This is just a cool, kitschy, eclectic, steeped-in-local-flare-and-charm book shop. A Must Stop for anyone visiting Columbus.

My kid lives on CSU campus right by this bookshop, so I've been here a few times. The owners (I assume) are chatty and super knowledgeable about books. There's a large shelf as you enter loaded front and back with recommendations they have for a wide variety of reader types. This does make it hard to peruse that shelf quietly, BTW. There's a fair amount of White, male, heteronormative stuff on the shelf BUT he was recommending Sarah Gailey's American Hippo to a customer while I was there. (Couldn't agree more for spec fiction types). Anyway, #JudyBugsBooks is a great shop. I agree with other reviewers that it's not the cleanest. It's a books stacked in corners type of place. Drop in when you have time to browse. They also have some rare books and do book repairs. read more

Sorry, Columbus but I don't see it. I viewed Judy Bugs as a lackluster place. I didn't hang out there, but it wasn't like I really felt welcomed. The counter person didn't even acknowledge me and my roommate. I even said 'hi,' and I just got a blank stare-something I would expect from someone who works at Mickey D's, or Wal-Mart but a local place? No, thanks. I understand that local flavor goes a long way but if there isn't anything to keep me coming beyond 'Support your locals!' It's not a good enough reason, I mean if I can get the same book at a lower price at BN and get the same level of service then guess where I'm going to take my money? read more

GREAT POTENTIAL! I am always attracted to book stores and libraries. I especially love little independent stores that have a great vibe and strong sense of community. However, I like them to be very clean and very organized. This place was a bit too dusty for my taste and I could not readily identify the order of the books. I did find one Civil War book that peaked my interest but I noticed that the cover was soiled and it seemed a bit dusty. The selling price was $12.95 but when I whipped out my phone to verify the price on Amazon, I realized that I could get the brand new book for less than half of the Judy Bugs price. When it comes to hardback and reference books, I simply prefer to purchase them new. This little store has great potential but needs a bit of TLC to create a truly warm and inviting ambiance. ***3/19/17 For $3 more than one dusty and soiled book at this store, I was to get the book I wanted and another one in the Time Life Collection in new and pristine condition. Judy Bugs only gets a second star because I love books so much. I have visited small mom and pop bookstores all across the country, and this is by far the dirtiest and darkest one that I have ever been in. When I entered the store with my kids (between 8 & 14, so they know how to behave), I got the side eye from the person behind the counter. It was unnerving--I felt unwelcome. We browsed for a few minutes, but every time I pulled a book off the shelf, it left my hands dusty and dirty. I didn't stay long because honestly, I want to give my money to places that respect books enough to keep them clean. read more

I have visited Judy Bug several times over the years - it really makes me sad to see how much this place has deteriorated since my last visit. The apathetic employee behind the register barely grunted a greeting when we arrived, clearly too engrossed in his reading to be bothered. The meager inventory is cluttered, lacks variety, and desperately needs to be updated. The absence of category labels is really annoying. The only purchases that my husband and I have made here are a couple of chess tomes for his collection. I have never purchased anything else because the books are grossly overpriced. I did enjoy relaxing on the overstuffed couches scattered throughout the store while my husband browsed. read more

It's an excellent bookstore. It has free Wi-Fi, refreshments, tea and coffee if you want to hang out and figure out whether a book is appropriate for you. Alek, the owner, is a very intelligent person, mention virtually any book and he'll know ipso facto what you're talking about. You can also order books with them if you don't find them in the store. I never had any trouble there. Alek is a great conversationalist. I bought so many books there I already lost count. I have only walked by, but looking for a special book, I called them 8 times over a two day period and could not get anyone to answer the phone........ I know that it must work as sometimes it would be busy for long periods of time. No one ever answered the phone..... Never had a place just refuse to answer, maybe they have caller ID and I was not on their cool list. I will go to BandN instead or that used book store by the mall on Armour road. I'm a sucker for places like this! Small, so many books you can barely walk, dust, love it all! They even have couches! They have tons of different books for everyone's interest which is awesome. The only this is that this place is very high prices. Some of the prices make sense since a lot of the books are old and/or hard to find but for being a used book store, the other prices could come down a little bit. read more

This is easily my FAVORITE bookstore. From new to used - you will find what you're looking for and some. When I walk in this bookstore I feel a sort of magic every time - never fails. And the owner is absolutely fantastic! His reviews are 100% spot on every time - if he gives you a recommendation, take it! My family and I visit from Hawaii twice a year and we make the time to come and add to our book collection every time we visit. I hate to see a local place like this in such shambles. The way they treat their customers is dreadful and the selection is pretty lame. If you are looking for a true blue used bookstore then you found it! Happened by it one day while downtown and have recommended it to all my book lover friends. The employees are nice and the owner is so friendly but no one is "pushy." The place smells like books (a scent I wish they would bottle already!) and has couches for relaxing. The variety is present and the prices are great (about half off listed price for used). My other book lover friends have gone and love it just as much! A local little gem for sure. read more

I've been going to JudyBug's for several years, and it's a great place to hang out--especially if it's not busy. The staff--Alec and Tommy right now--are quiet, unobtrusive, and remarkably knowledgeable on lots of subjects. And very friendly. The store if full of new and used books, and therer is something for everyone. If it's not in stock, Judybug's will search the planet for what you are looking for. If a copy is availabe, Alec will find it for you--book, cd, dvd, vinyl record, probably anything else you are searching for. I don't know about an old Rolls, though. Ambiently, the place is friendly, there are coverstuffed couches and some vintage chairs for your comfort, a chessboard, and a bar with limited and wonderful desserts. Alec will fix you something from the fountain off the printed list or your specail order or he will be happy to provide his private concoction of tea or coffee. When I go to Columbus, I don't feel right if I don't go by Judybug's. read more

By far the best bookstore in Columbus--a quirky, friendly, and relaxing place to hang out. The coffee is also fantastic. Their strongest points are customer service and book recommendations. The proprietor, Alek Ansley, is very well-read. If you tell him a few books you like, he is incredibly good at recommending books you will enjoy. I read a lot--more than most people I know--and he's suggested lots of books to me that I had never heard of, but really enjoyed. They may not have everything you're looking for in stock, but can order anything. I noticed some people had a negative customer service experience. They were most likely visiting at one of the few times when Alek wasn't there--he greets everyone who comes into the shop, and is very friendly & polite. Hope the negative reviews will not deter anyone from visiting JudyBug's .... it's one of my favorite places in Columbus, and the customer service & sheer knowledge of books are *very* different from what you get at big businesses. Also: I'm pretty sure it's the only place in Columbus that deals in rare & collectible books. Out of my price-range, personally, but they have some great stuff. Love this place. Small but PLENTY to check out and spend money on. I only wish it was open a little later because it is downtown.

How the F&%$ could anyone not like this place. They will get you any book you ask for just in print or out for fifty years. After a while they just buy books for you and hand them to you when you walk in saying "I know you will like this so I got I for you" and 99% of the time they are right.
