We ordered Chinese takeout from T.S. Ma in Upper Montclair a few weeks ago. We received a menu flyer in the mail and spontaneously decided to order in after a long work day for both of us. If you call the order in and say you'll pay in cash, you get a small discount. Cash is king, so that's what we did. I called in the order and my husband picked up at the T.S. ma. He said that everyone there was friendly and helpful when he stepped through the door. The food was pretty good. My husband was a big fan of the orange ginger tofu. I liked their moo shu vegetable, but I should have liked a some wood ear mushroom in there. The vegetable fried rice was a repeat order. read more

A small place near upper Montclairs downtown. They serve Chinese food and it is to go only . I ordered sesame chicken with brown rice , it is a bit pricey compared to other places especially since only take out . However, the chicken is fresh and tastes delicious ! They also use antibiotic free chicken and have fresh source produce so you get what you pay for ! If your craving good Chinese take out this is definitely the spot for you ! read more

There's your local American-Chinese food, traditional Chinese food, and then there's T.S. Ma that fits in between the two. A friend of mine only orders from here. I finally took the plunge to try it out. Now for food. Egg drop soup (5/5) - Not hard to mess up. Good flavor and umami. General Tso's Wings (5/5) - No weird bones--just good wings in their sweet sauce. Ma's Braised Beef Wrap (5/5) - Delicious thin slices of beef shank in a wrap with hoisin. This was a great way to Segway into our entrees. Chicken Chow Fun (4/5) - Nice wide noodles with chicken and onion in a sauce. Nothing amazing but still solid. General Tso's Shrimp (5/5) - I should chosen something else because I got the wings in the same style. The shrimp was fresh, large, and really good. They offer dumplings, and even Peking Duck. The downside is you have to pre-order the duck two days in advance. That's too long when I want it now. Another cool thing is they bring the food in a branded heat insulated bag to keep your food warm. I love that. The price is a slightly more than your local folks, but the couple extra dollars are worth it. This might be our go to from now on. read more

I was running errands in upper montclair the other day and figured i'd finally give this place a try. Their online ordering menu was too chaotic for me, I'll leave it at that. Inside is tiny and it appears to be for pick-up only. Overall the food was just okay. The general tso's chicken sauce is very thin and sweet. Very different from the typical sauce you'd expect at a standard american chinese place. It wasn't bad but not what we expected. I would not order it again if i'm craving GT. The lo mein was a little bland and 95% noodles, and even the fixins were just a sprinkling of cabbage. The best item we got hands down was the fried chicken wings. that is probably the only thing we'd come back for. overall an okay place but not worth going out of your way for! read more

This is the Ritz Carlton of Chinese food. It may be expensive but worth every penny. They even offer light or dark meat for their meals. Which is a great option. Don't get me wrong this isn't always what you want when you want Chinese. Sometimes and by sometimes I mean most of the time you just some want greasy hole in the wall Chinese. For the other times this is the place. I believe they only offer delivery or pick up now since the pandemic so you can't dine in. If you want the dining out experience there is another great spot on Valley road a few minutes away. read more

This place is the reigning world champion of Chinese Food takeout. They are take out only so don't expect a date night under the candle light. However if you are craving good Chinese food and you want it as fast as possible - this is the place. How fast is TS Ma? I live maybe a total of 5 minute drive from it. Oftentimes when I order on my PC, come downstairs and drive up to TS Ma - the food is ready for me. This is the Flash style efficiency this place posses. As far as the food quality - it's always good. My kids love fried rice from here and Singapore Style noodle. Vegetable dishes are always fresh. Also consider the house specials here - especially the Crispy Szechuan - insert meat here-. They are fantastic. All in all we love having this establishment in the neighbourhood. read more

A great option for Chinese takeout. Placed my order online and everything was prepared exactly to my liking. My order was ready when I arrived and it came packaged neatly. We returned after many years and found that the food has changed. First, the prices has gone up 50%. We ordered chicken fried rice and it seems that the cooks threw a few pieces of boiled chicken into the brown rice and toss it around. The rice was not fried, no egg, or veggies, no soy sauce or any kind of favoring! The mixed chicken and veggies has almost no sauce in it. My mother complained that it was "DRY". We also ordered Gen Tso chicken which was heavily sweetened. $60.00 worth of bland, uncreative cooking! This is the first time I ever complained about T.S Ma. What happened?????? read more

I have been ordering take out from TS Ma for 15+ years. We have ordered over 100 times and our food has never been anything less than perfect! Everything on the menu is fantastic, they have always delivered to me in Nutley and it is always on time (usually early) and the food is always hot and packaged professionally. They actually left something out of my order today and when I called, they had it at my front door so quick I was shocked. This is far and away the best Chinese restaurant in North Jersey. I just wish they still had an eat in restaurant (but I just go to Wyckoff to dine in). If you've never had food from here, try it, you will NEVER go anywhere else again!! read more

Im very hesitant to call in my order to any restaurant. I really wanted T.S.Ma. I tried to order online but after a few crashes. I called. A very pleasant and patient man took my order over the phone. Shrimp lomein, chicken fried rice and spicy string beans with chicken all large. Food arrived hot and well packaged. This is the healthiest Chinese food your going to get without losing the flavor. I forgot how large the portions were so it'll be Chinese for two or three nights. I have been frequenting this establishment for many years. It was my go to for fresh, high quality Chinese cuisine. The dine-in experience was great and even included tea service. Fast forward to Covid times and they reopened for takeout only. Disappointing but at least they reopened, right? I asked if they were going to put the dining area back and I was told "No" and this is due to the boost in takeout orders since the pandemic situation. While I have to say that the General Tso has stayed consistent and maybe even improved, other entrees have fallen below my expectations. Recently, I ordered shrimp chow mein and house special fried rice. The flavor was excellent but the shrimp weren't the best quality. I ate some of both and pushed the shrimp to the side. A few hours later, I woke up to a headache that was out of this world. Better known as the MSG headache my body has been so kind enough to alert me with on numerous occasions. I've never experienced it here though. It is with great regret that I have to wonder if TS Ma is now sacrificing the quality of their food for speed and volume. read more

Thomas was nice enough to respond to my review, then had Anthony reach out to me to make things right. Anthony left a message & when I called back I had a chance to chat with Vincent, who was very sweet. He offered to either provide a refund or give them a chance to make the meal again. I chose the latter. Now this was the TS Ma that I came to know and love. I'm a firm believer that customer service is as important, if not more, than the food, and TS Ma went above and beyond in this regard. And the General Tso's chicken was flavorful and moist. Original Review 1/1/24 - It gives me no pleasure to write this review, but unfortunately it's necessary. After the whole covid fiasco, TS Ma just isn't the same anymore. Prices have increased and portions, taste, and quality decreased. I ordered a lunch special on Saturday, 12/30, to take with me to work. When I sat down to eat, to say the food was bad is an understatement. I ordered General Tso's Chicken with a side of egg fried rice. Besides having no flavor, which is very strange to begin with, the chicken tasted old and reheated, and the egg fried rice was soggy and tasteless as well. I tried to eat the chicken, but it wasn't working out. It was hard, hard to cut, and hard to chew. I ate half of the rice, but even that was pretty bad. So I wound up eating the little bag of noodles they included with the lunch, and a bag of pretzels and a granola bar from the vending machine. Since I wasn't able to eat the thing, I took it home and decided to take it back to show them how bad it was. But I worked on Sunday too, so I didn't have a chance to call the restaurant until Monday as soon as they opened. I explained the situation to the person who took my call and asked to have the meal made again. I also said i would bring the entire meal back (including the soup) just to show them how bad it was. I was told there was nothing they could do since it was days later (it was a day and a half), and they couldn't take back old food. I explained I only wanted them to see for themselves that the chicken wasn't good, and I couldn't return sooner since I worked long hours all weekend. But all I got was "Yea, well I worked this weekend too." Okaaay. What the hell that had to do with my situation I have no idea. When I pushed back a little I was told a manager would call me. It's Wednesday night. I won't hold my breath waiting for that call. Look, I work 6 days a week. I don't eat out often given how expensive everything is nowadays. Food is too precious to throw out, but I had no choice since it was inedible and it broke my heart to do so. So, shame on the woman for the non caring attitude and flip response, and shame on TS Ma for taking advantage of customers with bad food that's way too overpriced. The General Tsao could have used some more heat but otherwise everything was amazing! The food is good but these people are cheap greedy a'holes. Ask for a spicy homemade mustard to be thrown into an order I'd already placed online and I'm totally given the runaround. Told I'd have to pay separately for the tiny little mustard. Are you kidding me? I just ordered $50 worth of food and you want my credit card number to charge me FIFTY CENTS? We picked up takeout from here - generous portions and they have set up a pickup table so you don't have to go inside the restaurant as a covid precaution. I liked how the food overall was not too salty and not over-sauced. The Shanghai Meatballs was the only dish that was too salty for me; seemed like the braise was too heavy on soy sauce. Recommend the: - Beef Chow Fun: you'll need to order veggies on the side tho because this only comes with onions. - Tofu and Mixed Veggies in brown sauce: fresh and seasoned lightly. - Fish Filet in ginger and scallion sauce: they keep it nice and simple. I didn't love the vegetable dumplings - the wrapping was a little more like a bao and was dyed a very artificial green color. I thought it had an unusual taste for a dumpling. Stick with the scallion pancakes as an appetizer, which were not greasy and not flaky, almost more like a flat bread. read more

I've only gotten T.S. Ma for takeout once after my now husband moved out of Clifton in 2018, but the veggie chow fun and mapo tofu tasted the same as it did back then, so I'm guessing the quality hasn't changed. TS Ma is the best Chinese takeout place I've ever had and I wish I lived closer!! I've gotten chicken and broccoli, and shrimp/chicken in spicy garlic sauce (not that spicy at all and a flavorful sauce), and the you can taste the quality and freshness of the shrimp, chicken, and vegetables. I love how their vegetable chow fun and mapo tofu isn't greasy or oily, which happens at a lot of takeout places. The Montclair location is still takeout only (and delivery? I don't live close enough for delivery anymore so I'm not sure), but that's what I've always done anyway so not dining in isn't an issue for me. read more

MA is a wonderful Asian eatery nestled in a small strip mall, located in Wycoff, NJ The shrimp fried rice is probably the best I have ever had, the juicy pork buns were amazing and the crab Rangoon is awsome. I highly recommend the hot tea, which is amazing. I went with my wife, son and his girlfriend without a reservation and they accomidated us! I highly recommend TS Ma to anyone who would like a gourmet Asian dining experience. read more

** EDIT *** I spoke to the manager Anthony - and he not only apologized but also offered me a refund due to the mistake of the wrong food, and the timing of my order being way off. I upgraded this from 1* to 4* As a huge fan of this place in the past - I had friends in town this past weekend and wanted to treat them to the best Chinese food in the area. Knowing they are very busy on the weekends - I called ahead and requested a 6:30pm pick up. I was confused at 5:47pm why I got a text from them that my order was ready - so I just chalked it up as a system glitch - since the person on the phone confirmed when I ordered it would be ready "around 6:30" When I arrived - I saw my name on the screen that the order was ready. When given the total - it was about $10 more than I anticipated - but these days, I understand that a lot of restaurants are increasing prices - so I didnt question it. However as I was walking to my car - I saw the receipt and the "Pork Buns" I ordered were 2X the normal price. When I went back in and asked why the price was so expensive - they told me they had 2 different pork buns - and wrote up the order for 2 of the more expensive ones. If there are 2 different items on the menu that are basically the same thing - shouldn't the person on the phone clarify which ones I was ordering - instead of instantly putting them in as the more expensive one? Everyone in the place looked confused as what to do - so I just left. Needless to say - when I got home - it was clear the food had been sitting around for over 45 minutes. The "steamed" pork buns (not the pan fried ones I ordered) were soggy and disgusting. The other dishes were saved by microwaving them to reheat - but was not as awesome as the dishes usually were. Very disappointed that they knowingly ripped me off by assuming I wanted the more expensive ones, and they could not figure out when to start cooking an order for a specific time. YES - I know it was the weekend and they were busy - which is why I gave them over 2 hours notice for my order. I will give them 1 more chance before writing them off completely. For the record - I know the food service industry is under many challenges - but the customer should always come first and their goal is to provide us with quality food. read more
