Kabul House is back on Dempster, this time in Evanston. The menu has many of the same excellent options as before, and the new location's interior is definitely worth the visit. Here's what I found on my latest visit: With the move, the new location has a beautiful interior. The new parking lot will very likely have a bit more room once the rehab is completed, and there is ample street parking nearby. The service was, as always, polite, prompt, attentive, and professional. Even though the location is new, the menu prices are very close to their previous prices. I had the lamb kebab with dill rice and iced tea - all yummy! The Scottish Salmon dish was elegant and well prepared as well, a very good choice. The bread they make for the table and garnishes as well as the sauce are excellent. Why not four stars? A few kinks to iron out with the parking lot, and I truly and honestly miss the home made soup that used to arrive before the entree! Called Kabul house today for the reservation for lunch special....The receptionist told me Lunch special is till 3 pm...Did the reservation for 8 people..Took my nephew and nieces there...when we reached there they said there is no reservation and there is no lunch special...Finally after arguing they accepted we had our reservation... we got the table and got seated, than the waiter came to take order he said they don't serve lunch special on Friday. I said I spoke with someone and they said they do and he came to our table to took the order and 2:59 pm and he said we can't do lunch special... We left without eating.... Love Kabul Food!! But the Staff is worst!!! They don't know how to do there jobs... read more

I just don't get the hype and the good reviews for this place from the 500+ yelpers. We have been wanting to come here ever since hearing from friends and others on how great the food was. We dined on a Saturday and it was relatively packed. We were initially told a wait for 20 minutes but seated us within 5. For the appetizers, we checked in on yelp to avail the free app for each of us but quickly got denied as the "policy" was one per table. Ok, we decided to settle for the mantoo dumpling which was fine. For our main course we decided to get a combo platter with boneless chicken and lamb shish kabab as the waiter claimed those were their most popular. The chicken was very red and lacked flavor and spice. There were certain pieces that were burnt but that didn't make it worse. The chicken was not marinated well and lacked certain basic ingredients like salt and pepper. The rice was sweet from some sort of sweetener and not the raisins. Kabul House was a big disappointment. The food is overpriced and certainly didn't satisfy our appetite. Not coming back. Oh and we had to park like two blocks away as there some shipping containers that took over 5 spots . read more

What a wonderful experience trying a cuisine I've never had the chance to experience!! The appetizers and entrees were delicious and decent portion sizes! The staff were friendly and the restaurant has a light and airy feel to it! Make sure to remember it's a BYOB so that you pick up something to drink if you'd like! read more

One of my best dining experiences. The food , service and decor all were great and Gerber (hope I get his name right) took really good care of us. We were the last diners of the night and it could have been a disaster but they gave us space to enjoy the meal - no rush. It meant a lot. I will be crazy not to come back. Have often driven longer hours for a far worse meal. Had the salmon , goat stew and chicken stew. Spices in both were great - balanced fragrant and not spicy. My family and I discovered this place a year ago and we have been coming back over 10 times since then. The food is simple but extremely delicious. I haven't tried any food which was not great. I kabullied my boyfriend into coming here, and he didn't regret a minute of it. We gawked over the Yelp rating and strolled in with high expectations. The interior resembled an inside of a palace, and all the walls were so white they were basically medical. The very amicable waiter with hair more slicked back than that of Jared Leto gave us a few suggestions, and since we were in a hurry, we took his word for it. My future was in this dude's very capable hands, and judging from the exquisite meal that resulted from his recs, I'd probably let him take care of my firstborn child. So the element of surprise is about to be a motif in my review. I kept on pining for the Aushuk but opted for the chicken kabob dish that apparently won a restaurant contest out of hundreds of contenders. The waiter *surprised* me with two of the Aushuks (raviolis with exotic tasting tomato sauce, lentils and other ingredients of ecstasy tbh) and told us that he would "take care of the soups". Little did we know that he be taking care of us like a Mother Teresa throughout this meal. We were *surprised* with a tomato-y soup as well as a yellow-green vegetable one (can't remember of their names). I was a bigger fan of the latter. My bf got the Mantoo which is another form of ravioli, except filled with ground beef and a variety of veggies that balanced out the heaviness of the meat. It was topped in a minty yogurt sauce that I demand to be liberally sprinkled on top of whatever appetizer is served at my wedding. And then when the check came, we realized that the soups AND the Aushuk AND the cardamom tea were complimentary. The last time I had a conglomerate of this much free shyt was welcome week of college when they wanted to trick you into thinking that school is second to paradise. I visited the Kabul House about about a couple of weeks ago with dear friends from my school. The Kabul House provided a beautiful atmosphere for our meeting - it was like visiting in a welcoming home. The setting was very upscale. My son #2 was stationed in Turkey, once upon a time and said that it was indeed upscale, because the restaurants in Turkey were not as beautiful as the Kabul House. The service was unbelievable. Our server knew so much about EVERYTHING on the menu and cared nothing more than for us to be happy and filled! THANK YOU!!! Our meal started with pita and various sauces - a yogurt with cucumber, dill and a hint of mint and a spicier sauce that had just the right amount of zip, but not too much as to burn. The hummus was tasty - really a meal in itself - not at all pasty, but full of flavor and good texture. I had a delightful serving of glazed pomegranate salmon with Afghan rice, (I really love the rice), while my friends had Kabuli Palau and the other had Aushak. After serving our meals and giving us a bit of time to dine, our server came and ask how everything was. My friend who had the Aushak, was a bit hesitant in responding and when questioned as to why - it was because she thought the food was not served as warm as it could have been to make it more palatable. The server offered to take it back, but she declined thinking that it would taste "better" eventually and she didn't want to be a bother. It didn't not and in the end she had barely touched it. Well our server noticed this as well and insisted that she take another dish home with her - on the house - he insisted and, she did. He later brought out homemade ice cream that had rose water that was absolutely refreshing. Such kindness - hospitality in a restaurant - it's everything. We will all return. :-) read more

Used to love this place. I'm wondering if there's new ownership. Menu is different and food is too. It's REALLY greasy! Like plates slip out of your hand greasy. And the flavor is gone. I ordered the vegetarian entree. It was supposed to have many vegetables in a curry sauce. Had potatoes and carrots swimming in oil. $15. I don't think so. Mantoo is still good. Aside from that, I'd move on from this place. Bland, oily and overpriced. Bummer. read more

We love it here. My mom and I have been coming here since they opened down the street from her in downtown Skokie. The new location is so much larger than their last place (even if parking can get a little difficult at times), but the food is just as great as it's always been. We've introduced all sorts of family to the restaurant and they now travel to it from Highland Park and all the way from the West Loop. Even though I live in Madison, every time I come down here to visit family, this is one of the first places we think about eating. Also, with the newer, bigger waiting area, our almost 2 and a half year old that can't sit still has a place to go and sit and entertain himself. Best Afghani food around! I had Lentil Soup, Aushak, and the delicious Pomegranate-Glazed salmon that came with Basmati rice, and hubby had Mantoo - plump, little dumplings filled with onions and finely-ground beef. I want to keep this place a secret. Honestly I love it! The decor inside transports me to a foreign far away land (Afghanistan, Iran/Persia, even Morocco), so good job on that! The space is big and the decor/design is classy and tastefully done. The food is delicious and portion size is great for the price. I love the tea/iced tea options. I have tried the Boranee Banjan (eggplant appetizer) and the Date Salad, both were delicious. I also usually get the Jumbo Shrimp Kabob with Afghan rice. The rice is amazing and I'm not even a fan of rice that much! The jumbo shrimp is perfectly done. This is my go to menu item and I love it. I've also tried the vegetarian platter, which was good. Their best dish the "Kabuli Palau" which we ordered all the time and was excellent was suddenly changed on us - into a big bone with barely any meat on it (more bone than meat) and a box full of rice!!!??? Shocking and embarrassing as we had praised to family and friends and when we ordered it and the food arrived it tasted nothing like what he had earlier. The least they could do is change/update the name and recipe to say it is no longer boneless or delete the item of the menu instead of making it worse. Bad experience. I hope they see this feedback and fix this to what they once had coz it was amazing. read more

I love Kabul House. There is no other place like it in Evanston. A fine dining middle eastern food (Afghan to be specific) experience. Have a special occasion? This is a great spot for people wanting to eat healthy but like a king! The spice and flavors are concentrated and balanced. It is also very consistent. Wow. My brother and I checked this place out today for lunch and boy were we impressed. The place is bright and clean with both a causal yet elegant vibe. The service is friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. Now on to the food. The bread came warm and soft with a delicious chutney spread that had a wonderfully subtle spice to it. We started with stuffed grape leaves. The portion was generous both in size and quantity. The leaves were plump and flavorful stuffed with rice and covered in a delicious sauce. They literally melted in our mouths. The texture of the inside had and almost melted cheese feel to it even though there was obviously none. The flavor was just delicious. Very flavorful but not over powering a perfect balance. For my meal I had the chicken stew which included chicken, tomatoes, onion, peppers, ginger, garlic, cilantro and herbs. It was so good! Warm, flavorful, with generous sized pieces of all the ingredients. All fresh all delicious. I got it with a side of Afghanistan Rice. It was rice with carrots, raisins, chopped veggies, and hummus. The mixture of warm and cold, creamy and crunchy was delightful and the sweet and savory taste was in perfect balance. When the waiter found out it was our first time there he brought us a dessert on the house! It was this wonderful custard with fruit and nuts. It was creamy, nutty, fruity, sweet and delicious. A great way to end a fantastic lunch. Also for all of this plus coffee it was only around 50$ so very reasonable. I can't wait to go back. I highly recommend. read more

There were four of us dining at 8pm on a Wednesday night. I was surprised at how busy they were, that was reassuring to me. There was some afghan bread served and we ordered the mantoo and bolani appetizer. The mantoo is my favorite I get it every time we visit an afghan restaurant, this one was pretty good. For main dishes we ordered the borani banjaan, the kabob grill with dill rice, and last but not least the qabuli. We all loved the qabuli the lamb was so tender the rice was cooked well it was a crowd favorite. For four people this was more than enough food we even had left overs. We didn't have dessert there but the food was great and I will definitely be coming back. read more

A Skokie fave. I'm always stunned at how few suburbanites know about Kabul House because it is SO GOOD and so reasonably priced. Additionally, the new location is super nice! Everything here is a win, from the service, to the food, to the portion sizes, to the price point. This spot is good for a quiet dinner, or they have plenty of space for large parties. To start, I love sharing the vegetarian sampler with whoever I'm with. When I first ate at Kabul House, I was totally unfamiliar with Afghan spices, and they all rock. The cauliflower, eggplant, pumpkin, and spinach on the sampler all taste unique and delicious. When it's cold out, I love their tomato lentil soup. Nom. So hearty and flavorful. For a main dish, you can't go wrong with the chicken boneless kabab. I do not typically order chicken when I go out because it's just not that exciting! However, Kabul House's chicken? Different story. So flavorful and juicy, this is not your average chicken. Get it with the Afghan rice (do not even think about the other rice option) and you won't be sorry. I've also had the shrimp kabob which was great, but I honestly think I prefer the chicken. Overall, goooooo to Kabul House. Excellent place for a cost-efficient and delicious meal.
