Filet with mashed potatoes, carrots and I think a juniper berry sauce. Delicious!

Excellent ambiance, service and food! For a unique dining experience, check out The Juniper at The Vertex Sky Bar in The Alex Johnson Hotel.

Rooftop restaurant We sat in small room overlooking Rapid City. Great cocktails and food. Attentive service. Very nice dinner on our last night in Rapid City.

The ambiance was nice regardless of the weather. We went once in the rain then back in the sun. Servers and bartenders friendly and accommodating. Cool signature drinks and amazing charcuterie. Don't miss this one.

A few from the top after a nice rain storm.

Stayed at the Alex Johnson for a night in August. This entitled us to free admittance to the Sky Bar. A couple of brews by the fire was nice. The playlist out on the patio included "Back on '74" by Jungle which will always be synonymous with this trip.

...photo after my first couple of bites. Petite Filet with blackberry gastrique! Yes, it works!

Have the petite fillet here, outstanding!I really enjoyed the blackberry gastrique that was served underneath my steak. Vegetables were perfect. Mashed potatoes were total comfort food nicely done.

Met a local at a nearby restaurant and he recommended this roof top bar as a must see. I'm so glad we went because the service, view, drinks and history were phenomenal. View would be better at night. It's on the 10th floor and you need a keycard to get to that level. In front of the elevator is a collage of all the past famous guests. We got an old fashion, Heather Hendrick's and a mocktail for my mom. The mocktail was made with raspberry. Heather Hendrick's had gin, elderflower and Prosecco. Shout out to Brandon, the manager who made our entire time unforgettable.

Food, service, and atmosphere was perfect for a Monday dinner date. Wine selection is amazing.

Perfect for a classy night! Excellent service, and an amazing view. Food is thoughtfully prepared and presented. Delicious flavors- no wonder The Alex Johnson got this restaurant! Try the gluten free/dairy free bread loaf. It tastes like heaven and you'd never guess it was without those ingredients. The charcuterie seems pricey at $40, but when it arrives it's worth every cent. This board has high end ingredients that you just can't find anywhere else in Rapid. And when you're done, go outside to Vertex for an after dinner drink and a stunning view of the entire city! If you run into Richard, he's the nicest, most helpful concierge anywhere. Plus, he knows the area really well, and has outstanding suggestions. Can't wait to go back!

Nice views of downtown rapid city especially during sunset. The food was pretty good but the prices were expensive for their size. Our party ended up sharing the dishes and having a bite of each. Our server was really nice and reminded us of Ed Sheeran. If you don't stay in the hotel, then you need to get a day pass which is not applied to the dinner. Since we called ahead and mentioned a bachelorette they comped it. We just had to pick it up at the front desk prior to going up the elevator. Fun fact. We did not know this hotel was haunted prior to dining and had an interesting dinner reading ghost stories. The front desk has a book with stories from previous guests with their strange encounters.

Decent amount of filling. Main complaint is that it is billed w Reuben filling but very little corned beef -- a few diced pieces and some halves seemed to have none. For wings you get 8 traditional or 19 bonus per order. I got the traditional with watermelon jalapeño wet sauce. You get 8 nice plump drums and the sauce is sticky and sweet but not too sweet and spicy but not too spicy. Cant really detect a distinct watermelon flavor. Still good.

We went inside and while there were tables available, many were still dirty and stayed that way during the duration of our meal. Not a great look for the restaurant. We started the fancy fried pickles and chislic. The fried pickles were different with the prosciutto and mozzarella cheese, but we still enjoyed them. The chislic was tough/chewy and not as good as Thirsty's next door. My husband and I split the buffalo meatloaf. The meatloaf was dry, but I enjoyed the overall flavor. Overall, I was not impressed with this restaurant and was disappointed with service and how the meals were cooked at Murphy's. We just had better food during our trip, so it's hard to recommend this one.

This restaurant was one I found during a trip to Rapid City, SD and through YELP, so shout out to…read moreYELP. This is very much a diner style restaurant in the very best sense of the word, "DINER." The night I dined here, it was somewhat after the usual dinner rush, so the crowds were gone and the hostess led me to a corner booth near the back of the restaurant and handed me a menu. Like many diners you may have eaten at, the menu at COLONIAL HOUSE is huge. As I get older, huge menus are becoming more intimidating because they offer a large volume of selections that you have to choose from while a server is waiting (sometimes not all that patiently). That having been said, there is enough variety on the menu here that if you can't find something you'd like, you are probably a very picky eater. One surprise and also an intimidating one was the humongous portions that are delivered when your plate arrives. I knew immediately that I would not be able to finish the meal and resolved not to try and ask for a take-out box once I ate what I could finish. My dinner (what I managed to eat was excellent) and the server had no problem providing me with a take-out box. The food kept well in my hotel's room fridge and reheated well the next day for lunch. The baked products at COLONIAL HOUSE were a feast for the eyes and I ordered a piece of strawberry shortcake to take with me back to my hotel. Mouthwatering delight! If you are visiting Rapid City and want to completely SKIP over the far too numerous chain restaurants in the area and get far better food brought to you by servers who actually seem to like their jobs and the reputation of their employer, look no further than COLONIAL HOUSE. Just make sure you come with a completely empty stomach and a big appetite.

We started our evening at Sear Steakhouse with some excellent drinks. The thyme mocktail was crisp…read moreand refreshing, and my husband's old-fashioned was fragrant and well-balanced, complete with a perfect bada bing cherry. His only note was a preference for a single large ice cube rather than crushed, but overall the bar clearly knows what it's doing. The appetizers set a great tone. Warm sourdough was fresh and comforting. I enjoyed the bright, crisp house salad, while my husband's pumpkin soup was silky, savory, and perfectly seasonal. We both ordered the 7-ounce filet mignon, and the kitchen truly delivered! His medium-rare was tender and juicy with a beautiful sear, and my medium-well was still succulent--proof of precise cooking. They have an outstanding variety of cool, reasonably priced side dishes. My husband was excited about the Queen's honey carrots which were tender and flavorful (though the honey glaze was very subtle) and the creamy mashed potatoes that are part of the steak dish, were nicely executed. I didn't realize my filet came with mashed potatoes underneath, so I ordered a loaded, baked potato as my side, and ended up with extra potato (which I'm not complaining about whatsoever lol). We also enjoyed the whiskey cream sauce with mushrooms, which added a gentle smoky creamy richness, and the onion soubise, which was pure sweet comfort. Dessert was a highlight, as we celebrated my husband's birthday - we ordered all three featured desserts: The crème brûlée had a perfectly crackled top and smooth vanilla bean custard, the flourless chocolate dessert was deeply rich with espresso notes, and the butter cake was the total star - warm, moist, and decadently buttery. Each dessert was excellent in its own way, but that perfectly sinful butter cake stole the show! The atmosphere was inviting--warm wood tones, comfortable booths, well-balanced lighting, and enough TVs near the bar to keep my sports fan husband happy. Service was friendly and pleasant, though we found ourselves wishing for a bit more attentiveness. With a very quiet dining room, very early in the evening (we had a 4 PM reservation), there were moments when water refills lagged and opportunities for wine suggestions went unoffered (and we were definitely wanting to order some red with our steaks, but gave up because by the time there was an opportunity, we were finished with our steaks). We also briefly looked into the small private dining room on our way through the bar, and while we were greeted politely by one of the employees who was sitting in there, it felt like they missed the perfect opportunity to highlight the space for potential events. That said, nothing detracted significantly from the experience--it was simply a matter of polish. A touch more proactive engagement could elevate an already strong offering into something exceptional. Overall, Sear Steakhouse delivered an enjoyable and memorable evening. The food, drinks, and desserts are clearly strengths, and with just a little added focus on service flow and guest engagement, this restaurant has all the makings of a true standout in Rapid City. We look forward to returning and trying new things!

I'm really torn on this review because I've only been to Sear Steakhouse twice, and the experiences…read morewere completely different. The first visit was for a work event in the back room (not sure if that made a difference), and it was outstanding. The food was cooked to perfection--my steak literally melted in my mouth, and the sides were hot and delicious. I couldn't stop raving about it afterward. The second visit, after talking it up to my family, was a letdown. They were busy, and maybe that played a role, but it just wasn't the same. My steak was mediocre, and my husband was genuinely confused why I had claimed it was one of the best steaks I'd had in a long time. Unfortunately, when it comes to restaurants, the bad tends to outweigh the good. We haven't been back, and I can't justify the price tag when there are other great steak options in town. I know places can have off days, and maybe that's what happened--but I'm not willing to return to find out.
