I went for a first-time visit with Dr. Rickerby because of his high reviews online, but had a mixed experience. I'll sum it up in 5 things that stood out the most: 1. The office is very clean and large. The reception was prompt and there was no long wait. 2. The receptionists upsold me a cancer screening and fluoride as a "bundle for first-time visitors" with the option to pay upfront. This was before I was even examined by the Dentist to determine if I needed either. I suspect that they may be incentivized to do this. 3. Most of my appointment was spent with the hygienist, who was very thorough with cleaning and X-rays. They wanted to take a ton of photos of my face, which I had to decline - most were unnecessary if the dentist was going to check anyway. 4. Of the hour I spent there Dr. Rickerby only saw me for about 5 minutes. He immediately offered Invisalign and a few other services that weren't covered by my insurance. 5. Dr. Rickerby focused more on steps to straighten my teeth than their condition. I originally wanted to know if I had cavities and ended up leaving without an answer. Overall, the cleaning was great, but I feel this office is more concerned about upselling additional cosmetic options than about covering the urgent necessities for dental health. I also believe a dentist should explain what needs to be done to alleviate the issues the patient cares about the most - they didn't. Any optional recommendations should have been secondary to that I've never been to a dental office that went straight for sales pitches and upselling on services that aren't covered by insurance once I walked into the door. Because of this, I am not confident that Rickerby is a dentist I can trust. So, I'll be looking elsewhere to hopefully a place that is more concerned about my health first. read more

I had an appointment with dr. rickerby today 8/26/2025. I was ushered into to the chair, and one of the ladies set me up by putting the dental bib around my neck and took an xray. Dr. rickerby came in and told me what i needed done and i said okay lets do it. The red flag was when Dr. Rickerby asked me when was the las time I was at the dentist I told him the last time I saw him, and then he said, "is that the last time you saw your Gynecologist? I gave a very uncomfortable laugh. After waiting for a while another lady came in and explained the total. it was $757.00 dollars and told me i had to sign the total document which i did. Another wait time now two ladies come back and ask me to pay the total right now. i said pay now i've never heard of paying before be serviced. Soi get out of the chair return to the reception area to pay my bill before being serviced. The two ladies one with child at the reception desk informs me my total due is now $100.00 dollars more than the original total of $757.00. Then I was asked, "how are you going to pay"? i said, half cash, half card, but why is the total different from the document you had me sign? Thetwo ladies looked at each other for the answer both confused, then they looked at me. then as if a light bulb turned on, one of the ladies said the hundred dollar difference was the actual visit fee. I said okay i will pay the new price just give me a receipt. what seemed like an eternity i said whats going on with my receipt? Now i'm told to have a seat back in the reception area. after another lengthy wait, i said whats going on here i'm feeling uncomfortable, where is me receipt? To add insult to injury i was told to pay the bill and i would get a receipt later because she could not figure out how to give me a receipt. I said to both ladies, you got me out of the chair in the middle of my doctors visit to pay up front which i agreed to do but i can not have a receipt given to me paid in full? Even if they would have informed me they wanted payment before service it would have been a little more professional than the way they handled me. I walked out. read more

Absolutely no regard for your dental health. Only cares about upselling you procedures. Sometimes he won't even do the procedure and will send you to another dental office but will still charge you. "Dr." Rickerby is committing fraud. read more

Never pay anything upfront, I paid my treatments (root canal & crown) since they were rushing me to pay for it just to find out the day I was supposed to get the root canal that they didn't had the propers tools and needed to refer me... i never got it done because it was to much back and forth so I ended up asking for my money back and til this day I'm still waiting... they scammed me! read more

He always has some excuse for why something can't be done but will still happily charge you. He doesn't care if you're dealing with insurance issues, he just wants his. His mouth is Wreckless and he's always sneaking in inappropriate comments that should see his tacky gold teeth smashed out. Claims to be constantly booked but has never had more than 2 people in his waiting room at once. Always claiming some other doc that is only in on select days would be the solution but oh no they aren't in today of course. It's one thing to recommend a dentist in real time for the work recently done on your teeth. It's quite another to acknowledge a dentist for the integrity of work he's done 25 years ago. Such was my experience when I returned to Dr. Haig Rickerby at one Journal Square in Jersey City New Jersey. I returned to his practice after eight years in another state when my gold crown that he had put in 25 years ago had loosened and fallen out. I drove an hour and a half for the visit. Despite movement of the tooth dr Rickerby applied his skill and tenacity toward a successful refit of the crown. His staff work efficiently and cohesively creating an all around peaceful, pleasant atmosphere. Way to go dr Rickerby. Still practicing great dentistry after all these years. read more

At the first visit, Dr. Rickerby took a great deal of time to inspect the whole mouth. He noticed signs of periodontal disease. His explanation was very specific and understandable. The hygienist is probably the best I've ever experienced. Just finished my second visit; the work was as close to painless dentistry as I can imagine. Not many really enjoy the dentist but I aways have the best experience at this office. I recently could not find any free time and had a hard time scheduling an appointment for over 4 months, but the office was very persistent as well as respectfully accommodating. As soon as they found a time that worked for me, they were quick to reach out and let me know so I can be added to their very tight schedule. It's an inviting atmosphere where you have professionals that take their time in making sure you're okay. I always feel like my best interest is at hand. Every visit feels very personal/specific to me, regardless if it's the dentist or the assisting professionals. They all do a good job of making sure I get everything I need. I recently discovered Yelp after I decided to leave a review for my new dentist. My new dentist has done a great job so far. However, I use to go to Dr. Rickerby a while back. Generally, he did good work. I discovered him through calling the 800 number to find a dentist. I chose Dr. Rickerby because he accepted a credit plan and was a part of the 800 number's registry. I had teeth cleanings, fillings, root canals, a crown and more done. I wasn't really satisfied with the crown, but I found it to be acceptable. At the top part of my crown, there's a black spot. I think it's glue from installing the crown. I asked him if it should show like that, he said it's fine. Sometimes it's like that. I said okay. Funny though because I know people with crowns on their back teeth too and I see no glue residue. To his credit, I've had no other issues with it and its been a few yesrs. Anyway, before my second root canal was done, it was determined that I needed a few more fillings. When I came in the next time to get another filling done, Dr. Rickerby wanted to start my second root canal (a specialist comes in to complete root canals). I told him no, don't do that. I can't afford a root canal at this time. By this time, I was using care credit. I didn't have enough credit to get a root canal. I told Dr. Rickerby to do the other filling, not the root canal. So, he preceded to work in my mouth. When he was done, he said I started the root canal. I said nooooooo, why would you do that, I can't afford it. He said, he's looking out for the best interest of my tooth. That's great, but if the patient says not to do that, he shouldn't have done it. After all, I'm paying for it. No insurance. He said, don't worry about it after going into his office to talk to him. He said they would wave some of the payment for me to have the root canal completed. I said okay, but I still have to save and pay my care credit down in order to finish, which would take about 8 months. He said that's fine. When it came time to get the root canal completed, they acted like they had no idea about waving some of the payment. I had to wait and save more. I contemplated going to another dentist to finish the root canal, but decided not to since the root canal specialist was going to do it and not Dr. Rickerby. The specialist did a good job with my first root canal. I decided Dr. Rickerby would never work on me again. I couldn't understand why he didn't let the specialist do the entire root canal in the first place like the specialist did the first time. Oh I think I know, he wanted to make sure I got the work done so he could make more money. Yes, I always had the impression that Dr. Rickerby wanted to make money from me. It makes sense considering using programs like care credit, the dentist gets their money almost immediately. With insurance, it takes time for claims to go through. I think as much as 8 months to get payments from insurances. Little does Dr. Rickerby knows, he caused me so much financial hardship when he decided to do what he wanted in my mouth just to make an extra buck. I'm still paying on the bill and its been a few years. Since I couldn't pay the card off in time, all the astronomical interest was added on. In the years I went there, I spent at least eight thousand dollars. After finishing my root canal, I never went back there again. Dr. Rickerby made some money from the unauthorized root canal, but he lost a customer that highly cares about his teeth that would have spent much more. He lost much more money in the long run because he wanted to be greedy in the moment. I didn't sue him because I liked him as a person and didn't want to go through all that. I just figured I'd never go to him again. Since leaving him, I have found that his dental prices are expensive. My new dentist in journal square, his prices are more reasonable. Interestingly, I don't get stains on my teeth anymore since leaving Dr. Rickerby. For some reason, I would get stains on my teeth even though I never had that problem before until I started going to Dr. Rickerby. I was told its normal, I'm getting older or could be what I'm eating. Well, I don't get stains now. Guess what? I'm older and I still eat the same foods and drink the same juices. Overall, before that incident, I considered Dr. Rickerby to be a decent dentist. We had a good relationship, which is important to me with my doctors, but what he did, I had no choice but to cease going to him. He seems like he knows his stuff though. Sorry for this long review. For years, I wanted to get this off my chest. My new dentist, Dr. Vahid is good so far. But hey, Dr. Rickerby was good too in the beginning. So, I shall see how my new dentist goes. read more

Even 1 star is too much to award this absolute crook of a dentist! He hides his true identity by hiring likable staff-who get you through the payment procedure, but once the money is out of your hands and into their register-you are on your own. I generally like visits to the dentist,but don't get me wrong-it's not like I look forward to them, and anxiously count down the days on my calendar, but out of all the health/checkup visits, a visit to the dentist is the least frightening. That is, until I met the Rickerby. I had to get work done on my teeth, due to a door that hit my face at work (which I was still emotionally upset about)-however, GENIUS Dr. Dickerby kept insisting that "maybe it occurred because I was intoxicated"...gee, well that's strange, since i don't drink alcohol!!! As if this wasn't already awful dental practice, when I came back for my third visit he practically tried to FORCE me to get a dental procedure that wasn't covered in my dental insurance (even though he kept saying that it was) and was upset when I told him I didn't have the money for it. This reflected in the attitude change, which was noticeable when he was forcefully doing the cheaper procedure and handling my teeth with absolute reckless care. He is a money hungry man, who has very little knowledge in how to behave properly with customers. Sure, if you're willing to fork-out an extra couple hundred dollars so you can adhere to his "expertise" advice, he'll handle you with care, and a huge fake smile. However-if you're someone who works hard for their money, he'll practically shun you and make you regret ever stepping into that place-Avoid this man. read more
