Some folks say you can judge the quality of a Chinese take-out by their eggroll, but this is an ill-advised metric. You should judge it by the food you would normally order. Makes more sense, no? For me, it seems whenever I have a nasty cold, which is infrequent, I long for Hot and Sour Soup and Chinese Fried Chicken Wings. In my mind, this will cure what ails me. So I decided to try Joy Wok which turned out a total no-show. The setup is typical, a tiny waiting area with two mismatched worn-out seats, the lonely soda fridge and the beat-up countertop framing the kitchen behind with scrambling staff nagging each other. No lucky cat waving it's arm to welcome customers either. I like that cat. I placed my order online and was given a half hour wait. I arrived on-time and was then told to wait a few extra minutes. I honestly believe that they prepared my entire order in the 7 minutes while I was there waiting to guarantee that someone was coming to pickup and pay for the order. Waiting for anything annoys me; this was strike one. It's not like they were swamped, this place is as inviting as a pair of very old sneakers. Normally I would opt for Cheng Du 23 in Willowbrook, which is also nearby, but they can get really busy and their prices are lofty. I wanted fast, cheap and decent and took a gamble. Let's move on to the outcome. We ordered the following: BBQ Wings, Hot and Sour Soup, Wonton Soup, a Sesame Chicken combo (w/pork fried rice and an eggroll incl.) and a Happy Family (protein/veggie stir fry special w/beef fried rice) Total was just under $50. The H&S soup, my specialty, needed microwaving, it was barely warm, and I literally just brought it home from a 5 minute drive. The consistency of this soup, because cornstarch is one of the ingredients, should be silky. Instead their version was gloppy, like wall primer. It also didn't have any of the wonderful fungi usually incorporated: no lily day buds, no cloud or wood ear mushrooms. These essential ingredients give H&S Soup its umami, so I had to add splashes of vinegar and Worcestshire sauce to compensate. Utterly disappointing. My wife's Wonton Soup was simply dumplings in broth, not even scallions dancing around. She said it tasted ok. Next I tried the BBQ wings - these were actually good. Colossal sized, heavily breaded, super crispy and relatively moist inside. Drenched not in a typical KC style sauce but more of a salty/sweet plum sauce, the same stuff they put on spare ribs. For $8 you get about 10 good sized wings. Next was my Unhappy Family. This should have contained a medley of delectable morsels of pork, beef, shrimp, chicken, scallops AND lobster along with assorted veggies in a secret ancient sauce. Reality was 50% veggies, 30% sliced roasted pork, 20% chicken and beef. There were maybe 2 shrimp, and the scallop and lobster both apparently escaped, probably still hiding somewhere underneath my driver's seat. Oh and my beef fried rice, lest I forget - cold and dry like it had been prepared way earlier in the week. It would have needed a whole re-frying session to bring it back to life. Amount of beef was decent but I think it may have come from another order a long time ago that someone forgot to pick up. Now for the cherry on top: all the little details we have become spoiled on from Chinese taking-out were non-existent. Things like the plastic-wrapped fork/spoon/napkin that we like to collect in the kitchen drawer - none. The Happy Family of weakly-approximated Hot, Soy, Mustard and Duck sauce packets never left the distributor. The Invisible Fortune Cookie's messages may have read "Better Luck Next Time". Not even the take-out menu stapled to your brown bag - I mean nada effort. By now it should be safe to assume that I highly DO NOT recommend the Joyless Wok and will not be returning there with my business - maybe except for the wings when I catch another cold. I gave you one chance and you blew it by a mile. I do know 3 things though, The restaurant industry overall runs on thin margins, Chinese take-outs in particular are usually known for quick food at a decent price and we are somewhere in a recession, battered by inflation. But if you have to cut that many corners to survive, then increase your prices to maintain quality. But I won't have the wool pulled over me twice. And let's not even talk about that eggroll. read more

I had fully intended to go out for dinner when I arrived in Fairfield tonight, but the deplorable New Jersey traffic wore me out and I was dog tired when I checked into my hotel. I decided to go the delivery route, checked out the Joy Wok menu, called in my order and a half hour later--it was here. The Hot and Sour Soup was a very reasonable $2.55 and it was a pretty darned good pint of soup. Great flavor to the zippy and slightly salty broth (nothing weak or watered down here) with plenty of tender tofu and vegetables. What a great start ! I went with Combination Plate C 37 (Mongolian Beef) served with rice and an egg roll for $8.25. The egg roll was much better than I expected- no grease or shine to it at all! Not a lot of meat except for some minced pork, but it tasted great. And how was the main course?? FABULOUS I asked for the Mongolian Beef to be "extra spicy" and it sure was. Lots of tender beef sautéed with scallions and onions in a super zippy brown sauce that was amazing with the fried rice. I added in a can of soda, and the whole deal ran less than $15 bucks. Without a doubt the worst NJ Chinese food we have ever had. The General Tso was dry, and not spicy (or hot for that matter) at all. Our General Tso came with Pork fried rice. Awesome. They did take my order, and to their credit the delivery was very quick. The dumpling filling was a bit bland, and a thick wrapper, but I loved the sauce. Scallion pancakes were oily. Egg roll was greasy. Spare ribs had a weird color, but decent taste. Apps were just a bit meh. General tsaos was nice- good crunch on the chicken. Wife liked her chicken and bean sauce. I stopped in here after a cold day, new neighborhood, not knowing the fare. It's a great little find, though parking is a challenge. Primarily a place for take out, they only have a scant few tables. I might be ordering the wrong dish. It was absolutely not worth the money. I ordered house fried rice and hot and sour soup. First, I don't know why the hot and sour shop is more expansive than the other soups. It has no meat or shrimp at all. It is no different than an egg drop soup but adding white pepper and vinegar. The most disappointment was the house fried rice. It is dry, has no favor. You got only a small amounts of tiny shrimps, diced roasted pork, sliced chicken. Non of them added any favor to the dish. No beef! That's the House? Normally, House means an assortment of meats, including beef. Should be special that representing their brand. Yes, the amount of 'food' you get was big, overfilling the container. But, the quality was not matching the price. If they want to save a buck, be selective; when an Asian showed up at the door to order foods, they should up the game a bit. I may give them another chance some other time. I have to say that whenever I try a new Chinese take out place for the first time, I always do it with my fingers crossed - hoping and praying that my decision was a good one. Thankfully this time it was! The first thing I like about Joy Wok is that you can order online. The menu is standard for a Chinese place but note that they also have some Thai dishes available if you're looking to change things up a bit. We got Chicken with String Beans, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Vegetable Fried Rice and Masaman Curry with Chicken (Thai). The food was very fresh tasting and well prepared (no excessive oil or sauce -- it tasted great but also felt healthy at the same time!). Received a flier with coupons in the mail... Our office does Chinese food lunch specials every Friday and I am not a big fan of where they have been going... I was excited to see this menu and how vast the selections were. Make sure you add an extra 10 minutes to your pick up time as they seem to be running late for every one. As I said, we do the lunch specials and they did not disappoint. All lunch specials range from 5.25 - 5.75 and they come with either a choice of soups (won ton, egg drop or hot and sour), or egg roll, or soda. And they come with choice of rice, white or fried.. the fried is awesome! Full of peas, onions, carrots, sprouts and pork. Needed soy sauce for more flavor, IMHO. I ordered the shrimp with veggies. I asked for spicy sauce on the side. It was great! Shrimp (5 large) were cooked perfectly and came with a lot of mixed veggies. My co-workers were all happy with theirs as well. Only complaint was that the scallion pancakes were not light and flaky.. kind of like lead weights. Most of that order went into the garbage and the fried dumplings needed more sauce... they were a bit skimpy on the sauce serving. We WILL be back. read more

Waited for this place to open and we knew it had when a menu got delivered (this is a good sign, it was legally delivered as opposed to being hand stuffed illegally into mailboxes). Laziness set in on the weekend and we ordered a feast using the 20% off coupon. Ordered Steamed Vegetable Dumpling, Cold Sesame Noodles, Tofu Teriyaki, Roast Pork w/ Garlic Sauce, and Kong Pao Chicken. We asked 'extra spicy' on everything. They eventually called us saying the order was ready as we were going to pickup (suppose they use CallerID). Once arriving to pick up the order, they took the coupon without issues and the 40$ order was reduced to about 32$. They offered a comp soda but since we dont drink that filt, we were given some cookies. (They can improve here by telling you over the phone you qualify for a comp and giving a choice - anything except soda! An egg roll would have been nice.) Coming home, we unpacked everything and noticed that there was a container of rice missing, minus 1 star for lack of attention to detail. Also, they dont give you the option on the menu for brown rice, even though under additional items the white rice and brown rice are the same cost. In regards to the food, the Steamed Vegetable Dumpling looked homemade, however, smaller than we have seen from other Chinese restaurants. The Cold Sesame Noodles had an interesting ginger flavor addition, but were very very light on the peanut sauce - they need to give more of it. The Tofu Teriyaki was just sheets of Tofu in sauce, not vegetables or anything else... looked quite boring. The Roast Pork w/ Garlic Sauce and Kong Pao Chicken were decent, however, while the Kong Pao Chicken filled my dish to the top, they skimped out on the Roast Pork w/ Garlic Sauce. Also, its important to note, that the 2 meat entrees came in the new fangled plastic rectangular boxes (not the old fashioned style paper box containers) but they were of the deep variety, so it more than likely was a quart (if its actually filled to the top!!!). Taste wise, it was decent but there were no whole chile peppers, as would be accustomed with Szechuan Style orders such as this. Instead, looks like they gave extra White Pepper and added a chunky chili which resembled salsa. It was different. The next day when I reheated it, I threw in a tablespoon of red chili flakes and it made the dish much better. So in other words, even when the Szechuan Style dishes were ordered 'extra spicy', they were not. In summary, the place has potential, but they need to iron out the kinks - remember to pack all components of the order, dont skimp out on peanut sauce, and fill the containers to capacity, not partially. The jury is still out, but I would have been quite pissed had it not been for the 20% off coupon. read more
