As a vegan, I have special dietary needs, so I particularly appreciate places that cater to sensitive palates. That said, I don't follow a gluten-free diet, but I still think the concept of a gluten-free bakery is a great one. So I was excited to check out Jute, especially since I'd read they have a lot of vegan options. In particular, the baked goods (and not the breads) are what I was after. I showed up in the late morning and there were a couple people working who were friendly enough. Unfortunately, all but two of the baked goods have honey in them, so I opted to try the streusel. I paid my €2.30 and took it to go. At work, I grabbed a fork and got ready to slice in. Except... it was like cutting into a brick. I didn't expect it to be like cake, but I also didn't expect a hard, solid baked good. In the end, I resorted to picking it up and eating it with my hands, because a fork wouldn't cut through and using a knife just resulted in crumbs everywhere. Though the consistency was a disappointment, the flavor was fine. Still, I was hoping for something a bit more moist. It's a bit harder to attain with vegan and gluten-free goods, but not impossible. I will definitely make it a point to check out Jute again, but if my first experience is indicative, it's not a place to go out of the way for if you're not gluten-free. read more

I always try to give places that make the effort to cater to my dietary restrictions a break, cut them some slack. But when I brought back a bag full of pastries from this place to my hotel, I had to spit out most of what I tried and throw away the rest. I might, might, make another visit the next time I am in Berlin to see if I just picked poorly. But I would not recommend that anyone make a trip out to this place when there are other places in Berlin that will make adjustments for you (given, it is torture to walk by all of those gluten-y baked goods and not be able to partake, but this place only pours salt on the wound). read more

Tasty gluten-free breads with a side of excellent service! I walked in to buy breakfast for my husband and me. The woman behind the register was all smiles and quickly got my three breads and two cappuccinos. While I was waiting, the baker brought out a tray of chocolate pastry with hazelnuts on top. I added that to my order. I got home, and had a bite of each bread. I was in heaven! The breads were crusty, dense, and moist. For me, this is the perfect bread combo. And very hard to find with gluten-free bakeries. I will be back for more breads and desserts during my trip here. read more

I'm very disappointed with this place. I picked up a few pastries and most of them were dry, tasteless and bland. I did enjoy the frosted muffin that was pretty good but the rest was absolutely nasty. The chocolate cake tasted like the brownies they give you on an airplane. The poppy seed pastry had a decent flavor but fell apart and felt like sand in your mouth, it was extremely dry. None were as bad as the lemon tart, it was so dry and bland and the filling was like a firm jello thing with absolutely no flavor. To make it worse the prices are not reasonable for the taste and quality you get. Maybe I chose the wrong pastries but they didn't have much of a selection and to get 3/4 completely wrong is pretty sad. read more

I have never, ever in the 7 years since my diagnosis eaten gluten free bread this good. I got a körnerbaguette, which was delightfully chewy, moist and so flavourful. The raisin bun was not dry at all, and the cherry crumble cake wasn't just on an almond base... It was real cake, soft amd springy. None of it tasted gluten free, and the best part is that none of it needed to be warmed, baked or toasted. I could eat it all fresh, without spreads and the texture was incredible. Had these simply been gf offerings in a "normal" bakery, I wouldnt have believed they were really gluten free. I only wish I lived in Berlin so I could come here every day! read more
