Great stress relief for the moms in our group! Love that we can bring our own snacks and beverages (and no corkage fees). There are many paintings on the wall so you can see what others have created. Dora was our instructor and she was great. She took her time showing us how to create our masterpieces! I loved how she reminded us to take a drink to help us relax and not stress over our work! Fun time meeting new people and at the end seeing how different everyone's artwork turned out! Some even took liberties and invented new animals....spotted hyena-giraffe (Sandra!)! Haha Parking is the only issue but if you arrive early you shouldn't have to spend too much time looking. Try parking in the neighborhoods behind the studio. Some parked in the Vons parking lot but I advise against it as there are signs you will be towed. Thanks for a great time Dora!! We all had a blast and we will be back!!

The not-so-new-anymore San Diego Central Library is surprising the general public with great events…read moreand classes. I am specially interested in art classes, even more when those are offered for free and you can take them on a Saturday, at the very beautiful facility, with tons of natural light and seeing people walking by while you learn something new. If the teacher is also an ex-engineer-turned paper cutting artist makes the experience even more interesting. I have known Bhavna for years (we used to work at the same company, different teams) and had no idea that she was into arts (not that you usually expect that from an engineer:) and was actually living from her art. Years later, I had the opportunity to get re-acquainted her and got invited to her magical studio at her house. She does paintings, drawings and anything artistic, but has specialized in paper cutting, activity that she masters and that brings childhood memories to me (as I used to do it in elementary school arts and crafts class). So when I saw she was going to teach a mandala stencil creation class, I did not hesitate to sign in. She is going to be teaching more similar type of classes and the SDPL puts all the info in their Facebook page so, at least for me, that is the easiest way to get the info about schedules. Try it out and reconnect with some gratifying manual activity.

He started with Pastels, he's now onto watercolors and he's excited to go to oils. The reserving of classes is easy. The staff helps you out if you have questions. Shout out to Jelisa!!! (I hope I spelled that correctly). She's been so cool with my kids. The prices are fairly priced. The prices of the supplies are actually better than Amazon. Trust me I've looked. This place is not just for kids. I took some classes here too but unfortunately due to my schedule I had to stop. What's really great is that my son is really learning how create art from the basic foundations. For example, I didn't have extensive art classes, I was pretty much self taught so the way I do things is my way. So my kid sees me do something and says to me, "why don't you try this" and proceeds to show me something he was taught there. Immediately I'm like, "Dang, that would have made it easier." My point is, he's being taught and he's getting it! His artwork has definitely improved and he's super proud of his artwork and that's what's this is about. The classes are about 1-hour long and if you're a parent who likes to wait outside I highly recommend Oceano's on the corner. Get some food and a drink and it'll be your own weekly date. I am not into art. I don't like drawing, painting, pottery, you name it, I'm over it…read more But my friends were having a paint party so I said I'd come and drink with them, having no intention to paint. I got there and everything was set up. Joyce was nice and everyone settled in. She asked if I wanted to join and I laughed. Nope! My friends were like 'just try it' so, begrudgingly, I did. I was anxious because I just knew it was going to be so ugly if I did it, but Joyce said it was designed for kids even as young as seven and if she could help then make something beautiful, she could help me. You guys. I had so much fun. Joyce painted along with us and walked around giving instructions. I was pretty needy because I wanted my painting to be something I wanted to keep and she was very patient with me. It was way more fun than I expected it to be and I LOVED my painting so decided to book my own party. This is a super fun, inexpensive, group activity. Check it out!

We signed up our teenager for the Production and Performance course. What a delightful surprise! Rather than handing my son a script to memorize, Courtney challenged him to take inspiration from strangers and create his own world for the stage. In one eight-week class, my son learned interviewing skills, developed a character from scratch and wrote a short screenplay. He learned how to use voiceovers and visuals in performance and how to act in solo scenes, as well as collaborate with the group. And the production itself was a pleasure for audience and actors alike. What I liked best was how Courtney respected each child as an individual and offered challenging, fun, achievable goals in a nurturing, low-anxiety environment. She's also extremely well organized and pretty unflappable. After a system failure just hours before the show, she cleverly improvised by running the entire production's tech through a smart phone. No one knew the difference! We came back for the large-cast production of "The Jungle Book" this spring. Courtney adapted the novel to suit the cast that auditioned, ensuring every child had his or her time in the spotlight. She designed elegant costumes, choreographed Bollywood-style dance scenes and commissioned original music. She even organized the kids to do a flash mob of "dancing elephants" at Liberty Station! Nearly 40 actors from age 5 to 18 pulled together as a family and put on a spectacular show. Parents pitched in at every level, and were awed by the quality of the sold-out performances. This is one talented pro and one gem of a school!
