Appetizer: fries
Alina K.

Kaleo's was a decent restaurant, but it wasn't one that I would revisit. The food was a little pricey - especially for the appetizers' serving sizes. Some appetizers are set at market price (for the fish), while others were around $10-16. I ordered the Thai coconut curry with tofu. Compared to other coconut curries, this one was a bit bland. The sauce was under salted but good, but the vegetables and tofu did not absorb its flavor well enough. My friends ordered appetizers for the table to share, and a few of them felt like your typical "bar food." I felt like Kaleo's was a strange mix of upscale / moderately fancy food (steak, poke, etc) and bar food (fries, calamari). Despite the negatives, this was a fun restaurant to visit! They accommodated our large party, and the servers were attentive. I was pleasantly surprised by how fast the kitchen prepared our food, especially because we had ordered about 15 items.

This place is definitely a good option if you're in the area. Lots of menu options that were solid and appeal to everyone. Good beer/drink selection. The quality didn't quite match up with pricing I feel- depending on what you order. I was happy with my fish and chips. But the Caesar salad with $6 added shrimp only came with 3 small shrimp which was sad.

OMG! Thank you for recommending this restaurant. The food is delicious, service is great with good ambiance. We dine in here and left with our stomach is full. I could not say it more, but definitely you have to try this restaurant when you are in Hilo.

Good food, nice ambiance, really good service. Called for reservations for 7:30 on a Friday night and got a 7:40 reservation. This while calling at 7:05 p.m. It is nice open air seating, a bit on the loud side but I didn't mind. One thing that caught me off guard was the drink price. Menu says Bulleit rye is $10. Not bad. I ordered it with an old fashioned; cost ... $20! So if my math is correct, $10 for the liquor and $10 to make it into a drink. Seems a bit ridiculous. Next time, I will get the price of my drink order first! I've been a patron of the original Kaleo's for many years but haven't been back to this area since Covid. I would return but stick to a beer next time.

Thursday evening, late night snack, started off with a couple appetizers, crispy side pork. What a delicious vinegary soy onion sauce. Next was the Kalua pork wontons . I had a glass of Cabernet, the bacon blue cheeseburger with french fries. Service is always excellent live music is played on Friday Saturday Sunday so returning tonight great place to eat.

Amazing!! My daughter and I were both impressed with the ample parking. We made reservations for dinner and when we arrived we were immediately greeted by some of the most friendly staff and were seated immediately. Lots of seating so if you have a large family, no problem. I really did enjoy the open air design of the restaurant. We had the Kalua Pork wontons and the Fresh Ahi Poke to start. Superb!! When it came to dinner we had the Alfredo Pasta with a Blackened Ahi and a Thai Coconut Curry with Shrimp. Let's just say we'll be back for dessert and left completely satisfied. We had a great waitress but unfortunately we didn't get her name. Truly happy with the service.

Great drinks and food when they are open. Do not be surprised when they close for private functions.

When do they have live music and do need a reservation?

I am not sure, we were just passing by, and we decided to eat there instead, however, we had a great time with good food

While they appear to be a casual, local, hippy establishment (and they are). The food and wait is worth every penny, (and pennies are more valuable now). You will hear live music when you approach building. It's bright and colorful, open air and you can feel your inner artist being inspired. The place is packed but you find a seat and listen to the laughter, singing, and sizzles from the kitchen. It's small and bundles of fruit seam to just be around everywhere. Your server gives you a menu and you think. "Oh wow! That's a bit pricy." But you're all in. Considering this place is proud of its farm to table reputation. Yes, nothing goes to waist here and it as fresh as you can possibly get. So you order and wait. And you wait, and you wait. Finally the plate arrives and it's beautiful. A paradise of fruit, veggie filled omelet and some things you're not sure if you can eat them or if it's just decoration. (You can eat them) Have you ever heard of a cranberry hibiscus? I'm not a fan of salsa with my eggs but they make their own from scratch and they also sell it. So I have to at least try it. "What is in this! Magic?" Before you know it a whole days life experience has just happened. There were ups, there were downs, and surprises. Not just from the food but the whole surroundings. Let's just say nothing was left on the plate and I have stories to tell. Our server was the sweetest older lady who you can tell just loved her job and people. In fact all the workers were just rays of sunshine and smiles. Did I just have breakfast or walk into a magical world where time stood still and surrounded me in song and colors. I swear I don't do substances, it's just that good.

We tried the Bomboloni and Nutella Coconut croissant during our initial visit. The Bomboloni reminds me of a malasada but I enjoyed the creamy filling of this so much more. We ended up going back on our last day and tried some of the savory options - the goat cheese pesto croissant and then sausage roll were standouts for us. Enjoyed this place so much we hardly took pictures, but everyone should add this as a stop especially if visiting Volcano National Park!

In fact, except Madam Pele does NOT necessarily keep to the same schedule as the bakery, would try to time my Volcano drives to coincide with Friday, Saturday, or Sunday! Hahah. Today got a sampling of Mediterranean scones (savory with olives and delicious seasonings), croissants, danish, and my favorite... the ube cruffin. Holy Moly Batman... that one item was worth the drive alone! Since there really wasn't any real estate in our tummies, we split everything 3 ways... over the course of the next few hours. Two weeks later, still thinking about that ube cruffin! Would definitely do a repeat on that as well as the Medeterranean scones while trying other items. And as the nice couple infront of us in line mentioned, will have to return for the sister deli across the parking lot. Heard it was featured in Guy Hagi's food vlog. And if its good enough for Guy Hagi its where I want to be my next mealtime!
