Two stars because the service is TERRIBLE, but the food is overall good. However, very disappointed with my recent visit here. Husband and i bought a Groupon for "food and drinks for two". we both ordered FULL dinner meals for food, and waters. When we were finished, our server walked by us over 20 times when we were clearly finished with our meal. Had to loudly say excuse me to get him to get our check. At this time a woman came back and said we "couldn't redeem it because it said food and drink" and we only got waters and that isn't a drink. And then the lady laughed like it was some funny joke. We have purchased many Groupons before that have said the same thing, and never has this happened. So we buy two Coke's that we don't drink. She runs the check. And the same thing happens with our male server again. Passes us over 20 times and doesn't take our card to pay. Husband had to get his attention. Again. Unreal horrible experience. This was once a good place, but I ate here a week ago & it was an extremely disappointing experience. I called ahead to ask if they serve alcohol. They said they do. I asked because when I ate here about a year ago & ordered a Margarita, I was given a long song & dance about a liquor license; & they ultimately brought me something in a can. So, I ordered a Margarita this time. When an older woman (not my server) brought it outside to me, she said, "Here's your Margarita." Then came the food (barely average tasting, by the way). I tasted the Margarita for the first time: It tasted like fruit juice. I kept waiting for the server (a young man) to return, but he never did. So I ate all I could choke down & had to drink part of the "Margarita" because I had nothing else to drink! He showed up with my check & I asked if there was tequila in my drink. He said he didn't know, but then became defensive & said, "But you drank half of it!" I said that was because I had nothing else to drink. I said, "Don't charge me for an alcoholic beverage." He kept saying, "You drank half of it." So, I paid my bill & left. Needless to say, I won't be returning. No one else should either. read more

Beware. Even though they advertise alcohol sales they have apparently lost their license and no longer sell. They still have beer advertisements in the window and inside. Quickly becoming a favorite! Mexican food in Bloomington is pretty much the same thing everywhere, but Juanita's has something else going on. They also just added to their already authentic and tasty menu. I love the street tacos, especially the Al Pastor (sweet pineapple pork tacos) - delish! They are served on hand-made corn tortillas and only $2/each for Taco Tuesday. New on the menu is an unlimited soup or salad option - can't wait to go back and try it! read more

Purchased a voucher from Groupon earlier this month and took my daughter here today to redeem it. We were informed that the voucher may not be redeemed on weekends. Hmmmmm......... So we left and had a wonderful meal elsewhere. When I got home I checked the offer AND the voucher. No contingencies listed on either. Obviously, they are making this up as they go along. We will come in during the week, just to avoid argument, and redeem our voucher (noting what others have pointed out- That they might try to require us to purchase 4 drinks, which we will not do). And that will be our last visit to Juanita's. We've liked it fairly well here before, but there are enough excellent Mexican restaurants in Bloomington that not going to Juanita's won't bother us at all. This place is cute, and I'm guessing a few months ago, it was making good food. However, the restaurant seems completely overwhelmed now. Chips and salsa were delivered after the guacamole -- we had to stare at the guacamole a good 5 minutes before we could eat it. The salsa was bland and clearly from a jar. We never had the same server twice at our table. The tacos we ordered were brought out in ten minutes despite a very busy dinner. The meat was barely warm and extremely dried out. I'm guessing that in anticipation of customers, they precook everything. Other reviewers said the tortillas are homemade. They currently are not. Bummer. The restaurant is certainly welcome to Bloomington, where street tacos, tortas, and chili rellenos are seldom on the menu. But the food and service, currently, leaves much to be desired. read more

Like most towns, there is an `Authentic` Mexican restaurant on every corner in Bloomington . . . . strange though that we have NO chain Mexican joints unless you consider Taco Bell LOL. Among the choices Juannitas stands out as having a more authentic feel and menu. At some places I feel like I am reading a cookie cutter menu with typical fare, several dozen combination choices that all seem the same and a few extras. At Juannitas the menu is more diverse, the selection unique and the food quality is terrific. Located just off the downtown square, the facility is nothing special - an old house with two stories of dining, and a large (very nice) outdoor patio on the rooftop level that is a great place to hand out in the warmer months. Service is good, though they can get quite crowded so plan accordingly. Its worth the wait. read more

The website and menu are sadly misleading. We were driving from Chicago to IU, and decided to stop for lunch before heading to our hotel. I had looked up the menu online and was impressed with the large numbers of selections and fantastic descriptions of the entrees. I ordered the Salmon tacos which were presented on both the website and the menu as follows: Salmon Wild Tacos 15.99 Now 4 Juicy Smoked Grilled Salmon, topped with Caramel Peach Pico de Gallo, served with White Rice & Beans What I received were four plain smelly salmon tacos that were neither smoked nor grilled (tasted like canned salmon warmed over) with no pico of any sort, runny refried beans, and yellow rice. When I complained to the waitress, she replied: "I don't know...he just handed them to me that way so......" She eventually took them back to the kitchen and then brought the same tacos back with a small plastic cup of watery pico de gallo ( not the "Caramel Peach Pico de Gallo"). Finally, I just sent them back and ordered an "Off the Cob" Mexican street corn salad which apparently translated as iceberg lettuce, slivers of mealy tomatoes, and frozen corn with no dressing. By that time, I had lost my appetite. My mother had the chicken chimichanga, and it was perfectly fine. According to the manager, my meal was not as good because "This is a Mexican place and we aren't really good with American tastes or salads" to which I replied, "Then why do you offer it on the menu." She also had no explanation to as why my meal didn't match the description on the menu. It was very clear that neither she nor our waitress knew the menu or what it's claiming to serve. Thankfully, the manager did comp my meal and apologized profusely, but I left with a sour stomach and a sour mood. First visit for me. Delish chips - fresh! I think made in house. Salsa very tasty with just enough heat. Everthing is delicious- authentic Mexican food is on their sign and I agree. Tamal with chicken and mole in a banana leaf - yum. Heat levels in everything - just right for me, enough to taste, but not so strong you cant taste anything else. Service was the only good thing at our last experience. We recently visited town for the football game and my boyfriend had a proposed. We looked for places to take my mom and found a coupon on groupon and because of that we chose to go to Juannitas. After dinner our waiter told us that the owner said that we could only use it on certain days, although it does not say that in fine print at all. Wait staff did not know how to use the groupon voucher at all. Management should not even have a groupon If they are going to make up their own rules and they are not training their staff. Ever since Juannita's first opened in Bloomington it's been a fast favorite of mine for Mexican food in Btown. Their food seems more authentic than anywhere else in town and the quality of the food is great. They are a little pricier than some other places locally but you're paying for the difference in quality. The staff usually isn't very talkative but they are fast and attentive. Their guacamole is a great start and their chips are usually very fresh. Their salsa is on the chunkier side and is very mild if you were hoping to get something hotter. Their fajitas are usually a go-to which are packed with flavorful meat and fresh mix of peppers, onion, and tomatoes served with delicious corn tortillas. Juannita's...this is a nice restaurant serving Mexican food in Bloomington, Indiana. Since there are not a lot of Mexican restaurants in Bloomington, anyone seeking this cuisine will eventually end up trying Juannita's. You can't miss the place as its painted bright yellow on the outside. It has a nicely sized dining room on the inside...seating upstairs...and a large patio area for good weather. TVs are all around for those seeking sports updates. Now to the food. Let's begin with a summary - 4 star food, 2 star margaritas, and 2 star website...yielding 3 stars overall. We started as all Mexican meals must start...with chips and salsa...both very nice here and just a bit of zing in the salsa - 4 stars. We also had a cup of guacamole to sample...nice texture but no zing from any jalapenos - 2 stars. Our table of three for dinner had: the mix and match dinner of a tamale (their expressed specialty...we had it with cheese and veggies - 4 stars even though the cheese was pretty tasteless), an enchilada (ground beef and served in a nice soft-wrap shell - 5 stars), a tostada (chicken - tasted too spicy for this customer - 2 stars), and a single taco (beef...fine but unremarkable - 3 stars); the second in our party had the chicken quesadilla (the same spicy chicken - but she liked it - with more veggies than meat - 3 1/2 stars); and the last of our party had the burrito del norte (one beef and one pork...both very nice but not your usual burrito as big as a football...these were simply soft tortillas filled lightly with the meats - 4 stars). All-in-all the food was very good and the selection on the menu is extensive...there is a lot more here to try. Now to margaritas and websites - both 2 stars. The website says Mondays are 1/2 priced margaritas...the sign on the front door says 1/2 priced margarita PITCHERS on Mondays...that is a big difference. We asked for the website 1/2 price on the margaritas, and the boss in the kitchen honored the website...so points for the staff that they fulfilled the website. But the whole thing is confusing...the website also says you get a free tequila shot with medium and large drinks...is that with the 1/2 price? They make it confusing for themselves. Lastly on margaritas...the frozen were perfect...lush and a nice taste of tequila...the on the rocks tasted of absolutely no tequila at all. In fact, I had a couple and there was nothing in the on-the-rocks margaritas...next time I'll get frozen. Management may want to put a little tequila in these drinks...people come to have a good time and share a drink and a meal...the Mexican way. But management has to put a little booze in the drinks or you are just having a nice lemon/limeade with your ice cubes. Don't cheapen the fine start...put a little extra not a little less in the drinks and watch the results. All-in-all this was a nice stop. When they fix the website and work on the margaritas I think it easily reaches 4 stars all around. read more

Most authentic Mexican spot in B-town and wide selection. This is coming from some one of Mexican descent and who has traveled widely in Mex. Only Mexican place in town I actually want to go back to. Not on par with LA, Texas or Chicago for that matter but as good as it gets in town for authentic food. First off make sure you ask for the spicy salsas--the real deal red and green tomatillo salsa. No self-respecting Mexican or lover of Mexican food should be caught dead eating the bland tomato mush they serve to the weak of stomach. whatever you get will be greatly enhanced in the flavor dept. they are spicy so careful compa. The tacos are all solid. Tried lengua, chorizo and potato and the pork chile verde. I also had the molote dinner. Molotes are like a corn based empanadas or a Mexican hot pocket of deliciousness. you get three and they are filled with chicken, potato and cheese and peppers, respectively. If you're from the coast or Latin America, you won't be impressed. This rating is made by comparing Juannita's to all the other Mexican joints in town, and taking into account that there aren't many Mexicans in Bloomington and no fresh seafood. That said, there's a few things setting this place apart from the other Mexican options. 1. Street-style, food truck-style tacos. No cheese, no refried beans, no bullshit. It's just classic tacos made of well-seasoned meat filling with onion, lime, and cilantro on small corn tortillas. If you appreciate authentic Mexican tacos, you understand this to be a good thing. You can get three for about $7. 2. Mexican options beyond the standard "American Mexican". So they have your chicken nachos, your burrito, your cheese dip, blah blah whatever. But if you love Mexican food, you'll be more interested in lengua, chorizo con papas, pork al pastor with pineapple, grilled cactus, molé, queso dip with hot sausage, stuff like that. There's boring bean burritos for grandma, but they've also got actual Mexican dishes for those that appreciate that kind of thing. 3. Tortillas are made in-house, and they are happy to make corn versions of the quesadilla and burrito tortillas. This is a gold mine for gluten free diners like me and my girlfriend. She ordered a quesadilla with corn tortilla, expecting to be shut down, and they said "Is it ok if it takes a minute longer? We don't have corn quesadillas ready." If you are a serious diner, you know that it is worth it to trade a minute of waiting to get totally fresh handmade food. 4. Sometimes when I have gone there, I order, they bring the chips and salsa, and as we're about to get through the first little bowl of salsa the rest of the food shows up. Fast service. Also they've got a good selection of cervezas, including Negra Modelo which is perfection (again, if you know diddly dong doo about Mexican food this will matter). I took my mom and her boyfriend to Juanita's for dinner thinking this will be the best Mexican food in Bloomington. Let's start off with the negatives : 1. We waited 1 hour and 2 minutes for Nachos, 2 enchiladas, and 1 burrito 2. Like another yelper said they penny pinch to the max. Their prices and their portions do not correlate whatsoever.
