So I'm in town visiting from California and my crown falls off. My dentist back home is relatively young and a little less experienced if I'm honest, which is relevant context if you consider my crown was placed only 6 months ago. And so I was drawn to Dr. Towbin who appeared to have many years of experience. Thankfully he was able to see me the morning after the crown came off. As I suspected he's extremely experienced. I had a toothache this morning and called around in the neighborhood and a nice receptionist answered the phone. She said they could squeeze me in if I could come in the next 15 minutes. So I powered through the cold and found the little 3 room office. Dr. Towbin has been in this office since 1969 (see photos for his mugshot), that's some time! He's a very straightforward guy and helped determine that my issue was with my sinuses not my teeth. I'm not a regular patient but I thought his staff was solid and he was knowledgable and generally interested in his patients. Seems like a solid pick for a dentist. read more

I honestly cannot rave about Dr. Towbin and his entire office more. Dr. Towbin is the first Dentist that I have seen in almost 16 years, thanks to large amounts of childhood trauma. I can finally say - I have had a positive experience. He saw me with an emergency, same day and his entire staff were so kind and caring. They are a small, single doctor office and the difference is clear with the time they take with you. When the office manager saw me teary eyed, she came in and hugged me in the chair! Dr. Towbin stayed with me through the whole procedure, explaining everything and giving me all the options available, while recommending what he thought would be best and why. I had never felt so well informed and understood in a dental chair before. I have lots of work to do, but will return to Dr. Towbin for it all. Highly, HIGHLY recommend. read more

Not only does he have an incredible staff and fabulous office location but Dr. Towbin is warm, extremely thorough and provides constructive criticism on how to care for your teeth. My "check up" included a thorough analysis with Dr. Towbin talking me through his process the entire time, asking me questions about my brushing habits and ensuring I understood the techniques he was passing on to make my teeth stay clean and healthy. I am a recent college grad, poor, and living in NYC. I was searching for a dentist because my teeth haven't been checked in 10 years or so...thanks mom. I asked friends, made phone calls to dentists on Yelp. But I was skeptical of all of them. More importantly, I do not have dental insurance. I called up my good buddy from Elementary school whose father is a child dentist. And he recommended me to Dr. Towbin. I learned that Dr. Townbin excepts Vital Savings offered by Atena - That takes 50% off of the prices on anything. AMAZING! So a 2 surface cavity can run you $200, but with Dr. Towbin and vital savings, it is $90. CRAZY! Besides the price, Dr. Townbin is one of those old-fashioned doctors. There is no computer screen in your face, no B.S spa treatment, just amazing skill and comfort. I've had 4 cavities filled so far, one a possible root canal, but Dr. Towbin did his best to insure that it won't be a root canal. As soon as you meet him, you'll know what I mean. I have my two final appointments with him next week, and I look forward to it. read more

I am an NYU student and far from home. I called and told the receptionist about my oral pain and she told me to come in as soon as I can. She was amazing! She explained everything to me wonderfully. The dental assistant and the Dr. Towbin were both amazing. I felt really comfortable with both. Unfortunately Dr. Towbin does not do oral surgery which is what I needed. I called many other dentist office looking for a surgeon and I never got in contact with a group that cared so much. read more

Dr Towbin is amazing. He is an 'old-fashioned' dentist in the best sense. He takes his time, explains everything as he proceeds, is incredibly thorough, and has a subtle sense of humor. His basic exam includes things I've never even known were to be checked for -- for example, he measures how much I'm able to open my jaws, and compares it to his findings of the last exam. He checks the inside of one's mouth to look for any warning signs of cancer, and even palpates the lymph nodes in the neck. The very first time I went there, he requested that I demonstrate my flossing technique, in case there was room for improvement, and even had me try different kinds of floss to make sure I was using the right one! His touch is very gentle. On my last visit all I needed was to have an old filling replaced. Knowing that I'm persnickety about taking medications, the doctor offered the option of trying it without novicaine, which to me is a dream come true. I was told the signal for him to stop would be merely to raise my hand. I won't say I felt nothing during the drilling, but the teensy bit of sensation was well worth not having the side effects of novicaine -- that aftermath of numbness. To me this is one of the signs of a highly skilled and talented dentist -- to confidently do such delicate work. I felt completely in control, and was almost fully relaxed the entire time. And hugging the huge soft teddy bear was very comforting. (I'm told that it's only adults who take advantage of this bear; children seldom want it!) This same sweetness and expertise extends to his staff. The person at the front desk, Judy (who is also a dental assistant) has a warm and caring manner, and a genuine (and beautiful) smile. She is extremely helpful and understanding, too. All of the superlatives mentioned so far apply to Esther, the dental hygienist. In addition to her excellent work, she advises me on how I can better do my own home-care. I've learned to carry out her intelligent suggestions. Patricia, the dental assistant, works seamlessly in tune with the doctor, and one can feel the mutual respect that exists. Am I able to say anything more about this practice? Yes! Going to the dentist is a very pleasant experience for me -- I find myself smiling as I exit the lobby of the building into the pretty tree-lined street. read more

Nice people, and really great dentist. I hate going to the dentist and had a perfectly good experience here. I agree with all the other points made by other Yelpers about a thorough exam, which I appreciate. My only problem is communication around the cost of the appointment. I was told a cleaning is $155 without Vital Savings (I had just missed the deadline to enroll with my school for $30), which it is. However, that doesn't include x-rays (fair enough, I was expecting that to be more) or the part of the visit with Dr. Towbin which was ALSO $155. Yes, the visit was very thorough, but I walked out with a $450 bill for a regular checkup with no teeth problems other than some sensitivity. If I had had any idea that part was going to be charged separately, I would have declined it. I definitely don't recall being asked if I wanted to have my teeth checked or ever getting an indication that it would be extra (I was asked if I was okay with the x-rays). Apparently I'm just supposed to know this and assume that every element is going to be charged separately. But then - why was I told $155 on the phone, especially since I said that I didn't have Vital Savings yet and was deciding whether to buy it? That doesn't make sense to me. So - I'm not sure what to say because I really like Dr. Towbin, and Esther, the hygienist who cleaned my teeth. But I didn't get Vital Savings from the regular website because it wasn't going to save me enough on $155 to be worth it - but it would definitely have been worth it on $450. A little more transparency on cost would be really great. read more

I've been going to Dr Towbin for almost 15 years! My appointments are always on time, thorough and, well, as fun as going to the dentist can be. I HATE going to the dentist, but Dr Towbin is very gentle and takes time to explain procedures and follow-ups as needed. The staff is top-notch and super friendly, which makes the expensive cost a little less painful. Every time I leave the office, I tell them they're my favorite people I hate seeing!
