I signed up to have Avenue Dental as my primary dental provider through an insurance plan. Man, was that a bad choice. I never even had a chance to see the dentist. The people answering the phone were courteous, but they had a stern unwavering dedication to nonsensical office rules. They made it nearly impossible for me to schedule an appointment. I read many positive reviews about Dr. Wong online, but it didn't matter because her stringent office management made it so difficult for me to get an appointment. My insurance was going into effect on the first of the month. Well Vero at the dentist office told me she would not even schedule me an appointment until it was in effect. She wouldn't even put my name on the calendar until the insurance company verified me as a patron. So I asked for a cash patient appointment spot until my insurance went into effect, and Vero told me that would mean the staff would have to do too much paperwork to ever be able to change it. They told me it would take days or weeks to change me from cash patient to insurance patient. "Sorry sir, that's an office rule, it's just how it's done." Well, I investigated a little bit because it sounded to me like the staff was just being lazy. And I was right. I called my insurance and changed my primary provider. My new office instantly scheduled me an appointment for the first day I was eligible and told me that changing my insurance info took minutes, not the days that Joyce Lee's office claimed. I shudder to think what would have happened if I had an office emergency. My suggestion is to not even bother with this office. read more

It was quite a relief to find Dr. Wong after a horrible experience elsewhere. I had 3 cavities filled recently and while it was still a bad experience (always will be, I have major dental work anxiety) it was the best I have had so far. She was thorough in her work and my teeth feel wonderful. I was not even very sore afterwards. The last place I went was so rough I couldn't eat for an entire day. Dr. Wong and the staff at Avenue Dental are fantastic!!! My wife and I decided to give them a try after seeing a Localiter.com special for cleaning, exam, and xrays. Going to the dentist isn't anyone's favorite past time, so having a good experience is worth sharing. Our cleanings went great, they did a wonderful job of explaining our dental situations. I needed a few cavities filled, my wife's teeth were perfect, so she got away scott-free. I am self-employed and have to pay my dental expenses out of pocket, Dr. Wong and staff worked great with my situation. I will certainly return for future cleanings and any dental work needed. .....Almost forgot, they have flatscreens hovering over your chair while they work on you. I don't mind watching ESPN while getting my grill cleaned! read more

I had my appointment with Dr. Wong last month because I was experiencing tooth pain and also was due for a dental cleaning. Dr. Wong was very courteous and has great bedside manner. She did the cleaning herself and said my impacted wisdom tooth is most likely the cause of the pain. She did a great job and I highly recommend her! There is an annual membership that is affordable if you don't have insurance. She referred me to Dr. Jake Duong who comes into her office to do the teeth extractions. He extracted 2 of my wisdom teeth and I am very pleased with the service! I highly recommend as well! read more

I very much appreciate that Dr. Chong called me personally to explain the situation and to apologize. Dr. Wong was one of the only non-chain dentists on the list covered by my dental insurance, so I gave her a try. She's very nice - but I wouldn't recommend her due to her communication and business practices. Everything seemed fine until 2012. After that, I was told dental cleanings would only be done 8-9 a.m. Monday and Tuesday mornings. Also, she now does the cleanings in about 15 minutes. (A periodontist told me that that is too short to do a good job, and I must say my teeth have never felt as untouched after a cleaning.) At my last cleaning, Dr. Wong recommended that I pay extra to get a fluoride treatment that no dentist had ever recommended to me before. When I didn't take her up on it, she told my insurance company (but not me) that I need to find another dentist. An honest and direct explanation would have been appreciated. But it took me many emails and phone calls over a period of weeks to find out the reason, and the response that finally came (after my "pulling teeth") was fairly vague, although it did mention the fluoride. It was signed "Avenue Dental", rather than with a person's name. Her office told me that she requires fluoride treatment of all her patients, and that she was unwilling to discuss the matter with me even if I want to get a fluoride treatment now. I have nothing against fluoride treatments. I would have gotten one, if I had known she requires it. Even the problem of quickie cleanings is tolerable. But I think her poor communication skills, or perhaps her unwillingness to communicate clearly, could lead to dental problems. A dentist is an adviser regarding teeth, and as with any adviser, you need to be able to communicate well or trouble could ensue. read more

Dr Wong is a very skilled dentist that replaced my crown and that has been holding very well. She is also a kind and caring dentist who will follow up after appointments to make sure the patient is ok. I highly recommend going the avenue dental if you've had bad or unpleasant experiences as this is a great experience! read more

I had one hour appointment with Dr. Wong. She completed new patient consultation, panoramic x-ray, bite-wings x-ray, and periodontal maintenance within that one-hour appointment. She was too busy and in a rush. Dr. Wong spent about 15 minutes on my periodontal maintenance. Later we found other dentists spent 45 ~ 60 minutes on the same treatment, and did a much delicate job. Dr. Wong suggested me periodontal maintenance since I had periodontal issue. Other dentist told me periodontal maintenance is generally necessary three months after periodontal scaling and root planning. In other words, Dr. Wong should have done a periodontal scaling, instead of maintenance, on my first visit. Maybe 15 minutes is not enough for a periodontal scaling, but why do I need a maintenance? Dr. Wong told me I have one teeth needs be filled. She didn't want to spend another appointment for that filling. Instead, she wants to combine the filling with my next cleaning four months later. The combination is a good idea of improving Dr. Wong's outcome in one appointment, but my purpose of visiting dentist is to resolve existing problems as early as possible. I notice Dr. Wong and her staff didn't understand their insurance filling system well. They overcharged my wife's filling. Dr. Wong complained that my employer purchased a poor insurance for employees that only covers old-style filing, but not filling with composite materials. She said insurance company generally don't cover this new technology. That is not true after I check my insurance benefit. I noticed the over-charge after receiving the statement from the insurance company. After three calls and four months, I finally got the refund from Dr. Wong. My wife's tooth is very still sensitive half a year after getting filled by Dr. Wong. My review might be subjective, but we do hope Dr. Wong could slow down the treatment process, do a more delicate job, and do a better staff training. We understand that time is money for a dentist. That's true in any dental office, but the trust from patient is also important. Now we find a nice family dentist in South Austin. Every time we pay our new dentist, we feel their service well deserve it. read more

I really like Avenue Dental. It's a very clean, modern place. The waiting room has leather couches, a flat screen, and a large aquarium. The dental rooms are also equipped with flat screens attached to the chairs. Dr. Wong is super nice, and takes care of you. I used a groupon for my first cleaning and exam, and I'm so glad I did, because otherwise I'm not sure I would have been introduced to this place. I got a whitening kit for free with the groupon, and it didn't whiten my teeth much, but I read the reviews online and it works for some. (That seems to be all whitening kits). I ordered a dental appliance through her as well, and was initially disappointed because the expensive mouthguard tasted like plastic for a few months and seemed too thick. Dr. Wong listened to my concerns and remedied the situation. She also informed me that they are using the latest in dental appliances (and I'm sure that is why the cost is a little higher). Come to find out, denture cleaner makes all the difference in the world, too. I had been brushing my previous mouthguards with a toothpaste & brush, hydrogen peroxide, and even alcohol. But if you soak it in minty denture cleaner (which I love *sarcasm* to buy at my age), after one night it is just fine! This was one of those important things that a former assistant in her office failed to tell me. Thanks to Dr. Wong, who makes the effort to keep her customers happy, I am now very happy with the improved mouthguard, and I highly recommend Avenue Dental for all services. One last thing. I'm sometimes wary of dentists because we've all heard stories about them trying to make extra money off 'alleged' cavities. Well, I actually mentioned that I've had a problem like this in the past to her, and she was real when she told me that she hates to have to tell people when they have cavities because of this problem, and she is always supportive of the person getting a second opinion. Also, sometimes she IS the second opinion, and that she has given good news before (that the patient didn't have those 'alleged' cavities.) So I just want to add that she seems trustworthy, too. This service is the worst ever I have. It doesn't practice in a professional way at all. The cost is huge high and the accounting is a mess. The treatment quality is not good as well. She didn't know what was wrong when I felt the new treatment painful. After I talked to my friends, it was found this service is notorious in their views. I love Dr. Wong. I've had a couple root canals and cleanings with her and now I'm getting an Invisalign treatment and have very frequent checkups. I always have a million questions about my progress and the process, and Dr. Wong is always friendly and informative. I honestly look forward to my appointments with her. Avenue Dental ran an ad for an inexpensive dental cleaning. I went and got the hard sell for additional services and products. I subsequently went to another dentist who told me that my dental problems were not nearly as bad as Joyce Wong had represented. It was all about the "upsell". Very unpleasant experience. read more

If you have an HMO Plan this review is a must read. Pass on this dentist. I guess at one point she did not have enough people, but as time goes by service to patients with HMO plans keeps dwindling. I've had waits from at least 30 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes. They keep cutting times for the routine cleaning for HMO patients. The last time I went they were only seeing patients from 8-10 (if not 8-9). Now that has shrank to only Mondays and Tuesdays. I did not even ask for an appointment immediately, but before I move in less than two months. And the problem is that they have availability, but they don't make as much money on patients with a HMO plan so they limit the amount they take in. If you have availability in your schedule, have already seen me before and I clearly have a need to be seen before a certain time, then there should be some accommodation made. Finding a new dentist would be a pain to see once before I move, but they literally gave me no other choice. I've also gotten 2nd opinions on other services like whitening and invisalign and I would suggest you do to unless you want to throw away money. I don't have a problem with the quality of service, but if I can't get service than that's shouldn't even mean 1 star. read more

I waited for an hour past my appointment time before I even got in the dental chair. It took them 6 attempts before they got the x-ray machine working. The office seemed disorganized and my actual exam wasn't handled in a very professional manner. I left feeling confused about the expertise here because this was my first time with Dr. Wong---I was told I needed several expensive fillings even though I have never had a cavity before in my life and I have been caring for my teeth in the same manner as always in the year since my last check up. read more

I am here to write an update for my previous review on Dr. Wong. Dr. Wong is actually very considerate person. After she learned about my review and complain, she personally call me several times to explain me the details in bill calculation. ( I guess, previously what has happened, Dr. Wong was unaware or not updated with what has happened). But she know much better about what is the situation. It turned out that the insurance refused to pay for my last filling because it was maxed out the limitation, although, I did call in ask about this before I went to the office and got confirmation, I was still ok with my insurance. Based on this situation, she spent great amount of effort to helped me settle the billing issue and trying to find a mid-point that both the office managers and I can accept. She took half of the responsibility and bill off my shoulder. I felt much better after she contacted me and explained my what was the real reason, and showed me the process. I also very appreciate she spent her off work hour communicating with me, and try to help me. read more

Doctor Wong is so friendly and competent. I recently moved to Austin and landed in a "chain" dental office. The dentist there was rude and rushed me. I later found MyAvenueDental. Dr. Wong was patient with my concerns and very understanding. I never once doubted her professional opinions and my experience there has been great thus far. I had my first two cavities performed there and I did not feel any discomfort almost the day after the procedure. read more

Dr. Wong is very friendly however I will not be returning to this office. After scheduling my appointment over 1 month in advance and taking unpaid time off work, I arrived at my appointment only to find that they hadn't put me on the books. Although the waiting room was completely empty, they would not see me that day. Fast forward to 2 weeks later (yea, I gave them a second chance) they cleaned my teeth and did x-rays. Although in my 23 years I'd only had 1 cavity, Dr. Wong said if she "drilled into my teeth" there were "probably 4". I'm not one to fix things that aren't broken. I declined the $450 proposed treatment and 2 years later I have yet to feel or see signs of a true cavity. HORRIBLE SERVICE. IF YOU VALUE YOUR TIME FIND ANOTHER DENTIST Short version: the place gives you impossible/wrong instructions to follow and then punishes you for not following them Long version: 1. I called the dentist and the staff member said that they need my insurance information faxed to them by the insurance company in order to make an appointment 2. I called the insurance company, and they said that they need to confirm an appointment in order to send the information 3. I again called the dentist, and then I'm told that I indeed can make an appointment before getting the information faxed. Of course, no apology whatsoever for the confusion. 4. I make an appointment and think things are over, but then receive a phone call. Because the office does not receive phone calls or fax on Fridays (although people are actually working there) they need the insurance company to email them the insurance info in order to confirm my appointment. Again, of course, no apology whatsoever for the confusion, inconvenience or irritation. 5. I call the insurance company, and they say that they cannot just email information before confirming things with the dentist via phone. They say they'll send the information on Monday after confirming via phone. 6. I get a phone call on Friday from the dentist from the office and hear that "Because you didn't FAX your information, we will cancel your appointment." I ask if they can wait until Monday since I already confirmed the info will be sent on Monday. The staff member says that there are other people who needs to come into my appointment slot and that he cannot wait. And of course, no apology. What a waste of time, effort, energy, and peace of mind. read more

I appreciate Dr. Wong's friendliness and willingness to explain the treatment plan. She was happy to answer my questions and made me feel comfortable in trusting her with my cavity treatment. The only negative in my experience was that I told the front desk staff both over the phone and upon arrival that I had been a previous client, but they were unable to locate me in the system. However, when I told Dr. Wong this, she was able to quickly find my past files with x-ray pictures and previous treatments. So, I think the front desk staff would benefit from some more training on using the client records system. read more

I have had a great experience with Avenue Dental. Dr. Wong and her staff are extremely friendly and have taken great care of me as I have had to undergo some major dental work. After avoiding dentists for a number of years, the combination of finally having dental insurance and having a bad tooth I just couldn't ignore any longer got me in the door. I was in that bad spot where I knew I needed to go to the dentist in order to get things fixed, but the fear of what it would take to fix it made me hesitant. However, my experience with Avenue Dental has made me realize that such a fear was stupid. They have done a wonderful job of minimizing any pain and I've been extremely happy with the results. Also they have TV's at each chair and just give you the remote control so the time flies by. I highly recommend checking this place out next time you need a regular check up or need any dental work. read more
