Those days when we used to rely on travel agents to arrange our flights and/or hotels for our trips now has pivoted quite a bit with the growth of internet and having the airlines taking a great command of it all it does make things quite easy yet sometimes we do need help with several items especially when it's in a foreign country. JTB or more known as Japan Travel Bureau is a small office in Ala Moana Center Street Level all the way at the very end near Nordstrom side you'll notice the more prominent Olioli section which is the greeting desk for visitors just go right beside that is where you need to be. I've asked about wifi by calling and was told that reservation was done online and that I'm able to pick it up in store on date that you'd reserve but had a difficult time finding it all online only pick up in Japan which was discouraging for me as I'm going to multiple cities decided on just purchasing the Rail Pass. Rail Pass are very easy and are able to purchase up to 90 before you need to redeem for use I would suggest checking weekly as rates will reflect on yen rates so being patient and lucky would be in your favor as well. Ordering it online was a bit different from the other location that I usually go to but is a convenience if it's a method you'd refer. Once paid you get a email notice and ready for pick up anytime I found out that they do have wifi rental as well that you're able to pick up at the Honolulu Office but the staff here is very nice and fluent in both English and Japanese which was very helpful for both me and mom making it a cool place to get what you need. I have to say without a doubt that this company has been the absolute, most unprofessional travel agency. So many untruths, and mirepresentations. I have a graduating senior class that has fundraised and saved for years to just have one last meaningful trip to Japan together before they all attend different Universities thoughout the world. Thinking about traveling to Japan. I stopped by JTB to look at some of the offered tours. Today (11/9/23) the yen is at 151.2730! The sign said it opened at 9 a.m. I couldn't see anyone inside and it was past 9 a.m. I knocked on the door. To my surprise a lady came out from behind a closed area and opened the door. She was polite and informative. She wanted to know when I would like to travel and stated when it's the busiest times and slower times. After our talk she gave me pointers on which areas to visit and asked for my email so she could send me JTB information and special tours. The place was neat, well lit and provided a variety of handout flyers for all different tours, cruises and multiple locations to visit. JTB is located on the street level, Ala Moana Center, past Nijiya Market and before Spectrum store. Going to Japan? You can buy your JR Rail passes here (they are going to get more expensive very soon, FYI). The JR Rail passes are only available for foreigners to purchase prior to arriving in Japan. Once you get there, you still have to go to a JR office to exchange the voucher for your actual pass. Make SURE you go through a human check point at the airport that gives you a "temporary visitor" stamp in your passport upon arrival, or you won't be able to redeem the vouchers. (There are some automated immigration lines which are not manned.) You can also rent pocket wifi for use while in Japan. Make sure you reserve ahead of time. It was $6/day so depending on your cellular plan, this may not be the best option for you, but it was for us. The wifi was high speed and had no daily limit, and the wifi stayed charged all day. In the past I had rented from a different company and the wifi didn't last as long. They have some "Hawaii" logo items for purchase in this tiny store, but most of the people waiting in line when I went were waiting to get things for their Japan trip. read more

We recently went on a tour to Japan, arranged by JTB agent Kazuko Spear. As it was a tour group for my son's school, there were a bunch of moving parts. For months, we had meetings at the school, going over everything from passport acquisition, Japan entry information, city overviews, hotels and transportation. Kazuko was on top of it all. She accommodated all my additional requests prior to departure. The trip itself was amazing. The ability to give my son a guided bird's eye tour was priceless. I've been to Japan numerous times before but being my son's first time, it was great having an English speaking guide, pointing out things we wouldn't have known otherwise. We had a tour guide in each city. Guided tours and activities for each day. Miles and miles of walking, trains and busses. Daily adventures. The only thing I wish is that we had more time to stay in Japan and free days in between all the tours. But since it was a spring break trip for the school, everything was packed into 10days. A truly adventure, fun filled 10 days. I was afraid that our timeline was a little soon for cherry blossoms but thankfully we were there for the first week of the season. Unfortunately my son fell ill the very last day and I had difficulties extending our room with the front desk. I called Kazuko all the way in Hawaii and within minutes, she made arrangements for us to stay till our departure to the airport. She was so sweet. Having an illness in a foreign country was disconcerting but she reassured me that we would be able to safely navigate home. She even called from home to check on my son. I know if I were ever to use a tour group again, I wouldn't hesitate calling Kazuko. It was such a fabulous experience from start to finish and all her assistance was above and beyond expectations. read more

Just got rail pass, current exchange around ¥145/$1. However JTB USA seems to charge 1usd/136jpy. They may not charge a fee but may use a different standard for rate exchange. Orders are made on line, please insure name on voucher for rail pass matches EXACTLY as on passport including middle name. I guess if you're not purchasing in Japan it's more restrictive. (Since I've purchased many various types of passes there.) I wish there were more authorized sellers readily available in the US to purchase rail passes. Used JTB USA at Ala Moana twice: both times to purchase a JR Rail Pass Japan (cheaper than other places by like $3.00) and it's handy in the event that you make your way back from Waikiki picking up your yen from the money exchange place or your pocket WI-FI from LeaLea HISGO station by Target. I picked up my yen and my rail pass today in less than one hour...how's that for time management? The woman who helped me didn't even check my passport today. I did get my passport checked last time I went to JTB as I was also picking up the rail pass for other people. This place is convenient being on the ground floor at Ala Moana but I got some strange service today. The woman asks me my name, so I tell her. She gets my voucher, sits me down at the desk and then walks away. I am not sure if I am done??? After a long time examining my voucher, putting the leaflets in my envelope and acting like I am doing something without actually waiting, the lady goes "is everything OK?" to which I say "yes, are we done?" and she says that yes, we are done. That strange pause in my day cost me about 5 minutes of my life. I wish the service here was more predictable. TIP: best parking is up the ramp past JTB on "1 Fish" level. read more

If you are heading to Asia (especially Japan), this is one of the places to inquire about tours and other travel services. Particularly if you are looking for a Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass), I would visit JTB. For those not familiar with the JR Pass, it allows foreigners visiting Japan to travel the country by train at a considerable discount. There are numerous JR passes to choose from. Some are region specific if you only want to travel a certain part of the country. Passes also vary in price depending on the number of days it is valid for. I visited JTB to get a Northern Kyushu pass. While I could get this specific pass in Japan (unlike many of the other ones), I decided to get it in Hawaii because the exchange rate is more favorable than buying it in Japan. They were offering an even trade between the dollar and yen ($1 USD = ¥100) which is better than it is currently. The process to buy the pass here was quick and easy. You don't need to bring your passport with you, but make sure you provide the correct name on your passport as they need to create the pass voucher using it. Much better experience at this JTB branch than I had at the call center-esque JTB Seattle location. It has the right feel and look of what a travel agency should be. read more

I always rent my WiFi from them when I go to Japan and I've never had an issue. This time my WiFi only worked for 2 weeks. I still have a couple more weeks in Japan. No one at the JTB office explained that there is a limit to how much data could be used daily. Apparently I ran out of data, but that doesn't make sense since I PAID A LOT OF MONEY to use WiFi the entire time I'm in Japan. I emailed the company and I was told I could not get a refund for the days the WiFi will not work or I could pay even more for another device. Poor communication all around. I'm extremely disappointed. I wish something could be done to fix this situation. I'm very angry. I'm losing money on this, and I'm not getting the service I PAID FOR. read more

First timer to Japan, went to JTB to book tours. Specialist Naomi Munroe was great! Found tours in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nara. Tour guide Joe was the best in Tokyo!! Funny, personalble, knowledgeable, never a dull moment with him. When travelling from Tokyo to Kyoto, JTB had an agent waiting for me when I had to transfer trains. Kumiko was so helpful, poor thing had to wait 4 hours with me until the Shinkansen came. She went way above her pay grade and we walked around the station, had dinner, did shopping, and she helped get me my ticket back from Kyoto to Tokyo. I never knew I needed their services until the day I started planning for our family trip to Japan. With all the questions running through my mind, the staff at JTB was very accommodating with helping me in any way they could. There are staff that speak English as well as Japanese and maybe even other languages, just ask. Since I was traveling with a family of 5, and on a tight budget, I knew a tour was out of the question. And besides the cost, it was the time constraints I didn't want to have to stick to. Even then, JTB is still able to provide travelers with Japan Rail Passes, tickets to USJ and portable WIFI devices. Some things have to be ordered online or through email, but they can still help with the process. They offered to guide me through the steps on their iPad. After ordering my Rail passes online, I was notified by voicemail that my vouchers were ready to be picked up in store within a week or so. The price for the rail pass changes depending on the exchange rates, so don't fret over pennies... just get it when you need it and don't wait til the last minute! I can't remember if it was necessary but I brought our passports to pick up the vouchers just in case, to match up names and other info that was necessary for travel. I had no problems redeeming those vouchers with our passports when we arrived in Kansai. I am really grateful for the staff at this JTB location for really being patient with me and giving great useful advice for our vacation! JTB is A-OK. For my recent (and first!) trip to Japan, my friend and I opted to buy tickets online with pick up at the local JTB office. The website provided clear instructions about picking up the passes, as well as the location/address of the office. NOTE: If purchasing passes online, make sure to provide the exact name that appears on your passport as the ticket agents in Japan will match the name on the ticket voucher against the name on your passport. I decided to park in the Nordstrom parking garage since I had other errands to accomplish at Ala Moana. This location is in the shops area fronting Kapiolani Blvd within the same property/area as Nordstrom itself. I arrived on a Monday morning at nearly 1030 to find the office bustling with activity. Upon entering, visitors will find a long counter/desk where various agents are seated to help prospective customers/clients. There were two agents present at the desk when arrived and one was helping a Japanese couple, while the other was involved with a phone call. I waited for about 5-10 minutes, and during this period another staff member acknowledged that I was waiting and assured me that one of the two girls would be with me momentarily. The girl who helped me was very polite, patient, and knowledgeable. She confirmed my online purchase, printed out my rail pass vouchers, and all the while was explaining to me the terms of usage, redemption process, and inquired if I needed any tour information for Japan. I purchased a seven day JR Rail Green Car pass, which is good for the entire country, including the Shinkansen (sans certain Shinkansen trains, i.e. Nozomi Shinkansen). For the Shinkansen trains, she did mention that you need to go to the ticket office to obtain a ticket for a reserved seat before heading to the platform to catch the train. If not choosing the non-reserved car on the Shinkansen, you can proceed directly to the train. After confirming information about redeeming the pass in the Japan I was on my way to finish my errands. I'd say I was in the office at the most 15 minutes. BOTTOM LINE: Efficient and friendly service. Staff was very patient in taking the time to answer my questions. JTB provides a number of services related to travel/bookings/tours. Personally, the only service I have used them for is to purchase a JR Rail Pass. This pass sounds expensive ($262 on 3/6/19) but it definitely will save you a TON of money in Japan if you are planning to travel far distances! If you need to calculate the savings for yourself, you can go on to google maps, and look at the ticket cost from point A (ie Tokyo) to point B (ie. Osaka). The JR Rail Pass is valid on all JR lines for 7,14, or 21 days after activation depending on which pass you buy. Usually I walk in to buy my pass, but this time I was told I HAD to go online to purchase and come back to pick it up later... which was a little annoying considering I was already there. But I did as they said. Btw make sure the name on your jr pass matches your passport exactly , middle name and all! The next day it still wasn't ready so I went in the afternoon to check on it. Linda helped me and finished the order so I wouldn't have to make a 3rd trip. They do have a lot of tasks to juggle I've noticed as she had to answer 3 calls while helping me so be prepared for that. I didn't mind tho because that's the way staffing is nowadays at a lot of companies and the employees are just trying their best. Went in on a state holiday, around lunch. There was no one in the front of the store, save one agent at the desk, who was on the phone. I could hear the voices of 2-3 others in the back, talking amongst themselves. As this was to be my first trip to Japan, I had questions about the JR pass. However, it was clear the agent just wanted to get rid of me. She gave me a couple of websites, one for Hyperdia, which I already knew about, and another with their tours. I did not get any other information of any kind - written, website, verbal. The agent took a call while helping me. I was in there maybe 15 minutes and left no wiser than when I went in. Going to Japan? You wanna know a secret? Well, maybe not so much of a secret, but perhaps a little less known to some folks. It's called a Japan Rail Pass. It's the best transportation deal you can get for use in Japan. You will need, however, a separate pass for different areas there. For the price you pay for it, you can use just about any form of transportation so long as it's JR connected. I've rode Shinkansen trains, local trains, buses, ferry boats and I even traveled between Hiroshima and Okayama on the Nozomi Shinkansen up to several times a day! The reason I'm writing this review for JTB? You can get passes custom made for you, just bring your itinerary and passport and they will set it all up for you according to where you will be traveling. They know the system well and are very professional in doing their job. They even found some discrepancies in our itineraries. There isn't much room for error once you have your certificates printed out and you arrive in Japan. Once in country, you simply go to an office in the main station you will be traveling out of and redeem the certificate. You can use transportation unlimited for the dates you pay for. In Japan, trains are the best way to get around, besides taxis, but you get the best value from a pass! I had a great experience at JTB, they know how to do travel!!! I have only come here to get the Japan Rail Pass, so I can only speak to this. However, if their service on this matter is representative of all their services, I definitely recommend them. The lady who helped me on this particular visit was especially polite and efficient. It had been a while since I went through the process so I wanted to make sure nothing had changed. She answered all of my questions so that there would be no confusion when I get to Japan. She also provided me good advice about the pocket Wifi. Although I didn't end up getting one through them, I appreciated that she provided me honest information about them. I didn't feel as though she was trying to sell me on going through them (like how salesman often try to take advantage of your lack of knowledge of what to look for in a product) but simply provided the pros/cons about their options and her experience with them as well. I was fortunate that the wait wasn't too long this time. I have only been here twice, but the wait during my first visit was considerably longer since it was so busy that day. It was my first time visiting a travel agency. I was hoping to get more info or ideas for an upcoming trip to japan- or better yet, go through an agency to get help booking travel and lodging. But they seemed to be too busy, and I felt like it was more of a turn and burn place, or maybe a place that was more apt to sell the preset packages. I went here two days before my first trip to Japan. I had to get two JR Rail Passes and a pocket WiFi. There were no other people there when I went at 3:30pm and I was out by 4. The guy who helped me was very nice and answered all of my questions. You need to order the Rail Pass online but he provided an iPad for me to use and printed the vouchers right there. A pocket WiFi was available for me to take right home but I think they do run out at times. From what I saw, they also offer a bunch of tour options for different places in Japan and I believe I saw some for other countries to. read more

No nonsense transaction. I stopped by JTB to purchase a Japan rail pass. I had done most of my research online before arriving here, so I didn't have many questions for the agent. No one was there at 9:20 am, but the two agents were both on the phone. One of the ladies greeted me and motioned for me to have a seat, while she finished her phone conversation. When she was done, she apologized for the wait. On the desk is a placard that explains the different types of Japan rail passes and their prices. Along the walls are brochures for various tours throughout Japan. The agent prepared everything quickly and provided a little pamphlet with info about the pass. She explained briefly how to use it and how to get a refund if needed. She asked if I had any questions and kindly answered them. All in all, it was a short and pleasant experience. The only crux is that there is no parking infront of the store. You either can park at alamoana shopping center and walk along kapiolani blvd or find street parking. read more

I get to ride the Shinkansen (bullet train)! Hurray! Maybe you don't think it's very exciting, but I think it's neat. :] So anyway, if you're going to Japan and plan on using the Shikansen (or if you're going to travel through Japan a lot via rail), it's probably a good idea to look into getting a JR pass (an unlimited rail pass). It's a pretty good deal and it's really convenient. Only thing is that you can't buy it in Japan--you have to buy it before you leave and the JTB office is one place that sells it. - The JTB office is located on the first floor of Nordstrom--it's an office right next to where the Bodies exhibit was. It's where the Oli Oli trolleys go (facing the mall, not Kapiolani Blvd). - The ladies here are SUPER helpful. I walked in on a whim on a Friday morning and there was no wait time. Most of the information about the pass is on the website but they explained to me the rules, where to redeem it (you pick it up in Japan), and how to use it. I felt a lot more comfortable after talking with them. If you have any questions about anything regarding travel, the JTB ladies would be more then happy to sit down with you and explain. - JTB has a satellite office in Shirokiya--it's on the first floor right near the escalators. I ended up buying my pass here because it's open later. There is only one lady at the desk but she was very sweet and quick. She'll do all the paperwork for you--it takes about 5 minutes or so, but we had to wait about 15 minutes for her to swing by the main office to pick up the passes. It wasn't really a problem, there's so much to look at in Shirokiya! - If you are interested in tours, most of the information is on their website. I would totally recommend calling the office if you needed a little help deciding. The JTB lady I spoke with gave great advice about general Japan travel and tours--she told me which ones were more interesting for young people. Haha! read more

JTB is the leading Japanese Travel Bureau organizing most of the travel incoming from Japan. They have deep connections with Hawaii Tourism and government agencies and along with KNT and HIS corner both incoming and outgoing travel from and to Japan. I have no problem with their services.. other than the trolleys and buses. There are way too many of them. They drive way to fast. Some of them drive over old ladies who do not get out of the way in front of DFS. Fact. Some of their passengers fall out because they are standing in these open trolleys who have no doors.. and the drivers might drive a little wild around corners. Fact. They will take off your nose if you are standing too close to the curb on Kuhio near their trolley stops. I guess they are in a hurry because they have no where to go. They only carry passengers who book travel through JTB... so you see trolley stops.. with only Japanese tourists waiting for their particular travel service bus to take them to the mall. They should take other tourists for a small fee if they are not full which would promote their services for mainlanders to Japan. None are electric, and Hawaii is suppose to be one day soon ... be using only renewable energy and should now promote a clean energy future. I only see a few of them full going to the mall some of the older open air trolleys they sold to KNT are cool looking... but spew black soot. REally bad if you are behind at a stop light. If you are in front of DFS (Duty Free Shop) on Royal Hawaiian Ave ... you will see one trolley after another... today 10 trolleys and buses in a row, and no room for cars... again most are not full and some are totally empty. Now they have new Oli Oli buses that are gigantic and look like whales. I would like to take it to the mall sometimes instead of being packed like a sardine in The Bus. The tourists look bored riding around in them back and forth to the Ala Moana Mall and Ward Center shops ... hopefully they go to the KCC Farmers Market on Saturday.. and daily to the Whole Foods at the Kahala Mall (Japanese love gourmet organic foods) because normal bus service there is not convenient. I wish they would share riders and use less buses. I wish they would play nice Hawaiian slack key music as they drive around in circles in Waikiki. Ok you dont want local people on your bus.. but why dont you share Japanese tourists with the HIS and KNT ... less buses and the ones you have are more full, less pollution.. less traffic, less noise pollution. I see that few Japanese read or use yelp reviews, but locals do. I hope JTB management does. I know they are good professionals and look to the future.. they now rule the road it is up to them to be leaders.. not the tail wagging the dog. read more

I unfortunately have to agree with the other low star reviews, I had a nearly identical experience to some of the reviews who claim this place, which has great potential to be a generator for Japan tourism is pretty sad. The woman who "helped" (I use that term loosely) me seemed to have less answers for me than I had for myself already. My sister asked some basic questions about the jr pass and she just shot back quickly to check HYPERDIA which my sister knew about already. She couldn't give ANY additional info. The only reason why I didn't give 1 star is that my main objective was accomplished, I was able to purchase my jr pass here. The experience was subpar to say the least. If you need your jr pass then I would recommend it, but don't expect to get any other useful information out of the transaction. read more

MAKE SURE YOUR NAME MATCHES EXACTLY WHAT IT SAYS ON YOUR PASSPORT. I ordered passes online and did not add JR to one of the passes. Upon picking up the passes we were notified that it would need to be changed and that we could make sure what was on the passport and come back. However, no one told me that there is a 10% charge for name changes/ refunds and that I would need to refund the original ticket and purchase another one. So I ended up paying $30 to add another two letters to the end of a name. Refunds also take 3-4 weeks to be processed so you really have funds tied up for two tickets instead of one. It is hot in there, they need some better A/C. Honestly if you need to order the JTB rail passes, you should just get them shipped to you and save the trouble of making your way down there. read more

JTB Hawaii staff has a long way to go in servicing Hawaii Clients. THe agents are not friendly or engaging and I think what could be a lucrative business in Hawaii might fail because it is not clear to the people,who work there about what their role is. IT is difficult to get help from the agents, who,just sit there and type in the computer. COme on guys...you're a disappointment. So my girlfriend and I went in on a Friday early afternoon to scout prices for a multi-city flight to Japan. Unfortunately we went too early as the dates we wanted were not available. However, there were dates available in our time frame so our agent, Monica Kayano, was able to give us an idea of how much it would be. Then she gave me a time frame to call her when then dates we wanted would be available. a few days later, I called her back. The exact dates we wanted were a bit pricier then what she had originally projected but with some flexibility, we moved the trip up one day and saved about $200. The prices were awesome though, $535 per person round-trip on Hawaiian. We're flying Honolulu to Kansai and Haneda to Honolulu. We still have to reserve hotels and work out the train from Osaka to Tokyo, but Monica has been really helpful so far accommodating our early planning. read more

Be aware that there are 2 separate JTB's. The 'oli'oli side is facing Ala Moana. The other JTB travel agency (the one facing Walgreens) is the place to go if you want help booking rail passes etc. The staff are not as polite as I would expect from a Japanese company. I guess they already picked up the American way of doing things. Although not explicitly rude, the 2 agents were not as perky as I would expect. The agent did not even offer to explain what they could offer us in terms of tour packages or even offer to explain the difference between the 'ordinary car' or 'green car.' We were hoping to walk away with a wealth of options, instead, we left with a bewildered look on our faces. There are MANY other Japanese travel agencies in Hawaii. JTB gets very busy during the February and March months! I went on a Saturday one weekend and they close at 1:00, but we had to wait awhile. I made an appointment on a Monday afternoon they close at 5:30. The lady was so incredible nice and so helpful! Planning a trip to Japan and in two weeks (last minute) and she was extremely helpful. Told us about what site to check for the trains, told us about a portable wifi place and we could order with a cheaper price for JTB, and we got to get our rail pass! I even got to order my tours online! Location wise you need to park in Nordstrom parking lot and walk down. Definitely going back here to ask for more information for future trips! read more

I recently returned from a Vietnam journey that was orchestrated by JTB Hawaii. The was 6 months in planning with many revisions and additions. Mika Kubo is one of the BEST travel agents I've ever dealt with. She is so informative, organized and the wonderful trip could not have turned out any better if not for Mika's service. From the moment we stepped into Honolulu International Airpot for our departure to our return Mika made sure everything ran smoothly, ensuring we had the perfect seats on each flight to having our private tour guide meet us at each destination arrival gate. There was nothing for us to worry about except having a wonderful vacation. She even called me when I returned to check and make sure everything went smoothly on our trip. This is SERVICE! My husband and I wanted to purchase JR Hokkaido rail passes for an upcoming trip to Japan. Although JTB gets lots of good reviews, we were very disappointed in the service we received from travel consultant Linda Okabe. When we went in all the sales reps were busy so we sat down. Linda Okabe politely asked us to wait a few minutes while she finished with a customer. After calling us to her station we told her what we needed. As she was helping us, she took three phone calls and helped another sales agent. Because she was so busy multi-tasking and helping others at the same time she was trying to help us, she had to ask us to repeat information we had already given. We have no doubt that JTB is a good company, but we will not go again because of the rude, disrespectful behavior of this one agent. Maybe we are old-fashioned, but if you are helping a customer your full attention should be given to that customer. Other customers can wait their turn, as we did. read more
