This barber shop is one of last remaining of its kind in Milwaukee. It is family owned and operated and a BayvIew staple. I don't even have hair anymore and I still go here from time to time for a beard trim just for some therapy or as they call it "hairapy". The diverse group of warm welcoming employees and customers always equals great conversation. You are even encouraged to bring your own beer in to share or donate to the beer fund and grab a brew from the mini fridge. I had my hair / beard cut here for my wedding and couldn't have been happier. My best man scheduled a private hair cut party for all of the groomsmen and myself!! Prices have gone up slightly, but they are still reasonable when comparing to these other "new school" barber shops around town. All I can say is fabulous. My son had a complete head fuck from a lady at great clips. Kid cried wore a hat for a month straight. The guys here made up for it 10 fold. He's gone 2 times now and got cuts from 2 different guys. Both times my kid has never been happier with his cuts. Disclaimer, I was not here for a haircut. So you may be wondering what I did during my visit to Jose's if I wasn't there for a haircut. I was at the barber for Cold Pizza Comedy. Yep, a comedy show. Such a unique experience, byob and they had pizza which if you waited until the end of show to grab a pizza, was cold. The show featured two comics from Chicago, one from Milwaukee, was hosted by Milwaukee's Ramie Makhlouf. They all had their own approach to comedy, and all very funny. Suggested donation was $5. When Supercuts (27th and Howard) makes you cry, you find a pro, and we're so thankful we did! We love Pedro at Jose's! Look at the difference in the pictures to see with your own eyes the difference PRIDE in your work and CARE for your customer makes! These haircuts were 15 minutes apart! The inspiration picture we showed was the same to each stylist. Supercuts said "we can't" and did the minimum (and did it poorly while insulting my daughter's hair). I've been here probably 4 or 5 times and got decent cuts but after yesterday, I'll never be back. I asked for a clean up with no length taken off because I have a job interview tomorrow. They took the clippers to the back and sides pretty hardcore, cutting off the length that I had (which I was willing to overlook) but they also COMPLETELY shaved off my f-ing sideburns. I don't know what would posses a barber to shave off side burns but I was absolutely mortified and got the hell out of there when my cut was done. An absolutely amazing Barbershop. I've gone here twice now after being referred by a friend who use to go see Jose for haircuts when Jose had a location somewhere else and my friend was 5 years old who is now 23. Yep you read that right Jose has been doing this a long time and he knows what he's doing. I can now see why my buddy hasn't gone anywhere else ever since he's had haircuts with Jose. Jose doesn't do many haircuts anymore these days but everyone else staffed does a great job. As soon as you walk in you're greeted by Jose if he's in and they ask if you have an appointment. They do walk-ins but if you want a specific barber I'd highly recommend scheduling an appointment because these guys do get busy. The normal haircut for men includes a beard trim, a straight razor shave for the back of your neck and an amazing hot towel experience after your cut. All of this being $23.00. The barber I went to and have been going to both times is Tim. My buddy does the same now since Jose doesn't do haircuts as much anymore. Both times Tim has done a phenomenal job with the fades or custom cuts I've wanted from a picture I showed him and he hit it spot on. I'm not from Milwaukee so I was in the market for a new Barbershop. I'm use to 5 dollar haircuts from a local place I went to back in Illinois so this is a bit more of cost then I'm used to but it's definitely worth it. I haven't had any experience with any of the other Barbers but I see their work and it always looks damn good. Oh and they offer you beer when you're there! 21+ of course. Service was good and I only had to wait about 10 minutes past appointment time to get cut, which I didn't see as a problem, they had a nice waiting area. They don't show you how your hair looks while they cut it, as they make you face the opposite way wall. I don't mind that but I maybe would've preferred to see the process so I can maybe make some input as the barber went. The fade was good and it's worth the money compared to other rather cheaper places that would mess up your hair. You pay and get a good quality fade. I would go there again. read more

I can't believe it's been almost 3 years since I first reviewed Jose's! Time is just flying by! They are in a larger building close to (if not just next door) to their original Bay View location. There is still art. There are still band flyers. Guitar cases were not in sight but I'm sure they are still there once in a while. The music yesterday was big band jazz standards. I was a walk-in like I always am and I was very happy with the cut that Frank provided. These people are pros and the conversation is always entertaining. I recently traveled from the east side, down to bay view to try this barber shop. With all the positive reviews, I thought it was worth the trip to try it. After getting a cut from Mark Ford, I won't be going anywhere else. Mark recently moved from Austin, and I am happy he brought his skills to the Midwest. The cut was worth the drive alone, but the hot towel made it amazing. Location is easy to find and parking is never a problem I hate getting a cut and it looks like you just got a hair cut. Went here for the 2nd time ever to get a shave a couple days before my wedding. My wife got me a gift certificate for a shave the first time I went here and I was very pleased with the experience I knew I would go back for a shave for my wedding. I called the day before to make an appointment, but I know they get plenty of walk-ins. The place isn't anything fancy, but more like your favorite bar where everyone seems like a regular and the setting is comfortable. The shave turned out perfect as it had the previous time and I had no worries about the barber slashing my throat since I've made amends with the "don". The music in here always seems good and the barber knows what he's doing, but will ask if you want anything left alone (burns, goatee, mustache, etc.). I think they charge either $13 or $15 which is a good rate and much cheaper than other places. A good shave takes time so don't be impatient and just relax. read more

This was a great experience all around; finally found my barbershop in Milwaukee.All the reviews are accurate...no appointment needed, but may be helpful unless you enjoy the banter and a short wait. I was there at 4PM and 5 chairs were going with good tunes in the background. The chairs had and eclectic cast of barbers who learned under Jose and were chatting with their patrons. They still don't quite trust him with the straight blade, but that's why NICK is there. For real: A great experience for an affordable price of $23 including everything. As a woman with short hair I cannot tell you how irritating it is being asked to pay $40-$50+ to get my hair cut at a salon. So I decided to check out Jose's Barbershop, and they were more than happy to make me feel at home. They have a growing pool of female clients, and it's easy to see why. $23 gets you a shampooing and fantastic cut, plus a hot towel treatment that leaves my skin feeling soft as butter. While it lacks all of the "girlie" hair products that salons are constantly trying to sell you, I just love the laid back vibe of the place. He was sure to let me know that he understands there are three people we need to please with this cut - myself, my wife (happy wife, happy life - right?) and himself, because if I wasn't satisfied, he wouldn't be pleased. He had a few deep thoughts that got my brain going tonight, overall a good time. It almost felt like a philosophical discussion was about to break out a few times even. Antonio took his time, checking in a few times to make sure I was happy with the way things were coming along. After the last time, I had said I wanted to be sure not to go too short. So he was sure to keep that in mind. When it wasn't quite the right length, I asked him to go shorter - and it ended up just right! I have been to Jose's twice now for a haircut. The first time around I was pretty well satisfied with the results. The second time was a complete and total disaster. I have been growing my hair out for sometime and provided specific instructions regarding how I would like it cut. The barber took creative liberty and left me with a new haircut that is nothing short of a joke. This was pointed out to me a half a dozen times within the same day. "Dude, what is up with your hair?" I am now considering if I should simply take the shears to my head and start fresh. Like mentioned, my first round went well. I would have given it a 4.5 or 5. The second time ranks as my worst haircut in my 30 years of life. Will I be back again, probably. But I know one specific barber that will not be touching my hair again. read more

I've seen Chris for a few cuts now and feel I finally got what (oddly) turned out to be a difficult request from other places: a modern Ivy League with a tight fade and razor part. Showed the man a picture once, and he remembers--every cut, for the most part, has been consistent. I recommend padding in some extra time to your schedule when making an appointment with Chris/Jose's so you can actually relax, chat with interesting folks, have a beer, and get away from whatever crap bag day you've had. He nodded and said okay, and proceeded to cut my hair just about the same way he cut the customer before me. Not a fan of that, or my cut. I read the reviews on yelp, went in for a haircut yesterday (8/11/11), and had a fantastic experience. Chris was my barber, and did a wonderful job cutting my hair. The haircut took a little longer than I anticipated, but mostly because there was just a lot going on in the shop. I can't relate how many times I've gone in for a haircut, and had my hair has looked terrible after it was done. This was possibly the first time in my life where I looked in the mirror after my haircut and was truly happy with how it looked. Also, the warm towel they give you after the cut is fantastic. Chris rubbed this really good smelling lemon rub into my forehead and face, gave me a temple massage, and then put the how towel on my face. It was incredibly relaxing. They also give you a straight edge on your sideburns and the back of your neck (like any good barber shop). It was just a fantastic overall experience: A good cut, good conversation, and some awesome extras. I felt very taken care of.
