She seemed to listen and did a good job cleaning my teeth. 2 stars is for her. My dentist smelled of private equity and a complete disinterest in people he doesn't relate to. He recommended up-charged toothpaste, and up-charged filling material after explaining basic dental hygiene before asking about my existing habits. Then gave a treatment plan with high cost and high urgency. I received a second opinion from a lower-overhead dentist who had practical equipment and no comfort menu or drinks to speak of, but the same service was offered at a much more affordable price and much of what was itemized by Holladay was included in the overall cost from a well-regarded dentist in the area. My personal cost-incurred was around 1/4 of what Holladay quoted. He knew he could have come in at 7/8 of Holladay's cost and would have won my business but he charged for what I needed and committed to monitoring the rest as they were not of immediate importance. If you drive a Range Rover, require luxury in everything you do, and enjoy lighting money on fire, I'd recommend Holladay. If you drive a Toyota, require practical, affordable dental care from someone who takes pride in providing to the majority of the population without the frills, I'd look elsewhere.

That should be enough said, but I can't help but rebut the one negative review. That was obviously a case of a mom and teenager who don't communicate well. The way I see it, they must have trusted him to do what was needed and then didn't want to pay for the work that had been done. He's honest, prices are fair, and he won't try to sell you a mouthfull of dentistry like most other dentists. He's extremely competent, diligent and caring. His injections are painless. It's all in the technique!!! He explains all you need to know, maybe more than you need to know, but I find that comforting to understand how much thought he puts into what he does and why he's doing it. Very few dentists care that much or take the time. Just because a dentist graduates dental school and passes the board exam doesn't mean he or she is all that good. I've seen plenty of mediocre dentistry and careless dentists in my day. Dr. Gatrell is a cut above the rest!

Called again after getting the surprise bill and said it was unethical to bill me for something I did not consent to on my underage child. Jamie's response was there was nothing she could do beyond taking $25 off (um... you're a privately owned office that determines your prices). She then told me there was a breakdown in communication as my daughter had been making her own appointments and bringing herself. Well, the breakdown in communication falls on Dr Gatrell and his staff. They should have contacted me to discuss what they were wanting to do and if it was okay. Again, informed consent. Instead, when she contacted me to schedule the appointment she said, "I need to schedule the 3 of you for a cleaning." How was I suppose to glean from that that only my son and I were getting the cleaning covered by insurance and my daughter was getting a $100 retainer placed? Should I not have gotten a paper with a quote, because I never did? There are still honest dentists out there, this office isn't one of them. Keep looking. I could hear him berating other patients and staff. As a type 1 diabetic I already brace for medical professionals to be misinformed and judgemental when I step into their office, and I was still so incredibly floored by how poor his bedside manner was. Even as a regular human being this man was incredibly unkind. Dentistry is already one of the most expensive and daunting forms of medical care, especially in America. There is a huge power dynamic and at no point did I feel comforted or relieved that this man was caring for me. It was also incredibly expensive and seemed very shady. For being someone who has chosen to be a carer for people in vulnerable situations it truly seems that he takes pride in creating even more barriers for patients. Very affordable (it cost a family member $410 for one filling at another dentist WITH insurance - it was less than $400 for a cleaning and three fillings at Dr Thomas with the same insurance).
