First of all what a hidden gem and honestly never knew about this place till I just happened to chat gpt spots to eat in Decatur. Was visiting for the day and figured why not I love a good challenge. Boy did it not disappoint the outside well let me back up its hidden in a parking lot of some establishments that I can't remember off the top of my head but when you arrive just know you gotta keep an eye out for this place. The staff was super friendly and very welcoming the ordering prices was nice as well very clear cut and doesn't make you feel rushed. Service was quick to I got it to go and it was right at open but I can tell at any moment this place will be popping. The jalapeño cheddar sausage was amazing as were the ribs. The rub on it was fantastic it was euphoric but man only two pieces. The Mac and cheese for me is the star even though I like my Mac and cheese like a cardi b song the bread crumbs made up for it. Now the downside. The banana pudding. I'm a stickler for a banana pudding. This isn't it yall. Skip it at five dollars it's just not worth it. No nilla waffers not actual banana pieces in it. No layered whip. Just it's not my thing it might be for some but my banana pudding standards are thru the roof. The ambiance is great plenty of seating inside and looks amazing. From the outside you'll be like what the heck but once inside you'll feel like man I'm here for something special. Minus the banana pudding. Driving around Texas eating BBQ on the Texas Monthly Top 50 so we had to drop by North Texas Smoke. I knew that this place was popular and might sell out fast so I started calling and DM this place as we really did want so brisket. The problem occurred when we showed up and were told that they were out of Brisket. After a brief conversation with the lady taking orders and the pit master they were able to find us some chopped and sliced brisket, THANK YOU. The brisket was good as were the ribs but the star of the show was the boudin. We got our order to go. So the process is order and pay out 1 window then wait to hear your name so that you can get your order. When we visited the place was hard to find and we drove past it once as they did not have a sign. It's a nice place and the food was good. My recommendation try hard to order early and call them several times before they run out of brisket. read more

So, not sure how many times I have been here now, but it's a lot; going back over the prior year. Biggest challenge for me is hours of operation. They are currently only open a few days a week for a few hours on those select days. Bummer. I'm not going to get into whether or not this place is good, I've already addressed it in prior reviews and updates; in one word it's 'stellar'. The proprietor; Derek has done a tremendous job moving from very small outlet to a very cool large restaurant facility. I took five people there on Saturday and it was a great experience. Derek personally brought the food out. We chatted for a bit, I congratulated him on his growing his business. He said in one day, he does more revenue than he did in a weeks time at his prior "to go" only location. Good for him, he's a true American success story that clearly busted his butt to build his business. If only we had more of those. He's got a great formula. I can't criticize anything he's done; even the bathrooms are spotless and top notch. Whoever built out the plumbing in his place is truly an artist, you have to look at the details, it's not a budget operation. Kudos to this guy for killing it and putting a great crew together. If you haven't tried it you're doing yourself a disservice. If I'm disappointed about one thing, it's the fact he doesn't have those tallow based salted chocolate chip cookies anymore; at least that I could tell. I forgot to ask him about it. He may have had trouble getting consistent quality from his baker, but they were just absolutely awesome and a hell of a deal in my opinion. Pro Tip: I mentioned that I had a pellet grill and I wasn't able to get enough smoke flavor into the meat. It turns out he started on the same one I have. I've got a Yoder YS 640 competition model. He gave me some solid pointers. I can't wait to try them. It will never be as good as his, but hopefully I can improve. read more

Darn good BBQ! I was worried that they would be sold out since I came late, but they still had almost everything. I don't know how these places do it. The brisket is so much better than anything I have ever made and they are so humble about it. There was no line for me and my food came out quick. Starting off my tour of the top 50 BBQ joints in Texas is North Texas Smoke. Housed in a large trailer with smokers in and around it, grill inside for smash burgers and the like. I love the 1,000 gallon smoker and only wish I could wrangle the 500 gallon backup. Menu on the wall. Specials listed as they should be, made it easy to see what to order; I had the Texas Trinity, with cheese grits and Mac & Cheese. My link choice was brisket boudin which was also the special today. My wife order the chopped beef sandwich with street corn side. Both came with pickles, pickled red onions, and bbq sauce. Service was fast and the had dining outside but looks like most orders are takeaway, as we did today. After a 45 minute drive home, here is the results. Ribs were very good, competition style with a little pull but tender. Good bark and plenty of meat. The brisket was about 3/8" slice with a very thin fat cap. Not quite as tender as Franklins but great bark, taste and servings size. The Boudin sausage was excellent, soft texture due to rice filling, salty, and the brisket came through well. Cheese grits side Was very good, with a nice savory flavor and a cheese bite that was satisfying. Mac & Cheese was good but lacked a defining taste. Pickled red onions were excellent and the sauce was a vinegar base that zinged your tastebuds. A little goes a long way. The chopped beef was served with a huge pile of brisket on the side of a toasted bun. The wife said it was very, very good. Her street corn tasted very fresh and was a good bite. The star of her dish was the Texas Rattler; a stuffed jalapeño cooked perfectly and tasted excellent. Overall good start for my tour of the Top 50. read more

I am really sorry to be one of the only 4 star ratings. But I have to be honest here First off it's hard to find! Look for the little food truck behind the tractor place! I thought it did add to the ambience, but I did drive around more than I wanted. The staff was amazing, very helpful in answering our questions, helping us make our order, and letting me poke around the smokers, taking a look at the next days briskets. (They were beautiful) My wife and I ordered a two meat plate with two sides. We got the ribs and the brisket with the Mac & cheese and the Cowboy beans. Surprise- here it was 11 o'clock and they had already sold out of the mac & cheese. They were in the process of making more, but that was going to be a good 20 minutes later. She ended up getting the loaded, baked potato salad, which she thoroughly enjoyed. My only issue was that the ribs were a little undercooked. The meat did not pull off of the bone cleanly. The taste was good. They were a little bit tough. Why I did 4 stars. OK The brisket was the absolute BOMB!! I have eaten Barbecue from Houston to Amarillo and San Antonio to Texarkana! That had to be in my top three briskets I have ever eaten!! It might be the absolute best. It is Absolutely worth the drive to go out to Decatur to eat here. I'm a pitmaster who works in the Texas top 50 scene, so believe me when I tell you North Texas Smoke is putting out excellent bbq, at a reasonable price, with great customer service. The Frito chili was spicy but not over the top with great flavor lots of meat, no beans (thankfully). Turkey was moist and tender, they use good soft buns for their sandwich. Ribs were porky not overly seasoned allowing the meat to sing. Was able to take easy bites without the meat completely falling off the bone. Brisket was very smoky, more smoky than most restaurants in Texas. The fat was rendered and yellow as it should be, smoke ring on meat side of the brisket, and intramuscular fat wasn't completely cooked out of the moist side of the brisket. Solid salt and pepper based brisket. Brisket boudin was beefy and delicious, and the texture was that of a boudin link. Mac and cheese was good, loaded potato salad had cheese and I believe bacon mixed throughout if you like potato salad you'll be happy. The elote is definitely the don't miss side. It's slightly sweet slightly spicy, creamy served with jalapeños don't sleep on it (my next trip I'll be ordering the brisket elote.) Well done north Texas smoke. If I had any negative criticism it would be the navigation to the food trailer, my navigation didn't take me to their location but instead sent me 100 yards up the road to the tractor store. Like some of the other reviews mentioned, it's a bit pricey but it is worth the price! The quality of food and the portions are worth what you pay. I got the one meat with sides and it's two meals, breaks down to $12 a meal for some absolutely delightful food. Everything we tried was . The smoke on the brisket was perfect, tender, moist, I didn't even use the sauce but I did taste it and it was good too!
