The customer service at this location is not great. We came into ask a couple of questions about the mowers. We had asked about a senior discount and also mentioned the sale online. The manager ended up coming over and looked annoyed that we were asking about this. I did not think it was far fetched to ask, especially because a lot of businesses offer a senior discount. I was also told there was no sale on the mowers, I had to show her online what I was referring too. Her response was "then just order it online". read more

Great store, super friendly staff that were willing to take the time to get some parts together for an impromptu fix on one of our companies chemical sprayers. While the quick fix didn't last because the parts they had weren't hardy enough to handle the high alkaline chemical we used, they fit well and performed exceptionally for the rest of the 3 hours we needed them to. The staff members in the plumbing and paint departments worked together and were quite helpful in helping me piecemeal together the makeshift adapter we needed. Definitely recommend going this location because of the awesome staff and the complimentary popcorn didn't hurt either. read more

We came to refill a propane tank on Sunday and even though my cousin forgot his 'propane card' (if you buy 5 tanks of propane, the 6th tank is free) they filled out a new card for him and told him he could combine his cards. They didn't have to do that but I appreciated them for doing so. This ACE hardware store's propane burned hot and true and cooked our food evenly. I cannot confirm that about the propane from any of the other refill places in town. Maybe other propane is as good... maybe it's not - I just cannot say. This is first off, one of the biggest Ace Hardwares I have ever been in. They stock just about everything you could ever need for a project. The store is laid out pretty well and aisles have signs to tell you what's in them. Lots of staff to help you find things. But things are still priced like an Ace Hardware. read more

I am from Union Mills and was a good customer. Even before but especially after the remodel, their prices changed. Free popcorn and you will pay for it. High prices on everything. I drive to lowes in Michigan City and what i save more than pays for the gas. I started using my phone to compare prices on everything i buy from hardware to consumer goods. Wow. Usually 5% to 15% more. They have a captive local market in Laporte with few other choices other than Ace wallet. read more

Took our self-propelled lawnmower to Kabelin to service it on July 1, 2019. At that time, they indicated that there was a one week service wait to complete the job or replacing the belt for the self-propelled transmission. After the second week, we called to ask if it was finished. They indicated that one of their service techs had a back injury so service would be delayed. Third week, still no contact and no mower. Grass is getting longer. Fourth week, we call and they give us the same story. One missing in action service tech. Keep in mind, they evaluated the problem as a bad belt. Then, they said the wrong belt arrived. More waiting. On the fifth week, I had had it with the entire process. So, I told them we were coming to pick it up and it better be repaired...they assured us it would. Then, today, August 2nd, they called to tell us the bad news. Our transmission was bad and the total repair bill would be 240.00 (plus the 46.00 paid for diagnostics). Kabelin will no longer receive any business from me. There were no apologies, no money off the product we bought -- a new Toro lawn mower because our grass has to be mowed immediately after a month of growth. read more

As a customer of Kabelin's for over ten years I was very satisfied until my last experience. I went in and rented a carpet cleaner as I have for the last 3 years. The woman reminded me to clean out the tanks before bringing the machine back. I understood and did as I was told before brining it back. Sunday I went to return the machine and a young man who was a new employee was not sure how to handle the return. He called over a woman to help. She never acknowledged me, she just said to him "make sure the tanks are clean or he doesn't get his deposit back". She then looks in the tanks and says"their ok". She then flips over the machine and says"it's dirty he loses his deposit". I questioned this policy since the previous rentals and this one I was only told to clean the tanks. She says nothing and then grabs a brochure from the rental rack opens it and points to a line that says the machine must be clean. Again I asked why was I not told about this when I rented the machine? She again points to the brochure. I left before I lost my cool. The ten dollar deposit does not bother me nor will it change my life. The arrogance and ignorance of the employee is what will cause me to find another hardware store. TJ Blough read more
