Ooh, it's not often that I disagree with Yelp ratings, but something weird is going on with Sear. We were promptly seated (even though we were 5 minutes late for our reservation), in a half-filled dining area at 6:30 pm on a Wednesday. Our waiter promptly dropped off menus, but after my wife was undecided on what to order, he left and we didn't see him again for 15 minutes. He was a nice guy, but the staffing level was inadequate for the light traffic. When it came time to order our meals, we were informed that they didn't have their regular carrot or French onion soups, as well as two entrees. As we ordered, he informed us of a 3rd entree that was unavailable. After we ordered, his manager returned to inform us that two of the entrees we had ordered weren't available! I (sulkily) ordered the salmon and a house salad. Now, the house salad is a big bowl of iceberg lettuce with a few radishes, cherry tomatoes and onions. My wife didn't even bother to taste it, and I only ate a third of it. Our entrees were well prepared and nicely presented, but our waiter wasn't able to find his way back to refresh our drinks. After an elongated, two-hour dinner, I was left thoroughly unimpressed. There is something going on here, and my guess is that they are struggling to find staff, pay their suppliers, and maintain quality. I certainly didn't share the experience of other recent reviewers. The thyme mocktail was crisp and refreshing, and my husband's old-fashioned was fragrant and well-balanced, complete with a perfect bada bing cherry. His only note was a preference for a single large ice cube rather than crushed, but overall the bar clearly knows what it's doing. The appetizers set a great tone. Warm sourdough was fresh and comforting. I enjoyed the bright, crisp house salad, while my husband's pumpkin soup was silky, savory, and perfectly seasonal. We both ordered the 7-ounce filet mignon, and the kitchen truly delivered! His medium-rare was tender and juicy with a beautiful sear, and my medium-well was still succulent--proof of precise cooking. They have an outstanding variety of cool, reasonably priced side dishes. My husband was excited about the Queen's honey carrots which were tender and flavorful (though the honey glaze was very subtle) and the creamy mashed potatoes that are part of the steak dish, were nicely executed. I didn't realize my filet came with mashed potatoes underneath, so I ordered a loaded, baked potato as my side, and ended up with extra potato (which I'm not complaining about whatsoever lol). We also enjoyed the whiskey cream sauce with mushrooms, which added a gentle smoky creamy richness, and the onion soubise, which was pure sweet comfort. Dessert was a highlight, as we celebrated my husband's birthday - we ordered all three featured desserts: The crème brûlée had a perfectly crackled top and smooth vanilla bean custard, the flourless chocolate dessert was deeply rich with espresso notes, and the butter cake was the total star - warm, moist, and decadently buttery. Each dessert was excellent in its own way, but that perfectly sinful butter cake stole the show! The atmosphere was inviting--warm wood tones, comfortable booths, well-balanced lighting, and enough TVs near the bar to keep my sports fan husband happy. Service was friendly and pleasant, though we found ourselves wishing for a bit more attentiveness. With a very quiet dining room, very early in the evening (we had a 4 PM reservation), there were moments when water refills lagged and opportunities for wine suggestions went unoffered (and we were definitely wanting to order some red with our steaks, but gave up because by the time there was an opportunity, we were finished with our steaks). We also briefly looked into the small private dining room on our way through the bar, and while we were greeted politely by one of the employees who was sitting in there, it felt like they missed the perfect opportunity to highlight the space for potential events. That said, nothing detracted significantly from the experience--it was simply a matter of polish. A touch more proactive engagement could elevate an already strong offering into something exceptional. Overall, Sear Steakhouse delivered an enjoyable and memorable evening. The food, drinks, and desserts are clearly strengths, and with just a little added focus on service flow and guest engagement, this restaurant has all the makings of a true standout in Rapid City. Started off with booth seat having food on it from a previous customer. Went downhill from thereon. My friend and I both ordered burgers and they were extremely greasy. Spoke to server and finally mgr. She offered to exchange them for something else but ended up comping desserts. Final straw was they charged me for someone else's bill. Said sorry and corrected it. I'm really torn on this review because I've only been to Sear Steakhouse twice, and the experiences were completely different. The first visit was for a work event in the back room (not sure if that made a difference), and it was outstanding. The food was cooked to perfection--my steak literally melted in my mouth, and the sides were hot and delicious. I couldn't stop raving about it afterward. The second visit, after talking it up to my family, was a letdown. They were busy, and maybe that played a role, but it just wasn't the same. My steak was mediocre, and my husband was genuinely confused why I had claimed it was one of the best steaks I'd had in a long time. Unfortunately, when it comes to restaurants, the bad tends to outweigh the good. We haven't been back, and I can't justify the price tag when there are other great steak options in town. My wife and I stopped at Sear steakhouse for dinner tonight. We started with drinks. I got the Sturgis red ale and my wife had the peach whiskey both were excellent. We had the truffle Brie cheese dip with soft pita chips drizzled with honey this was awesome. I had the sirloin steak with truffle butter and my wife had the filet both cooked to perfection. First off, Tim was an excellent server, he was attentive, never let our drinks run dry and he could crack a joke to make it the best experience. The restaurant itself was so clean and elegant looking down to the glassware. Our food; rated by my dad, two young children, and myself, was all rated a 10/10. Highly recommend and will definitely be back. As you can tell by the picture, not only was it delicious but it was plated by a professional. Bought a gift card for my parents to Sear. They had been in before and loved it. They used the card last night and said quality really went down. They ordered the surf and turf. Said there was a weird miso glaze all over the scallops and steak. The steak was tiny, the knew it was small but this was tiny. Vegetables were over done. After some research, we landed on Sear Steakhouse and I couldn't think of a better way to cap off the day! From the moment we walked in, the service was impeccable. I wish I got her name, but our server was so friendly and attentive. We ordered a bunch of items but the stand outs were their ribeye, lamb rack, and parm truffle fries. The ambiance of the restaurant is unique, perfectly balancing an upscale feel with casual tones. (We feared we'd be underdressed in jeans and sweaters, but were just fine!) The dining room is classy, and there are also tv's at the bar. The goat cheese sticks were wonderful, and the ribeye steaks and filets we ordered were very good. While we didn't opt to try the date night menu special, its features sounded fun. Small touches, like the bread from a local bakery, added to the experience and emphasized the feeling that we weren't at a chain steakhouse. Waiters were great and very attentive. My husband and I both ordered the surf and turf. When they said petite filet they weren't kidding on the petite part. Steak was tiny and there were only two scallops on the plate. Mashed potatoes were ok. Brussels sprouts were tough and under cooked. I personally didn't care for the Miso glaze that sort of overpowered everything. The steak was incredibly tender and cooked perfectly. The desserts were very good. Fantastic food and service! I have really enjoyed having dinner at Sear. I prefer sitting in the bar dining areas because it feels a little more intimate and relaxed. The seating areas are cozy and the lighting is warm whereas, the dining room side is brightly lit and a little more vibrant and feels too formal for my taste. One thing I really love about the menu is that many items are local and seasonal, and even the delicious bread comes from a local bakery. I love the idea of farm to table, and this restaurant really makes the effort to make that happen. The food was delicious - farm to table I would call it. We had the goat cheese cigars and sourdough bread for starters which were amazing! My husband wanted a nice steakhouse and after reading reviews from steakhouse chains nearby that weren't favorable, I stumbled upon Sear which had a lot better reviews. The decor is very charming and I loved their plates and crystalware. Our waitress was so sweet and accommodating. She was very attentive but not too much that we couldn't keep our conversation going. Admittedly, I am not a big steak person, you don't have to be to come here they have plenty of non-steak options but I wanted to try steak anyway, when in Rome...or a steakhouse.... My husband is all about steak and he was very happy with his sirloin and his demi-glacé sauce. He loved it and the steak was cooked perfectly (his words). I played it safe and did the tri-tip bites appetizer as my main course which was cooked amazingly well and I loved the sauce that came with it! Absolutely divine! I added truffle butter for good measure and that was also a treat! The mashed potatoes which I am generally particular about, were also incredible.
