As always a pleasant evening, Let's Go and eat some good grinds. Tucked away I a tiny little center. Close To the shell station and McDonald's. Parking is not a problem. Seated and given menus. So many choices, Phad Thai chicken is a go to in any restaurant. Family went for the chicken, beef and pork ribs. All except the noodles came with a bowl of rice. We also ordered the tasty crab Rangoon. This came with some sweet and sour sauce. All the food came out in super delicious large portions. Ended up with four large Togo containers. The curry tasted nothing like curry. Not even remotely close. We shoulda known better, when we went in and were the only ppl there. We didn't even take our left overs home, it was seriously lacking in flavor and the veggies tasted like canned vegetables, it was lacking freshness and spice. And for the price we were charged, we won't be going back. I wish I had more nice things to say, but we work hard for our money and food is already very expensive on Big Island, so we just wanted to warn others. Perhaps the chef was having a bad day. We've been to Peppercorn a few times now and have fallen in love with this place. They have a smaller, clean eating area for those dining in. Customer service for the most part has been wonderful but there has been a time or two that I've encountered a staff member who was maybe having a bad day. I don't care so much about customer service -- as long as the food is good I'll keep coming back. Some of our favorite dishes include the cucumber salad (unless you're a cilantro hater), the crispy eggplant (best if eating there since it can get a little soggy if taking out), and the pad Thai. Once we got one of their stir fry udon dishes that was just good, but not great like the other dishes we've had. So overall, their dishes are very flavorful and quite plentiful. However, I will say for a place with "spice house" in their name I wouldn't call any of their dishes overtly spicy although I've never asked about increasing the spice level on any of their dishes. Regardless, I'd say it's a spot definitely worth checking out! read more

This place is located 26 mins away from Volcano National Park. The food itself is homestyle cooked. Worthnmentioning that they use local produce for the most part. The portions are decent. The taste is okay. The restaurant is clean and quiet. What stood out most was the service. We liked the straw mushrooms in the Tom Kha soup and upon request they were able to accommodate our request for a mushroom dish - straw mushrooms + Shiitake mushrooms + basil chicken. This is the level of hospitality I would always give 5 stars. I would definitely stop by here whenever I visit Volcano National Park. My rating of 3 stars is solely based on the taste of the food. It would be unfair to places that do have tastier food for this cuisine. Sometimes what we need is something that is able to satisfy us at that point in time. Prices are very reasonable- especially when you're there for lunch. Waitress was very friendly and accommodating. We couldn't have been more pleased with the food, service and prices. This place was clean, plenty of parking in front and around, and bathroom was spotless. Good service, and spacious inside... The only thing was the food was okay. Name has "spice" in it but our green curry and basil beef was very mild. Green curry was more like cream stew and totally different from what I had as "green curry" in Thailand or other Thai restaurants. Fried egg roles were good though! Hot, crunchy and tasty. As expected, the food was great! In comparison to other restaurants that make Shrimp with Mixed Vegetables, theirs is HUUGE! The pork eggrolls were great too - sauce was tangy and sweet. Service here is awesome, super sweet lady and polite to others. If you have any questions on your dish, never hesitate to ask! The inside is always cool although the front door is open, but it's clean and everything is meet and organized. There's decor, plants, and more than enough lighting to enjoy your meal with a partner. Wow What a GEM!! We found this place on yelp, of course. And it was easy to find. The interior of the restaurant is very small. Less than 40 seats. When we arrived there was a large party set up in the middle of about 14 people. They appeared to be having a great time. Then there's tables around the perimeter of the room. We were greeted and seated quickly. In just a minute or two, our waiter (Grayson) came over and took our drink orders and we perused the menu. I like how the menu is set up with the various categories (Pork, chicken, noodles, etc.) I chose the Drunken Chicken, Wifey had the Kung Pao Chicken, and we started off with an order of the Vegetable egg rolls. The food essentially all came out at the same time, so we got our entrees and the egg rolls together. The Food was HOT! The egg rolls were crunchy, the veggies inside were fresh and crunchy, the flavors were great. The Drunken Chicken was incredible. The flavors were great, there was plenty of chicken - along with the noodles and vegetables. The vegetables and noodles were not mushy and overcooked. They were perfect! The Kung Pao Chicken was awesome as well. It wasn't super spicy, so if you like it on the "wild" side, request extra. The flavors were very good, veggies perfectly cooked, plenty of chicken, and the white rice was good too. I noticed that they used local produce and you can TASTE the difference. They tasted fresh. In fact, I usually take out the green peppers, because I don't care for the flavor. Wifey said that the green peppers were good and convinced me to taste one. I did and they were very good. Flavorful and slightly sweet. I left SOME of them in. The portions are very good sized. I'm a big eater and we had to take some of both meals back to the AirB&B. Great for breakfast the next day. Overall, I have to say that this is the best Chinese "Asian" Type food we have EVER Eaten. Everything was so fresh, and the food was hot when it arrived at the table. And the service was great. They checked on us, but not intrusive. We talked with Grayson for a minute and recommended that they open a restaurant where we live in Sacramento, California. COINCIDENTALLY, her son happens to live there, and she's trying to get him involve in the business. The restaurant is Very Clean. They obviously have a keen attention to detail and it shows. They are a BYOB so I had a martini with it. Wish I had brought a white crisp wine to go with it. Serving sizes were perfect. The calamari is still the best yet. Roasted hot peppers and light crispy coating. The Pad Thai had Roman type noodles, I'm use to thick Thai wide noodles. It was more noodles then chicken, yet I was satisfied with every bite. It was an awesome surprise they had a box of dragon fruit for sale by register! Huge white dragon fruit for $4! We bought 5. This is our new favorite spot to go to. Having Peppercorn Spice House join the food scene in Keaʻau was just what the doctor prescribed. We just had dinner here, and I loved it. If you're familiar with the previous owners of Lemongrass across the street, well, they're back! I was so excited to hear that they opened Peppercorn Spice House because Lemongrass hasn't been the same since. Anyhoo, let's talk food cause my food was outrageously delicious. Here's what I got and what I rate it (out of five stars). Crispy Eggplant Hot and Sour Soup Katsu Curry Vegetable Egg Roll The crispy eggplant was sensational. I could eat that every day for the rest of my life and be happy. Think of seasoned eggplant coated in cornstarch and fried to a crisp, then tossed/coated in a sweet and salty soy and sesame-based glaze topped with toasted sesame seeds and green onions. The hot and sour soup was exquisite! It was perfectly savory, spicy, and tangy. The mushrooms added a nice earthiness, and the peppers added some heat. The eggs gave the soup some richness, and the tofu added texture. I could've tanked a whole pot of this stuff for sure. My katsu curry was another hit. The chicken was masterfully prepared. I got everything I wanted out of it. It was juicy, tender, perfectly breaded, skillfully fried, and covered in a luscious and savory curry. That was a nice and welcomed change because I'm more used to Japanese-style katsu curry, where the curry is on the sweeter side. I could definitely get used to this. As for the vegetable egg rolls, that was a NO for me. They were bland and had no flavor. If I didn't have the sauce to dip it in, I most likely wouldn't have finished it. The sauce was indeed the "sugar" that helped the medicine go down if you catch my drift. These definitely need some work. I'll try the pork ones the next time I go. I hope those are better. Overall I was VERY pleased. I am thrilled to have PSH in Keaʻau Town so close to work. And on a side note, the restaurant's interior is beautiful. The owners did a fantastic job with the renovations. Very happy to see the former owners of Lemongrass back in town with a new venture, Peppercorn Spice House Asian Cuisine. It's a welcome addition to Keaau, since there are very few dining options once you leave Hilo. It's a "mom and pop" venture with "Mom" in the front of the house and "Pop" cooking in back. They're set off the street, in the back of the parking lot that also contains McDonalds and Shell gas, next to the farmers market that had to relocate when the new Longs was built. (The location was formerly a Thai restaurant.) They completely re-did the interior, and it looks great....bright and airy inside, with refinished light wood trim, all-new tables and chairs, and new lighting. There are partitions separating the tables, so it gives a booth-like feel, with a nice sense of privacy. We were there on their opening night. We ordered fried shrimp appetizer (8 shrimp, $13), Basil Tofu Eggplant ($17), Honey Garlic Spareribs (pork, $18), Yellow Curry with chicken, carrots, onion, and potato ($20), a canned soda ($2.50), and Thai iced tea ($4). Each dish included a small bowl of steamed white rice. Takeout containers were 50 cents each. They told us you are welcome to bring your own beer or wine. The standout dish of the night was the Basil Tofu Eggplant. This was really a great dish, with big chunks of Chinese eggplant, fresh basil leaves, onion, carrots, tofu, and a glossy flavorful sauce with a little heat. My partner doesn't normally eat eggplant or tofu, but even he loved it. The other dishes were good, but we agreed we'll explore the rest of the menu, before we reorder them. We'll definitely repeat the Basil Tofu Eggplant ! Entertainment for the evening was watching two random guys run around the parking lot trying to catch the wild chickens. Also, a neighboring table celebrating a baby's birthday gave us slices of cake. Bonus ! What can I say, it's the Big Island ! Great job getting renovated and open, and welcome back to Keaau ! It was our 1st trying this restaurant since they changed mgmt. 2yrs ago. Good location. Good parking. Handicap accessible! Interior modern and welcoming. Their menu is listed on the entrance door for viewing but of course they have full menu upon seating. Their menu is not overwhelming with selections but great selections to choose from. The staff is very friendly and will explain your order if you have questions. Didn't know what to oder so just viewed other table orders and whatever smelt delicious and looked appetizing , we ordered! lol. Ended up getting the crispy noodle combination and shrimp with vegetables. Both choices were very flavorful and vegetables still semi-crisp and plenty of cha siu, chicken and plump shrimp in the combination . The shrimp with vegetables was very good also and filled with broccoli, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, mushroom, celery -oh my!!!! And all semi-crisp still. Yummmmm! Not too salty or msg used.
