Just passing through here to catch a late lunch. We were thoroughly impressed. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable. Interior was rustic, clean, and well maintained. Brisket and sausage were comparable to any of the well known Texas bbq establishments (and that's saying a lot!) The bark on the brisket was thick and flavorful. They didn't have too many side options but the pinto beans were very good. read more

Everytime I'm in the Rusk area and in need of good barbecue, I always hit this place up. Their facility is pretty modern and the setting is comfortable. They just started their market patron signatures on their wooden walls and let people sign their names on it. When you walk into the building, you'll be automatically situated in the line to order. The line can be a long one if you come in at the high traffic time. Food wise their ribs are fall off the bone and filled with the oh so smoky flavors. Their brisket is another strong choice as well with its moist cuts and peppery flavors, there really is no wrong choice. Pricing remains reasonable and you'll have a good time here with the food. read more

This is legit BBQ. There is no other true bbq place in and around the east Texas Tyler area that does a better job than JW's. This place is definitely off the beaten path but so good! My husband was traveling for work and after hours of driving decided to grab a meal snack. The best bought brisket we've had was Blacks, and this was comparable, possibly better. We got it to go and forgot a fork; it was so hard to grab because it just fell apart (in a good way!). Incredibly juicy and tender. The macaroni was sooo good, creamy with fantastic flavor. Everyone there was warm, friendly, and welcoming. I highly recommend if you come out here! read more

I'm from Phoenix, currently living in Colorado, so I haven't had many encounters with GOOD (emphasis on GOOD) barbecue, but man this is some of the best barbecue i've had in my life. The pulled pork, the brisket, the turkey, the sides. All of it was AMAZING. The atmosphere of the place was really cool, and it smelled amazing. It pains me that we don't have barbecue places even remotely close to as good in Denver because I will be seeing the brisket in my dreams from now on My only gripe was that the line is quite slow, but the food was so good it doesn't affect my review at all. 5 stars read more

I saw a post on Instagram of their cheesecake with brisket on it a year ago, and saved it. I couldn't get the thought out of my mind of how interesting that was! Like, how does that work? So last week, I decided the time had come and with a friend drove three hours to try it. My fantastic experience began by DM'ing the owner on Instagram just to verify they were still serving the cheesecake. Since I mentioned we were traveling so far, he took our order ahead of time so we would be assured food by the time we arrived. The food did not disappoint! It was incredible! The ribs, the creamy macaroni and cheese = . And that cheesecake? Yes, brisket topped cheesecake was worth the trip! The townspeople in the restaurant were quiet and peaceful. The staff the same. We felt welcome there. Everyone was very polite. I can't speak highly enough of JW's. Oh my, this was some DELICIOUS BBQ!!! Some friends and I were visiting Jacksonville over the weekend, and we went to JW's Barbecue for lunch. The sliced brisket and pulled pork were all amazing. We would have preferred toasted buns, but it certainly wasn't a deal breaker. The staff was friendly and the restaurant was clean. We will definitely eat at JW's on our next trip to Jacksonville. We passed 3 other BBQ places to get to this one. I read another review comparing it to Blacks. Well if ya know... ya know. My grandfather was born and raised in Lockhart TX. The brisket did not disappoint the sausage was good nothing like Lockhart but definitely good. The owner offered us cheesecake it tasted homemade and definitely worth saving room for. The staff was friendly and made conversation with everyone. If you are in the area I would recommend stopping. read more

To judge from what I experienced over lunch, it is well regarded-- and with good reason. $23.37 purchased a quarter pound of fatty brisket, a jalapeno cheddar sausage, and sides of elote and squash/zucchini. A refillable soft drink (unsweetened tea) rounded out the order. The brisket features moist and tender meat with exceptional bark. This is a great bite-- and don't hesitate to ask for a bit of burnt end, which is truly meat candy! The sausage has great balance and snap. It is one of the best of its kind to be found in Texas, and this is a highly competitive market. Both sides were dead on. And as is so often the case in the universe of small town BBQ, the price point is more than fair. Make an effort to get here, and do try and beat the noontime crowd. It's worth the effort; owner and pitmaster Jonathan Wilson is putting out a product that rivals the best in The Lone Star State. read more

Visiting from TN, and had the opportunity to eat at JW's. Five stars is not enough for this place. Greeted at the door by the owner and staff. Ordered the brisket a couple of ribs and the elote. When ordering the brisket, I was asked if I wanted it fatty or lean. I appreciate having the option. Chose the fatty. It had an amazing flavor and bark. Ribs were good as well as the elote. Owners are friendly and have visited with us both times we have been in- very knowledgeable about gluten-free issues. Make sure you get here before they run out- we have come about 2pm and they only have brisket and pulled pork left. My daughter got the pull pork and cheese and jalapeño sausage. We also got side potato salad and corn elote. Everything we got was very good ! . I've tried Salt Lick , CountyLine , Iron Works , Heritage, Bad to the Bone, Stanley's and now JW 's . The service was great and people were friendly and helpful when ordering. The place was clean and comfortable places to sit and enjoy some nice bbq for lunch . They even have Dr Pepper with that pure cane sugar glass bottle . Not so at JW's the sides are really good & my favorite lean sliced brisket sandwich is piled high with great taste & flavor. All I can say is wow! That is good BBQ! Jonathan Wilson has a great start to a BBQ business here in Jacksonville, TX. He has a Turkey that is succulent, smoky and juicy. That is hands down above other BBQ places. The brisket was hot, thick and served with a nice light bark and has some fat in it that adds to the flavor.
