Best Afghani food in Chicago! Parking and table is easy to find..sometimes. Very clean and tastefully decorated interiors. We begin the dinner with the complimentary bread and the pomegranate sauce. They have an option for a veg soups if case if has a preference. We started with their Manto,appetizer. Its like dumplings with interesting spices and yogurt dressing over them. Very well grilled kabobs of Chicken and perfectly cooked lamb over a bed of long grain rice. They have a beef mince and chicken mince kabobs which are interesting too. They have a veggie platter for the non-meat eaters. And last but not least they allow BYOB!! We will definetly go there again. read more

The new location is spacious and comfy. Great. Great. Great! Items I had to eat were: Afgan Salata - Light, fresh, hint of lemon. Dill Lima Rice - Mmmm. The hint of dill made it great. Afgan Carrot Rice - Tasted great with the pumpkin dish. Kadu (Sweet baby pumpkin) - This was my favorite. This place is absolutely great. They are true to their word of having the best marinated chicken I've had in chicago. It's cut with a fork tender and perfectly marinated and juicy. Their Palau dish with afghan rice and lamb shank is an incredible mix of sweet and gamey flavors with soft and crunchy textures from the meat and toppings. Everything is as authentic as can be. Guys, this place is by far the best authentic afghan restaurant in Chicago. I came with some extremely picky afghan friends and they absolutely loved it. Everything we ordered was cooked fresh, and the kebabs were especially excellent. While the food was phenomenal, the thing that stood out the most was the customer service. We decided to eat at the restaurant at the last moment on a Saturday night. I was looking for a place which served homecooked food that was flavorful but not over the top spicy. We needed convenient parking and a quiet place to talk. This restaurant fit the bill perfectly. We started the meal with two different soups: mixed bean with noodles, and a tomato bean. Both were truly amazing. Then we have vegetarian dumplings and eggplant with tomato sauce for our appetizer. The main course was lamp kabobs and for dessert a dense seminola cake drizzled with honey and garnished with pistachios. We also had boiling hot cardamon tea. I added some ice cubes to mine to cool it down. This was a great place. Although not intended to be a coffee house, I could imagine meeting a friend there for tea and dessert. We have been here before and it was always very good. We were glad that it is working during Covid. It is very clean and safe to be here. Everyone is wearing a mask and very polite and attentive. The food is fantastic (and according to a friend who's been to Afghanistan authentic), the atmosphere is very cool, the staff is great, and the coffee and teas great too. One of the best restaurants in Skokie! The Kabul House made me fall in love with Afghan food and keeps me coming back to try more dishes! This place is hopping around dinner time any day of the week so I suggest making a reservation! There isn't even a certain dish I can recommend because everything I have tried is delicious. I've been coming to this restaurant for over 3 years now and the food is fantastic as the first day I visited. The food is the highlight of this restaurant. I've tried both the vegetarian options as well as the grilled meats and signature kabuli pulao. All of the grilled meats are super tender - I'm a big critic of bbq-ed meats and I have absolutely no complaints about this place. Try the combo platter and you'll see what I mean! Their dumpling appetizer is so tasty and I can see why they also offer it as a main dish as well. I'm typically a huge meat eater but this = place's vegetarian offerings leave me incredibly satisfied and happy! All of it is fantastic! The only downside is that it can get a little smoky since the ventilation isn't great but that won't stop me from coming! I'm so excited that they have a location opening up in Evanston! I passed by the other day and it looks like they're renovating the former space of Chicken and Waffles! Can't wait to come visit the newer location! read more

We had the Barg with Afghani Rice and it was just as you would expect a great kabob to taste like but way more tender and juicy. Also ordered the Mantoo Dumplings and they were excellent, the flavor from the tomato sauce on top was great. And the winner has to be the vegetable platter. I'm not a squash person or pumpkin but it was just so flavorful and cooked to perfection I would order again, and to top it off my parents said it's one of the best meals they have ever had. I ordered the combo plate with beef koobideh and chicken thighs. When I saw the desserts, I was tempted to get something and was eyeing the rice pudding. The host was raving about the Nutella baklava so I ended up getting that. The meat was excellent - tender and flavorful. The rice (the one with raisins) was delicious as well and there was a lot of it. Unfortunately, I did not like the Nutella baklava - it was wayyy too sweet for me. Delicious, as I have learned is standard for Afghani food (prior experience: Khyber Pass in NYC, home cooking from in-laws who lived in Afghanistan, and my own ventures in serving up some online recipes). The service was a bit scattered, seemingly due to an unexpected busy night for them on a Thursday. In general, we were well attended to. I highly recommend the mantoo dumplings. We tried these as well as the aushak, which are filled with the aush-rishta soup components. I have been quite spoiled by an Iranian friend who brings aush soup over all the time and quickly recognized these wonderful flavors and textures - but the treatment of the beef was quite memorable. We tried both the offered soups, the aush-rishta and the lentil. Both nice. If you have not had aush before I really recommend trying it, not as good as my friend's homemade, but who would be surprised! I went for the vegetarian platter to get a broad taste of many items on the appetizer and main dish menu, and found the pumpkin, eggplant, and cauliflower quite good - the spinach was not as much to my palette (although I really tend to like spinach). It came with a side of the delicious biryani rice, and with the manta dumplings I didn't feel 'shorted' in any way in terms of protein. My husband's kabuli palau was also good, essentially the biryani rice with lamb shank. The lamb was cooked quite well, very tender, but overall, the dish lacked a little of the 'oomph' he was hoping for. We ordered our daughter sides of rice and meat sauce and supplemented with bits from our plates. She enjoyed it. What really blew me away was the basil-mint tea! My word, what a delicious and heavenly concoction! I don't really care for mint, but love basil. Gotta learn how to replicate this at home. Although they offer what seem to be wonderful desserts, the warning tremors of a toddler meltdown had us hurrying out the door to save the pleasant atmosphere for the rest of the diners. We will be back and I will order multiple desserts to try as was my original plan. Overall, a nice atmosphere with good service and quite good food. This was a place that we had looked forward to going to for some time, and I think were a bit let down in that anticipation. My review is one is necessity. I had to have some Jeep work done across the busy Dempster road. So I took my laptop, a couple of beers (BYOB) and went over for lunch. Fired up the laptop, no wi-fi but staff are fantastic. (I used my Sprint hotspot) Place is beautiful. Reminded me of my tours overseas. Since I only had an hour or so, they were respectful. Found me a table with a power outlet. They respected me leaving my gear and heading over to the Jeep. Very good, great service. Once I returned after the garage. (Dempster Auto & Tire.. Big shout out), the food came, and it was fabulous. This, seriously is a place that prides itself in service and food. I turned my laptop off, no FB, gmail, whatever and just enjoyed the experience. This restaurant shocked me, it does not look like a nice restaurant from the outside, but once you go inside it is a beautiful set up. The decor was beautiful and pretty elegant as well. The menu does not have a big variety of food but what we had was good. We ordered two different plates to try and share and both plates and the appetizer were delicious! The service was excellent as well, the waiter was helpful with any questions we had and kept bringing us water. The price of the food was fair, it wasn't bad but it wasn't cheap. The plate sizes were worth it. This was my first experience of Afghanistan food and I was pleased! The service was excellent! Kudos to the waiters! My only complaint was that me and my guest both checked in in yelp and were promised an appetizer but they said that it was only one appetizer per table and not per person. I've *never* had chicken that tasted as rich, succulent, flavorful, and decadent as the chicken at Kabul House. Never. Which led me to my perfectly logical conclusion: I was eating people. Let me back up. I have long said that if Yanyao N leads you to a place, you need to eat there immediately. She knows her stuff and if the food is good enough for her to rave over, you need to get there as fast as you can. I waited until one of my best friends in the world made her way to Chicago to venture up north to Skokie and see what was going on at the KH. For a Friday night, it wasn't too busy and we were able to get a table in just a few minutes. From the time we sat until the time we left, we were waited on, greeted, talked to, and made to feel like guests in a home. I can't say enough about the top-notch service at work at the KH. The owners didn't take our presence for granted and went out of their way to make us feel at ease. Knowing it was our first time and my friend is a vegetarian, we were led to apps that we could share and would blow our tastebuds away. We started with the Vegetarian Aushak and the Boranee Baunja (eggplant, tomato sauce, yogurt, and mint). Delectable. Even if you were eating beef from the time you could crawl, do not shy away from the vegetarian offerings. I did not know plants could be so flavorful and filling. Our meals came with soup (the lentil is even better than described; if you don't get it, you are missing out on life) and I was wondering where I would put all the food, when the owner came by our table with a complimentary Bulanee, just so we could try it. O.M.Geee! Ridic. Stupid. Crazy. This dish will make you wanna scream, it's so good. Potatoes, scallions and leeks, folded into thin bread and then FRIED!!! Areyoukiddingme? The yogurt mint sauce is the perfect accompaniment to such a sinfully delicious option. And I didn't even mention the sweet black tea I gulped down by the gallon. Keep in mind, dear reader: this is all lead-up to the main event. I ordered the murgh. After all, it's what brought me here in the first place. Now, read my opening sentence. I don't know how the folks at KH prepare this chicken, but it's divine. The dish comes with bell peppers, garlic and tomato and served with rice (plain or seasoned) that comes with a veggie spread. I chose the dill rice (hallelujah!) and kadu (pumpkin; sweet AND savory). And, oh yeah: the plateS were roughly the size of a football field. We (my friend and I) sat in a booth for four and from all the food on our table, you would have thought there *were* four people eating. There's a reason why KH was on the Bib Gourmand list, folks. This is exquisitely good dining for everyday prices. The service, atmosphere, food, quantity, and price all add up to make KH one of Chicagoland's crown jewels. Just Kadu It! Make sure that you start out with the house specialty pumpkin dish. It is warm and savory and will convert even the staunchest of gourd haters. Take 'Yao for example - won't touch a pumpkin pie, not even just as a vehicle for Cool Whip, but she would never skip this dish. Starting your meal with the kadu will reset your expectations of Afghan food and show you that what might sound simple on the menu is actually going to surprise you with some densely layered and well balanced flavors. Do you Mantoo? Kabul House offers two different dumpling appetizers that are definitely in your best interest to order, mantoo and aushak. One is beef and the other leek; both are amazing. They are served drizzled with oil and an amazing yogurt sauce. The good news is that you don't have to decide which to try - they will do a combination with two of each if you ask. That was a hot tip from our super friendly server. Take the Aush-Rishta Challenge. Most entrees come with your choice of either the lentil-tomato or the aush-rishta soup. While they are both excellent, I think that the aush-rishta is the more unique of the two. It is a vegetable noodle soup with a little dab of the yogurt sauce, which you are helplessly addicted to already if you took my advice on the dumplings. Sorry about that. The menu says that is there simply to "excite your taste buds". We both know better than that, now. Murgh, it's what's for dinner. You should be nice and softened up by now. It is time for Kabul House to throw the haymaker. You drove all the way to Skokie; here's why. The fire roasted and seasoned chicken kabobs, simply known as Murgh, are the best kabobs you will ever have. They are the clear winner in the greatest chicken ever contest, non-fried category. This chicken will restore your faith in chicken if, like me, you hate what chicken has become in this land - a dried up mess of bland white meat. Kabul House remembers a time when chicken was actually a desirable thing to eat. Order it with the seasoned rice, which I don't even know where to begin describing. A Murgh is a terrible thing to waste. For three dollars more, you can order a second skewer. HOW??? HOW DO THEY DO IT?? How do they make their chicken so incredibly tender??? This is the most tender chicken I have ever had in my life. Absolutely amazing. Apparently they marinate it for at least a couple days, and the flavors are just intense. So well done. On top of that, our waiter (Duchan? Sorry if I spelled that incorrectly) was one of the most kindest people we have ever met. He personalized our entire meal and made sure we enjoyed our time there and answered all of our questions. My first Afghani meal was also my first meal in NYC. It was in December 2001, and New Yorkers were experiencing an unhealthy fascination for Afghanistan. That was the craze around town; Jerry Seinfeld was not totally wrong after all. He was a few years too early. I went there with a professor of mine who had driven me from Connecticut. I remember eating like a pig, finishing my plate and his, and apologizing for such a gluttonous behavior. He replied: "Women who eat are sexy". (I was soon to discover how true that was. The setting was quite different and the quiet streets of Skokie replaced the hustle of bustle of Hell's Kitchen in Manhattan but the meal was just as memorable as its 10-year old predecessor. Two words for you: CHICKEN KEBAB (or Murgh). Let me tell you that you never had such heavenly chicken in your life. No, I promise. Forget the "no chicken" rule and order it; it's life changing. It's not only tender - it's soft. You feel like you are biting into a cloud of the moistest, most flavorful piece of chicken ever. The meat is marinated in yogurt and spices then grilled on skewers. Sounds simple; it's ma-gic. Served with dill rice and grilled vegetables it's simply perfect. Or you can go the lamb road and get qabili palau. Tender pieces of baby sheep piled under a fragrant mountain of rice, carrots, raisins and spices - this is also Afghanistan's national dish. Generous, exotic and delicious. End your meal with a glass or two of the strong home-made tea, forget all your misconceptions about the country and enjoy.
