This restaurant was one I found during a trip to Rapid City, SD and through YELP, so shout out to YELP. This is very much a diner style restaurant in the very best sense of the word, "DINER." The night I dined here, it was somewhat after the usual dinner rush, so the crowds were gone and the hostess led me to a corner booth near the back of the restaurant and handed me a menu. Like many diners you may have eaten at, the menu at COLONIAL HOUSE is huge. As I get older, huge menus are becoming more intimidating because they offer a large volume of selections that you have to choose from while a server is waiting (sometimes not all that patiently). That having been said, there is enough variety on the menu here that if you can't find something you'd like, you are probably a very picky eater. One surprise and also an intimidating one was the humongous portions that are delivered when your plate arrives. I knew immediately that I would not be able to finish the meal and resolved not to try and ask for a take-out box once I ate what I could finish. My dinner (what I managed to eat was excellent) and the server had no problem providing me with a take-out box. The food kept well in my hotel's room fridge and reheated well the next day for lunch. The baked products at COLONIAL HOUSE were a feast for the eyes and I ordered a piece of strawberry shortcake to take with me back to my hotel. Mouthwatering delight! If you are visiting Rapid City and want to completely SKIP over the far too numerous chain restaurants in the area and get far better food brought to you by servers who actually seem to like their jobs and the reputation of their employer, look no further than COLONIAL HOUSE. Just make sure you come with a completely empty stomach and a big appetite. read more

This is clearly an updated Denny's, it's clean, spacious, and offers plenty of tables. The menu is great, especially for breakfast and lunch. The food came out quickly and was delicious. However, I did have a couple of concerns. My cup wasn't clean, and the waitress handed me my straw by touching the part that goes into the drink, which felt unsanitary. Soups are amazing and bread is great. Bakers show up at 2:00am to start baking fresh bread, pies, and deliciousness. Love the freezers at the front for take home. Full turkey dinners, pot pies, soups, bread, desert etc. Bad side, the prices have gone up drastically in the past coupe of weeks. Soup, salad and bread special is over $16 now. Crazy. Burgers are all over $20 each. The menu is so overly priced it is shocking for a place of this class. Kind of like a higher end (large) coffee shop with a small bar. They are always really kind to customers here and have some of the best food in town. It's often packed. Miss their old location, and the memories with it. The new location is less cozy, but it's easier to get a table for dining in. Definitely get a slice of pie. I didn't think I even liked pie until I tried theirs! read more

First our service was AMAZING!! She was so kind and chatted with us for so long. Made us feel so welcome and happy that we were there. The diner has the cutest vibe and was very nice and clean. If you're in the mood for food that reminds you of a cozy home cooked meal, then this is the place for you! The gravy is the best gravy we have ever tasted and every baked item that we tried was delicious. The challah bread was soft and buttery and the apple pie hit the spot at the end of the meal. We even grabbed a scotcheroo and caramel roll to take back to the hotel because they looked way too good to pass on. What a pleasant surprise! We decided to try the Colonial House mainly due to the location right next to where we were staying. It was just two of us and we visited on a Tuesday evening. I was curious when we walked in and saw they had baked goods like pies and pastries available to purchase and walk out with. There were also some amazing looking desserts on view. We were greeted and quickly seated by the host and started perusing the menu. Our waiter came by momentarily to take our drink order. I ordered the Bloody Mary, and it was really good! Garnished w/bacon, pickled asparagus, pickle slices and fresh celery. I was really pleased with the flavors. The menu has quite a few choices. I ended up going with the flat iron steak and my partner got the walnut salad. Our waiter brought a cranberry bread for us to snack on. We weren't expecting that and it was really good. The bread was a little sweet like Hawaiin bread and loaded with craisins. Very fresh and tasty. When my steak arrived, our waiter suggested I cut into it to ensure it was cooked to my satisfaction and it definitely was. I was also pleasantly surprised that it was served with a bulb of roasted garlic. I squeezed it on my steak and dipped my fries in it and was really impressed with that extra touch. There were also sprigs of thyme. Not necessary but pretty cool. Overall, I was really impressed with the service and all the extra unexpected touches that made this a really good experience. This was recommended by our hotel staff when I asked about breakfast. I love a local place over a chain and I was dissuaded from the IHOP as well. I had a nice breakfast of steak and eggs. The coffee was wonderful without the need for sugar or cream. A local told us to try Colonial House. So glad we listened! I had the Blue Walnut salad with Salmon. It was loaded with cranraisins, candied walnuts, blue cheese crumbles, and bacon bits. Plus a small but absolutely perfectly cooked grilled salmon. I had it with Raspberry vinegarette. YUM!!! My husband had the bacon cheeseburger with fries. He said it was very good too. Coke products and full bar. Clean. Friendly staff. The desserts looked amazing but we didn't try them. Today was day 24 of our 30-day trip. Early dinner back from Custer State Park and Devils Tower. Picked this spot off my Yelp search - I'm always looking to support local, independent businesses. A good selection from the different sections on their menu. Prices seemed on the high side, however I imagine the tourism Rapid City gets (SD in general) warrants the price points. Besides, everything's homemade here, so that's also another valid reason for the price points. Fresh warm Rosemary bread comes out while waiting for your food; it was very good. I got their mushroom swiss burger, and my mother and father both got their chicken fried steak. All entrees were delish! Seriously. My burger was cooked perfectly - and they young server gal ASKED me how I wanted it cooked; most places' burgers are cooked to a blanket temp, you don't get a stipulate (unless it's a fine-dining establishment). Excellent flavors! The fries were solid, too. My parents raved about their steaks: Lightly breaded, tender too. I'm not going to lie, when we walked in I was afraid this was going to be another half-a**ed eatery, but boy was I wrong. When talking with our waitress, she said they get steady business, especially over the lunch hour and later dinner hours from tour groups passing through. Why can't I get this food in Dallas? Turkey and dressing with my two sides was so much food and was excellent. Chicken garlic pasta was simple but excellent. The rosemary bread was perfect to start the meal. They have Coke Zero. Service was spot on and the staff friendly. Quiet nice place to eat. Worth every penny in my book. read more

After driving all day and checking into our Airbnb, we headed here for dinner. It is a large establishment with tvs and different dining areas. Service was just OK as well as the food. We had fish nuggets that were a bit fishy tasting for my liking and French fries that were pretty good. For dessert, we split a piece of coconut cream pie that was also pretty good. The best thing i did was buy a bread pudding to go. They have refrigerators with lots of food items packaged for takeout. The bread pudding was amazing. Oof. This is a challenging review to write. If it would have been based on just my liver and onions, I would give them a 5. The entree was delicious and cooked to perfection. But hubby did not have the same experience with his prime rib. It was served nearly raw (claimed as medium rare), fatty, and grizzly (about 1/3 of the 12 oz. prime rib). When hubby expressed his dissatisfaction to the manager on duty, the manager defended the way it was cooked and offered a 10% discount. read more
