My biggest regret since moving out of NYC is that I haven't found anyone who does as good a job as she. But I make sure to schedule an appt whenever I'm in town. Each time I go to see Jun the price is never the same. It goes up and down and whatever she wants to charge. Minimum $100 for credit card charge and if you charge, she charges tax! So bring cash. Jun always work on more than one person at a time. Cut one person's half head, then start on another person's highlight and back to cutting the rest of the head!?! Her cutting style is to cut after blow dry. It always come out uneven. I asked for my hair to layered. The left and right layers are uneven. I showed it to her and she just re-cut. I waited for 2 hours and she rushed through my head in less than 10 minutes. No point of making an appointment because you still go by who walks in first and who knows her more. Prices fluctuates depending on how much she feels like charging. Different prices every time I go. Gossip about other customers with other customers. Very unprofessional. No one is allowed to touch my hair, except Jun. I've been coming to have Jun cut my hair for more than three years now and my mom even tagged along and ditched her old salon to become a regular here as well. The wait, I can agree on, can be dreadful sometimes but that's because I rarely make appointments. You MUST make an appointment - so please don't complain if people come in later and go before you because 99% of the time they have appointments. Since going to Jun's, I no longer have to walk out with my hair tied up shamelessly because she cuts my hair the way I like it. I always look forward to the scalp massages because they are so relaxing. However, the wait can be a little long afterwards because Jun is a one-woman army of hairstylists. I have never seen her sit down because she's constantly moving around...I don't know how she does it! Wonderful person to talk to, so your "painful" haircut will go smoothly. "It's just hair." This, from a card-carrying hairdressing salon owner. It's a statement that might freak some cashed-up coiffsters right out, and put others at ease - like me. After umming and ahhing at spending $65-100+ on a trim in Manhattan I thought, there must be a cheaper, yet choosier, way. I mean, look at our Asian hair - straight as the highway to hell and in any color you like as long as it's black - what's so hard about that? I decided to try the well-reviewed-considering (see yelp.com) Jun Salon in Chinatown. Jun is an unpretentious gal who reminds me of one of my favorite gal cousins. She says she use to do $105+ Uptown cuts before she went cheap'n'choosy - and many of her clients followed her, not minding having to pick their way along the cracked and cabbage-strewn sidewalks of Chinatown for their discount 'do. There is something twee (we use the word 'daggy' downunder) about China town decor - the surgery-grade fluorescent lighting, hard white tiles, red lanterns and Taiwanese auto mechanic's calendars featuring off-duty Singapore girls ... yet as a Chinese descendent I find it strangely comforting as well. Be prepared for a super lengthy shampoo and scalp massage. We're talking two different kinds of shiatsu and several sudses - "to relax the hair", said my attendant. Oh my god. Heaven. And to prove it, my movie got an inordinate number of hits on YouTube right after I posted it, from the shampoo kinky brigade. Results vary - my last cut was a disaster, and required styling with a brush and hair dryer, things I have no patience or room for when on the road. It was layeres and ended up like hippy dippy mama. "You need wash and go," said Jun, showing me a bob style that was long at the sides and shorter at the back, exposing, dare I say, a little neck, "to make you look taller," she said. When I hesitated, she said, "it's just hair. It will grow." A bit of Zen and the art of pageboy maintenance never went astray ... I REALLY hated my hair after walking out of the salon...I'm okay with it now after bringing the natural volume back into it, but I wish I had just forked over the extra cash and went somewhere else... If you like pin-straight hair that lays completely flat atop your head with no movement at all - just like a sheet of paper - then this place is for you. Otherwise, steer clear. Scalp massage: meh. It felt like a regular wash - just took longer. Haircut: They didn't look over my hair to see how it lays before cutting it!! Even the best hairstylists in the world take a minute or two to make sure they really understand your hair before diving right in!! They didn't use heat protectant spray/serum before heat styling my hair - twice. Didn't ask where I normally part my hair. Cut my hair shorter than asked for (Why does every place do this?! When I say I want so-and-so cut off, that doesn't mean cut it at that length when it's wet - because hair shrinks when it's dry. Plus, hairstylists always end up having to trim a little more to make sure it's all even.) They also charged tax ON TOP of the tip, instead of pre-tip, the way everyone is supposed to. I guess they prefer pin-straight hair with no volume or movement -- is that an Asian hair salon thing?? - because that's how it was cut and styled. If you STILL decide to come here, at least ask for the cost before sitting down -- it greatly varies beyond what's posted. I'm so disappointed because I read so many amazing reviews here! Good value - good cut. Me = totally phobic about cutting my hair, even in a place I have been going to for YEARS. so, for me to even try someplace new is amazing. For me to LOVE it is a miracle. WHY GO = my daughter is Chinese and goes to school on Mott, so I went in there to cut her hair. Then, My sister read about the place on Yelp and she went. Then, finally, I took the plunge and got a conservative cut. Then a more layered look, then my color done last week. All I can say is WOW. WHERE BEFORE = Aveda, really good, crazy expensive but actually NOT as good as here for 1/3 of the price. Insane. WHY NOT = if you are in a hurry... it's just not gonna happen. I'm sorry, this salon almost made my friend cry. Sure it was pretty crowded, however, I dont understand why they treated her pretty badly. 11:30 both of us came in 12:10 both of us started shampoo 12:35 I had my haircut 1:15 I finished my haircut and turned to my friend, whose hair hasnt been cut yet and is now DRY. 1:15 we ask Jun when she'll have her hair cut. She said "maybe 15 mins or something like that." 1:45 we decide to cancel her cut. But when she said, "Ok. Go. 12 bucks on shampoo." My jaw effing dropped. They completely ignored her for an hour. Sure we didnt make an appointment, but they're walk-in system is screwy. Even the other people who came in late (they stated they were walk-ins btw) had their hair cut before her. =/ read more

I should comment much earlier. It was terrible experience. I went twice total. Both with appointment. First time, I waited almost one hour and a so so cut. Price was competitive. Second time, she let me waited hours before I asked her. She was so proud to tell me that she did not even know when is my turn and I had to wait. Even worse was that when I was waiting, I had to listen to her talking to her friend customer about another customer and how she hated that customer and wondered when the customer would die and how nice the customer's husband was... The owner, jun is a one woman worker basically. She answers the phone calls, greets whoever walks into the door, collects the money, makes sure her two hair washers are doing their job, and styles and cuts 6 others pretty much at the same time. She does a good job cutting hair and the price is decent $22 for wash and cut), but this is a competitive price all around c-town. The prices on the window is not updated so make sure u go in to ask the current price. I was a bit annoyed b/c she was so distracted with other customers, and when the phone rang, she would fetch it, leaving my hair have soaking wet and flipped to my face. Then I got really turned off when she placed the flat iron on the floor and then put it on my hair. WTF!?! The place is like a cage..only fits 5 or 6 customers, so u need to make an appointment. Hi Candice Agree, not only is the Salon's walk-in system broken, so is the appointment system! Something very similar happened to me, although I made an appointment days in advance and asked for Jun to cut my hair, Jun still made me wait over 2 hours. plus was extremely unfriendly, even borderline aggressive. On the previous visit, her co-worker cut my hair and I wasn't satisfied with the cut. So this time, I wanted to try out a haircut by Jun. At least 5 people who came later than me, got their hair done first. Finally, Jun ordered one of the boys to wash my hair and made me wait with wet hair for another 1 and a half hours. After 2 hours of sitting in a confined space with loud chatter; mainly Jun chatting to her customers, she dumps her co-worker to cut my hair. I politely reminded Jun I had the appointment with her, she seemed a bit angry and started chatting to another customer in chinese for at least another 15 mins. Finally Jun cut my hair which took less than 10 mins. The haircut is below average, definitely not worth the wait. Also I found it a bit irritating that Jun didn't bother mentioning about the price increase from $22+tip to $25+tip at the cash register. She just said 25$ and couldn't wait for me to pay up. AVOID AT ALL COST!! DO NOT go to her please. She does not listen to ANY instructions, dismisses your comments, and gave me a HORRIBLE hair cut that is going to take forever to grow out. I combed almost the whole of Chinatown last weekend to locate a hair salon I could trust. From the small dodgy ones that even my late grandma would never trust to do a granny perm to the large ones hoping their minimalist interior design and your blind faith would be enough to make you drop some huge bucks. C'mon, when in Chinatown one is obviously looking for Cheap and Chic. (of course, some would just settle for the former alone). When I was just about to give up, I found myself peering into a cosy, 6 seater of a salon that looked busy. That's a good sign. I don't wanna go into a place where no one else brings their business, duh. Then I looked closer, and found that the decor was simple but reflects taste. I ain't gonna let someone with no taste near my hair, man. The clincher was a fashion magazine article pasted on the window. It was a makeover that Jun did for a magazine reader. Yes, I hit the jackpot. When I went in and told her that I wanted a trim and new bangs, she promptly said $22. OMG. I hit the jackpot AND won the lotto! I then got the best shampoo and head massage that was worth more than the sum of what I was about to pay. I then got a blow dry, a trim, my new bangs, and my hair flat ironed. I walked in looking like a rat, and left the salon feeling like I was Anne Hathaway in the Devil Wears Prada (after she got stylish, of course). About me: Early 20s, female, Asian with thin stick straight hair. I'm also extremely picky about where I get my hair cut because sadly I have had my share of let downs at what I consider to be expensive places ($70, though I guess that's cheap for NYC). I hardcore yelp-researched different places, like Hair Mates, Hair Kuwayama (which i've actually been to before), Hoshi Coupe, and Sei Tomoko Salon. I was prepared to drop up to $80 on a cut (hopefully including tip) because I was desperate to get rid of my painfully boring hair style that was the result of a $65 dollar cut in April. Anyway, Jun Salon was not even on my radar, but I was getting antsy with my hair. I had to run some errands in Chinatown, and afterward I decided I was just going to suck it up and get a haircut. I asked someone for directions to Pell St (barbershop alley) so I could just get it over with, and some well-intentioned old lady totally misdirected me and I ended up wandering aimlessly down Mott St. There I came across a tiny, bright, clean-looking salon staffed by good-looking Asian people with a diverse clientèle. I checked the prices in the window and to my complete astonishment it was only $22 for a wash, cut, and blow dry. TWENTY TWO DOLLARS! Unheard of. I had a good feeling about the place so I walked in. Turns out, I was deceived about the services they offered. "Wash" actually meant 20+ minute shampoo, conditioner, some other random mysterious rinseable hair treatment substance process complete with an amazing scalp massage. "Cut" meant my stylist, Jay, having amazing attention to detail and working on my hair for close to an hour. "Dry" meant a 45 minute blowout and style. I think Jay must be a super perfectionist because he really, really worked on my hair. BEST DECEIT EVER! I brought in some pictures to show the stylist and he was very honest with me in telling me how they would work with my hair. He also made sure it was okay that he was going to cut so many layers (the boring haircut I got from the other place probably made me look like I was really conservative with my hair, when it's actually not the case). He checked all of the lengths with me, and there were no surprises. And the end result was seriously amazing. I looked like a f***ing rockstar. But by rockstar, I mean a star of some sort of taiwanese soap opera. My thin hair had full volume and the ends of my hair were curled in a perfect way, without any curlers (magic? i dont know). The August humidity and general Canal St pollution affected my hair after about an hour, but the cut still looks fab. I'm definitely going back again... under $40 after tip? At my old job, I had a coworker (who became my friend) who was always dressed in cute, trendy clothes and always had a great haircut. One day, I asked her where she got her 'do, expecting to hear of some trendy spot downtown. Needless to say, when she told me she got her hair cut in Chinatown and that it was very inexpensive, i was shocked! She gave me Jun's light pink business card, and I immediately put it right into my wallet for future use. I've had a few too many bad experiences with bad hair cuts ((IE: I'm in eighth grade, about to go to a middle school dance, and my "stylist" of the evening (I've never been one for hair salon loyalty due to situations like these) insists that face-framing angles should be cut like a stair case. The end.)) so, I was a little hesitant to get my haircut in an area of town that I am embarrassingly unfamiliar with (it's great - check it out!). Today, after looking at myself in the mirror in my place-of-employment's ladies room, I decided that I needed my hair cut - pronto - and didn't want to spend NYC salon prices. I walked over to my desk, opened my wallet, and took out Jun's pink card. Well, I just got home from Jun's and I can honestly say that it was an amazing experience that I would recommend to all! The only reason that I dinged a star off of the rating is because the brushes looked a little bit dirty. But then again, I got a rock star hair cut for $30, so I'm not complaining. Next time, I'll just bring my own brush. Jun is a lovely woman and the staff is very pleasant. She had to run to a parent teacher conference, so she couldn't cut my hair (even though I made an appointment, but it all worked out alright!). Being Asian, I've always had my haircut at Asian salons, so I can't go comparing this to your $100+ experiences. However, for $22+tip, I'd say it was a great deal, particularly for New York. I called ahead to make sure they were open Thanksgiving weekend and gave her a time I might drop in around, but I didn't make a formal appointment as I didn't know how fast my errands would go. I ended up dropping in around 4, an hour after the 2-3 pm I'd told Jun on the phone. A white guy walked in *right* before I did so I was ushered to a seat and given a magazine to read while he got his hair washed (there are only two shampoo stations and another girl was already there.) The scalp massage that I got was nice but nothing to rave about--better than a regular salon, worse than what I've gotten in Taiwan. I'm not sure if I got short-changed or whether the guy got long-changed (?) but I climbed into the shampoo chair a couple minutes after he did and got out about a minute before he did. My hairstylist was Nick, a quiet guy who spent nearly an hour concentrating on my hair. I'm okay with stylists who don't chat because I feel weird saying "No, I don't have a boyfriend" to everything in the salon, plus I get the sense they're actually paying attention to what they're doing. He combed, cut, measured, cut some more, trimmed, layered, blew dry, looked at it, cut MORE, then commented: "You have a lot of hair." Hahaha. Not the first time I've heard this, but entertaining to me nonetheless. Nick gave me a great haircut with bangs that actually SWOOP the way they were always supposed to, and thinned out my super thick hair without making it look fobby (always a concern for me). The staff got my coat that they had taken for me when I entered, and I emerged a happy happy girl. Basically: Good value for your price. Great if you're used to Asian salons. Still good if you're not. Beware where you put your bag down as mine got dusted with cut hair (my cut hair, but still). Jun is experienced hairstylist and also very friendly, but she is a busy woman! I sat in the salon for about 5 hours to get my hair permed straight, so I was able to observe a lot. The salon is small - maybe about 8 seats. It is just Jun and 2 other assistants. Jun multi-tasks a lot and is able to delegate her work well. You get a special discount for being/speaking Chinese. I think I paid about $180, which is a pretty good price. It also comes with future credit for a free haircut, and 2 hair treatment sessions, which she gives you on a card at the end. With that said, she also had a lot of non-asian clientèle in there as well. Jun studied at Bumble and Bumble so she brought over some of those clients in transition. She knows how to work white hair, so for those who are skeptical, don't worry. The haircuts came out very nice. The one thing that I was dissatisfied with is that one of the assistants worked on me the entire time instead of Jun. My straightening process is lengthy and meticulous so I understand why. Though my hair turned out straight for the most part, it definitely could have been more straight especially on the ends and I know this from past experience. I didn't go back to complain because my hair is decently straight to begin with so I didn't mind too much that not every strand was pin straight. However, if I was someone that had frizzy/curly hair, this would not fly. If you are particular about your hair, make sure you ask that Jun works on your hair. Weird how she charges different prices for different people?? When I asked her, she said the price went up. Ive paid $25-$28. She just charged my friend $32, so make sure you ask before you get it done. Always try to go in with an appmt. One time I waited 4 hours on a weekday early afternoon. I was patient & said she could let 1 person in front of me, but I think she thought it meant I had all the time in the world, haha Sometimes she goes a great haircut, sometime not. Last time I went, I asked to cut all my split ends, still had quite a few when I left. Felt like she rushed thru my hair way too quick. If you don't mind waiting, and passing the time by reading old magazines, then take a seat. Jun is really great and friendly. I think she tries really hard to remember all her customers names. She takes the time to listen to what you want, and gives suggestions, but is not overly pushy. She's also really fast at cutting your hair, but at the same time she doesn't make you feel like you're being rushed out the door. The cut was $19 (w/o tip) and she blow dried and flat ironed my hair too! This is remarkable to me as many salons in my hometown in Westchester charge extra for a blow out...ugh.... I would definitely make an appointment, otherwise you may be waiting for a very long time. Most patrons didn't seem to mind though as they all pretty much knew the drill and were regulars. When hunting for a salon in New York, we looked to Yelp of course. Oddly enough, back in SF, we used to go to Jun's beauty salon so my husband and I thought...hey why not. Let's try New York Jun! Yeah for yelp and yea for Jun. She's conveniently located right off Mott Street. She is EXTREMELY busy on the weekends so anticipate the wait. Unfortunately during the weekdays, we both work too late to get a cut so weekends it is. Her assistants give really GREAT hair/head massage. It's built in as part of the cut and to be honest, I think it might be provided for the sake of spreading out the time so Jun can get things done. Cuz man she is sooo busy. I love it though, now that we're regulars, she knows us by name, she understands what hair looks good on our face shape and God Bless her, she listens to my husbands stories even though she's super busy. I went to Jun's almost 3 years ago, and I thought I would never go back because of how I was treated, but I'm reconsidering since it was the best haircut I ever got for the price (or even double the price). During my first visit, I asked her to recommend a cut. She dropped a magazine into my lap, told me to choose, and was about to help out another customer before I blurted out Victoria Beckham's name. She looked satisfied, and in 15-20 minutes, she did an amazing job even though her manner was abrasive. I've been to some higher end places since then, but the lot of them are ill-equipped for Asian hair. It's a real testament to her skill that even after my hair grew out, it looked great. I highly recommend making reservations, I walked in after 5 pm on a weekday - bad idea. I will be going back, I just hope that she'll be much more patient with me if I choose the right time. read more

I was introduced to Jun's Hair Salon through one of my friends about two and a half years ago and I have been a fan of her/her associate's since then. I have been to many other salons including high end salons in the city, and absolutely no one gets it like Jun does. They always cut it exactly the way I want it and I always walk out the salon happy. I get many compliments for my hair and it's all thanks to Jun! I bring my mom as well as my out of town friends who visit the city and they all love her. It is a bit inconvenient to get to her salon because it's deep inside Chinatown and esp if you are coming from upper Manhattan like myself it can be a hassle. But I always make a trip out of it, get my hair done and get great food afterwards. Completely worth it. One thing to keep in mind is that make an appointment and be there on time. Even with an appointment sometimes the wait can be long. The salon is very busy but they are efficient. A bit of annoyance you might experience by waiting is nothing compared to how happy you will be with your hair! Oh! And you can't beat this price either! read more

This is where I go to get my haircuts. And just to let you know where I stand, I like a good haircut but I'm also probably less obsessive with my hair than most other girls. Definitely more on the "It's just hair" end than anything else. That being said, I think this place is a great value if you're not in a hurry, and ok with a slightly crowded space. I've been here a few times where I've waited for an hour and a half to get my haircut, but that's just because I didn't know any better. Go at 10 in the morning when they open, so clients haven't been piling up and call her for an appointment, don't just walk in. The fluctuating haircut prices are pretty funny, mine cost somewhere between $21 to 24 dollars, still a steal, even on the upper end. Jun definitely knows what she's doing, I've seen countless people walking out with great, expensive looking cuts that wouldn't be out of place in a fancier salon. Her staff people are sweet, always at the ready with the latest gossip magazines to while away the time and the shampoos are worth the $20-odd dollars by itself. P.S. BLOW DRY, CUT, HAIR WASH & TREATMENT I really wanted to give Jun Hair Salon a 4 STAR RATING but my overall experience moved me down to 3. I hope my next visit will change for the better. I have been going to their Salon for about 3 years. My friend recommended this place. My first experience was great. I had a treatment, complimentary trim, and I did not feel rushed. But the experiences after were just ok. It was weird how the owner charged different prices for different people and every visit with the same hair length so make sure you ask before you get it done. SHAMPOO WASH Salon gets a 4 star for shampoo wash. They took their time and It included a little hair massage. Surprisingly, it's very rare to find in Chinatown and it is standard in Guangzhou, China. CUTS Most Chinatown salons does Razar cuts except this place. Razar cut dries out the ends so it will appear as if you did not have a cut for a very long time. I've never had Cuts here but I've watched others get theirs. You can be assure that the owner will not screw up your haircut. BLOW DRY Stylist never asked how I wanted my hair blow dried so they always straightens it. TREATMENT Treatment did give moisture. The two things that I was dissatisfied was being mislead about the treatment package promotion. The first visit process was not consistence with the other visits. Prices drastically changed over the years for shampoo washes from $12-$20. It totaled to be more expensive than I had bargained for. If I had known, I would have selected a cheaper package. Jun Salon is Chinese owned but caters to both Americans and Chinese Clients. Appointments for cuts are recommended or else you will waste your time. read more

I first started going to Jun's a couple of years back. Back then, she charged $12 for a haircut and blowout and she even straightens your hair. Recently I've started to notice the price of my haircuts creeping up. They started out at $12...then went to $18...then $24. I realize that $24 is still dirt cheap in Manhattan, but what gives with the slowly climbing prices?? However, I will still go to Jun's because quite frankly that woman (and her assistants) just know HOW to cut hair. Well, I've always had a good experience with Jun. I do have long and easily straightened hair (Jun likes to blow it dry before cutting which is unconventional in my experience), which many reviewers below say might be her strong suit. **Update: I have been going to Jun Salon for three years. She is amazing, knows me by name, addresses me warmly and treats me with the respect and friendliness of a regular patron. I have had Jun do MANY different things with my hair. From long hair care, to cutting short, to pixie length, a bob, and now even some wild, edgy cuts. I've always loved her work. I also appreciate that she will tell me when I am trying to go for something that either wont go well with my hair texture, or will require a lot of work from me (which I am not willing to put in). Jun is absolutely an master of her art! I've never had to deal with crazy waits, so I'm not sure what that is all about, but I also have freedom on off-hours to go in when no one is there. It's unfortunate that so many have had sucha bad experience. But you have to admit that a long wait says something about the quality of her work. If that many people go there causing such waits, there is probably a reason. Jun has always been very friendly and open. Went here today at around 3PM and asked for a trim. Got a 10 minute hair wash/massage which was wonderful. Then Jun cut my hair, I asked her for a trim which was really good. Then she proceeded to ask me how I wanted my hair styled straight or with a bit of volume and I requested with a bit of volume. The total came out to $30. I've been going to Jun for a few years and have been going back because she does a good job, she's very friendly and her prices are very reasonable. I think my haircuts for my long hair are about $28? I don't know where else I can find such a great deal. Her salon is small and if you want her to cut your hair, be prepared to wait for her to get to you, even if you have an appt and especially during busy hours. I've also had my hair straightened there and below I see a comment from someone saying how the assistant straightened her hair instead of Jun. I can understand her dissatisfaction but at the same time, I've had my hair straightened at many places and it is always a junior person that does it. When you start off at a salon, I think the first skill you learn is to straighten and color hair and then you finally get to actually cut hair. Since it is such a laborious and time consuming process, it would make more financial sense to have a junior person do it. By the time Jun does it, she could've serviced 5 other customers. I've learned that you have to tell them specifically what to be careful of when they straighten your hair because once you get it straightened, I don't think it's wise to go back again to get it redone because it is very damaging to your hair and it can even have a reverse effect and make it wavy/curly. I make sure they don't start too close from the root, otherwise it's going to look too straight and tapered to your head. I wanted it to look more natural so they start further from the root. Also, they can control the level of the formula that they apply to your hair to your desired effect. Sometimes I just get my bangs straightened since the rest of my hair seems pretty straight and Jun gives me a very good deal for it. I've seen people come in and get frustrated with the wait but at the same time, kind of feel bad for Jun because everyone wants her to cut their hair but there is only one of her! read more

The only thing is..be prepared for a WAIT.. even if you have an appointment... just clear your schedule, bring a book, bring a days ration of food.. but be prepared.
