It's been a few years now since I was a patient at Spring, and I want to share my terrible experience at this clinic in hopes that it will be helpful to other people in my situation who are seeking compassionate and competent treatment. My spouse and I sought out Spring specifically because they like to position their clinics as experts in LGBTQ+ family planning, and claim to have expertise treating transgender and nonbinary people. My spouse is a nonbinary person on hormone replacement therapy, and it was extremely important to us to find a clinic and a doctor with some experience treating trans people. We were referred to Dr. Dovey as the clinic's "LGBTQ expert," and I went into my first consult with her having high hopes for a good experience. During that consult, Dr. Dovey misgendered my spouse every single time she referred to them. To give her credit where credit is due, she would correct herself, and then misgender them again two sentences later, correct herself, and so on and so forth. At the point at which someone misgenders you ten times in a row, you really start to wonder if they are even trying to get it right, especially when the person in question is supposed to be the organization's "LGBTQ expert." Dr. Dovey also proposed a lot of unnecessary measures with regards to my spouse, like stopping their hormone treatments to collect even more genetic materials from them (when they had already cryopreserved more than the recommended amount of reproductive materials prior to the beginning of their transition). Ultimately, it felt like Dr. Dovey didn't actually care about trans people, understanding trans experiences in medical settings, or my spouse's individual experience at the clinic. My spouse had a range of experiences with other staff at the clinic, from being gendered correctly to other people misgendering them. Not a particularly great sign from a place that is supposed to be "good" about trans issues! Even so, we might have tried to stick with Spring, but they also messed up pretty badly in another area. Like many people who wind up in fertility clinics, I have some chronic health conditions. Most of them are not genetic and are not genetically transmissible. However, I do have one very rare genetic mutation that results in lower bone density than the average person my age. IF my spouse were to be a carrier for the same very rare genetic mutation, it MIGHT cause a child of ours to experience a similar condition. I want to be clear that in my day-to-day life, this condition does not really affect me negatively and I have no reason to think about it unless I'm discussing my medical history. While we were in the initial steps of our process at Spring, Dr. Dovey and her staff repeatedly communicated to me that they would essentially require my spouse to have a very particular genetic test done (one so specific that my spouse's PCP could not order it and would have had to refer them to a genetic specialist to do so) to ensure that any potential embryos we created would not have this condition. The clinic refused to move forward with our process until my spouse got the testing done, and it really came across as "we don't want your potential child to turn out like YOU." Which, to be honest, felt insulting, gross, policing, and completely unnecessary. It really didn't feel like the clinic's business or call whether we chose to get the genetic testing done or not, but Spring absolutely made it their call. This is what really killed any chances of our working with Spring, and we just quietly dropped out of the process. Spring comes across as a clinic that cares a lot about its numbers and success rates, and a place that doesn't have a problem throwing up roadblocks for people whose health conditions might possibly impact how good their numbers look. For chronically ill and disabled people, this kind of vibe essentially sends the message "we don't care about you and we don't really want to treat you." At least, that's the way I felt after my experience at Spring. People and organizations can change, and I hope that in the years since I attempted to be a patient there, Dr. Dovey and Spring have improved. In fact, I know people who have had positive experiences with Dr. Dovey and Spring! However, based on my personal experience of this clinic, I can't recommend her as a practitioner or the clinic as a safe space for trans people or chronically ill and disabled people. If you belong to one of those groups, do your research, interview clinics and ask about their training and experience with these patient populations, and go from there -- but don't go to Spring. read more

I know that fertility is not an easy task for many families that are having issues. I tried with my ex-wife with UCSF, and another clinic in the South Bay many years before without success. When I got remarried my wife wanted to have children and I knew first hand about the trials of going through fertility woes, but was hopeful that we would have success. My wife found Spring Fertility online and we had an online consultation since it was during the beginning of Covid back in Summer of 2020. When it came time to having the procedure the team seemed to be far better than previous clinics I had gone to in the past. I was very hopeful, but as a person having gone through it before nothing is for certain and you can really only hope for the best. We were assigned to Dr. Fischer who was in the San Francisco office at the time, as they didn't even have the amount of offices they have today. And as they are celebrating 8 years of practice, we must have been with them during their 4th year of operations. The process was fantastic and I really appreciated the team with their assistance along the way. We were assigned with Mel who was always available and super helpful with any questions we had when the Doctor was busy. We had a first round of IVF and unfortunately after genetic testing we didn't have any viable embryos. But my wife was determined and we did a second round of IVF and were lucky to have two viable embryos a boy and a girl. We decided to have them randomize the choice and thankfully the embryo implanted well to which 9 months later we ended up with a boy! Today he is almost 3 years old and about a year later we went for the second implantation. Would you know, our second was also a success and was born on the same day as the first one. So now we are about to celebrate her first birthday on the same day as our sons. We really thank the team at Spring Fertility who were top notch and were super supportive even when we moved out of the country and had to come back for the second procedure. When I went to Spring in May, I met with one of their doctors and decided not to move forward after a few things happened. 1. She looked at her phone a few times and asked me routine questions. I accept that doctors are people too and may have emergencies but nothing was mentioned. 2. Then when I had my AFC done I was given a number that was low for my age. I was pretty surprised given my AMH levels but I had watched the count being done and I'm not the expert. I had decided it was worth investing in the right clinic so I did not cancel another appt I had made at a different clinic in SF a few weeks later and I'm very glad I did not. My experience was night and day. The other doc had reviewed my intake form more carefully and answered specific questions for me about my condition. She immediately said we should we redo the AFC because it wasn't possible for my AMH to be a certain number and the count to be another. Shockingly, my count was 3x higher when we redid it and this doc actually asked me if it had been another doctor (yes it was ) who had did my count at Spring. Spring I think is a very efficient place, clean, the nurses were really nice and prepared. BUT I think the change in doctor staffing has made a difference. My friends who used Spring a few years ago described a very different experience than I had. Spring made things right for me after I gave them the same feedback I'm sharing here but I know this is a big decision and I wanted to share that don't feel like you need to commit to the first clinic you try and don't be afraid to seek a second opinion if something feels off. read more

As a Black woman, seeking excellent healthcare has always been stressful. We are treated differently, and I've always had to fight to get proper health care. At first, I was so nervous about this procedure because I hate needles, and I didn't know if I would be treated like a human being. I've wanted to freeze my eggs for a while because I haven't found my life partner yet. So, I wanted to make sure that I had options for my future. She's a GEM, and it's so rare to find a Black fertility doctor. I was and still am ECSTATIC that she was my doctor! She took such great care of me, and I was informed every step of the way of who, what, where, and why of everything I needed to know. Dr. Okeigwe even helped me heal a trigger. I had an abortion when I was 20 years old, and unfortunately, the doctor and nurses treated me like an animal and pinned me down while they did the procedure. So from there on, every time I went to an OBGYN and put my legs up, I would go into shock from that experience. I never thought that trigger was going to be healed. But, because Dr. Okeigwe listened to my story, answered all my questions, and equipped me with all of my options, the trigger began to go away. It got to the point where I would come in for a check-up, and we would laugh, and before I knew it, I was already lying down, looking up at all of my eggs progressing. For $500 I got some lab test results, promotional calls, promotional emails, and no guidance to start my egg freezing process. Well, I did find an ovarian cyst and I removed it quickly so I could start egg freezing but they ignored my email after the surgery. I emailed them again a week ago. When they called me a full week later, they told me that they were not responding because of an app that they use now. Okay, there is such a thing as an autoreply so that your customers know you are not reading the email. I have never seen such terrible management. Egg freezing is time sensitive and I need the clinic I go to to be on it. I will not be going with them for freezing eggs. read more

I'm finally getting around to writing a review about my egg freezing experience with Spring Fertility. I received an alarming message August 1, 2023 (a month after I was to take this medication) from Alto Pharmacy calling into question the "potency" of the Leuprolide trigger shot I received through the bundle from Spring. According to Alto, there was a "mishap" and the medication I received was "faulty." This message came weeks after I was to take the critical shot, which presumably would have had a huge impact on my outcomes. I received no communication from the Spring clinic explaining the "mishap", its consequences or any mention of what I should do. This is obviously unacceptable. Instead, all I have received is an offer from the pharmacy to replace the shot "at no cost to me." Gee, thanks. This isn't exactly a procedure you do many times if you can avoid it. This wasn't the first time the clinic demonstrated a lack of professionalism and acted with questionable competence. In June I abruptly stopped my last cycle with Spring because it was apparent a few days into the cycle that something had gone awry with how I was progressing. I received no useful answers about what might be happening - my doctor did not call to follow up on the very strange progression results. All I received was a call from the nurse telling me my next dose...which you can imagine was super odd given I was questioning whether it was the right thing for me at all. At the time, I questioned whether the medication was correct and OK, but heard nothing (this is before I actually found out some of the medication I received was faulty). I was told at 2PM that my doctor doesn't just call patients without an appointment and she's already left the office. Because I hadn't heard from the doctor, I had to continue taking the medication longer than I should have so I didn't mess anything up. I did stop, after continuing to take medication it turns out I did not need, because it was obvious the care I received was negligent and my best interests were not being served. I know it meant a sunk cost, but I wasn't willing to put my health in their hands anymore. I only received a response once I escalated my case to numerous avenues across Spring. In short, there are multiple ways to approach egg freezing from a timing and dosage standpoint. The method the clinic chose for me was not working, but I was told it was "my decision" to keep going or or to try another method. Given the complexity of the process you're undergoing, you expect the experts to use their expert knowledge to help you make the best decision for your body. This did not happen. I followed my gut and stopped the medication, knowing something was wrong. As a result, I did not continue and never took the trigger shot that I soon found out was faulty. If I had, this would make an already unacceptable scenario even more problematic and potentially harmful. At this point I am very much concerned that the medication I received and administered to myself was also faulty given subsequent events and experience. I have sent numerous communications to Spring and have heard nothing. The medication foul-up and the total lack of communication from the Spring medical team was the last straw. I still haven't received any communication on the faulty medication and I have to believe I'm not the only one who experienced this issue. Spring Fertility is funded by private equity. It's not a healthcare business. It's an egg freezing factory and it doesn't provide the highly personalized support that you are sold. Highly recommend going elsewhere. read more

I came to Sping when I was 4 years into my infertility journey at another big hospital clinic where I went through multiple IUIs and IVF cycles. I was at the point of desperation and despair but wanted to give it one more shot. Every single thing was better at Spring, from the very first email outreach to schedule my appointment, to the lovely and peaceful Oakland office, and the super clear pricing. Everyone I interacted with here was just so human and easy to communicate with and get fast responses from. This was really mind blowing after experiencing so much stress and frustration dealing with simple admin stuff at my last clinic. I think Dr. Minjarez is the best!! I got to see her for every monitoring appointment except when I had to come to the sf office on weekends. She knows all about the latest techniques and data from the newest studies so she adjusted my protocol and did some things differently than my last RE. I really felt that everything was personalized to my situation and it wasn't just copy/paste for each patient. She is also kind and understanding and on top of everything. My egg retrieval and transfers were done in SF as Oakland is just for monitoring and consults, and the only downside was that there isn't any privacy in pre-op there making it kind of uncomfortable. I wanted to believe they care based on all these reviews but truly all they care about is the money. How do you increase your IUI by 50% and not let someone know til the day before their initiation? With no changes to what happens? My first two IUI cycles were $1700 and they just increased to $2600! I'm self-pay so I must be fine with an increase of $900? It is unethical to increase a price when someone comes to you and trusts you to do this ultra sensitive thing, you're told three times, and switch that big of gears on you without more forewarning. Dr. Minjarez and the entire Spring team were such a blessing to our family. We now have a beautiful daughter and Spring made the entire process as comfortable and easy as possible. They were the 3rd clinic we went to and I can say with confidence that Spring offers an unparalleled level of care. The 1st clinic we went to was part of a big research hospital where I felt like just another uterus on the assembly line. The 2nd clinic was small, but the staff was careless and didn't seem to empathize with what we were going through. After my MC they didn't even bother to follow up with me. Then, we found Spring. My primary care doc recommended Spring bc they have a highly successful embryology lab, and according to her, that's what really makes a difference. So we made an appointment. Dr. Minjarez is such a talented person. She is incredibly sharp, very well organized, communicates clearly and is also so genuinely warm and caring. I always felt like we were in the drivers seat and she was there to help us navigate the road ahead of us with ease. From the moment we walked in it was clear that the care they provide is on a whole other level. The offices make you feel like you are walking into a spa. When you're pumped full of hormones, you really appreciate the calm atmosphere and genuinely patient, warm and caring staff. They have clearly done their work to provide a seamless service. Examples include: monitors placed to help you and your partner see what the docs see without having to crane your neck; special calm rooms for the many blood draws with aquarium videos or real water fountains to help relax you as you get poked for the 10th time that month; relaxing waiting rooms with water, snacks, books and plants; kind competent staff that walk you through everything; special little boxes to save your ultrasound USB as a keepsake. I spent over $85000 at Spring Fertility and got nothing ! Who knew that they were backed by a growth equity investment firm known as Wildcat Capital Management, and I was merely a number as part of a fast growing revenue hungry IVF clinic.!!! There was no customization of my treatment plan at all and it was just one cycle after another and keep paying . There was no care towards my babies and my feelings and my next generation . Out of desperation, I ended up seeing a different IVF doctor and got 3 healthy embryos on the first attempt without having to use growth hormone. I was recommended to Spring Fertility by my acupuncturist and I cannot say enough good things. My doctor was Dr. Fisher, and in a sentence, he's a gem of a physician. Unlike other reproductive endocrinologists, or doctors in general, that I have treated with, Dr. Fisher treats you like an individual, not one of many patients going through a protocol. From our first meeting, he listened to my history and tailored the care accordingly. Throughout the egg retrieval process, he held my hand and kept me super informed. Most importantly, he truly cared about how I was doing. Trying to get pregnant is a very vulnerable time and Dr. Fisher understands this. He went above and beyond in making sure all of my questions were answered and being there for me, even once calling me while he was on vacation. As for the treatment itself, the results were amazing. I currently have several embryos frozen for the future. The team at Spring isn't afraid to try different protocols (the only suggested protocol previously for me was the antagonist protocol). I didn't even realize there were other options. I am now seeing midwives for my pregnancy and I miss Spring so much! Which is a weird thing to say about a fertility clinic ha. I've been to multiple fertility clinics in the Bay Area and Spring Fertility is top notch. First, everyone is SO nice. You are treated like a VIP in every single interaction - from the front desk staff, to the medical assistants drawing your blood, nurses calling with results, and most importantly, the doctors. This is absolutely not the case at other clinics, especially RSC (please, if you don't want to feel like a number instead of a person, save yourself a lot of time and annoyance and do NOT go to RSC!). Second, the doctors actually LISTEN to you. I've been working with Dr. Dovey (who I could not recommend more) and I feel like we have a true partnership - she respects that I know my body and is willing to listen when I have an idea or a concern. I never feel rushed by Dr. Dovey although I know she is probably running a million miles a minute. Third, and most importantly, Spring isn't one of those clinics who only cares about their success rates - they are willing to work with you and try creative strategies to achieve success. Update: I now have a beautiful 2 month old baby and will absolutely come back for my second! I cannot give higher praise to the entire Spring Fertility staff!! Oakland is my primary location, and I LOVE my team. I have undergone three IUIs and IVF (I am on my second transfer), and the level of care has been of the highest quality the entire time. Dr. Minjarez, Flo, and Marina are indescribably amazing. The process of fertility treatment is so difficult and every time I go in or speak with anyone on my team, I feel better. And that's just it-- they're your team! Flo and Marina are the just best to work with -- they have been such great cheerleaders, support providers, and beacons of knowledge along the way. Dr. M is fantastic -- her expertise and positivity has kept me grounded and educated about the process. Everyone is so responsive -- each time I call or email, I hear right back, and I am always put at ease. If had my druthers, I'd rather not have to be undergoing fertility treatment (who would?). My wife and I decided to go to Spring Fertility in Oakland after many unsuccessful IUIs. We initially started our IVF journey at a large hospital in San Ramon and Fremont but we quickly realized that we'd never get anyone on the phone, the pricing was confusing, and they were going to make my body adhere to the doctor's schedule as opposed to allowing my body to do its thing and they could work around me. We found Dr. Minjarez through Fertility IQ and realized she is one of the best fertility doctors in the US. The office is really cozy and you get to know the staff by first name quickly. As a Queer couple we felt as though we had found a home clinic with Spring. Dr. Minjarez and team treated us as dear patients and they were completely invested in our journey from day one. I recommend Spring to anyone that is searching for the best care with compassion. This review is long overdue, but I am finally getting around to it. I came to Dr. Minjarez fresh off a failed retrieval at a clinic in the Sacramento area (where we live). From our very first meeting with Dr. Minjarez, I was so impressed with her, and I knew we were in the right spot. She created a plan that was specific to us and our needs, and I knew she cared about us and that we weren't just a statistic for her and Spring. I saw Dr. Minjarez for every single ultrasound (save for a few on the weekends in San Francisco), and she also did every one of my procedures, which was so comforting to see her friendly and smiling face at every visit. It took us a while, we did 3 banking retrievals and 2 transfers, but I'm due to give birth any day now to our first child and we have frozen embryos leftover! Coming to Spring was one of the best decisions we've ever made, and it was worth every single 5 hour round trip to see her! And I would be remiss if I didn't mention her amazing staff!! Every single nurse and staff member we encountered was amazing. We spent a lot of time at the Oakland office, and everyone there was so nice and accommodating and always quick to answer my endless emails and questions. We were patients at Spring for about nine months before becoming fed up and leaving for another provider. We were assigned to Dr. Dovey. She was initially helpful and informative but, once we were in the system, became unreliable and unresponsive. We repeatedly changed our plans to attend virtual meetings with her only to have her not show up and the office staff not pick up. We were required to communicate through an app, which in and of itself was not a problem, however it served as a barrier to accessing actual medical support, instead shunting us from one admin to another, each of which was sickeningly sweet but largely unhelpful, a very frustrating combination. Perhaps most significantly, we required genetic testing to move forward with our case but due to an internal administrative issue our case was not initiated for several months, with no apology. Additionally, we were told that we would need to wait for genetic testing probes to be built before we could proceed with egg retrieval, only to learn from our new provider that this is not the case, as a biopsy of the embryo can be taken at the time of retrieval/fertilization and frozen for later testing. On medical questions, Dr. Dovey did not seem to be able to make decisions herself and repeatedly told us that she would need to to discuss with her colleagues - perhaps she was not as experienced as we thought - which caused further delays. Ultimately, these administrative mistakes, incorrect advice, ineffective care, and the time it took to find a new provider have caused us to lose approximately one year - a year we don't have - to say nothing of the time lost and stress caused. read more

My wife was referred to Spring from a doctor friend and it couldn't have been better for us. From the first consultation, Dr. Minjarez and the entire staff was incredible. She walked us through the whole process of IUI, which we were perusing. She answered all our questions and made us feel comfortable. We highly recommend Spring fertility. We worked with Dr Minjarez primarily-- who sadly has since moved out of the area--but interacted with many of the other Oakland and SF doctors during our several rounds of IVF and did not have a single bad experience. Everything was very thoroughly and patiently explained, we got prompt answers to our questions, the facilities were VERY nice, clean and comfortable, and all the staff and providers were outstanding. We also felt very supported by the outstanding financial counselor, Katrese Baker, who we have interacted with several times and who very much helped us sort through the complicated nature of payment/coverage for IVF. Spring also included several nice touches/surprises along the way (I won't divulge those here for people who are going through the process) that made us feel cared for and brought joy to a sometimes stressful process. This whole team is amazing! We started this process at UCSF and left because we didn't like the care (or lack of care) we were getting there. We're so glad we came to spring. Why? 1. They are friendly, kind, and genuine 2. You get a person when you call and that person is helpful and always an easy interaction 3. They call you back when they say they will 4. The billing is upfront honest fair and simple 5. The nursing staff and doctors are available if you need them at any time and over the weekend without having to call and press a million numbers 6. I highly recommended spring fertility. The entire care team is so kind, responsive and supportive. I froze my eggs with Dr. Fisher which was a very intense process for me both physically and emotionally. He was great to work with and was compassionate in addition to being a good doctor. The timeline and number of steps was really daunting at first, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. They gave me a timeline and ensured that I was informed and had my questions answered at each step of the way. It felt like it was over before I realized. I honestly cannot recommend Dr. Minjarez and the entire team at Spring Fertility enough. They are amazing and they are the BEST!! We came here after 2.5 years of trying naturally, two miscarriages, one year of fertility treatments (including three failed IUI's elsewhere) and not a great looking prognosis (very low AMH, close to 40 years old, not many eggs left!). Dr. M advised us to do mini-stimulation IVF due to my age and circumstances. We ended up doing four rounds of mini-stim retrievals. The first three rounds didn't produce as many viable embryos as we had hoped, so we decided to give it one more try. During the last round Dr. M mixed things up with my drugs/treatment and her expert recommendations produced four more viable PGS tested embryos (including my daughter's)! In the end we had five PGS tested embryos to choose from. We transferred one last December, it stuck, and I just gave birth to the most beautiful, healthy baby girl two weeks ago!! It still feels so surreal. It was not an easy road by any means, but by trusting the care of our team at Spring and relying on them to help us navigate such a crazy journey we finally have our beautiful baby. I will never be able to summarize the phenomal care I received from Dr Minjarez during my time doing fertility treatment. I started off doing treatment at UCSF and then at Spring in SF but was not getting anywhere. Just when I was about to throw in the towel after numerous failed IUI's and IVF cycles, someone referred me to Dr Minjarez. While I live in San Francisco, the commute over the Bay Bridge was so worth it to see her in Oakland. Dr Minjarez is by far the absolute kindest, intelligent, warm, approachable doctor I have ever seen in my entire life. She is 100% focused on getting results and SHE DID! She tried new things that others weren't trying, she listened to me, fully understood my body and what we needed to do to get the results we were after. We got pregnant after years of trying and the hug I received from her after our first ultrasound was so special. Without a doubt, I recommend anyone living near or far to see Dr Minjarez.
