After an early morning flight to DFW, we were halfway through the two-hour drive to the north-Texas town of Wichita Falls when lunch sounded like a good idea. Initially, I said that I was in the mood for a lighter lunch, but when we read some of the many 5-star reviews for Juan and Allie's BBQ that said things like "I will always come here whenever I am within a six hour drive", I changed my mind. So we pulled off the highway and about a half-mile into the small town of Sunset. I realized we were at the spot when the faint smell of wood smoke trickled to my nose from the side of a weatherbeaten building with a "Backyard BBQ" banner tacked to the front. Walking inside, we were greeted by nods from a table of men in work boots and jeans, and then promptly welcomed by Allie herself. She indicated the day's menu on the board and helpfully answered our questions. The inside dining area was comfortable and homey, even if like the outside it had seen better days. Sagging ceiling tiles and duct tape repairs told the story of getting by and focusing on the important things. It is a real family-run operation, with Juan smoking the meats and Allie making the sides, along with waiting tables. On the day we visited at least, it was just the two of them working. Of course I had to order brisket since it was Texas, but the sides presented a more challenging decision. After hearing Allie's description of their cowboy beans, I chose those and the potato salad. She disappeared into the back room, and soon returned with a large metal tray containing slices of brisket and Texas-sized portions of sides. The brisket was beautifully smoked and sliced, and flavor was perfect. The only deduction I have to make was due to it being a little less tender than I would expect from a great brisket. It went down easily despite having said I was not in the mood for a pile of meat, but I did have to make use of my knife a little more than usual. The sides were big on home-cooked flavor. In both, I noticed a big difference from typical southern or big-name barbecue joints in that they were not overly sweet but relied on more earthy seasonings for their taste. They were excellent complements to the beef, and deserve some recognition of their own. After our meal was done, we chatted with Juan outside for a minute, where we learned some of the details mentioned above. It would have been cool to hear more about their story, but they had work to do and we had to get back on the road. Stopped in for the first time last Sunday during a full day of riding. The food and service are top notch. Between me and my riding buddy we sampled the brisket, ribs, jalapeño chedder sausage, and pork ribs. All excellent. And if that wasn't enough, the sides can also stand on their own as a reason to visit. I had the collard greens and mac n cheese. My buddy had potato salad as well as the mac n cheese. The service was super friendly and the place has a real home cooked atmosphere, like you were eating in your grandma's kitchen. Make it a point to visit if you're in the area. read more

I picked up some brisket, sausage and a couple of family size side dishes. The meats were AMAZING! Hands down the best brisket I have had a in a very long time. Those cowboy beans were great! It easily fed the 4 of us for about $60.00. Thats 15 bucks a head....not bad considering a combo meal at a fast food joint can hit you for 12-15 bucks now. First of all let me say this is probably the best central TX style BBQ I've had in the north TX area! Flavor was spot on; 5 stars! But giving the restaurant 5 stars as a whole means that it has no room for growth and I'm think they have room for growth. I ordered the 2 meat plate with brisket & ribs; they did not have ribs so I asked if the sausage was made in house? It currently is not so I went with the brisket & pulled pork for meats and collard greens & cornbread for my sides; all to go. When I received my order, I received the meats and sides, including 2 sm containers of sauce, but no onions, pickles, peppers, etc. Since I perfer most of my BBQ without sauce, I tasted both the brisket & pork and neither needed sauce. The pork was moist & well seasoned throughout. The brisket was pull apart tender, seasoned well throughout with a nice bark; both very delicious! I did taste the 2 sauces & both had a very similar flavor with 1 being a bit more spicy, so I assume same base sauce with 1 being mild & 1 spicy? Either would have paired well with the pork if you like sauce with your meat. The collards were unique to me in that they had garlic and a small amount of tomatoes mixed in giving them a bit of Italian flavor to me. I'm usually not a fan of tomatoes, but these weren't overpowering and gave the greens a nice acidic balance. The cornbread, jalapeno cheese cornbread, was dense with a good balance of sweet and jalapeno flavor; it was very rich! Speaking with the owners, they said they were in the process of getting ready to make their own sausage. I'm excited to give both the homemade sausage & their ribs a try in the future. I would also like to see the staple BBQ "condiments" to be added in the future. These folks know how to cook; they now flavors! I will definitely be back and encourage anyone passing by Sunset, TX on 287, hop off the highway and make a stop for some awesome BBQ. read more

We are from KC originally and just moved to Sunset, so we know our BBQ! This little place is the best BBQ we have ever eaten! I don't know how they manage to cut the ribs because when you take a bite, the meat comes right off the bone. The brisket is fork tender. The pulled pork just melts in your mouth. We were there one night when Juan had fixed some "pork candy" burnt ends and I think they should be added to the menu! Absolute deliciousness! We've had a few of the sides and my favorite is smoked mac and cheese. You can't go wrong ordering anything here. Well worth the drive from Decatur, or the best place to stop between Decatur and Wichita Falls, they are only a mile off 287. I crave their food. This BBQ joint is definitely worth the stop! My husband and I are on a long road trip through Texas and saw this on Google, the reviews DO NOT lie. I had the ribs with potato salad and mac & cheese everything was delicious. The ribs are out of this world! My husband had the brisket sandwich and it was also to die for! Allie was very warm and welcoming and their family story is beautiful. As avid road trippers we are always looking for a convenient place to stop and we found it here. Only about 1 mile off the highway very easy parking and quick access back on the highway. This is a must stop, we will come here any and every time we're in town! read more

Some of the best barbecue I've ever had, brisket and ribs are always delicous, so good that it doesn't require any sauce but the sauce is delicous. The owners are very good Christian people that cook with a lot of love in they're food. If your around sunset you should def try them out it's even worth a good drive. read more
