My wife and I recently had an approved application to adopt. We had inquired about a dog that was available for adoption. Contacting the foster family was extremely difficult. My wife finally got ahold of the volunteer family after several attempts and we set up a meet and greet with our pups at our home. They said she was from a breeding situation and had some difficulty when people touch her head, but she was a loving dog. When they arrived at our home the two volunteers didn't seem to want us to touch her. The younger of the two was interacting with the dog, but they kept her on a short leash and away from us as much as possible. As of they didn't want us to interact with her or wanted us to adopt her based on sight alone. When the dog did come up to us she was very loving and would like our face and try to sit in our laps, but they kept her on a short leash and away from us as much as possible. That is also when the history of the dog changed. That she jumps fences, darts to the road when walked and is selective about other dogs. Going to far to say that she attacks her own dogs and would kill cats. When our dogs did come out to meet, the volunteer kept a tight leash and after less than a minute she said her dog was going to attack ours and jerked the leash. Which I did not see, but they had only been in contact for 20 seconds. As reference, I have 5 years experience working and training volunteers as a volunteer manager in a shelter setting on how to conduct meet and greets, education on animal behavior and have conducted numerous meet and greets between adoptable dogs and potential adopters. This includes positive reinforcement training for shelter animals in order to find them forever homes easier. However, in my experience, I feel this was either a case of not wanting to adopt the dog, as they shared their desires to adopt her or poorly trained volunteer staff. As if they were looking for any excuse not to adopt to us, and quickly dismissed any further interaction. They then tried to push us towards another dog they have available on their website that has a known human bite history. They also mentioned other dogs on their website that are currently available for adoption that were "mean". I thought the pup we met was a very sweet girl from what limited interaction the volunteers allowed us, but I feel their mind was made up from the word hello. Then being pushed to other dogs with serious aggression issues made me very wary of wanting to adopt from their organization. read more

We adopted our dog from JRs last year.. What they do for dogs is amazing.. so many volunteers working for them, from the people who drive down to Alabama to pick up vanloads of needy dogs, to dog walkers, to event people, to the foster families.. so many pieces of the puzzle. Yes, the approval process can take awhile (they get busy and they're volunteer based), and yes their prices seem high (again, this isn't like the Humane Society or MADACC where they get tons of donations and funding, they are foster based, which means there's a LOT of money that goes into rehabilitating each dog, many of them being southern dogs with heartworm and mange).. $450 per dog IS more than WHS but again, the funding comes from the adoption fees. Some of the dogs stay in foster for over 6 months.. Food, bedding, shots, staying, neutering/spaying.. It ain't free! I commend JRs for the work they do and would adopt through them again. read more

If it wasn't for this fantastic organization I wouldn't have met by best buddy Griffin. I was a bit nervous about going through a company that has to interview you, and learn my whole life story before I could adopt, but I get it and it went by much quicker than I expected. I didn't interact much with Jr's outside of the initial interview. The real winner in this company is Lorrie. She takes care of many of the dogs before they get fostered out and is the most wonderful individual I have met. She is so very accommodating, and kind and has a passion for what she does. She would do such an amazing job of keeping me in the loop during the process and would let me come look at dogs almost anytime I wanted. She loved on my little guy as if he was her own and for that I am extremely grateful. I know that this company drove all the way to Missouri to save my little guy from a kill shelter and for that I ill always be very grateful. They also made sure he had many of his shots and vaccinations, micro-chip, and neutered and documented it well. I went through JR's for both of my dogs and had great experiences. So much so that now I volunteer to walk dogs on weekends for them. Our first guy was a puppy when we adopted him in 2013. I filled out the online application and after about two weeks we had a home visit from a volunteer. She questioned us on everything to make sure we were ready for a dog, as neither of us had a dog of our own after leaving home. But, we had many other pets that were well vetted and taken care of and we had been looking for the right dog for years. The adoption process went smoothly after visiting the pup at a foster home. We were again questioned as we interacted with the little guy and ultimately the foster felt we would be a good match for the furball. At no point during all the questions were we made to feel uncomfortable or turned off at the prospect of adopting. JR's was the first shelter to give us a chance. No breeder or humane society would even consider us or return my calls because we didn't have a fenced in yard at the time. Because of JR's, we now had a brilliant pup who was already fixed, crate trained, mostly house-trained, had first rounds of shots, flea/worm protection and was microchipped. That's quite a bargain at the $450 adoption fee. Plus, we received $50 back after completing puppy classes. Did everything take place in the matter of a week? Nope. But the wait was worth it. Because of Darwin, my mom, cousin, and friend all took a chance on rescue dogs that are now beloved family members. The second pup we adopted in 2017. I filled out paperwork, had a few phone conversations, submitted all of our animal records - basically the same process, just slightly different from before. It was also a little more expedient this time around. Because we already had Darwin, the home visits were different. We had to consider a puppy that he would get along with. Because of this, we didn't get the puppies we were originally looking at. Darwin wanted to play with them and they wanted to do their own thing. The third guy wanted to play and got along with Darwin so it seemed like a perfect match. We met him three different times before bringing him home. This new pup, Wicket, had all the benefits as before - shots, fixed, etc etc. Wicket is very smart and just turned one year old. He still has some behavior issues that we are working out, but I think it's still puppy-hood related and with training we are working through it. No dog is ever perfect right from the start. And, with the proper training, any dog can become a great family member if you are all willing to take the time to deal with it. I have heard people claim that some of the rules seem outlandish, but it is in the best interest of the dog and prospective family that certain measures are taken to make sure that the dog you want to adopt is the best dog for you. If you are serious about adopting, give JR's a chance. All of the volunteers and foster families care a great deal for the dogs that come into the rescue. I love to see the dogs I work with go home to loving families. I can't find the words to express my love & gratitude for JR's. My boyfriend & I moved to Wisconsin & knew our home would not be complete until we had a dog in our lives. We searched everywhere, I mean EVERYWHERE for the perfect animal. We live in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, a 4.5 hour drive from JR's, but we wanted the perfect addition to our family. So when I came across JR's I saw our Luna (aka Faith) and we just melted. From there, I became pretty determined to meet her. The entire process was smooth & efficient. Our home visit went well (had to FaceTime since we were so far, but they accommodated us) and the fosters of Luna were very responsive. The foster parents were kind enough to let us drive down on EASTER to meet her! They took the time on a Sunday family holiday to allow us to have a meet & greet with Luna. It's safe to say we fell in love instantly & knew she was meant for us, but there were other families involved. In the end, the foster family chose us & I am forever grateful. When we took Luna to her first vet visit, they were SHOCKED at how well vaccinated she was. She had been spayed, up to date on all shots & was given the clean bill of health. At the time of adoption, her foster parents told us about some itchy spots she had & JR's paid for the first 2 months of medication. I couldn't imagine getting my fur baby from anyone one else. JRs is an absolutely fabulous organization, that I would highly recommend to anyone looking to adopt a dog in need of a home. Upon completing our application, we got an immediate reply that a volunteer home visitor would be calling to schedule a visit. The volunteer called us shortly thereafter, and the meeting took place at a time convenient to us both. While we wanted to schedule some dog visits immediately, we were told we needed to wait until our entire family was able to do so. This is because JRs wants to be absolutely sure that everyone in the household is on board and that the foster can properly evaluate how good a match you are for the dog. The foster families got back to us promptly to schedule visits. JRs also contacted us to tell us one foster did not think we would be a good match for one of the dogs we wanted to visit. I really appreciated this, as it not only saved us a trip, but showed how concerned they are about getting the right dog to the right home. After several visits and a lot of miles, we found our perfect pup. The foster mom Michelle was fantastic, and I really appreciate all the care she gave to our puppy. When we were approved and went to get Coco, she went through Coco's health history, explained the medications she was currently receiving, and told us very clearly that certain health issues couldn't be tested for at her age. We have since taken her to our own vet, and all is well. I think that many of the negative reviews here are more about misunderstanding of what our job as adopters is, and what JRs job is. We need to research what type of dog is most appropriate for our lifestyle and circumstances. If you are not going to be around most of the day, maybe an older dog rather than a puppy is the right choice for you. We need to understand that JRs is not there to guarantee a dog's perfect health at all points in the future. Their job is to rescue and care for unwanted, neglected dogs (and the occasional kitty), and help find them a forever home. This is a job that they do admirably. Instead, we were met with the coldest responses and the least interest in working with us that we'd encountered from any of the other rescues that we'd also spoken to. I actually couldn't even believe it. It was as if we were a nuisance, and unimportant. And frankly, each interaction was weird. I'm not sure what the deal was, but this was obviously surprising and a little questionable given how much they emphasize that finding their rescues a good home are their priority. Ridiculously expensive and so hard to get ahold of. When I contacted them asking about a dog, they were very rude and short. The numbers for them were all to their insurance company, so it was nearly impossible to get ahold of them. It's such a shame that they are an adoption agency yet they are charging such high prices for their dogs that they call "donations". I would have gladly adopted a dog if they all weren't so expensive. The local shelters take so much better care of their dogs and are a third of the price. This is just shameful. Oh and the reason you'll see such positive reviews on their Facebook page is because they block people who leave negative comments. read more

About a year and 8 months ago we rescued Sadie (I forget her former name). She was 1.5 when we got her and made herself right at home. You could literally see the joy and happiness on her face knowing she found her forever family. We took her to lots of training and continue to practice training at home with her to this day. She has her quirks. Doesn't like the mail man and sometimes goes nuts when people walk by the house but she is such a good dog. She is a 65 pound Rottweiler mix that thinks she is a 15 pound lap dog. She loves to play, loves to cuddle, loves training and pleasing people and she even gives hugs. Rescuing a dog is hard work. You don't know what the dogs previous life was like, but when you rescue a dog you commit to giving them the best life go forward. It is work on the owners part. Don't expect to get a perfectly well behaved pet from anywhere. You will endure unexpected medical costs, accidents in the house, the occassional destroyed shoe, barking, etc. Dogs need direction and guidance. If you're not willing to put the work in to training and actually learning about a dog's behavior and what effective training is then do not become a pet owner. JR's was great to deal with and they put a lot of time and effort into matching dogs with the appropriate family. They are volunteers and I thank them for all they do because without them we never would have found our girl. read more

I have not had a remotely similar experience to the other reviewers here. The communication was excellent from everyone at JR's Pups n Stuff. From the time I put in my app to the day our new furry family member came home was a little less than 2 weeks in total. I wonder if some of the people who haven't heard anything back weren't what this rescue looks for in a forever home?? Please read their website - this rescue is made up of a foster home network, it is NOT a standalone 'shelter'. Why does anyone need to hear from the 'head' of the organization? What does that have to do with anything? The foster is the one who has and knows your potential dog, who you will have to work with to schedule a visit, not the 'head' of the organization. You will hear from one of the volunteers IF your application is good, i.e. you want a dog for companionship, you aren't gone 12 hours a day, you would not surrender a dog for any reason short of the extreme, etc.. You will get a home visit scheduled IF your application is good and your vet and landlord (if applicable) give good references. IF your home visit goes well, then you will work with the specific foster parent of the dog you are interested in. I for one think this strict process makes sense, as these dogs have been through enough, they need FOREVER homes with people who are serious about owning a dog for life, and not to just be returned again. JR's took in about 40 more dogs this weekend, they are busy driving back and forth to the south to rescue dogs, get them vetted and put them in safe fosters. THAT is what they are 'more concerned with'. I found the adoption fee totally worth it #1 for a GREAT and probably purebred dog and #2 I understand her care and the care of other rescue dogs is not free. Go follow their Facebook page if you want to see how responsive they are and how truly committed they are to saving dogs, no need to take my word for it. read more

I will agree with just about everything the other reviews have said. We love our doggie to pieces, but were really surprised at how little we heard from the heads of the organization. All communication had to be sent through the foster family. I volunteer with an animal rescue group myself and was really surprised at how poor the communication was. We never heard from the head of the rescue at any point during the process (we have had him over a month now). The ONLY reason for the three stars is because of how great our dog's foster family was. His foster dad was always quick to answer a question and was always very open and honest about the doggie. It was clear they took wonderful care of our dog. He unfortunately had to be the middle man for all of the communication between myself and the head of the org, which didn't seem fair. A month in and our check still hasn't been cashed and we haven't received any of his paperwork yet (rabies tag, etc).. Seems they need to work on organization and communication....but, we got an amazing dog and we are thankful for that. read more

My husband and I attempted to adopt a puppy for family, which includes our 5 year old daughter. We have had dogs our entire lives, she has been around them since she was born. The puppy was approximately one month old. Upon filling out the application, we promptly receive a response email that they do not let families with children less then age 8 adopt puppies. Confused and upset, my husband shot them an email back wondering why. We never received any rationale as to why the age was 8. We asked that they reconsider, as our home and family is perfect for a puppy. I am very disappointed. I think it is ridiculous to deny a family a pet based on some inaccurate and unfounded rule. read more

They invest the time and the trouble to do home visits, meet the potential adopters to make sure that their pups and cats are going to be successful in their new surroundings. I adopted a puppy in January from them. I had 0 problems. I sent in my application and heard back within a few days to schedule a home visit. The original dog I wanted I wasn't able to get but that was due to my landlord not getting back to the organization (so I had not been approved in time) and by then he was adopted. I eventually was approved and I got the other puppy I was very interested in. In fact I still keep in touch with the foster family. You can tell the volunteers are doing this out of love. No one is getting paid and they are doing this in their spare time. I would recommend JRs to anyone. I have adopted from shelters and I feel this is much better. They know the dogs, they live with their families and they care more about the animals then just emptying kennel space. read more

Please don't let the bad reviews discourage you! We had a great experience with JRs. A lot of people don't realize the time and dedication that goes along with adopting a rescue dog. I am so thankful for all the work the volunteers at JRs put in to help these animals get a second chance. My advice is to be patient and realize that good things take time! This was our first dog and everything went seamlessly! We knew he needed training, what his personality was like and what vet care was already taken care. Adopting an animal as a new family member is an exciting, but also very emotional and sometimes stressful experience. Just like having a human baby, there is a great deal of anticipation, expectation, and dreams about what a perfect pet and perfect adoption experience will be. Now, let's get to reality -- adopting a pet is not easy, and the process is time consuming and difficult, but in the end, it's worth the effort. We adopted an adult dog from JR Pups and Stuff, and while it took a lot of time and energy, in the end, it was absolutely wonderful. If you are certain that your family is ready to commit to adopting an animal family member, then I absolutely recommend that you check out JR's Pups and Stuff. JR's has specific rules for adoptions and a clear process. First, you fill out and submit a written application. The agency will check with your veterinarian and if applicable, your landlord. Our application got stuck during this process, as our indoor cat had not been to the vet recently. So after waiting a while, I called and emailed JRs to see how things were going and was told that it was the vet check that had stalled the process. I contacted our vet, got our cat up-to-date and then we were approved for a home visit. I was *nervous* about our home visit, but it was fine. We met with Terri, a wonderful volunteer, who reviewed a lot of information about dogs and adoptions. I was concerned that JR's might be picky about our (fairly average) home or (unfenced) yard and I really shouldn't have worried at all, they were very nice, easy to work with and reassuring. Next, we received an email that our application was approved. I sent in an email requesting to meet several dogs, maybe 5 or 6. This was a little odd for us, but I only head back from one foster about one of the dogs. So we visited, and... as it turns out we only needed to meet that dog. :) She is now, my dog! But, I am not sure why I did not hear back on the other dogs -- perhaps the volunteers were busy or other applicants were ahead of us. So, just be aware that patience and persistence are required during the entire adoption process. If we had really wanted to meet additional dogs, I feel like I may have needed to be proactive about making those requests and following-up to get the meetings set up. Once you are approved, don't be shy about connecting with JR's to request meetings, but be patient while the volunteers are working on scheduling with you. We ended up finding our dog quickly after approval, but... it might be a better strategy to get approved as an adopter, and then take your time with the meet and greets and wait to see the new dogs coming in for adoption. JR's will get groups of new animals at a time, and if you are looking for a certain breed or personality, it might benefit you to wait for an animal that really fits your family's adoption criteria and needs. Do set your criteria! We wanted an adult dog, already potty trained, and with very good indoor manners, that was not aggressive to cats, and our dog truly fits that description. Note that JR's breed descriptions are typically just guesses. JRs has an extensive network of fostering volunteers, who really get to observe the dogs within a home environment and see their strengths and weaknesses. Some dogs will even benefit from some training while in foster care. The foster volunteers ultimately decide who may adopt the dog, and it is their responsibility to determine if the animal and the family are a great long-term match. Our dog's foster was extremely careful and met us three times to ensure that we were the right fit. Everyone at JRs wants successful adoptions, not returns (which are heartbreaking for everybody). Let's talk about the adjustment period after adoption -- it was not easy! Our family had never owned a dog before, and so having a new creature in the house was exciting but stressful. We enrolled her in training at Think Pawsitive (excellent - I will review them soon) and I can see why the first few months with a new dog are so hard. A huge life change. It is important to understand this going in so that you are ready to commit to the animal and work through challenges and new routines as you bond with your new family member. It will be difficult and requires patience. Our dog's foster was supportive and helped us with questions during this time. We also found training very valuable. Over time we learned how to be good dog owners, and our dog learned to be part of our family. This is long -- but I hope it helps you if you consider adopting a rescue animal. Adopted our adult Saint Bernard in December 2014. Couldn't have been happier with the process! After countless trips to our local Humane Societies (we are in the southwest suburbs of Chicago) and many broken hearts we finally found JRs. Yes, it was a hike but it was well worth it. JRs is foster based which is a huge advantage as there dogs live in foster homes. The foster parents know the dogs well and know what family situation will work best. The fosters also start training the pups. I have children and at the time had another dog - so we had a complicated situation and needed to ensure a good match for both us and our new dog. A foster based rescue was definitely the best route to go for our complicated situation. If anyone is like me, when you get the idea in your head that you are adopting a dog, you want to do it immediately. Unfortunately though to do it right you need some patience - which I know many do not have. There is a home visit with JRs that admittedly I did not appreciate until after going through the entire adoption process. The home visit is used as an opportunity for JRs to get to know you and your home and also educate you on integrating a new dog. It's necessary, let the process play out and ultimately JRs will find you the right dog even if it's not the dog that you originally set your sights on. JRs gets dogs frequently and a wide variety. I highly recommend JRs and am forever thankful for our gentle giant. read more

We were unable to keep the dog, due to unforeseen reasons and we returned her less than a week after taking her home. JR's refused to give a refund. PayPal refunded the money. I wouldn't have expected a refund had it been a month later or so, but it was literally less than a week. Edit: I am FULLY aware of what it takes to raise and give a dog a home; as we already have 1. Sadly as I said due to unforeseen reasons we were not able to keep the pup from JR's. Our employment situation changed AFTER we took her home. This was NOT something we could predict. I love how all the "positive" reviews are shaming some of us who had situations BEYOND our control happen. Assuming and saying that ppl don't deserve a dog if it doesn't work out is just as bad. Those ppl stating things of that nature are NO BETTER! Get off your high and mighty horses. Sometimes rescue just isn't got everyone and that's okay too. The communication with JR's is a joke and if they took things seriously they'd see that is everyone's biggest complaint. read more

I truly cannot say enough about JRs. My husband and I began the application for adoption back in July, but realized that it was not great timing and JRs kept our app on file until October when when someone posted a photo of our sweet girl looking for her forever home. We were so worried she would get taken before we could have the home visit that we practically stalked the poor volunteers, who expedited the process for us, agreeing to come to our home late on a Friday evening and phoning the volunteer who had our puppy in her home that night to see if we could visit the following morning. How amazing is that?!?!? All thanks to those sweet volunteers, we adopted our baby December (Ember) the very next day. Further, I just have to comment on the exceptional care given to our girl (then Firestar) before we adopted her. I don't think an animal could have been more loved than she was by her foster mom, Cathy. I know I'm a sap, but it nearly brings me to tears, I'm so grateful. Ember came home crate trained and pretty much completely potty trained. I swear she was taught manners, because she greeted every person and animal with a sweet sniff and wagging tail. She even gave our kitties their space. She stuck close to us and played so well with other dogs. Of course every dog has their way and their own personality, but so much of this is molded by the foster family, and we couldn't be more grateful for Cathy! To this day, I message her any time I have a question about anything Ember related, and of course just to check in. The issue I have is mainly with some of the workers not so much with the organization itself. While searching for our next rescue I came across JR. I went through the whole application and home visitation process and passed with flying colors. The lady we had come to our home was wonderful and very informative. The issue I had was with the dog search itself. In the descriptions of the dogs nowhere did it state where one was special needs, So there were times that I wasted my time and the fosters time to find out that the dog had a special needs that I unfortunately would not be able to accommodate. let me add this was a year ago so this might have change. When we finally found a dog we went to the main wharehouse. The lady that took care of us mentioned at the end of our visit how my dog's anal glands were swollen. Mind you I've had my dog since she was a puppy so I pretty much know her very well, I informed the lady that her butthole that she was staring at has always looked like that and there's nothing wrong with it. I'd also like to add that I've done volunteer work with rescues in the past and I've seen swollen anagrams. I took the dog to the vet anyways because the lady insisted that I was wrong, which I could have been. But my vet laughed and said my dog's anagrams were fine, and the lady had no idea what she was taking about. During our visit there was a dog we liked named Abra, however she didn't get along with my dog. we were told that Abra had a brother named Kadabra and we set up a time to meet the brother. While we met the brother who was even more aggressive with my dog the Foster person even told us that she was told that Kadabra was more aggressive than Abra towards other dogs. In fact Kadabra attacked his own brother and that's why they were separated. If you know this information why would you suggest that we waste our time to go see another dog that wasn't going to work? This of course I do not blame on the foster parent. The worker that suggested should have known while she was making me feel like a bad mother for my dog supposed swollen anal gland. After that experience I went to a different rescue. read more

JR's rescued a matted, overgrown dog from the side of the road in Anniston, AL. He was nervous, but he let someone get close enough to catch him finally. He was so sweet that they didn't bring him to the shelter that night. He stayed with the rescuer and was driven up to Wisconsin to find his forever home. He had to be neutered, so there was a minimum two week wait. We met him, "Tommy Tutone" as soon as we could after his surgery, and I KNEW he was our forever family member. He was well loved by his foster mom, Ashley, and the JR's volunteers helped us every step of the way as my husband and I adopted our first dog together. Now named Walter, this little guy lights up my life every day. He plays, and snuggles and gives kisses. He's overexcited, and rambunctious, but he's a master bedhog, too. After losing our dog of 12 years, and listening to our young kids beg for a new pup for about 2 yrs, we finally decided to find a rescue dog to be part of our family. We had him for 11 months before making the very difficult decision to surrender him to JR's. Within 6 weeks of having him in our home we had over $1,200 in medical bills, most of which were not covered by the pet insurance. We had him in to the vet several times for skin conditions/allergies, kennel cough, etc. We put him on a beef and chicken free diet, as the determined as a food allergy. We built a retaining wall, poured concrete, and put in a fence around our backyard. He went to doggy daycare 1 day a week and was walked by a service the other 4 days. We walked and jogged with him. We did an extended training course with him. I state all this NOT to indicate these were the issues for why we gave him back, but to demonstrate that we were prepared for and willing to deal with the costs of having a dog. We had committed to that. But we had not committed to housing an animal that would pose a threat to our safety. Early on we chalked up his "nipping" as puppy behavior and that we would continue to work with him and train him out of it. But my son got to the point it made him nervous to walk him (which defeated part of the purpose of having a dog). We couldn't go on family walks because he'd go after my daughter if she was on her bike (and she was too little to keep up on foot). We'd have to put him in our bathroom when company came over because he was so aggressive. I was nervous leaving him there with a babysitter. Numerous friends who have had experience with dogs all their lives, and my own mother who has always taken in strays, have all commented that he made them nervous. After he bit my 9 yr old niece early this year and then a weekend in April where he went after our friend's daughter and bit her upper thigh (this was no "nip" - she'll scar), and then went for my daughter the next night on her bike, we finally made the difficult decision to surrender him. The contract read that JR's had up to 10 days to find a foster once we turned in our surrender paperwork. My husband continued to follow up and kept being put off beyond the 10 days. We kept being told they were working with the director and they had had a couple of "big intakes". Finally after enough pushing, we were told to bring him in to the rescue's office on that coming Monday. When I showed up, there were two people at desks, neither of which seemed to acknowledge my presence, even after me saying "hello?" The place was overwrought with files, papers, blankets and pets in crates. A 3rd person was on the phone in the hallway and when she got off the call I was able to "corner" her. When I explained what I was doing there she indicated I needed to talk to Don (the man whose back was to me, still not acknowledging me). Finally after turning around he told me the woman my husband had been working with quit and gave him only 2 hrs notice. I can say that after dealing with Don I can't blame her. He rolled his eyes at me when I explained the reason for returning the dog, and insinuated that I was lying. He indicated he had no idea what I was referring to as far as being aware of our surrender. He asked if we turned in our paperwork. Here I was distraught over giving up the dog and being given the 3rd degree by this man who supposedly has a huge heart to run this rescue. In hindsight, it is clear that this lady probably knew she'd be quitting, and knew the Rescue couldn't ignore us if we just showed up. It is clear the agency office isn't set up to accept visits from adopting families. The foster was kind to reach out to me directly but seemed to want to chalk his behavior up to "herding behavior". I grew up around dogs.Our last dog was a Shepherd/Collie mix (also herding breeds) and never have I had concerns about the safety of our kids, neighbors and family. When the foster had initially gone to pick him up she stated "when we went to get him he was not doing well. He's been aggressive towards everyone and other dogs." Today, I see that they have reposted his profile on their site under the "all adoptables" and have not updated his profile. It still reads "...is also kid friendly" dated May of 2016. Based on previous communication, I'm sure JR's will defend that as "we're all volunteers... and "we can't keep up..." but I would argue its a convenient way of being misleading. If you had time to repost, you had time to update the listing. I can appreciate the time and effort the volunteers and fosters put into finding these dogs their forever homes, but my fear is that the motivation to "flip" dogs is greater than doing the right thing. JR's brags on its website about how many placements they have, but I'm not so certain that is a good measurement of success after thinking about my own experience or some of the other reviews (see the 50+ unfiltered "not recommended" reviews). read more

I volunteered here, so I have gotten to experience this place firsthand. Firstly, the dogs are kept in less-than-ideal conditions. Their location--a warehouse. The dogs that are friendly and calm get kept on concrete floors with fencing giving them a small pen, no matter their size. The dogs that don't get along with other dogs, are contagious, or are very hyper get kept in an office, in crates that are covered my blankets with the lights off. And even though they are fit to bursting with animals, they are still taking in more. Secondly, they don't perform house checks for cats. The cats could be going to horrible people who lied on their forms, but nobody will ever know. The cats are not awarded the same rights as the dogs, although thankfully they are smart enough to keep them in a second, albeit stuffy and smelly, room. Lastly, the staff is rude and unwilling to explain things to volunteers. They do not explain how to check forms, and they were incredibly rude to a woman I know who tried to return a dog. She had paid hundreds of dollars for the dog to start being violent toward her small children, but JR's told her she had to keep the dog for a few days, was very rude when she went to return the dog, didn't give her back her money, and then put the dog back up for adoption, leading me to the nasty conclusion that they care more about money than their dogs or their clients. Sadly, the dogs do need a home. You'd be brave to adopt from here. read more

I have adopted from this rescue and found the people I worked very pleasant and professional. Yes they do have set rules that they want you to follow. Yes they have a no refund policy but guess what do do most rescues. I have and will continue to recommend them and I know when it's time to add a new fur baby to my family I will be coming back to JRs to help me find just the right one. I am grateful for the work that this organization does to save the lives of so many deserving dogs and cats.

The group's mission is incredible, the experience was poor. We submitted an application and went to an event several days later where we were told expect a home visit any day. Over two weeks later we had heard nothing so we sent an email......several days later a form email telling us to expect our vet to be called within 2 days of the application, that never happened. Almost a week after the email we did get an email to schedule a visit. Almost no information on their website about the dogs they are fostering. A few parents did put up bio's which is essential when you want to consider a dog to join your family. Even basic information would be a great help. I understand a volunteer organization but nothing for weeks is not going to help the dogs find forever homes. I saw many examples of this type of activity on their own facebook page. People being told to prepare to hear from them within 48 hours and waiting weeks. It is clear they are trying to do too much instead of doing a smaller number of dogs and doing it right The dogs were great at the event and on-line. I suggest checking out Tailwaggers911, less dogs but much better care and information for the families read more

He was already crate trained, very well behaved and he even knew a couple commands. He is 8 months old now and we can't imagine life without him! The one star I am giving for the lovely person we met who did our home visit, and the first foster mom we met who was also pleasant and great to work with. For the rest of this organization and process it was truly a waste of time and horribly managed. I feel sorry for those pups that need homes and are left to people who get to pick and choose who they hand them over to based on their own bias opinion of your family, not even being the ones who did the home visit, checked all your vets and references and honestly may even not even have them in a better environment than what your family may, but because they get to call the final shots,they get to pick and choose based on what flavor of the day suits them? My family had recently lost our dog due to old age, and vs buying a puppy we decided on rescuing. Just to get someone to come out was a lengthy process, but they did come out. The lady who came out was great and made us feel really at ease about this whole process. The foster mom who had the puppy we wanted to adopt pretty much dangled her in our faces and made it seem as if we were good to go to only then have Jrs send out a email about how the puppy-who had no one in the list of families but ours (told to us by the fosters themselves) had chosen another family. I mean she even told us where to pay! And that once payment was made she would be taken offline! It was a pretty cruel thing to do specially to kids. We have 2 kids who emotionally were already hurt by the death of their dog, to then be let down by someones ill intentions. Me and my husband as grownups can just put our big boy/girl underpants on and move on, but the fact that they did that and our kids emotions are involved...and they are able to so unfairly and with no valid good explanation just be inconsiderate of our entires family emotions was infuriating to me. I even politely (despite how infuriated I felt inside) reached out to them asking for a phone call to talk about how I felt and what a horrible experience I had. By "them" I mean the person in charge or lead people of the rescue. I sent an email only to have NO ONE ever reach out to me. I was never rude, I never question the foster parent as to a why they did what they did, as I wanted to follow the protocol and not jeopardize my chances hoping a higher up could look into it? But honestly this whole process was a joke! This is not done nor taken seriously and clearly the "higher ups" do not exist. The way this rescue is ran left a bad taste in my mouth. Poor pups. So many willing people with safe good homes and they are at the mercy of some Bob Joe who determines based on exactly what?! Clearly not safety... nor ability to care nor provide for them. Its just sad.... I pray another family does not go through the same experience as we did! After that we jumped shipped and adopted with another rescue! read more

I'm biased because I volunteer there, but I volunteer there because I have adopted two pets from them, and I had a wonderful experience with both. They're caring people and they went the extra mile for me. I wanted a puppy that would get along with a reactive older dog and they brought several puppies over to my house so that I could test them and see how they interacted with my dog. I was able to pick the right pup. Thanks to them Zoe and later, Tillie, joined our household. read more
