When we lived in Kona, we would frequent the Jackie Reyes there. The food was good, but for the price, the entire experience - not even the old, nonfunctional classic car out front - was worth it. BUT, the Jackie Rey's in Hilo has now become our go-to fine restaurant in Hilo town. The building is classic. An old town Hilo bank, with the vault intact. High ceilings, comfortable tables and decore and an artistic antique wooden bar that would be a gem in the crown of any European city. The management and personnel are the most wonderful people. Always happy to accommodate you in the best way they can. After one kamaaina visit the servers will know your name. They'll make you feel welcome and that you are a part of their experience too, something that is nearly impossible to find in other town dining. They have rewards programs for kamaaina which includes a point system that gives you significant savings on your next visit. The food is first rate, from the pupus to the main dishes to the desserts. Sauced and presented in five star fashion, without feeling pretenious. We will be their peskiest and most loyal customer as long as we are in the area. Kudos to Jackie Rey's Hilo. read more

My wife and I went to Jackie Ray's this past Friday. We got a window table and was able to see the activity across the street since it's was Friday downtown open market. If you dine here and are not a big person don't get a booth table as it's the most uncomfortable seating I've ever experienced. The seat is way too far from the table and I needed to lean forward and sit on the edge of the seat. I would recommend getting a table its chair so you be able to adjust yourself to the distance from the table. Server was just Ok and with them placing a water decanter on the table for refill they didn't come around as often. The decanter water has no ice so whatever ice you have in your cup to cool the water. Last time eating at this establishment was better and my only complaint was the window seats next to the picture window and the flys that was buzzing there. Only thing is again there were two big flies buzzing the windows and I had to waved them away. The doors are always shut and only when customers walk in could the flys get in. Staff should walk around before opening and get rid of them. We entered about 5:10 PM so it was opened for just 10 minutes and shouldn't have flys. Air conditioning was on but the temperature was a bit warm and a cooler temperature of maybe 10 degrees be perfect. I had the mochico Ono and it was just ok tasting but on the plate presentation was nice. My wife had the pork chops and she really liked it but said was just a little over cooked. I did try a small sample and to me it was just ok also. ambiance in the restaurant is nice and most of the staff were very attentive. The server we had wasn't and I needed to Get his attention to get my bill even though he had passed multiple times and didn't or should have noticed we were done dining. Probably not be dining again at this establishment again and do know of better dining spots in Hilo. read more

AVOID! Every food item and drink was genuinely terrible. The pork chop we got for the main was genuinely inedible - extremely overcooked. For appetizers, shisito peppers were completely unseasoned and the sauce with the ravioli was extremely sweet for some reason. Even the fresh fish didn't really taste that fresh. I would highly recommend avoiding this one! Service was quite poor too with the waiter unnecessarily rushing us. Drink - we got the big island tea which seemed like what you serve at a chuck-e-cheese birthday party rather than a cocktail. read more

Went here for NYE and ordered nearly everything off their menu. Highlights were the Ahi Tuna Tartare appetizer and the Fresh Catch and Ahi & Coconut Shrimp mains. All of the food was well prepared but not outstanding. Ambiance was quite loud and it was hard to talk and service is very slow, though this may have been impacted by the holidays. We had a lot of better food in Hilo, so personally I'd recommend looking elsewhere. read more

The restaurant opened in 2016 in a landmark (built in 1908) building in downtown Hilo. Keeping with the century old charm, this restaurant provides a glimpse of the old world Hilo. A very popular dinner place, reservations are really required and the meals were excellent. (People seem less happy about eating during happy hour). We started out with a strange drink; Lilikoi Martini. But was a pleasant surprise of tasting new things. And the presentation was unique to us adding to the fun. Our entrees were Mochiko Crusted Fresh Catch that was a mahi mahi fish ornately prepared with sweet potatoes from the neighboring island of Molokai. After two weeks of fish meals, I was ready for comfort food; picked the Chicken & Shrimp Angel Hair Pasta. Good portion of shrimp and great simple meal. Spontaneous late dinner plans became an unexpected stop at Jackie Rey's. So happy they accommodated us and found us a table. They had an Italy lunch and dinner special menu with full courses and Italian wine available to add to your dinner if requested. I chose to try the dinner course with the Cacio e Pepe and it was Devine . My husband ordered the Friday special, surf and turf with the ribeye and lobster with a side of Cesar salad. The steak was a great cut cooked perfectly. My husband is picky about how his steaks are cooked and let me tell you, he left no steak behind . We had a great dinner experience, one to remember and everyone was so nice. We enjoy coming to Jackie Rey's, it is one of our favorite spots to bring friends and ohana. Great food, outrageously slow service I enjoyed the food a lot. It's too bad it took them 20 minutes to take our order. After that they were pretty quick. Our server started serving people that got seated way after us, which really bothered me. We ordered the tacos, the mac nut, the pork ribs, and the flat bread. It was all super good. I have to call them as I experience them. I wanted to give I higher rating, but can't. I agree with the other reviewer who frequents fine dining establishments. The ambiance was very good. We stumbled in and found ourselves in the middle of Happy Hour. I was not happy by the time I left. The Lava Flow had to be returned as it was "lacking liquor". The nearly tasteless Lava Flow came back without a hint of rum taste. The strawberry and pina colada taste was not discernible, and the drink was not great. The glass it came in was undersized, which is a theme of the night. I've had better luck in gin mills in Key West. The clam chowder was a decent attempt at the classic recipe. The chowder was thick, the potatoes were soft, and the clams fresh and tender. It could be improved with less oregano and it was otherwise over spiced. I'm sure it also was lacking other flavors. I split a tiny cup that was half full and left half of it there. The crispy ribs were not exceptionally crispy, but were kind of decent. They also were not finished. The hummus and pita was eh. The hummus was thick, chunky and strong - Moroccan v Egyptian or Greek style? We ate the pita and left the hummus. The medium rare burgers came out medium well. The fries were decent, and half were left. The burger on the happy hour menu is identical to the burger on the main menu in description and price. It was a half decent burger, but not close to being memorable. The steak frites were good, properly cooked. The two virgin Lava Flows came out in drastically inappropriate glassware and cost $11. Not cool. My local Pilsner came out in a brandy sifter. Also over priced and underwhelming. I had anticipated coming back tomorrow to sample other happy hour pupus and the rack of lamb but will pass. Food was good, service was good. The restaurant was really nice. This place is a great place for special occasions and a bit pricey. However, the wait staffs was great she wasn't being too hovering around and was able to get her attentions when needed. Since moving to the big island, I rarely go out to eat since there are not much of restaurants to choose from. Tonight my colleagues and I had a special occasion and my concierge found Jackie Rey's restaurant and I think it a good choice. Will definitely will revisit when opportunities come. read more

I am quite unsure how to address the bad reviews on here, as I have nothing but great things to say. Our waiter was far...far far, too fast no really he was very fast. Greeting us very fast bringing us drinks very fast answering our questions about the meal as I have food, and very fast to get our order in ... that we did not feel pressured to leave just because everything was fast. Celebrated my birthday here over dinner. Place used to be an old bank so the vibe is that of old dark wood and concrete floors & leather seats. Great classic look. We came at the sweet spot of dinner and happy hour. So we took advantage of both. Our server was very helpful and recommended the right dish for me. I ordered the HH crab cake which was okay. Didn't prefer the sweet sauce with the crab. The recommended pork chop however was delicious. The pork was juicy with a thick cut over garlic mash potatoes and spinach. The management & Staff provided exceptional service for a private room dinner. Our Waiter was very friendly and patient with our large group of 16 people. She was very organized with each of our orders and the food/drinks were brought to our table quickly and timely with our large group. We decided to head there for dinner a couple of days ago and the restaurant is really nice, it's an converted old bank building and still has some charm with high ceilings and the safe still there to see. Drinks were fantastic, they know how to mix a good drink. Food was so so, I had their steak which I ordered medium, came completely well done and on the chewy side. The shrimp with the meal were cooked great though and I loved the herb butter. My husband's burger was unfortunately also well done and even a bit black, so a miss on some of the food. Our server was very sweet and she handled a lot of tables, which seemed to be all over the place, very well. They also got a public lot across the street and some street parking and they take reservations through Resy, which makes booking a table super easy. read more

I found this restaurant on Resy. This was a neat, upscale restaurant in Hilo that we enjoyed. I had a kalua pork Cubano sandwich, and my wife had kalua pork tacos, both of which were excellent. For Hawaii, the prices were reasonable. Service was attentive, but not speedy. read more

We stopped by Hilo and needed to eat dinner after a day of exploring. We stopped by without any reservations and were seated right away. The hostess and waiter were friendly and helpful. The restaurant was slightly had the nice casual Hawaiian dress vibe but some customers literally must have came from the beach in tank tops and all. Food wise - ordered the ribs and they were soooo good. I would highly recommend it. It wasn't spicy or anything. The meat just slid off the bone - I wanted more!!! The pork chop came recommended. It was flavorful but after awhile I think the mushrooms with the pork chops aren't my thing but the side of mashed potatoes and veggies were paired really nice with the pork chops. I'd give it a less star for it and would have gone with maybe the ribs as an entree if it was cooked the same ways as the appetizer The kids enjoyed their meal and enjoyed their hamburgers. We stumbled on this by accident. And we are happy we did. We had a party of 6 adults. The menu is varied as we have a person who doesn't eat seafood. I had order the seafood trio; whole you got a lot of food at no point did I feel I over ate. The Ono was grilled to perfection and the shrimp delicious. But the topper was the crab cake with pineapple salsa. YUM! My husband had the fish and chips and felt that the fish was too well done. One of the couples we were with had the pork spring rolls. Tried a bite and would really get again. The other couple were with had gotten the chicken and shrimp with angel hair pasta and she said it was mouthwatering. The portions are generous amounts. Oh my golly wow!! Food is absolutely amazing!! We were on our last night of our vacay and thought to stop by here after a long drive along the coast before going back to our hotel in Kailua-Kona. We had the ahi tuna tower for appetizer which was fantastic. Never had papaya with my ahi but it went so well with yeh sauce and everything in it. We had prime rib which was cooked perfectly to our medium rare and the rib sauce with their horseradish were perfectly paired with the meat. Omagee so good. My hubby got the seafood duo m, seared ahi was cooked perfectly with the shrimp tempura. Oh so good!! Elegant restaurant in Hilo, situated in a spacious high-ceilinged space that used to be a bank! We made reservation for 7:30 pm and showed up on the dot, having parked a few blocks away. They seated us and took our food and drinks orders, which started arriving soon after. The drinks were ok, but the food was quite good. We polished off the crispy pork ribs, artichoke dip with crostini, coconut-crusted baked Brie, and ahi tuna tower in short order, while sipping on our Mai Tai's and Lilikoi-tini's and Mango Smashes and Pomegranate spritzes. It's on the street corner with parking in a gravel lot across Keawe St. It's an upscale booth and table setup in a historic building which used to be a bank. Service was prompt and attentive. I ordered the Market Fish & Chips, which was Striped Marlin. My food came on a very hot dish, as warned by my server. The shoe string fries were crispy, moist and lightly salted. The fish had a light crunchy brown panko breading was mild, tender and flaky lightly salted. The tartar sauce was tasty and also lightly salted. Everything was very tasty, probably due to the salt. This place has a reputation for being pricey, but I didn't think they're out of line based on my experience for what you get. Visited while in vacation in Hilo and we're disappointed . I do not leave negative reviews often but it's necessary. Food was very good, prime rib delicious. The service was terrible. We did not receive our appetizer and the waiter was surprised we didn't. We waited a significantly long time for our food with may other customers coming and going before we did. The waiter offered a half assed apology for the appetizer and removed the cost at our request. We rarely saw him , where other table were regularly attended to. We regularly visit Hilo and this was the first time at this restaurant. At this price point we vwere very disappointed by the service and would not come back again. read more

There are two Jackie Rey's on the big island, one in Hilo and one in Kona. We visited the Hilo establishment, and the overall experience was fantastic. Jackie Rey's prides itself on its creative food preparation, overall style, ambiance, and service. Believe me, it doesn't disappoint. Nice restaurant in Hilo. It's located in a beautiful building which used to be a bank. Two large vaults can be seen in the back near the bathroom and bar. The food is a bit on the costly side but it is a nicer restaurant and the food was delicious. Service was also great. I highly recommend the seafood tower. Everything in it was so delicious, especially the Thai curry sauce and ube! The chicken and tomato pasta was very fresh tasting. The coffee cream brulee was also good but the hard sugar crust became too much (too sticky and hard on the teeth) but we loved the custard underneath. read more
