The salespeople truly try their best to make it a personalized experience for each customer. My guy Greg was a friendly middle age black dude who knew what I wanted - and made reasonable recommendations without trying to upsell me stuff i didn't want. Retail experience across the board has nosedived in NYC in last ten years so it's refreshing to see people take pride in what is often an unfulfilling line of work. Greg and I covered a lot of conversational ground while shopping - covering football, family, and the ups and downs of life. They have a lot of nice inventory for a variety of occasions. It inspires one to take pride in your appearance and ditch the athleisure that we've been allowed to wear to the office since Covid. read more

I am writing this review to highlight two very different experiences of quality of service during a single visit today. 8/21 The gentlemen Greg who assisted with my measurements to rent a tux was exceptional. very polite and also spoke highly of the quality of the clothing as well as the store. The female who's role is the consultation manager was frankly rude to both Greg and myself, unwelcoming, and unprofessional. The suits themselves are fine, but my experience with the sales staff was very negative. As others have mentioned, the salespeople here are rude, pushy, and constantly try to upsell products even after you've clearly declined. In particular, the salesperson I dealt with was shorter and had a beard. When I went to make a return, the person I believe to be the store manager (they had to call him down to process the return) was visibly upset and extremely unprofessional, giving me unnecessary attitude throughout the entire process. The tailor, after shortening the length of the pants I bought there, left the pants one and a half inches too long. He did not use a chalk mark as an aid, I did not see him use any pins. I purchased a suit from this store. The FIRST time I wore them, they ripped right down the seam, not the end of the world. I called them the next day, they said to bring them in ASAP to be sewn back. I show up and am told they cannot accept my RIPPED suit pants because they need to be dry cleaned first. This was never communicated to me by the store rep on the phone and was a huge waste of my time. Also, when I went in they could not guarantee to fix the pants when I bring them back. One thought I had was: how did it ever come to this? Once upon a time, when I was in college, Banks was a good as Brooks Brothers, with a very american line of clothing that was, often, 'preppy.' It was good work-wear for a professional, attractive sportswear for the weekend, and excellent quality. None of this is true any longer. The store on Madison mirrors the mistakes Banks has made: once set up with a staid interior design that may not have been exciting; still, it looked like a place to be fit for suits and better quality clothing. It had a certain 'garment gravitas' commensurate with its service and quality that abided. Now it looks generic and difficult to distinguish from every other industrial interior designed establishment. It's cold, unappealing and uncomfortable looking. There's no sense of a men's haberdashery, either in service, spirit or quality. I feel bad for the salesmen. They try, but haven't much to work with. The clothing has all suffered. Even at their highest, most expensive levels of, say, a suit, you cannot get real quality: for example there is no real canvassing -it's so thin (certainly not made of horsehair, the old school way), that it doesn't really serve the purpose. Stitching is machine for everything. Shirts are stitched, for example, at about 12 to the inch. May as well buy at Kohls or Macy's. Even the boxer shorts -which once featured long-lasting, attractive striped oxford cloth or broadcloth, and with the covered elastics to last longer and feel better. A belt I purchased last year is thin leather with a plastic backing: I know better now. In any case, it's a store for the mass market of clothing that lasts a few years and then is discarded. Came here to look at suits. This review is purely about the shopping process. I did not buy one. The store is a bit dated. The folks that work there are very helpful though. A lady immediately helped us and she was rather knowledgable. She showed us the styles they had. Everything was marked full price but as soon as you started talking to them everything was on some kind of deal. Don't know why they didn't have signs with their deals or just mark items at their sale price. Strange strategy. Kind of misleading. Don't know why you would want to turn me off with a high price even if something was on special. Anyhow. The suit I was interested in they did not have in store. But I wanted to see one and they had a customer's one that was waiting to be picked up so they took it out and let me touch it. Don't know how I feel about that. They treated it very carefully and all but if I was a customer I don't know if I would want them to let people touch my suit I had ordered. The guy that helped me after the first lady knew his stuff. Both were very helpful and kind. Can't complain. But I will say their styles are just outdated. Its the kind of stuff my grandfather wore. An old Jewish man. Thats the best explanation. Their top tier suits are very nice but the lower tier ones are just too 70s for me. Strange lines, pocket flaps, elaborate inside trim. I had a custom ordered suit ordered 2/13/2022 over $600.00 on my birthday for a wedding on 5/14 which I'm officiating which my nieces had ordered from thePA/NY stores the wedding party's suits. After several times having to come in at my cost for errors made on measurements on custom shirt on custom vest was finally told suit ready on 4/30 upon pick up on 5/7 vest is not there, a few days short of 3 months & today I get an email of a credit for the vest 5days before the wedding. They ruined my birthday gift & wedding for me, I guess once the charge cleared it doesn't matter. I have been a long time customer of Jos A Bank, and until today, I've always had good experience with customer service. My fiancée and I came to this store to return a shirt I had purchased for our wedding. I was sized wrong when I purchased it (not a big deal, these things happen), but we were treated with a disrespect I have rarely encountered in a retail environment. An older woman, with long grey hair, approached us and immediately began speaking down to us and criticizing our request to exchange the shirt. She curtly told us it's against their "policy" to do so. We politely requested to speak to a manager and she refused. At this point we decided it was best to leave and address the situation by calling customer service. Very disappointing. read more

So, I don't want to complain, particularly because I got the suit for free. Well, it was in partnership with JoS A. Bank and the Gary Sinise Foundation. I got my voucher for a suit and when there to pick. I showed up, and was directed to a salesman who asked me a couple of questions about what I was looking for before he picked three suits out for me to choose from. He handed it to me and then I tried it on. I ended up deciding to get tailoring done here-the voucher only covered hemming. The tailor came, took my measurements and paid the fee up front. $51 dollars for a suit? No complaints there. I was told it would be ready the following week and I would get a call. One week turns into two almost into three before I decide to call them to check the status of my suit. I called and they couldn't find a record of me before it turns out that my name was misspelled. I would say mis-written but it was typed. How could they mistype my name when I spelled it out for them in-person? They also didn't get the correct phone number down-which explains the lack of phone call, again, how does that get bungled when I was there to give the information and then was repeated to reconfirm? Anyway, I show up the next weekend and try on the suit...and it looks like I was swimming around in my father's suit. The salesman who handled my free suit seemed as uninterested as he did the first time (probably because he was getting 0 commission off of me,) and so it took time to get his attention and then call the tailor down to remeasure me. So, with new and correct measurements in tow and my contact information corrected I waited again. No call, I just went in last weekend to pick it up and it was ready this time. On my third visit my suit was done and now I never have to deal with them again. Two stars for the fact that I paid under 100 dollars for a suit with tailoring but that's about it. read more

Came in here expected to get measured for a suit that's set up for a wedding that's coming up. Gave the guy the group number as was instructed and clearly he had no idea or had some misunderstanding on why I was there. All he ended up doing was measuring my chest and waist and instead of inputting the information into the system, he tells me to give the info to my friend who's the groom. He also asked me what my normal suit jacket size is...I told him I don't know since I typically get bespoke suits and not off the rack. He looked at me like I had 10 heads and was like "how do you go into a store and get a suit jacket without getting measured up"...in my head i'm saying this guy has no idea what I'm talking about. I walked out confused as I was supposed to be measured for a suit that's being purchased so I would have expected more than two measurements. Brought the issue up to my friend and the fidi location apparently will take care of me since midtown Jos A Bank can't seem to follow directions or provide adequate service. read more

I Rented a tuxedo from here for a wedding that I was the best man in. The Morning of, while the bridal party was getting dressed, I went to put on my bow tie and the clip was completely broken. We were forced to use a safety pin to hold it together which was both uncomfortable and an eye soar. You would think If you are spending good money to rent a product, the owner would at least give you a product that doesn't cause a problem on an important day of someone's life. Also, the white shirt looked like it hadn't been dry cleaned at all. Would not recommend using any products from here for weddings. read more

Came in at 10 am to purchase a blue & white or green & white striped tie for an event. The staff were super friendly, greeting me at the door then telling me if I needed any assistance I could just ask- not too pushy/hungry for your business like some stores are. I informed them of the tie I needed, and one of the associates (I believe his name was Antonio) brought me up to the Second floor, while informing me that this is the Flagship store- and the only Jos a Bank store to have 2 stories. He showed me a few selections for the blue/ white and green/ white. Nothing worked as an exact match for the green, but there were a few blue ones. (This was nothing surprising, as I have already been to 4 stores that didn't really have either option). While the event ended up going with another tie option, I still have nothing but good things to say about this Jos a Bank location. One of the key managers, Emil, displayed how gracefully adept he is in seamless multitasking in order to meet the needs of all the individuals who clamored for his assistance. Although I was returning items, I was treated with an incredible amount of respect and the attention to detail was exemplary. Further, this store was open on New Years Day when most persons are resting after their boisterous if not controversial celebrations. I truly wish I could give JoS A. Bank's a zero star rating. This was, by far, the worst experience we had during our entire year of wedding planning. My husband, my father and our nine groomsmen (scattered around the country) were all put into the JoS A. Bank system, fitted and paid-up for their tux rentals for our March 2nd, 2013 New York City wedding. Or so we thought. My husband was actually never put into the system. We luckily caught the mistake and had him re-fitted at the NYC location a few weeks before the wedding and we were assured everything was ready to go. We arrived the Thursday before our Saturday wedding and voila - no tux. No entry into the system. The tux he did receive, didn't fit correctly. He was the Groom - this in itself would have been enough to warrant a one-star review. Except, there's more. Our friend Sam didn't have shoes, when he returned to pick them up a second time - they didn't fit, which means he had to go back a third time. Our friend JJ was never put into the system, even though he was the first to get fitted and luckily I triple checked after the groom debacle to make sure everything else was happened on time and caught the mistake. Myself. My father's tux smelled like the worst BO you can imagine. Luckily The W Hotel was able to have it over-night dry cleaned for him. Oh, and it didn't fit. It was too small. This may sound a bit flippant and catty, but I would NEVER recommend this store, EVER to ANYONE. read more

I would have given this place a 0 if I could. I had been thinking on and off of getting another sportcoat, and I stepped in seeing their "buy one get two free sign." First off, there was a mediocre selection of jackets in there. And secondly, as others have mentioned, the staff stank to high heaven. The middle aged lady that helped me was somewhere in between genuinely helpful and intrusive saleswoman, but that is okay. I liked *one* jacket, the "get two free" was obviously reflected in the inflated price of that jacket, but I thought, what the heck and picked two more. They left me standing around waiting for long periods when I had asked for pants in a different size. When I went to see what she was up to I found her standing around chatting with coworkers. You get what you pay for. This stands true for this chain. They bait you in with 3 suits for the price of one sale. Sounds good.......or does it? I bought into it and went for their top of the line $1k Joseph suit x's 3 due to the sale. Well let me tell you all seemed well for many years in fact I loved my JAB's suits so I went in again. Happy. Well fast forward 4 years later and 3 of the 6 have ripped in the place where the sun don't shine, destroyed. Their response was, " I was too hard on them"? Hmm well I'm not in construction and I'm not a wrestler. The moral of this sad story is that if you wear suits often don't expect them to hold up, the price is there but the quality is not and that will become abundantly clear in time. Sad. read more

Here's how they make it sound awesome (buy 1 get two free). The $900 suit is really a $300 suit. Meaning, if you go in, and say "I only want 1 suit," you can have that $900 suit... for $300. Same with shirts and ties ($79.50 tie and two free because it's really a $26 tie. So, everything on sale that reads buy one get two free is not really the case. It's marketing, but the clothes are very good quality. read more

Sometimes you need a shirt that fits you. Sometimes you lean into specialists, like the army of well dressed yet lightly weary gentlemen at Jos. A. Bank. Clarissa, my fabulous daughter is giving a speech at the UN. I had to attend and she called me while I passed this store. I decided to just quickly get a shirt. How do you get a shirt that fits. You measure the neck. Well in this case the neck measurement brought me a shirt that did not fit. Guess where?! Around the neck!! Clarissa was out with some model friends to launch a new Russian vodka brand. When she called me slightly intoxicated she told me to bring that damn shirt back. She yelled it in danish. I love how multilingual she is. So second attempt at Jos. A. Bank. I ended up with the slowest person on the sales floor. The man was utterly charming though. Yet he never measured my neck. We just tried on every damn shirt there was! Until it fit. So, I shopped in many countries, cities and centuries. But I would expect a bit more from a store that caters this exact need by providing an ample workforce that by pure number you could lead into a battle like in last weeks episode of Game of Thrones. Yet they seem to lack that specific skill. Maybe they are better in the morning. read more

The day before a job interview, a quick scan of my boyfriend's closet revealed exactly zero possibilities. So I dragged him in to JoS A. Bank since I was sure they would have something that would work. My boyfriend hates shopping more than anything else in the world, but the staff was helpful and considerate. They quickly helped him find something in his budget that was flattering. I knew it would be impossible to get alterations done by the next morning, but the staff was actually willing to do them that night! We walked out only a few hours later with freshly hemmed pants and a jacket with shortened sleeves. I can't say enough good things. Kareen was amazingly patient as boyfriend resisted and eventually gave in to my suggestions. Staff is hit or miss nice, Gordon served on me last time I was there and he was wonderful; sometimes you can walk through and not be approached (which can be a good thing to if you don't like the help). The merchandise is of decent quality but not high-end. It is a good place to fill out your closet if you are entering the business world, not get a high-end high fashion suit. They have sales often, so I would recommend waiting for one of those to pull the trigger on something there. read more

I was at work today and noticed a stain on my pants. I have a very, very important appointment after work. A quick check online revealed Joseph A Banks was having a clearance sale and I popped over. The salesperson at the door asked me what I needed and when I told him my story (and price range) he didn't shoo me out or ignore me. Instead, he helped me find the perfect pair of pants for my needs at even less than I was planning to spend. He even went down to the basement to check for something. That's real customer service. Had hope for this place because I heard otherwise about Mens Wearhouse. Our first visit Eveyln was super helpful and friendly. 1. She told us that we'd get the tuxs in 10 days. That didn't happen. 2. Then when some did arrive, one of them had the wrong neck wear. 3. They called one of the men in our party saying is tux was for pickup. However they never called the other person who ordered the same tux on the same day. When that person called, employee on the phone said "oh yeah sorry. Yours is here too." 4. One of the shoes for the groomsman was broken 5. Each groomsman ordered the same bow tie (which was on the receipts.) When they received regular ties I was completely astonished. Eveyln had the audacity to blame the bride! She said, "maybe your future wife ordered wrong." IT WAS ON THE RECEIPTS FOR EACH TUX ORDERED MONTHS EARLIER!!!! I HOPE the staff here reads this. My husband has bought lots of clothes at Joseph A. Bank over the years, starting when we lived in Rochester (where the sales people at the Clinton Avenue store were always pleasant). One time we also bought a few pieces of luggage at the Scarsdale store, and the manager - who was pleasant - sold them to us. We've been to this (Madison Avenue) store several times and the sales people were always fine, including three days ago when we were driving by and noticed they were having a big sale. While I stayed in the car for 40 minutes nearly dying of heat prostration (just a slight exaggeration), my husband bought some nice pants & belts and a piece of carry-on luggage for great prices. However, he neglected to look at the receipt before leaving the store. That night I looked at the receipt and said "I thought you'd told me the luggage was on sale for $119". Well, yes; it was - but they'd mistakenly charged him the non-sale price ($200). The salesman had been nice, so that wasn't the issue. I called the store yesterday and requested the manager. After quite awhile, a woman who turned out to be the assistant manager (but she neglected to tell me that) got on the phone. From word one, she was *nasty and condescending*; it was a really acrimonious conversation, to say the least. She treated me like a *criminal* and initially said we had to bring the luggage back to the store (sorry, but that wasn't going to happen in *this* lifetime!). Then she insisted the luggage was *not* on sale (!), at which point I informed her that my husband knows how to read numbers - and further, I told her he wouldn't have *bought* the luggage if it wasn't on sale. She said she'd call me back (apparently that was a power trip to show who's boss), and finally she called to say she'd refund the difference "as a courtesy" (I'd told her we've spent a lot of money at JAB over the years, which is no exaggeration) - but she *still* insisted the luggage had not been on sale. Afterwards, I was *livid* (an understatement) - so today I called JAB's corporate office and asked for the company president. I got ahold of his assistant (a very pleasant woman) and she said I'd have to speak with the head of customer service, so she left a voicemail message. Apparently that person was unavailable - so when the phone rang awhile later, it was the regional manager and he's a SUPER-nice guy. Seriously, he has a wonderful personality - and I'd sure love to be "a fly on the wall" when he talks to the assistant manager.... I'm giving four stars because - and this is in contrast to most of the other reviews for that store - we'd always had pleasant service from the sales staff until yesterday's situation, plus I received a superb resolution from the regional manager (btw, he told me they've just opened a beautiful new store at 111 Broadway). read more

Here's a follow up on my review posted 10/25/2016. Sean called to say my custom suit was in, so I picked it up today and the final product met my *high* expectations. Mr. Garitano, the tailor who fit my last suit--7 or 8 years ago--came over to do an inspection and make some adjustments. He wanted to finish off the cuffs and do some minor tailoring in the seat, which he did while I waited. It was cool to see the finished product, assembled from all the decisions we made last time. It gave me that feeling you can only get from a high-quality article of clothing: confidence. Very glad to have had this experience with the company and look forward to wearing my new navy suit for years to come. read more

This place is a joke. The most disappointing suit-buying experience of my life, and this time was to be a groomsman. I worked on this 2 months ahead of time and with all the BS they put me through, I barely had my suit on time for the wedding, meaning the day before! I agree with others' comments that the salesmen were pushy and annoying, dishonest. I was also followed around the store and stared at as if I was going to steal a tie. On my first fitting the salesman says "Oh it looks great! Take it." It was like parachute pants not fitting in almost any dimension and they guy was trying to just get me to leave with it. (When I told the manager about that later, he states that he observed that interaction from afar. In that case, why the hell didn't he step in and rectify at that moment??!!) I had the alterations done and returned to pick it up. Tried it on in the store assuming the impolite taylor would not have done it right, and of course he only brought in ONE of the 4 alterations that were measured ($60). So I left it again and asked that kindly he perform ALL of the alterations originally discussed. Then I returned to pick it up (4th trip to the store just to buy a suit), and this time magically it fit pretty well, looked nice. I wore the suit to the wedding, cared for it like a brand new expensive suit. I notice now after 1 use THAT THE SEAM IN REAR OF THE JACKET IS OPENING COMPLETELY WIDE OPEN IN THE MIDDLE, THE STITCHING IS COMING UNDONE IN BOTH DIRECTIONS. I showed it to another taylor and he says this is obviously because it was not done right, the seam was stitched but not hand or machine tied knots with the stitches to ensure it would not unravel. I would NEVER GO HERE AGAIN except to make them fix their error on this jacket and tell the manager how shitty my experience has been. To summarize: I paid hundreds of dollars for a suit, paid $60 for alterations which had to be redone once already and STILL ARE NOT DONE RIGHT, and I am returning FOR A 5th TRIP TO THE STORE FOR THEM TO FIX THEIR SLOPPY WORK. I stopped off in search of a Summer weight sports jacket. They had some in my size but not in the color I was looking for. I was assisted by Omar - who was extremely helpful and brought out several jackets from the storeroom when I did not see anything on the racks.
