I would love a Jrs like this in every city. The epitome of fun and great drinks and prices. What a safe and fun environment and a great night of partying. Every time I come here, it's a friendly crowd and friendly group of bartenders. I was upset that the pool table costs, but such is life I guess. I've been on a Sunday night and on a weeknight and both times it wasn't too crowded but was enough people that we weren't uncomfortable or anything. The place is extremely spacious, also! After months and months of longing to visit JR's, I finally made it! And loved it. I need to return to really get a lay of the land, but for now - I approve. A huge wrap around bar and stage greet you as you wander into this three-tiered bar. Rest assured, you are going to have a good time at JR's. The night I decided to visit was after a huge Yelp party I had been planning for a while. In short, I just needed a stiff drink. JR's delivered and more: There was a live drag queen performance happening. It couldn't have been more perfect. The bartender was incredibly friendly and attentive, despite the high maintenance (including myself) patrons at their bar, demanding drink after drink. While we chatted and gulped our generously-sized vodka sodas, we took in the entertainment as different performers belted out their favorite top 40 songs. However, the moderator between acts was the highlight of the show. She was hysterical and worked the crowd with ease. I can't wait to return the upstairs bar that overlooks Cedar Springs. Beer in hand, I will have a blast people watching all the excitement that constantly occurs on Cedar Springs. read more

Will not go back. The last few times I've gone, I remember why I don't like it. Crowd has generally been a group of pretentious, jaded (with some exceptions of course) folks. Last night, the hubby and I decided to walk down the strip after dinner. Went to Round Up and had a pleasant time), went to Woody's (always friendly), and then walked in the door to JR's. We had forgotten to put our masks back on but were in the process of doing so when the guy at the door made a smart-ass comment...something like "it's only been a year; get with the program" to my husband. I thought I heard it wrong and asked the guy to repeat himself. He again said the same thing. After telling him how much of an ass he was, we turned around and walked out. We always wear our masks and don't need some jerk on a power trip while working the door at a bar addressing us that way. read more

Years ago, when I lived in Washington, DC, I lived a block away from the neighborhood bar called JR's. So, when I visited Dallas this weekend, I decided I had to check out how this JR's compared. And it totally delivered! Similar vibe, but much, much more spacious. And they served food! My drinking partner and I enjoyed our special cherry coke drinks with a side of fried zucchini. And the best part was, after 8 drinks and our zuchhini, the bill came out to less than $40! read more

The flagship bar for the Caven group. So successful they have opened a twin in Washington DC, expanded the Dallas location multiple times, and still they keep packing the boyz in. Named for the titular character from the "Dallas" TV-show (along with the lesbian sister bar a few doors down, Sue Ellen's), JR's has been the corner watering hole for gay Dallas for twenty-something years. Never a cover, it is one of the few places you can always find some size of crowd, seven nights a week. It's got a frat-house, Yale meets Abercrombie style decor, with lots of Ivy-league memorabilia on the walls. A major expansion in 1998 added a second level bar with a fantastic outdoor balcony that is opened up on nice days creating one huge fresh-air space. Great to escape the ever-present cigarette smoke. The only major negative is the 'tude. This is an s & m bar to the max (stand and model for you str8 folk out there). Conversations will usually involve some over-the-shoulder glances to make sure there isnt someone cuter behind you. The latest jeans, the new Marc Nason boots, all in abundant display. But the crowd is cute and collegiate, so they can get away with it. All-in-all, start your evening here with a nice drink after work, loosen up the mind, and then move on to another club for the main event of the evening. read more

I went to JR's for many years. Looking back, I'm amazed at how patient I've been, as the experienced has declined steadily and dramatically over that time. At this point, going there is a dreary experience, and they seem to take their customers for granted. I have way more fun hanging out at one of the many other locations nearby. Speaking of which, it's obvious their business has fallen off a cliff. The crowds are pretty thin, and seem to include a lot of really old guys who look pretty unhappy. Many other choices nearby, just do a search on your phone. Don't bother with this place, it's just bad vibes, attitude, and actually pretty depressing overall. A "has been" location. read more

This place has a prime location to people watch! My first experience to the gayborhood was here, and it is (and was) a great starting point to any fun and fancy filled adventure to this area. They wrap around upper deck is probably my favorite spot. Watching all the crazies walk by is entertaining in itself. I personally do not prefer the music they play, so that is also a plus of the deck vs. inside where the jams are pumping.(if you like lady gaga and mid 90s dance music this is your place, not gonna lie, i did get down to a lil janet jackson) As a single ((mostly))heterosexual female, the ability to go somewhere like JRs, have good conversation with no pressure or relentless dbags and frat boys barking up my tree is refreshing. JR's is awesome! I have been coming here for years and it's been great. The bartenders are sweethearts. Ask for Stu, Danny, John, Steven or Gary. They are both great! The cocktails are made strong and they're really cheap. The music and videos are great! But, if I was the DJ, I would play more current Dance Music. I use to be a DJ and I know how to throw a party. Well, the boys are cute, pretty and are nice to you! I have a huge network of friends here in Dallas, TX and they all recommend this bar for socializing. It is a stand up and model bar for sure. Everyone here is so friendly. Lunch is OK here if you are going to grab a quick bite to eat. The salads are great and so are the appetizers. They have a drag show on Monday nights. They also have a pool table upstairs. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights are the best time to go. Especially Happy Hour and Cruising The Crossroads on Friday's. The boys are friendly if you are the one out of town on business or just visiting. Many memories here at JR's. I would recommend this to anyone visiting and it's great when you have your clique of friends to meet and chat with the cute boys walking through. The balcony has an awesome view and a bar and you could go inside and sit in the lounge chairs with A/C if your hot. When it gets hot and humid you could go and walk around as well if you so incline. Walking distance if you stay in any of the hotels off of Oaklawn and a safe neighborhood. Close to restaurants and some of them stay open after a night of partying. JR's has this laid back attitude from the boys and a very nice staff. You will want to come again just like I have. I met my boyfriend here. read more

I'm not sure why it's so hard to find a bar that is open on Saturday around 2pm. Gah! : ) In comes JR's to the rescue this past Saturday. We wanted a couple of beers and arrived around 1:30ish. All my trips to the gayborhood seem to start here. With that said, it's a great starting point! Every time I have gone, people enjoying the bar and the bar staff have all been friendly! love it. Most of my time is normally spent up on the second floor, gazing over the balcony, people watching down below. It can get a little thick with smoke, but you're outside, so it's not unbearable. Drinks are well made, bartenders are fast, and beers are cold! There is a popcorn machine but I'm not sure that I trust it. Great place, definitely give it a go! read more

This place is not much of a bar and grill at all. It is more of a hip spot that people can go to hang out and lounge with cocktails and beers in hand. They have pretty nice and cool lighting upstairs. There are plenty of places to lounge but also to just stand around and chit chat with friends. They have a few pool tables downstairs and they have a nice outside patio upstairs also. It's a really cool vibe here and fun to people watch. read more

I've always been a big fan of Jrs. I used to frequent the Houston location when I lived there and now that I live in Dallas, this location is my "go-to". When I used to travel for work a few years ago, I would make an attempt to stop in for a drink if there was a Jrs in the city. They are in major cities across the US. This location was recently remodeled about two years ago per the date on this review. It's two stories with a beautiful upstairs patio. It's laced in gorgeous white trim and has a wrap-a-round patio on the top. It's the same bartenders that have been working there for years. But that just means they love where they work and the owner takes care of them. They are all very friendly for the most part and serve up drinks quick. If you happen to find yourself in this bar, find Michael and have him make you a drink. He's the best. Tell him David sent you. :) read more

While the downstairs of the bar is always a bit dark/dirty for my taste (and the bathroom with no stall door is really unacceptable), I must admit that JR's is one of my favorite bars on the Oak Lawn strip. AT JR's, you can find a few people hanging out no matter how early or late you arrive. It's great to get a drink after dinner and not be the only person there, which is typical at many other bars. I've had luck with very friendly bartenders on most occasions and the boys who collect empty drinks are polite. Most drinks are very reasonably priced. What makes JR's better than most bars is the outdoor patio that overlooks Cedar Springs. It's a great spot to people watch and enjoy nice weather. read more

This place has racist tendencies. JR's does not welcome, nor encourage blacks patronage. I was asked to pay for my drinks upfront, which is rude. I was informed about a two drink minimum policy, which is presumptuous. A two drink minimum policy at most bars is reserved for loiterers (prostitutes and hustlers). A bartender took my drink order without even looking at me. He he served them plastic cups (very classy) and silently walked off ...frosty bad service. To avoid getting my friends upset, I delayed telling them about what had transpired. We drove 4hrs to be reluctantly served. read more

When I lived in Dallas JR's was actually called JR's Bar and Grill not sure if there has been a name change. The Bar and Grill part has led to many funny stories among my Gay friends and their families (as in parents) wanting to visit the Bar and Grill that their Son often talks about when they visit... The decor is old fashioned wood beams with lots of cute boys in leather. My favorite nights to go were when they had the Drag Shows. Many happy memories here. By far my favourite bar in Dallas! The drinks are cheap (compared to my $8 beers in New York City), the bartenders and patrons are friendly, and the roof bar is to-die-for. The only thing that scared me about JR's is how the people lined up at the register to order their drinks. Come to think of it, most people did that in *every* bar I went to in Dallas. I like JR's for the drinks, the general look of the bar, and the sometimes adorable go go dancers. The vibe is not so loud or dance-y here, which can be nice if you actually want to talk to whoever you're hanging out with. I haven't been since it was renovated, but am definitely interested in seeing it. Especially if there is more room on the second floor now! In the past, we've been lucky to get a window seat to do a little people watching on the first floor. Word to the wise - have your gay order the drinks. Even the cutest of girls have trouble getting the attention of bartenders here. read more

I have been to JR's a couple of times and have anchored down in the upper level due to fine ass weather and the fresh air. Oh, and the view of the craziness going on in the street is dynamite. The drinks are strong and they are very reasonably priced. The fun sass from the bartender is free (dont forget to tip) and the music is superb. Fun dancey-but-chill place to gather with friends. Enjoy the friendliness of the staff and fellow patrons. One minus that I need to point out is that the women's bathroom upstairs does not have a lock on it. Hey gays, I understand that things can get wild around here and rooms need to be, ahem, accessible. But let a sister take a piss with peace of mind! Definitely one of the best bars in the gayberhood. Great local bar, relaxing atmosphere, friendly bartenders, great drink specials, big patio, and great music. Sunday fundays are a lot of fun, especially with nice weather. There are drag shows on Mondays and various events throughout the week happy hour is fun, there are pool tables, free popcorn, tables to chat and have a drink with friends, and an outdoor smoking section if you smoke. Cruising the crossroads on Friday and Saturday offers drink specials which are really cheap. It's a chill and relaxing bar that I recommend and visit with friends. Affectionately called the S&M bar aka Stand and Model.. It's my hangout. I was just there yesterday afternoon on the patio. The sun was hitting the treetops while conversation flowed. Friends came and went and my day relaxed (with the help of a couple strong drinks of course) JR's has many faces. Yes it is a grill and the make a darn good chicken ceaser. It's a friendly hangout on a sunday afternoon or maybe a random thursday. It can be overtaken by "outsiders" aka people who only visit on Saturday and holidays. CHAOS! Us locals will usually camp out in the corner and take in the debauchery. It can be a drag show with multi and complex talented reining miss so and so. Last but not least, it can be a quiet place on a Monday evening to just catch up with your best friend. You absolutely need to get a drink from Candace when you go. How will you know Candace? Message to Caven: I've been going to the Panda for my birthday for over 20 years. Not Jr's. It was bad enough when we lost the Crossroads bookstore. Do we really have to lose anything else in the name of money and profit? Our gay community is already being pushed out of the neighborhood by the housing crisis! Our area has been filled up with straight couples with money and the minority of the gay people with money. some things just aren't as important as money and our community needs to understand that and get on board! read more

I make it a point to go to lunch at least once a week and catch up on the latest gossip with Stu the bartender. The food prices are fair for the amount you get, and if you're feeling especially cheap, Danny makes half-orders as well. They do trivia on Wednesdays with cash prizes, and there's always drink specials- especially on Sunday Funday. read more

Mixed bag of reviews. We were in down this weekend, Thurs-Mon, and this was one of the first bars we checked out. We got there early on Thursday (maybe around 6 or 7). After sitting at the bar talking with a friend, we TRIED to make conversation with 2 separate bartenders about what there was to do in the area/what were the must sees. Neither bar tender had much to say other then "yup" and "nope". Thanks Mr. Personality. At the time, there were signs on the doors notifying people of a filming that was taking place inside. Not wanting to bother the enthusiastic bartenders, we asked the bar back what they were filming to which he replied "a documentary" then walked away. We did come back at night and there was a different team of bartenders working. These guys were more social but didn't really care that there were a lot of people waiting for drinks: they continued to serve at the same speed. The place is huge, with something to do for just about everybody. There were pool tables, a smoking lounge, and a patio upstairs. Worth checking out, but probably not where you will want to spend your entire day. read more

Interesting place. Nice upstairs outdoor patio and they do get props for the no smoking lounge on the upper patio level. Crowd circulation can be horrible on the weekends and I'm really over the stand and model kind of crowd. The crowd there on the weekend didn't seem overly friendly to people "outside their clique" - something not unique to JRs but to most gay bars in general. Staff was generally OK in the few interactions I had with them. Music was tolerable, if typical gay fare. Look, I think I'm more cut out for the country western bar down the street where the men were 100 times better looking, 100 times more masculine and at least 100 times more friendly, but that's just me. The bar is okay, not really my favorite. I've only gone of my own free will two or three because no matter who I go with, or what bartender I go to, I always seem to get over-charged for drinks. I don't know if I just look like the type of guy who doesn't tip well, or what. This is my current favorite hangout. The staff is very friendly and and the drink prices are reasonable. I've been coming here for a few years now, and there are plenty of nice regulars that congregate. This is a good place to have a couple of drinks, chat with or make friends, and listen to music. They mostly play stuff from today. However, they do sometimes play older stuff, usually during off-peak times. All in all, one of the good bars in Oak Lawn. read more
