Looking for something outside of the typical Hawaii touristy activities? Jose Dynamite & Friends' comedy may be the perfect way to spend an evening! Located in O'Toole's Pub on Nu'uanu in downtown/Chinatown, there are tons of great options for dinner before the show, and places to drink afterwards. I must admit, since moving here I've experienced quite a few comedy shows, namely improv, and I wasn't impressed. Everything about Jose Dynamite was on the other side of the coin. My date Kristine C. and I both enjoyed laughing together! The strength of this show is the varied "& Friends" that change from week to week. As I've only been once, I only got to experience one group. I know I'll be going back to see more! I liked the different skill levels and backgrounds of the performers; they all had something to say and different ways of expressing their comedic views on the world. I loved the differences between the locals and transplants; they all see Hawai'i in such a funny way. I like how Jose himself gives different aspiring comedians a forum to practice with a live audience. The length of the show was also perfect; well worth the money, but not too long that we were ready to go before it ended. The host kept it flowing between comedians too, with his own brand of jokes. Jose Dynamite was hilarious. He had an air of professionalism and was naturally funny. I liked how he tried to learn the audience's names and where people were coming from. He, and the other comedians, were very approachable and friendly after the show. They were all clearly having a fun time. The room itself was very nice, located at the back of O'Toole's pub. They have bar service as the comedy show progresses, or you can bring your own drinks over from the bar. Unlike the main bar area, this room is non-smoking, so no need to worry about that if you aren't a fan. The air conditioning was comfortable. Restrooms are right outside the entrance door. It's an intimate setting, everyone gets up close with the comedians, which makes personal interaction part of the fun. Even watching the rest of the audience was entertaining: the quiet nervous people, the happy people, and the inevitable heckler. Take advantage of the Yelp deal if you're thinking of coming with a larger group. Also, use the free dessert coupon at Restaurant Epic up the street after the show. Street parking is free after 6:30pm, but it's a better and safer bet to use one of the public Chinatown garages that cost $3 flat for the evening. For tourists, it's also easy to get here by bus or cab. If you're a fan of the Irish pubs in town, use the free Shamrock shuttle from two locations in Waikiki to get here safely while you drink. This is a hidden gem for a Friday night in Honolulu. This is a great place to come if you're looking for a laugh, you're new to comedy shows or you want support local talent. Most of the comedy centers around political issues, controversial topics, adult humor, local culture in Hawaii, and some dark humor. If you are from Hawaii you will understand and appreciate 100% of the jokes if you are not from Hawaii well than you will still understand 95-99% of the humor. If you live in Honolulu you should definitely come here at least once, if you're on vacation staying nearby and need plans for Friday night you should check it out! The show lasted about one hour and forty-five minutes. There were in total five comedians including Jose and a comedic MC. On this night the main comedian was Brian aka Hilo Jesus and he was great! There was laughs from the beginning to the end for all the comedians and Jose is a nice guy whose definitely funny! The show said it would start at 7:30 but started more around 7:45 so you don't need to be there early but don't come too late. If you are there by 7:30 you will have a good seat selection but there is not a bad seat in the whole theater. There was about 25 people attending the show I went to which is a decent turnout as the rooms maximum occupancy must be under 50 persons! There is a server who will come around often throughout the show where you can order drinks. Helpful tips to get here:#1 There is a parking lot right next door on the same side of the street. #2 When you enter the bar keep to your left and keep walking all the through the door in the back that says restrooms and you'll be there. My fiances birthday is this month and I wanted to take her to do something different. She is a thrill seeker. She has done a lot so each year makes it harder for me!! Well...thank god for Jose dynamite and the crew!!!! She has never been to a comedy show and we love comedy!!! So I called and reserved 2 seats. Spoke to Jose himself and he was nice on the phone. We get to nuuanu around 5:45 pm. We parked in the park and pay right next to o'tooles. It was $12 bucks that expired 7am the next day. Which to me was not bad cause there is other places that are $20 and up. Anyhow's... We parked, walked into o'tooles and its straight towards the back. So since we were early we strolled down other bars till doors opened. They open doors at 630 and show starts at 730. They serve drinks but no pupu or food. You can bring in food, be careful what you bring tho, you are at a comedy show. Lol its a very intimate sitting area. You are up and personal. We loved it tho. We had the time of our lives last night. The comedians were hilarious. The whole show I snorted!! My fiancé had a blast and was so happy that I brought her here. So I topped last years birthday!! Cool point for me!! It is a must see!! Its only $10 a head to get in, but call to reserve. Its every Fridays and I believe they always have a different line up to. Jose's Dynamite and Friends is in Chinatown. I got invited to see it. It was a stand-up comedy/comedian live show. You have to be over 21 to watch this comedy show. I went with two females, one was the comedian for that night. If you want to laugh and hang out on a Friday this the place to go to. This at Otoole's Irish Pub Bar. You can park on the street after 6:30 pm or park at the Chinatown Municipal Building, $3.00 after 5p.m., you have to retrieve your vehicle before midnight and pre-pay, otherwise you will not be able to get your vehicle the next day. The stand -up comedy, they have 3- 5 comedians for the night. They talked all kinds of subjects, dirty jokes and clean jokes. The room is not too big. We got seated in the front. They have two shows one started at 7:30 p.m and another show at 9:30p.m. First show finished promptly at 9:15. They served alcoholic drinks and none alcoholic. After the show, you can watch live band at the Otoole's Pub. We did not stay for that. Jose, the comedian, was the last one. He made us laugh. Audiences participated with his Q&A. You will have to come out and listen to these comedians. Fee is $10 mine was free every Friday nite. I recommend it. It is sort of like an Open Mike comedy show. They sing also. One guy says it took him 25 years to write the song when he sung the song it only had 5-6 words and that was end the of the song, I thought that was funny and i like this one the most. I've been to two of these shows at O'toole. Seems like the 7:30 show is more popular. There are usually four comedian, that vary in skill level. It's usually a good time. Sometime the crowd can get borderline heckling... especially as the night goes and it's gets busy at O'tooles. My one big complaint about the back room is that people smoke in the patio area so every time the door is opened into the room, you get a new cloud of smoke coming in. Will be back again. I've always wanted to go to an open mic night! As many of you already know, I moved here from Los Angeles where I stopped in at the Laugh Factory to watch Dane Cook's new set among other upcoming comics. However, they were already all established with a working set of jokes prepared. Open mic leads to such a different experience as these comics connnect to you on a more personal level, learning your mannerisms and tailoring their routine to it. You must enter Otoole's to get to the show room. The room is on the other side of the outdoor restroom. The cover charge is $10. I love that they had a waitress making rounds during the show. It's good to know that the bar is doing more than just lending them the room. The show is intimate, but still had plenty of seats that need your booty in them! This is probably the closest place you will find true comedy in Honolulu. Put this on your list if standup comedy is a favorite nighttime pastime for you. read more

I was lucky enough to be invited to this show but normally the cost is $10 a person which is not bad considering there are a lot of comics to see. The show is every Friday night except for first Fridays . The venue is in the back of o'tooles which is a bit small so try to get there by 7 to get a good seat as the show starts at 730. They have a waitress that collects drink orders through out the show so there's never a shortage of drinks. Make sure you get a bite to eat before the show as there is no food served. I've been to this comedy show numerous times, thanks in large part to the man of the hour, Jose Dynamite. He first introduced me to Hawaii comedy a couple of years ago and I was instantly hooked. Friday nights, the comedy game is at O'Toole's Irish Pub off Nuuanu. The bar in and of itself is a neat place - Irish music abound, a large saltwater tank next to the bar, and my personal favorite...the location for many TV shows and movie scenes. The only part I don't like is, like the other Irish pubs, smoking is allowed. I loathe cigarette smoke. But onto the event itself. It's located in the back of the pub, by the restrooms (one-stallers). If you get the hookup early enough, you can get reserved tables right up front where all the action is. But be careful! As anyone who attends a comedy show knows, that makes you fair game for the comedian's attention!! (aka butt of their jokes). I've yet to attend a show where a comedian was in any way mean or rude. They're all great people! Some funnier than others, but what better way to support local artists. The price is great, you have a server that brings you drinks, and the host himself is an awesome guy! Bottom line, if you haven't been to a show, you definitely need to check it out! PARKING: really convenient lot next to O'Toole's that's pretty decent. Overall I definitely give Jose Dynamite & Friends a 4 star. The venue is in the Celtic Room in the back of O'Tooles. It's very small and cozy. There were about 24 chairs for the audience. There were tables and chairs for the comedians and the staff I believe. You are able to order drinks and you can have pretzels for snacks. There was a host/emcee that was quite humorous. He didn't seem prepared but maybe that was part of his skit. I'm not sure but he was funny. I can't remember how many comedians there were total but some of them were very funny and one of them was okay. Jose was pretty comedic as well. My friend and I laughed a lot and really had a fun time. Our cheeks were hurting by the end of the night. I would recommend everyone going at least once. It was fun! read more

Went on the 3rd friday of the month and had a great night. Parking on the street happened to be free so that was a plus, however there is a public paid parking pass the bar if you don't want to walk more than 100 yards or look for street parking. We got there early and figured we would have a drink or 2. When walking into the bar it was a bit smokey, I thought smoking in bars was not allowed but this bar allows it. They also sell cigars. Bartenders are friendly and got us our drinks right away. When it got closer to the time of the show we walked into the back and checked in, we were greated by 2 comedians (I'd advise checking in early and putting a coaster on your seat, if not your left with whatever seat is opened) The comedians all hang out in the back and are very social, the one even sat with us and talked story. The show was suppose to start at 730, they didn't start until 8ish. They have a waitress walking around taking orders which is nice so you can enjoy the show. In this room you can't smoke but right outside the door you can. The comedians came on and they were all very good. The first few rushed through their jokes but they were funny. Overall it was a great time, prices were good (get tickets on living social) drink prices were average, the room is in the back of the bar...it is on the smaller side) after leaving the show there was a band so that was a plus as well!! This show is very entertaining! Most of the comics that do the show are really funny, and its great for a date, or with a bunch of friends. Although there are a couple of up and coming comics, several are more established in their material. And Jose has a knack for getting great mainland talent who come through Hawaii throughout the year. My favorite thing about this show is that many of the comics are clean throughout, or skip most of their dirty material for other venues, so the audience can enjoy and laugh without getting their toes stepped on. An excellent night out. Since the comedians vary, I will save you a review of them. The mc was Outstanding and got the crowd warmed up. The lineup was longer than expected, 5 acts! All great comedians with good quality routines. The layout of the club was small and intimate. A few row of chairs at the front of the stage serve as targets, so watch out. Went last night and of the 6 comics only two (one of which was the host) were at all polished and ready for a performance. I fully support local, amateur comedians and expected some rough edges but the quality was much worse than that. I would go back only to support the effort but couldn't recommend this to others. The show was also entirely too long and the headliner went on way to long in a rambling fashion.
