I would say that the very best thing on the menu is the Teriyaki Flank Steak Appetizer ($19)....this thing is SICK. We ordered the appetizer and it is the most unique Teriyaki steak I have ever had. The teriyaki sauce is rich and just amazing. Just order it. I am still craving it. A mix of locals and tourists, this establishment had a little bit of everything. A $10 onion soup, which was delicious. A tuna tower, a bit lackluster in flavor. A "dynamite fishbowl", that my daughter and husband loved!! The fish and chips of the day was marlin. It was very flavorful, but very dry. And the real reason for the four stars was because we ordered the poke bowl appetizer along with a soda and beer. The appetizer was delivered. We live on Oahu but when we come to the Big Island and we're in the Hilo area we always go to this place. The entire restaurant is outside but it's covered. I actually really like the environment. Staff is always welcoming and quick to refill waters and check on you. Last month we stopped by and I got the fish and chips, subbed sweet potatoe fries, and my honey got the poke tower. We also got the mushroom appetizer which really needed salt but after we got some and added it they were perfect. Really good food and a nice variety of options. read more

This is my go to place when visiting the Big Island!!! My wife and I have been blessed to travel here for over 30 yrs. If you travel to the Wet Side of the Island you must check it out. They have a great location. They are only a couple of blocks from the farmer's market. There's plenty of parking. They have an excellent selection of happy hour drinks And food to chose from. Their entrees and meals include locally sourced fresh seafood and vegetables. I cannot say enough about their wait staff and Employees. After visiting Akaka Falls, our party of nine headed to Pineapples Island Fresh Cuisine for a late lunch. The place was quite busy, and we waited about 25 minutes for a table. The ambiance is casual, with an open-air atmosphere and a bar. Our waitress, Sandy, was super friendly and attentive. We ordered the Hilo local plate, fish and chips, a pineapple burger, kalbi ribs, jerk chicken wrap, fresh catch sandwich (ono) and other entrées. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. I shared a Hilo local plate with my husband, and Sandy kindly offered to divide the meal and brought us two plates. We really appreciated her thoughtfulness. The beef ribs were tender, the BBQ kalua pork was tasty, and the house mango chili slaw was yummy. Everyone in our group enjoyed their dishes and their meals. I did notice that the menu on their website isn't updated, so several dishes were a bit more expensive than expected. Loved the vibe of the restaurant, but I wasn't in the mood for the veggie options on the menu except for the nachos. However, the nachos were a big disappointment. The chips were really broken up, and there was just too much cheese for my liking. The cheese didn't even fully melt since there was just so much piled on. Ate what I could and genuinely felt bad wasting food. The portobello sandwich was decent, and the fries were good. If I came back, I'd probably try the veggie pasta. The service was okay, nothing that really stood out. We were able to find street parking easily, but we were visiting during the off-season (February) and went after typical lunch hours, so that may have played a part. read more

While visiting, this was our first stop and it was great. The service, vibe and food were all amazing. We were able to get there in time for happy hour and had a great spot right at the bar. Food 5/5 - Ordered calamari, fish & chips, and grilled fresh catch. Calamari was delicious, as the panko batter was flaky, and the calamari strips were tender without any chewiness. Fish & chips, the batter was good (not very oily) and the marlin fish was not dry. Steak fries and salad were fine. The grilled fresh catch was also good, although the slice of ahi did look a little small. Pina colada and pineapple no pow were refreshing. Price $$ - Price is fair with the portions that are served, other than the grilled fresh catch. We chose Pineapples Island Fresh Cuisine because it's one of the highest-rated sit-down spots in Hilo, but it ended up being just okayyyy. The menu felt very "meh"...nothing particularly exciting or memorable. The cocktails looked great in photos, so we ordered the piña colada flight, but it tasted like there was little to no rum in it. Pretty presentation, but very mediocre overall. Food was just okay. The burger wasn't bad, but definitely not anything special. The fried shrimp dish was disappointing and lacked flavor. The big letdown was the ambiance. We were seated facing the street and parking lot the entire time ...no view...., just sad street. Overall, it didn't live up to the hype. The staff was genuinely lovely, and the indoor/outdoor setup nailed the vacation vibe. The food and drinks, though, were pretty uninspired. It hit the spot in the moment, but the whole experience leaned into the kitsch you'd expect from the signage and marketing. Menu-wise, I'd recommend the burgers over the fish and chips. We stopped here for dinner while we were in Hilo after visiting the waterfalls. Almost everyone in my party ordered the coconut crusted fish and we were all very happy with our choice. It was so delicious! For dessert we tried a Hawaiian favorite dessert, Haupia Dream. It was fine but nothing amazing. The service was good, the ambiance was great, and I loved the special tropical touches like the tiki style glasses. We didn't get one of their pineapple drinks but those looked great! We loved our stop here. It was a cool open air restaurant, in downtown Hilo, in the middle of a few blocks of shops - right across from the supermarket. We had a short wait for a table at noon, but were seated in less than 15. Our waitress was super fun and bubbly and answered our questions about the menu. We tried a few things, all of which were epic! The ahi tower was perfection - the tuna tasty and fresh with a generous amount of avocado and crispy won ton chips on bed of basmati rice. All the sauces swirled around with some edamame. The burgers were delicious, and the battered shrimp app sooooo good. We had some pineapple margaritas which were spot on! This was such a wonderful find for my family's vacation. Our server was absolutely lovely, the restaurant is in the open air, and the pricing is very reasonable compared to other locations in Hawaii! Visited Pineapples in a Sunday night. The wait was supposed to be 20 minutes but they sat us pretty quickly. We went to Puna chocolate co across the street. Wait was actually 10 minutes. Service was great. Our server came over and made her recommendations. We decided on the Hilo local plate which was delicious. My friend and I shared the plate and they were able to split the plate on too two different plates, which was so nice of them. The plate included a little bit of everything and everything was so delicious and hot. The jasmine rice was so good. I tried to have a little bit of everything at once so I can get all the flavors together and it was delicious. For dessert with got the Lilikoi cheesecake. I'm a biiiig fan of Lilikoi and it was so delicious. The slice was a decent size and can be shared. I didn't want it to end, it was so good. Highly recommend this spot ! There was also live music with a lady playing guitar solo and singing! Service was amazing! We never had to wait long to order/get the bill. We were most impressed by the fact that the waitress made sure to split our Hilo local plate into two plates to make it much easier to share! We almost thought we had received two orders because of how well-plated they were. - Poke tower (8/10): Solid choice for an appetizer! There were ample portions of poke, and the flavors were nice. Not a super stand out dish though. - Hilo local plate (9.5/10): If you want to taste a wide range of Hawaiian cuisine in one dish, I would highly recommend getting this one! The Kalbi ribs were sooo good! They were juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor. The Kalua pork was pretty good, and both meats paired well with the rice which had an interesting savory haupia sauce drizzled on it. The mango chili slaw and pineapple salsa added a nice tang to balance everything out. - Triple lilikoi pie (5/10): Wayyy too sweet and sugary for our liking, and you can barely taste the lilikoi flavor. We ended up just picking at the graham cracker crust and couldn't finish the rest. We loved Pineapples! We were a bit sad at first because the reason I picked this restaurant is because online on their menu, etc it says they use Maui Gold pineapples but they don't that anymore. I assume because they're more expensive but my husband was looking for a Maui Gold pineapple through our entire trip & couldn't find one so that was sad. We didn't wait at all even though the restaurant was super busy. We sat at a high top in the bar. Ordered the Pineapple Pow which is very fun drink served in a Dole pineapple. It had pineapple, watermelon & orange flavor. For entrees my husband got one of the fish dishes and I went for the lava burger. Good flavor, well cooked & every sauce I tried here was absolutely delicious. The lilikoi jalapeño bbq sauce was so good - sweet, a little spicy, and with a lot of flavor. We ended up getting a free dessert because the kitchen was extremely backed up, we didn't complain & weren't in a hurry. The waitress checked in on us many times & continuously apologized even though we said it was totally not a big deal - she was spectacular and brought us the lilikoi pie for free. Not something I normally would've tried but I would HIGHLYYYY recommend it. It was lovely and creamy with a mild sweet flavor. Delicious. We ordered the Pokémon Tower to start with some wings which were a hit with all the different sauces on the side. Must haves! We never ran out of water, and as soon as our drinks ran low they asked if we would like another. Open air restaurant with live music! My girlfriend and I were seated very quickly at the bar, which was a relief because the line was very long. When I visited, they had a shortage of pineapples so they were not able to create their signature drink for me in the original way they had to re-create it with canned pineapples still delicious but I wish I got a chance to experience the full drink. As far as food goes. I ordered the Hilo local platter. It was such a well-rounded meal. A short rib was well marinated, but super tender and flavorful. It came with some pork and also rice with a for Blanc that had dairy in it which the menu did not say, but thankfully, we caught. They were nice enough to send us a rice replacement free of charge when we raise that we had actually had a dairy allergy. I will definitely be back here if I'm ever in Hilo again. read more

This is our go-to spot for lunch and dinner whenever we have friends or family in town. Mike and Donna have assembled an incredible team of servers and cooks and every meal we've had there has been awesome. The service is always wonderful and I love how the staff all work together.
