This review is for the office staff. When I first scheduled my appointment, I was told they would check with my insurance to confirm whether there would be any out-of-pocket charges. I received no follow-up until the day before my appointment, so I called to reconfirm. I was reassured that I had nothing to worry about -- that my general cleaning and check-up would be fully covered by insurance. On the day of my visit, right before the x-ray, I asked again if there would be any out-of-pocket cost. They had me wait about 20 minutes in the x-ray room before returning to confirm that it would be 100% covered. Based on that assurance, I went ahead with the procedure. Two weeks later, I received a bill for the x-ray...!! When I called to ask about it, I was told it was ultimately my responsibility to understand my insurance coverage. But as a patient, there's no way for me to distinguish between a "basic" or "preventive" x-ray -- and I relied on the office's guidance. To make matters worse, the bill they sent had my name spelled incorrectly. That kind of error, along with the misinformation, does not inspire confidence. I also wonder why a non-preventive x-ray was even billed during a routine cleaning appointment. If this was just a standard check-up, why was the x-ray categorized in a way that isn't considered preventive and therefore not fully covered? It's not about the amount of the bill -- it's about the lack of reassurance, accountability, and transparency. My 40+years dentist retired and I have been looking for a dentist. My dad who is 91 years old dentist also retired and he asked me find him a new dentist. I happened to find Dr Cheng on yelp and as I reviewed the comments they were all positive. Booked my dads appt and he was happy with the office. He said everyone in the office is very nice and their cleaning is excellent. My dad is very critical and when he told me this I decided to book myself an appt. I went in and experienced the same experience my dad did. Everyone from the front office to the back office were friendly. Christy took my X-rays and she made me laugh and engaged with me as if we knew each other for a long time. Dr Cheng reviewed my X-rays and he is wonderful. Very down to earth and excellent attitude towards patients. He answered all my questions. I can't forget to mention Diana who helped me from the beginning to set up my appt. She uses text to communicate with me and I love it! I didn't know how to see if I still had coverage after I retired and she said she can call for me. She gave me the run down on my plan and she also booked my appt. Dana the dental hygienist is one of 3 in the office. She did an excellent job cleaning my teeth. She took her time and made sure she got all the plaque off my teeth. She does a thorough job at explaining rationale and process. I highly recommend this office. Going to the dentist isn't the most exciting place to be but the team helped but my neglected teeth on the right track (with minimum pain). I really do trust this team already because they have a friendly, family-oriented atmosphere who are patient, willing to explain each procedure, and not in a hurry to attend to the next patient. Hello out there! If you are in need of a wonderful dentist with a fantastic staff, look no farther! We both highly recommend Dr. Justin Cheng and his staff. We've had the pleasure of being the clients at this dentist practice for about 7 plus years. And, folks we do mean pleasant experiences at this office. We are seniors, and we've had some hair raising, past experiences with other dentists in Fremont. Actually, quite frightening experiences, but I won't name who they were... Actually, when we enter Dr. Justin Cheng's office, we are welcomed and greeted by Jeanette. Then, we are later led to a dentist room by Christie, and our hygienist is Dana. They are all so wonderful, and we appreciate them! And, lastly Dr. Cheng is fantastic and always welcomes you with a warm smile and tells you what to expect at this appointment. After so many awful experiences, we love and really appreciate this DDS Dentistry practice. Geez! Everyone who works for Dr. Justin Cheng is a delight and they've all been there for many years. I'm sure the rest of his staff is great as well, but these are the people we go to there. We have found the pricing to be fair (especially when we compare the pricing with our past experiences). Last year, at Dr. Cheng's office; I had a large permanent bridge replaced. Dr. Cheng made sure it met my expectations and that I was pleased. I have to add that my new one is so much better and everyone says it looks great. (Much better than the old one I had from another dentist). My husband has a new partial bridge, and he's so pleased with it. He'd had several from other dentists, but he'd always had problems with them fitting properly, and he wouldn't wear them everyday; but he loves his new partial bridge and always wears it. I went to Dr. Cheng once and never again. The appointment started out ok and everyone seemed friendly, but then it came time for fixing some cavities. Well at the time I was between jobs and was watching my spending. So instead of getting four cavities fixed I only had two done thinking later I would come back to get the other two done. It seemed Dr. Cheng did not like that decision and purposely nicked my gums. I did not know he did that until a few hours later when the novocaine wore off and for some reason my gums was hurting. I look in the mirror to see this 1/4-1/3" gash in my gums (see photo). Just to be clear my cavities were on the top (biting part) of my teeth so there is no reason for the drill to be near my gums. I had a feeling something was up when the assistant asked the doctor when she should schedule my next appointment and he hesitated and then said, "we'll wait for her to schedule the appointment." And immediately walked away. Obviously will not be going back since he will only do "a good job" if you agree to all the work he "recommends". read more

I had a painful experience at a local dentist office 3 years ago. The dentist replaced my old fillings but didn't do it right. So I ended up looking for help with many dental professionals in the past 3 years. Justin Chen is one of the 4 dentists that I consider a really bad and shady dentist. He is too confident with his work and when I said the bite was good and there was no pain he convinced me to get more drill down. In his own words: "I am in this field for over 20 years and I know what I am doing, trust me..". After he convinced me using those fancy words, I lied down again on the chair, and he drilled on all 4 of my teeth. The truth was, the more drill he did, the worse the bite it became, especially those were the unnecessary drill, after he screwed up the bite, he told me he already spent too much time on my teeth, which was weird, because initially I wanted to leave when the bite was good and he is the one who convinced me to lie down again and let him drill more. The idea that he did the drill on purpose to damage my teeth is beyond i can fathom. I cried a lot after his treatment because the bite was completely off. And only people who had a bad bite experience can feel my pain right now. I have been to a lot of dentists, he is one of the worst and irresponsible dentist I have experienced. I want to warn everyone about his ego. Stay away from him especially when he gave you a big smile and eager to drill your teeth. What a nightmare I had. I am writing down this updated review still in a lot of pain right now. And the drilled tooth (cusp) is gone, and gone forever. Now I probably need to pay big bucks to get a crown to get the right bite back. read more

I have been coming to Dr. Murakami and Dr. Cheng's office since I was a little kid (25+ yrs) and now bring my own husband and kids there as well. Dr. Cheng is extremely thorough in all of his exams, explanations of treatment and takes pride in his dental work provided. The office is modern, clean and we've always felt like family there. I have complete confidence in any recommended treatment that Dr. Cheng or his staff may recommend. The hygienists are awesome and care so much about you and your mouth's health. Dana, Mary and Amy are all equally great and I always walk out feeling like I got a VIP treatment. The office has digital x-rays and an intra-oral camera to help with diagnosing and education for patients. I always look forward to my dental cleanings! As far as with billing, Jeannette, Diane and Kim are wonderful at explaining all treatment plans, insurance costs and payments and are up front about all costs. (Which I appreciate!) They all take pride in getting to know you as a person and building relationship too. Best office ever and everyone should come! My family and I started seeing Dr. Cheng and his staff late last year and I am more than pleased with all services. While my husband has only have to have a few services done, I was not so lucky. I really fear the dentist due to a childhood fear, but you are in awesome hands w/ Dr. Cheng and his wonderful staff. I had to have six super-old silver fillings drilled out and replaced with new ones, as well as a new cavity, resurfacing of two existing newer fillings done at another dental office, and a deep-clean of my teeth (not great with going to the dentist, again, childhood fear). Throughout all this, everyone from the front desk, associates and Dr. Cheng have been nothing short of helpful, informative and friendly. They know their stuff and they are so great at what they do. Now, here's the best part: billing. Yes, the billing. Our last dentist was NOT transparent in her billing practices, and would frequently charge me extra, always citing that our insurance did not cover X amount of dollars that was then passed on to us. Um, what? Anyway, I semi-expected Dr. Cheng's office to pull these same shenanigans, but guess what? They don't. Because they are honest and care about retaining their patients. We have yet to be surprised with a $150+ bill upon checking in for an appointment. This whole office is fantastic. From the front desk receptionist to the hygienist to the doc. They have retained their staff for the last 30 years I have been going and I think that says a lot. I have always had fantastic work done, I have always had honnest referrals when I needed surgical or orthodontic evaluation. My entire family growing up has been in the hands of Previouspy Dr Murakami and now Dr Cheng. I am such an advocate for this office. I was 5 years old when I started going and now I drive from 2 HOURS away to bring my husband and children. My husband has had a long history of dental issues from childhood and since going to see Dr Cheng 10 years ago he has since had no issues. Dr Cheng will only the work that is needed and at the time it is needed. During covid my 7 uear old had a cavity in which we tried to take her to a pediatric specialist closee to where we lived. I figured it would go well, they postponed the work, she got an abcessed tooth and had a nightmare of an extraction at the other pediatric dentist. She was left with a lot of anxiety about it. Not only did Dr Cheng take such good care with her, the whole office made sure she felt comfortable and she. Has had a fantastic experince with them. She has done her cleanings and recently had to have 3 cavities filled and the way they handled it was amazing, very sympathetic, slow, explained the process to her and she was able to have her problems taken care of. Let me first start off by saying Dr.Cheng is the best and only dentist I have ever seen! I've been a patient with this office for 18 years seeing Dr. Murakami and then Justin for the last 15 years . He has done numerous fillings on me and my bridge after having an accident in February on my post and crown. He always is advancing in his profession and works with his staff and his best to make sure your insurance is used properly and effectively. I can't imagine seeing anyone else after becoming family here over the years. He's one of the best in Fremont and it will remain that way. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Murakami (and now Dr. Cheng) for over 20 years. My family grew up coming to Dr. Murakami. The doctors are the best there is! I do not like going to the dentist but the entire staff treat you like you are their family, listen to your concerns, fears etc and do everything to make you as comfortable as possible - which THEY DO!!!! From the reception staff, to billing/insurance, hygienists and assistants - they are all great. Some of the gals have been there as long as I've been coming to this office and we reminisce about families etc every time I go in. The newer staff still treat you like they've known you forever as well. Dr. Murakami and Dr. Cheng are very gentle, understanding, kind and they listen to you - your fears of whatever procedure you may be having. I drive over 30 minutes just to see them. You cannot go wrong here - they are the best. read more

Just going from a temporary cap to a permanent cap. The second most painful experience at a dentist I've ever had. I was one of the last appointments for the day on a Friday and I felt as if everyone was trying to get a start on the weekend. I had explained many time that my pain tolerance was very low. At the end the Dr. apologized for the "torture ". While the Dr. and the staff are very nice I certainly didn't feel like he had match compassion. Will absolutely look for a new dentist read more

I'm one of those crazy dental-anxiety people. After avoiding all but emergency dental care for the past five years or so, I have a bunch of issues that could not be put off any longer. I basically picked Dr. Cheng's practice based on their Yelp reviews (my insurance is a PPO so they pay regardless of network). So far I've have one root canal and have to go back for a lot more work. The office does provide nitrous (gas) sedation and I believe Dr. Cheng will prescribe oral sedation like Valium after a consult/discussion. They do not offer IV sedation. My experience was as good as a root canal could be. I can't get too flowery about it because hey, it's someone drilling into your teeth! Dr. Cheng and his staff are all very kind and professional. Christy (I think that is her name?) the chair side dental assistant is a saint - she gave me a teddy bear to hold when I got upset. The ladies at the front desk have been very thorough in explaining my benefits so far. I'll keep on coming back here until my smile is in tip-top shape again. read more

Been going to here so long I can remember when I started. They still have a picture of me from when I was in Jr. High. They have been giving great service for years. My grandmother even came in from New York in the summer and started having severe pain in her mouth. They quickly got her information and took care the issue in a timely manner. They even setup a short term payment plan which she ended up getting a discount on for paying it off early. These people are genuinely nice people. read more

I had all my teeth filling done here but when it comes to caps or root canals, they are bad. I never had pain in my molar but they said that I have cavity.They did lots of digging in my one left molar first with a filling then they ended up doing cap later it was more painful, Than on the same molar he did root canal because it was very uncomfortable and now it is worse I cannot eat from my left side my left jaw is hurting, nech and left arm. After 6 months now it is worse and the cap seem to be loose. I would not recommend with them cap or root canal. I feel like suing them! read more
