Yum! Who knew Afghan food was so delish? not at all your normal middle eastern place, much more saucy, more veggie, more spicy, more appetizers (and they are all good!). Also more greasy -1. Don't ask me to repeat the names of my favs...but give it a try. Lunch is very budget friendly-for around $7 you get soup-the yummy lentil unlike others I've tried- with yummy warm flat bread (I should know the name of this yummy bread) and an entree of your choice and most importantly the vibe is relaxed, so you don't feel like you're at subway or Pita Inn. I have enjoyed Kabul House for years, first in downtown Skokie and now at its new Evanston location. I've also had them cater a dinner for about 30 people, flawlessly. The food is delicious and of the highest quality. The service is excellent. And the catering manager is super easy to work with. Choose from 3 different preparations of rice ( I chose Afghan rice with carrots and raisins) and a choice of soup (delicious lentil/tomato ). Just finished an incredible meal at Kabul House. I've been wanting to go here for a while and it didn't disappoint. There was a bit of a wait as expected for a Saturday night but it was well worth it. The cauliflower appetizer, soups, mahi, and my wife had the salad with chicken were all excellent. Worth the drive. On vacation wkend in the city and decided to take a risk and Uber up to Skokie from dwntown. After 29 years of waiting for authentic Afghan food, the meal was amazing. Family of four with two and a friend under 8 years old loved the food. The mantoo, chicken kabobs (Murgh) and Kabuli palau were hits with all. The rose/pistachio ice cream as well. Best middle eastern food at an incredibly reasonable price! I had: Aush (pronounced aawsh) - which if you are not from the Middle East or never had middle eastern friend is an awesome soup! (My mom makes hers a little thicker by this very good) Combo kabob platter- chicken , lamb and steak koubedeh (which means "crushed" but basically ground steak) with rice all of which were excellent and perfectly seasoned, he brought out a green sauce which was a little spivey and made everything even better! My boyfriend and I, along with 2 of our friends, went here on a lovely Sunday evening for dinner. Our friends had been here before and raved about the food, so we wanted to try it. The food IS fantastic! I loved every bite. I chose the lentil soup and it was very tasty. The other 3 diners had the Aush-Rishta soup and all enjoyed it as well. The accompanying bread was flavorful. I had one skewer of the chicken kabob ("Murgh") and found it to be juicy, flavorful and cooked to perfection. I chose the afghan rice and was blown away by the flavors! It was moist and and topped with amazing-tasting caramelized carrots and raisins! I'm craving it as I write this, it was that good! Also included were a small portion of grilled veggies: tomato, onion, green pepper. Yummy! My boyfriend had the Murgh Chalau: cut-up, sauteed chicken breast. I tried a bit and loved it as well. We both had the mint-basil iced tea and it was refreshing. You can get it sweetened or unsweetened (I chose sweetened) and it had just the right amount of sugar. Our 2 friends also enjoyed their meals. Now, for the bad part of the review, and I'm saddened to write this after enjoying the food so much. There is a MAJOR problem with smoke in the restaurant. Not sure if they need to open a back door, get better exhaust fans or move to a location where the kitchen is further away from the dining area, but it's quite severe. So bad, that my boyfriend went outside (twice!) while waiting for our food. My eyes were burning as well, but not as bad as his. Our clothes smelled smoky when we left. They did (finally) open the front doors, which helped, but by then it was too late. Our friends said that while it was like that the last time they dined there, it was much worse this time around. Also, it was a bit warm inside while we were eating. I wasn't sweating, but a bit more A/C (or ventilation!) would have been nice. The service was average. We had to keep asking for water, we didn't get our iced teas until we asked for them a bit later, and my friends brought a bottle of wine and the server took it away to un-cork it, but didn't notice that he left 1/2 of the cork in the bottle. The food was a little long in coming, but I am TOTALLY fine with that, as I'm assuming it was all cooked to order (which means it wasn't just sitting around waiting in a warming tray). Again, it was DELICIOUS. Portions were generous, and pricing is spot-on. I hope they can resolve the smoke issue, because it really tarnishes some pretty great food. read more

I am vegan. The waiter who served us was very knowledgeable about the menu that will accommodate my preferences. The vegetarian platter (made vegan for me) was delicious to the point that my 2 year old was eating more veggies than usual! My husband had the chicken kabob that was the best that he had ever taste. A family favorite! My neice and nephew love this place, so last week they had a day off school and we went for lunch. We ordered the mantoo lunch special and the vegetable soup. As someone who only eats plant based food, and is particular about the kind of food I eat, I was so happy to find something on the menu without stressing. Kabul House is my favorite restaurant of all time! Their food is so good, it has become my favorite kind of cuisine. The servers are great, they even remembered my family member's birthday and offered a discount when we came back the next year. The food is rich and seasoned with mouthwatering Afghan spices. I salivate just thinking of it. Before the main meal, they serve lentil soup with thick tasty bread that's perfect for dipping. There is a variety of appetizers to choose from, I recommend the Bulanee and the Aushak. Bulanee is a thin dough filled with leeks, potatoes and scallions. The potatoes have a little kick to them, which is balanced out with a refreshing yogurt-mint sauce on the side. Aushak are little dumplings filled with leeks and scallions and topped with a meat sauce. These morsels will explode in your mouth and take your taste buds for a wild ride. I cannot say enough good things about Kabul House, so I apologize for the lengthy review. The best part is the Entrees and I get the same one every single time: Murgh! Murgh is marinated chicken that comes with grilled vegetables and rice. It is the best chicken I've ever had. Ever. It is so juicy and flavorful, I can't stop eating it after I'm full. Lastly, to top off your amazing meal (if you still have room), I'd suggest Firnee for dessert. It is a custard pudding topped with fresh berries. Me and my family absolutely loved this place , until our visit last night. The server took forever to acknowledge that we were there. Wasn't super busy or anything. Then , food took forever to arrive and so did the "already ready " soup which is complimentary. We asked for sauces and never got them . Then , had to remind the server twice to bring it. After we tried to mention that we just wanted to let him know that there was hair in the food, ( in an extremely benign way ) he recommended that we just write the feedback online. So here it is !! The new digs are beautiful. We have been going to KH since it first opened on Dempster many years ago. The food only gets better each time we go. We went on a Saturday night. There we two large parties going on so the remaining tables were few. Luckily they found space for our party of 4. We ordered only appetizers and had a wonderful meal.
