While waiting for an appointment, it's kinda tacky to hear staff loudly talking about a call with another patient who was frustrated with them about scheduling, and hear them make fun of her and say things like 'I was gonna tell her the information she needed but she cut me off so good luck to her I guess haha' like... I get this is your job, and everyone wants to complain about their work or 'clients/customers' that they view as annoying, but this is the healthcare field. This is people's lives, and yeah folks get frustrated in regard to their personal health and trying to navigate the hell that is our healthcare system. Leave those conversations at home, or at a low enough volume that folks in the waiting room can't hear you. It does not fill me with confidence that patients information and struggles are going to be taken seriously and not mocked when I hear that in the waiting room. Also not being able to schedule an appointment 3 months out, when I was specifically told by my doctor that I need to come back in 3 months, is kinda ridiculous. I'll try and remember to call back and schedule myself in a few months, but it's very likely I'll forget which is why I wanted to get it put on the books today. :(

Most doctors focus on their computer these days while one ear is listening. Here they listen and truly want to help however they can. I consider my provider a friend because she cares so much. Its a true blessing to get the kind of care only seen in old movies. Thank You to everyone at Well Life Medicine as well as Molly Rodden!

We just sat there and stared at eachother for maybe 60 seconds. I wish I could tell you why but it was scary, bizarre, and cruel. I'm the one who broke the stare off and silence... I have year round allergies I asked about and he shrugged and mentioned one drug, that was it. We went over two prescriptions I have, he said wow that's a high dosage when referring to my antidepressant, he did not elaborate. There was a knot on my throat he said he would be willing to see through till the end-- I'm OK, I'll go to another doctor. It's clear he didn't want me in the appointment and he had an attitude the majority of the time. He rolled his eyes twice while I was talking. I read glowing reviews from other patients who he's helped with similar issues before booking. He did help me some and he softened up near the end. There were several other issues but I'll leave it at that, he seemed confused by the purpose of the visit. I overestimated his abilities as a professional and as a doctor.

This is from a few years ago, but still thought it was important to share:…read more Unprofessional and disorganized. My asthmatic husband went in to see Dr. Joseph McCarthy clearly stating to both doctor and staff that he needed a prescription for his asthma. "Sure, bring in your medicine and we'll get you set up." That was over 2 weeks ago. Since then: 1) The Oak Street Family Medical Staff confirmed multiple times that they sent the request for medication to the insurance company. Each time, the insurance company said they had not received anything. 2) Maybe it's the insurance company? Not likely. Every time he called in to the doctor's office, he had to describe every detail of his situation, as if NOTHING IS KEPT ON RECORD. 3) As his symptoms got worse, he called the doctor directly. "I need my medicine. Your office has told me multiple times that they have sent your authorization, but it's clearly not happening." Sorry, McCarthy says, there's nothing I can do. I'll sort it out Monday morning (they are only open Monday - Wednesday). 4) My husband ends up in the emergency room due to breathing difficulties. The following Monday, he calls in to ensure the doctor's authorization has been sent, as the doctor himself said he would do. DR. McCARTHY DID NOT KEEP HIS WORD. The day is nearly half over, and he has been on the phone back and forth with the doctor's office and insurance. Each time, the doctor's office says they are about to send the request, but they never follow through. If you take your health seriously, and want a medical staff that takes your health seriously, avoid Oak Street Family Medical.

She was not satisfied with Dr. McCarthy's poor appearance and lack of helpful medical knowledge. It was a very unpleasant visit. She was also extremely upset at the "new patient fee" that was not billable to insurance. When she got the bill it was for $148, making it the singularly most expensive trip to the Dr. someone with insurance from a school district has ever had. The above story did motivate us to NEVER visit Dr. McCarthy ever again. What motivated me to publicly complain on Yelp was that we received a letter from a collections company claiming that our bill was unpaid! I have bank records proving that Dr. McCarthy cashed my check! We just want this organization out of our life, nothing about this place is positive. Do not go here under any circumstances.
