We are originally from San Diego so we know Baja and Sonoran food. This very sorry excuse of a Mexican restaurant was bustling with college kids who clearly have no idea what Mexican food should taste like. The mystery meat in three different tacos all felt and tasted the same. Guacamole was brown and $5 street tacos for about an ounce of over cooked protein is robbery, as is their three tacos and a tasteless slap of beans for $20. I really hate to write this because I've genuinely enjoyed the street tacos. Even after my husband said he didn't like the food and didn't want to return, I kept coming back--about 10-12 times, especially over the past year--often bringing my sister and niece or getting carry out. Unfortunately, today was the last. My husband and father-in-law didn't enjoy their meals (not a surprise), but I actually liked mine. What ruined the experience was the service--not all due to the young waitress who seemed brand new--but because of how we were treated when we had questions. (Yes, poor service but we still left over 20% tip because she seemed new.) We were charged $5.99 for a chip refill--even though the first basket was still partially full when it was taken. If that $6 fee is on the menu, I take responsibility for missing it--but please, kindly point it out, don't snap at me. I simply asked the question. Then there was an almost $2 service fee, which they claimed was for paying with a card--even though we paid in cash. When I tried to ask for clarification from who seemed to be either the manager or owner as he was by the cash register, I didn't seek him out, I was cut off and told to stop talking over him. I was speechless. As a regular customer, that was incredibly disappointing and disrespectful. I've been a loyal supporter, but this experience was terrible! Still slightly in shock. I have eaten there several times and enjoyed it. However, this last time was horrible I got a steak fajita chimichanga and half of the steak was inedible. I had a pile of gristle in my plate when done. Secondly, the booth we sat in was the most uncomfortable restaurant seating I have ever experience. A decent visit and I may come back, the jury is still out on that. For starters, they do not have menus, you scan a QR code to access their menu on your phone which is a big negative in my book. The waitress was great, took care of our party, and was working hard. Our food took 20-25 minutes to be prepared when there were not a lot of people in the restaurant. I ordered the Horchata which was very good, and I would order it again. The Tacos were good. The carnitas was the best, and I highly recommend ordering it. The 2nd best was the Al Pastor. The Tacos were good for Bloomington standards and rank in the top 5 for Mexican food on/near campus. It was a little pricey, you are most likely spending a minimum of $20 if you dine here. Got it home (we live maybe five minutes away) and my rice and beans were cold, almost like they had just come out of the fridge. Had to microwave them before I could eat. There are 2 locations in Bloomington-this is for the restaurant on College Ave. We had dinner here on a Saturday night. While service was a bit slow, we had great company to occupy our time. It made up for the fact that the food was fantastic! The Cheese dip was a great appetizer-It was thick with great flavor, and the chips were lightly seasoned. For drinks we tried the White Sparking Sangria-which we all voted as the favorite. We also thought the Peach Margarita (frozen) was a solid choice. It was balanced, and not too sweet. For the main dish we tried: Tacos de Birria (we voted this the best dish. Amazing flavor, and texture. I can't wait to get this again). Tacos de Carne Asada (fresh and light, not heavy). Alright guys, so this is the only Mexican restaurant in Bloomington (to my knowledge) that has vegetarian "beef," AND vegetarian "chik'n!!!!" This doesn't sound like much, but trust me, this is rare! As a vegetarian this makes them top notch! Everything we had was amazing and delicious, but the headliner/my all time fav that I will be reordering over and over again is the vegetarian nachos: they were a sweet potato base, which amped up the flavor so much, and came fully loaded! This isn't about their food, which might be OK. This is about the fact that the menus vary between locations, and between them, and their Internet menu. We went to the location on 3rd St but discovered it was definitely focused towards meat-eater real Mexican. As we're largely vegetarians, and there were only very few of those selections from their online menu, we had to pass. This place might be fine. I'm always a Mexican FANATIC, and this place serves! It is extremely well priced, so for college students it is a great spot. The ambiance is so-so--the lights are too bright and it is a bit too quiet. It would be more fun to have some music blasting. But there is plenty of seating, and the servers are very kind. I ordered a carne asada burrito, cheese dip, and some guacamole tonight. The burrito was okay, the steak didn't have very much flavor though. Unfortunately, the rice that came with the burrito had a few hard pieces in it, like the rice was either over or undercooked. The guacamole was good but the cheese dip was super thin... TOO thin for me. It wasn't tasty unless I completely covered a chip in it which isn't ideal. I like a creamier dip. I think I'll stick to other places in btown for Mexican. Request outdoor dining in season and there is a small courtyard behind the restaurant that is a great place to relax and enjoy a quiet dinner. It's not readily apparent that it exists unless you ask.
