I've been here quite a few times. Actually yelp says I'm the duke of this place so I might have the most check ins here. I usually get decent service here however last night was really odd. First of all there is someone in the back room hocking up crap from their throat every few minutes and spitting it somewhere. The lady that did my massage was constantly talking and giggling right above my head and I guess she talks with he hands because she kept taking hand off and I guess pointing or gesturing at people or things. Some dude was in there loudly talking about taking his pants off and how it should be fine and when I got up after my massage was over there was a guy taking his shirt off. This place is a open floor area with everyone a couple feet from each other and you keep your clothes on. Also it was odd I was asked to pay upfront this time, never had that happen at any place much less here. Maybe they are getting a lot of people not happy and not wanting to pay. I usually do the 90 min for $40 and I wish I kept track of the time as I really feel I was given the 60 min as I think I should have had 30 min on my back and got maybe 15-20. Came in on a Saturday afternoon with a girlfriend. We set an appt and then asked to move to 1pm and we were still 10 minutes late oops! I wasn't expecting much since it's a cheap chinatown reflexology massage. It's located in the same plaza as Tan Tan on Ranchester. The front desk is very small and the lady behind it I couldn't tell if she was annoyed with us or just normally that way? There was one person waiting when we arrived the lady told us to wait 10 minutes. So we did what most folks would do snap chat and yelp duh! I had a man who performed my service, I chose the $30 for an hour combo package. You get a yelp offer of lavender foot soak I believe it was, the lady did write it down on my stamp card for my next visit to reedem. I have been so tense and knotted from sitting on my crappy office chair all the time this massage helped me to relax and was cheaper than seeing my usual guy. The man who worked on me did a good job had the perfect amount of pressure for me. The only down fall was his daughter or grand daughter was there at work with him. I could hear her asking him for help or something and he would stop in the middle of my massage to help her. She sounded cute and all but after a few times it was annoying. I'd come back to redeem the yelp offer but not sure if I would again after that. read more

I hadn't been to one of these reflexology places, so I only knew what to expect from the tips I'd been given by some friends. In a nutshell, you get a lot more than foot reflexology for $20. They spend about 20 minutes working your feet, 10 on your arms, 10 on your head, 10 on your shoulders, and 20 on your back. It's an impressive deal. My girlfriend and I swung by on a whim one Saturday afternoon. They were entirely busy and asked us to return in half an hour, so we swung by the Teahouse across the street before coming back for the massages. My girlfriend was worried that this was one of those sketchy "rub-and-tug" places, but I assured her that it wasn't. She was more at ease when she walked to the back and saw the six tables in the main room, and two adjacent rooms with what looked like two additional tables each. While we'd been waiting, a Hispanic guy walked in looking for a "full body massage." He had this awkward smile on his face, peeked in the back, looked disappointed when it wasn't the type of establishment, and said he'd come back, but we don't think he'd actually return. They start you off with a foot soak, work your head, and work their way down to your feet, then flip you over and work your back. The place seems fairly sanitary, the beds are comfortable, and the staff-- though seemingly overworked-- strikes me as seriously aiming to give everyone a relaxing experience. The only real knocks on this place is that they have a credit card surcharge and you never know when they'll be busy or free. I figure that these two features are actually par for the course for this type of establishment, so I might have to update my review, but I sprung for the punch card (buy five sessions, get one free), so we'll see how the next couple of trips go. read more

Not quiet, not relaxing, my technician talked in a loud voice during the massage, clearly was sick and coughing and wheezing on me, her massage strokes were fast and furious, but no pressure - and the tempo too fast to be relaxing. She got up and her shoes were loud and inappropriate for the task, and left for a few minutes 2 or 3 times during our massage. Spraying disinfectant (because she was sick) every time she walked away. At one point she hit my leg and told me to RELAX. I have had MANY massages and this wasn't in the top 50. I paid but didn't offer a tip - I left and the technician followed me to my car demanding a tip. This massage was more expensive than others I've had in the area, and I won't be back. (Side note - my 2 companions enjoyed their experience- but were aware of my tech being sick, loud, and not relaxing. ) read more

For those who get massages often, this establishment has employees who massage with gloves. Having been a professional masseur myself, I pride in providing a delightful experience. Here at Joy, don't expect it. I got in about 15 minutes before I had to throw in the towel. 3 minute hot water soak, chicken scratching on my sole, dead skin rubbing off the side of my foot, more chicken scratching and prepare to move onto the next foot. Now I understand sometimes people do different things and I am open minded to new techniques and experiences... But I don't know how to say it.. it's just bad. I came in with my fiancé looking for a quick massage and although my experience was pleasant for the most part. My finance's experience was downright disgusting and we will never return. My masseuse was nice, she made sure to ask me if I prefer rough or soft. She noticed I had back pain, which I've had for about two weeks now, and was gentle around that area, but still focused so that it would help. My fiancé's masseuse was an absolute nightmare: 1. He was rough, didn't ask whether she'd prefer soft or hard. Which, I guess, my fiance should have mentioned something so we can give him somewhat of a pass. 2. He didn't use any lotion or oil, so not only was he rough but it gave her Indian burns. 3. His hands reeked of cigarettes, and since he didn't use any oils, that was all she could smell. 4. He was burping as he was massaging her. 5. He was a mouth breather so his cigarette breath kept blowing in her face. Then we noticed that they continually use towels and rags for each client, not replaced as they should be. In the end, pay whatever extra you can to go somewhere else. Before you read the rest of the review, I need to preface that I am somewhat green when it comes to massages and don't have too much to compare to. I've only had two massages my entire life...once at a resort in Cancun, and another at West Gray Thai Massage here in Houston - both times were AMAZING, so I've always wondered why I didn't get them more often. So when my other half suggested we go get a massage here, I said why not - she said a friend recommended it, and it was only $20 for a full hour. Too good to be true, right? The place is located in the same strip center as Tan Tan, right across from the Chase bank. We went in and asked for the $20 dollar massage, and were promptly led to the back. There was one big communal room with dim lights playing some Sunny 99.1-ish music; 6 beds were arranged in a 2x3 grid, a few feet apart from each other. Each bed was occupied, so it looked like the place was pretty popular, although the clientele looked more like older Asian adults. We were led into a separate smaller, semi-private room with two adjacent beds. The whole environment felt just a little off, although it's a bit hard to articulate why. Then came the massage - which was the strangest and most painful thing I have ever experienced in my life!! You start by placing your feet into a bucket of hot water. The therapist then proceeds to push on various pressure points on your body from head to toe, and each spot he pushed on was excruciating! It was so painful when he was pushing on my scapula that I was about to turn around and clock my masseuse in the face! I was grimacing the whole time and I kid you not I think I started to shed some tears. Not relaxing at all, and nothing like any massage I had received in the past. The only part of the massage I would say I enjoyed was when they stretched my gluts and hamstrings...I give the place no less than 3 stars because the therapists do work super hard for the whole hour. So...I don't know what this reflexology thing is, but it's not a traditional massage. It seems more like some alternative medicine/manipulation type thing. Usually go to Midtown Reflexology, but they have gone up to $40 w/o tip. So I decided to span my horizons AND make a day of ASIAN TOWN. Saw the reviews on Yelp and went with Joy. It is a small, clean, soothing music, smiling faces. The petite young lady named Apple did my reflex massage on a regular massage table. My feet soaked in very warm water while she worked my head, arms, neck and shoulders. Very nice. She did my feet for about 30 minutes, complete with hot towels. Then I flipped over and got my backside, legs and neck. Best reflexology massage I've ever had FOR THE MONEY! $$$20 BUCKS!!! Then I tipped her $10 for all the hard work. I went there at 9:00 at night with a friend from work who has been telling me about this place over and over again. The massage is exactly $20.00 for a serious full body massage. I tip an additional $10 because it's worth it. My first impression was this place has to have the "no-no" that you hear about at massage parlors. However, upon walking in and seeing the setup I immediately realized it wasn't that at all... it was unlike any massage I've had and I really liked the whole layout it to be honest. The ambiance was peaceful and the music was soothing. I think because I'm a girl they went a little easier on me (which is still very hard for most of you).. and I asked for hard. However, I scare people with how much pressure I can really take. Just to give you an idea - I've had a 350 lb individual stand on me and walk without me cringing a bit... so you can imagine I like it very FIRM. I guess I could understand why some people would say the massage can be painful... because they really hit some awesome pressure points. I'm a new fan and will be back many many times - Next time, I'm asking for whoever walks on you - I'm dying to have that done! My friend's masseuse was walking on him! :) AWESOME!!! I wrote a review a few years ago and decided to give this place a try one more time. Things had improved so I kept going there regularly. But my last visit was horrible again. I took my friends who were visiting from Germany, to go with me. There were several problems this time. 1. the water they give to soak our feet in was cold. not even luke warm..just cold. 2. The guy who was massaging me, was in such a hurry to get the massage over with that he just rubbed me hard and fast not focusing on any pressure point whatsoever. I was almost at the edge of the seat and falling off ! 3. The massage ended 45 mins later. When I questioned he just said no it was 60 mins. Lies! 4. My friends also didnt have a good experience cuz their massuese were too harsh on them. one even got on top of him. 5. So we didnt tip well. Infact i only gave him $2 reluctantly. To our horror all the massuese stood there and demand that we give them atleast $10 for tip and actually took it from us. WTF ! This is extortion. I am thinking of reporting the place. read more

I made an appointment for 6 people. 4 clients for women and 2 clients for male. Perfect. Arrived on time.. got seated right away. Im a foot massage fanatic and I think I've found a secondary location in case my first location gets too busy. In case anyone doesn't know.. the staff speaks minimal english.. which I myself even had a hard time umderstanding.. but that shouldnt detour you from getting a massage bc massages are made for silence! My referral would be for Vick.. nice gentlemen that really does a strong but non hurting massage. I dont have much of a complaint but two things I noticed.. 1st thing when I did get turned over for my back massage .. the hole where your face goes does smell like mildew or smelt of undried cleaning products. It didn't smell like fungus bacteria or such, but smelt more of a lysol that didn't get really dried before putting on the cover for the hole.. make sense?? Its not unbearable or potent. . Its just something that was light. Im guilty of cleaning things with lysol and not fully letting it dry bc im in a rush half the time.. nothing a cleaning and airing out cant do! 2nd I notice when my friends pulled out there card to pay... the receptionist had to take the card and ran somewhere outside or next door to process the card. I dont know how many people would be ok with that but she did come back right away with the receipt. So im assumimg they were ok with it! However, I always come with $40/50 if the $20 massage was superb then they get my whole $50.. if not superb but mediocre then I'll give $35/$40 .. but overall I've been here a few times and they haven't disappointed me yet.. its really hard to find 5/6 female masseuse to work at the same time.. straight men always want women to massage them.. uneasy ego I suppose.. anyhow that'll be a different subject.. hah! read more

WORST MASSAGE EVER!!! I placed a visit to JFR and I MUST say it was the WORST massage I have (ever) received. As soon as my masseuse began massaging me, I made it "clear" to her to be gentle. As she proceeded, within two minutes I had to tell her once again to be gentle, she then said Okay. I then had to repeat myself again but this time she acted like she did NOT hear me. At this point I was just hoping this massage would not get worse. Then, at one point the pain was intolerable that I ended up sayin, "Ahhhhhh!" She then tells me are you okay? I told her once again to be gentle, she said okay. By this point, I just wanted this to be over. I told her to hold on since she was being harsh and careless. She acted like she was deaf and continued to hurt me. The masseuse could see my facial expressions due to the pain she was inflicting on my body. Once this torturous experience was over, I could hardly get up. Whenever we finished paying, they had the audacity to call us back in to verify the tip we left was $4 dollars, when in reality NO TIP should had been left for her. The other individual I came with had a better experience than I did. I just wanted to make sure there was NO TIP for my masseuse since she did a horrible job. I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone. I left worse than I originally came in. Yea, $20 was too good to be true in my experience. Pay the extra money folks!!!! read more

I have been to several of these foot massage places and Joy remains my favorite. Joy's atmosphere is better than most foot massage parlors. They keep the place dark enough for you to relax but bright enough for you to walk around. Out of all the times I've been there, I have never heard them play "loud and upbeat Chinese music" as another reviewer claimed. I've only heard them play soft piano music. I personally would've preferred no music at all but it didn't bother me. They have one big room with about 8 beds and another small private room with two beds. They offer you a free bottle of water at the end of the massage. Don't expect the staff to speak fluent English. If they did, they probably wouldn't be working there and charge only $20 per hour. Be patient and kind, most of these people work very hard. If you use short, precise words, they will understand what you need. So far I haven't been disappointed with a single massage I've had there. I generally prefer to go during weekday daytime. That's when they have the least amount of customers. I would also highly recommend calling them ahead of time and reserve the room if possible. I usually go with my wife so I'm not sure if they would reserve the room for you if you go by yourself but it doesn't hurt to ask. If you can't get the room, it isn't the end of the world. This place was cheap. The workers work hard for an hour to earn their $20 bucks. Had a weird atmosphere at first, like a brothel den or something, but then you get used to it and see that they aren't doing anything nefarious. They don't speak much English so communication is an issue. There is soft, medium and hard massage. I got the medium...in some parts it was just right, or soft even....in other parts, it almost hurt. But in the end I felt better after the session while I sat at Classic Kitchen to eat my lunch. If you haven't done this...try it. Get a massage, then go eat afterwards...you won't believe how much better the food tastes and how much your appetite/stomach feels. And you are super relaxed while you eat. The back massage hurt a little at times but once it ended I felt like a new person. My body felt limber and stress free. I stopped coming here about a year ago. Too many bad experiences that I told myself not to return. Most notably the intense smell of cigarettes and hacking/heavy breathing all over your body was so distracting I said forget it. (Plus the jump in price from $20 to $30.) BUT... I moved closer to the area and thought to try it out again. This was the BEST experience I've had! I was greeted by a man in a dress shirt who spoke English and showed me to my bed.
