None of the work on the deck was to code after repeatedly calling and texting with specific photos and videos to Mr. Santiago of all that needed to be done to bring it to code and code compliance written into the signed contract. The deck lacked flashing against the house in multiple places, the stairs were uneven and crooked, the railings were not to code, boards were cut unevenly, etc. Bottom line is we are left with a bigger mess than we started with and now have to completely tear up what was done incorrectly and pay a new builder to redo the deck without any refund from Mr. Santiago. Run from this company.

Our development (Homestead at Mills River) uses Mateo Construction for landscaping maintenance…read more Being new to the area a couple of years ago, we originally used a local hardscaping company who did an "okay" job for an inordinately high amount and they were pretty unreliable. We were not satisfied and decided to look elsewhere midway in our project. We first gave Mateo a smaller job. They did such an excellent job that we assigned them the full project at that point. We could not be happier. It was like night and day compared to the previous company we had hired. Mateo showed up every day and worked hard to stay on schedule which they did. That is more than I can say about the previous company. Mateo also gave us a fair price and did not price gouge us. The quality of their work is outstanding. We were amazed at how fast they got it done and how dedicated they were to getting it right. Because of how well they did when we first moved here, we made the decision to only use Mateo construction for our outdoor space. Incidentally, we had to rebuild our staircase off our deck during this project, and Mateo was even able to do that. Next, I want to discuss dedication. We were in the middle of the this huge landscaping project (which covered about an acre of our property) and it was not finished around the time that Hurricane Helene hit. We had all the new trees in our driveway (to be planted) and the mulch was supposed to be laid. The Wednesday afternoon before Helene hit us on Friday morning, Mateo Construction showed up with enough workers to secure our trees and pour mounds of mulch and lay boulders in that acreage. Otherwise, it was raw dirt that would have eroded into the homes beneath us. Our house sits at 2600 feet elevation. They even did this in the rain just to make sure that we were OK. After Helene passed, they came by to check on us. They uprighted some trees that fell over. We also use them in the winter for our 300+ foot driveway when it ices. We are loyal customers! We are beginning a large addition to our existing home. And, of course, we have chosen Mateo Construction to do the hardscaping and landscaping for this project.

They sent out the person who initially did my quote to tamp down the track marks, which was nice so I added $50 to the check for the fast response and attempt to fix it. This ended up being a severe mistake as I then discovered damage to my gate. Minor, but clearly nobody cared to take note of it, contact me about it or fix it. When I contacted again, I was told I must be confused on my part, as the careless team that runs heavy machinery through wet yards couldn't have been the same careless team that ran that heavy machinery up against a bolt, splitting the wood and bending it out of place. For this service, you're better off renting machinery from Lowe's and doing the damage yourself. I was told quote "this is an unusually slow time" as there's been a lot of competition from tree companies starting more work from the hurricane that came through. It's sounding like that competition has been the better option for people, and I didn't get that hint.
