Came as a party of 2 at noon on a Sunday, and we were seated right away! The ambiance definitely gives a nice island sports bar vibe. Only street parking is available. There was also live music with a lady playing guitar solo and singing! Service was amazing! We never had to wait long to order/get the bill. We were most impressed by the fact that the waitress made sure to split our Hilo local plate into two plates to make it much easier to share! We almost thought we had received two orders because of how well-plated they were. - Poke tower (8/10): Solid choice for an appetizer! There were ample portions of poke, and the flavors were nice. Not a super stand out dish though. - Hilo local plate (9.5/10): If you want to taste a wide range of Hawaiian cuisine in one dish, I would highly recommend getting this one! The Kalbi ribs were sooo good! They were juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor. The Kalua pork was pretty good, and both meats paired well with the rice which had an interesting savory haupia sauce drizzled on it. The mango chili slaw and pineapple salsa added a nice tang to balance everything out. - Triple lilikoi pie (5/10): Wayyy too sweet and sugary for our liking, and you can barely taste the lilikoi flavor. We ended up just picking at the graham cracker crust and couldn't finish the rest. We chose Pineapples Island Fresh Cuisine because it's one of the highest-rated sit-down spots in Hilo, but it ended up being just okayyyy. The menu felt very "meh"...nothing particularly exciting or memorable. The cocktails looked great in photos, so we ordered the piña colada flight, but it tasted like there was little to no rum in it. Pretty presentation, but very mediocre overall. Food was just okay. The burger wasn't bad, but definitely not anything special. The fried shrimp dish was disappointing and lacked flavor. The big letdown was the ambiance. We were seated facing the street and parking lot the entire time ...no view...., just sad street. Overall, it didn't live up to the hype. The ambiance is casual, with an open-air atmosphere and a bar. Our waitress, Sandy, was super friendly and attentive. We ordered the Hilo local plate, fish and chips, a pineapple burger, kalbi ribs, jerk chicken wrap, fresh catch sandwich (ono) and other entrées. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. I shared a Hilo local plate with my husband, and Sandy kindly offered to divide the meal and brought us two plates. We really appreciated her thoughtfulness. The beef ribs were tender, the BBQ kalua pork was tasty, and the house mango chili slaw was yummy. Everyone in our group enjoyed their dishes and their meals. I did notice that the menu on their website isn't updated, so several dishes were a bit more expensive than expected. Loved the vibe of the restaurant, but I wasn't in the mood for the veggie options on the menu except for the nachos. However, the nachos were a big disappointment. The chips were really broken up, and there was just too much cheese for my liking. The cheese didn't even fully melt since there was just so much piled on. Ate what I could and genuinely felt bad wasting food. The portobello sandwich was decent, and the fries were good. If I came back, I'd probably try the veggie pasta. The service was okay, nothing that really stood out. It was so delicious! For dessert we tried a Hawaiian favorite dessert, Haupia Dream. It was fine but nothing amazing. We visited Hilo almost 10 years ago and ate at Pineapples and I remembered really liking it so instead of trying somewhere new- we headed back here for lunch. We tried a few things, all of which were epic! The ahi tower was perfection - the tuna tasty and fresh with a generous amount of avocado and crispy won ton chips on bed of basmati rice. First off, I loved the vibe! Every table was having a good time! I didn't see a frown in the place. Second, the drinks were very good and very reasonable!! We ordered the Pokémon Tower to start with some wings which were a hit with all the different sauces on the side. Must haves! This was such a wonderful find for my family's vacation. Our server was absolutely lovely, the restaurant is in the open air, and the pricing is very reasonable compared to other locations in Hawaii! We loved Pineapples! We were a bit sad at first because the reason I picked this restaurant is because online on their menu, etc it says they use Maui Gold pineapples but they don't that anymore. I assume because they're more expensive but my husband was looking for a Maui Gold pineapple through our entire trip & couldn't find one so that was sad. We didn't wait at all even though the restaurant was super busy. We sat at a high top in the bar. Ordered the Pineapple Pow which is very fun drink served in a Dole pineapple. It had pineapple, watermelon & orange flavor. For entrees my husband got one of the fish dishes and I went for the lava burger. Good flavor, well cooked & every sauce I tried here was absolutely delicious. The lilikoi jalapeño bbq sauce was so good - sweet, a little spicy, and with a lot of flavor. We ended up getting a free dessert because the kitchen was extremely backed up, we didn't complain & weren't in a hurry. The waitress checked in on us many times & continuously apologized even though we said it was totally not a big deal - she was spectacular and brought us the lilikoi pie for free. Not something I normally would've tried but I would HIGHLYYYY recommend it. It was lovely and creamy with a mild sweet flavor. Delicious. A friend and I visited this tourist filled spot while on the big island. This is an open air restaurant right behind the Saturday farmers market. We were told 25 minute wait so our name was placed on the list for first available seating. I moved the car as parking is limited and is 2 hours and we would exceed our time while dining. When I returned a good 20 mins later we still hadn't been called, my friend had been waiting. At the 40 minute mark and noticing parties of 2 who arrived after us being seated ( no they didn't have reservations) we inquired, and were told we were " next". Eventually we were seated. They have a local playing music with a ukulele, guitar, harmonica the vibe is island 200%. Catering to tourists with umbrella tiki glass drinks or choose any drink in a pineapple shell for $6 extra. The menu offers things like fresh fish of the day sandwich, rice bowl with fish and veggies, burgers, fries, calamari, hurricane shrimp, kahlua pork, chicken and pasta entrees and salads. There are gluten free and vegetarian options. Our server was great, (Jaray?) and attentive. He was so patient! Overall the food was good and big portions. We didn't clear our plates due to portions not taste. We requested coconut shrimp which were huge , cost $16 for 4. The other dishes were $22-$24. Some salads were less and larger entrees cost more. Typical prices for the Hilo area. There's a bar also and overall pretty enjoyable, very family friendly too. Enjoy your time on the Big island and fill your belly. read more

Open air restaurant with live music! My girlfriend and I were seated very quickly at the bar, which was a relief because the line was very long. When I visited, they had a shortage of pineapples so they were not able to create their signature drink for me in the original way they had to re-create it with canned pineapples still delicious but I wish I got a chance to experience the full drink. As far as food goes. I ordered the Hilo local platter. It was such a well-rounded meal. A short rib was well marinated, but super tender and flavorful. It came with some pork and also rice with a for Blanc that had dairy in it which the menu did not say, but thankfully, we caught. They were nice enough to send us a rice replacement free of charge when we raise that we had actually had a dairy allergy. I will definitely be back here if I'm ever in Hilo again. read more

We loved it here we ate here two days in a row! Came back mainly for the drinks and the Furikake Shrimp appetizer ($16). Furikake Shrimp Appetizer $16 - four pieces of very large shrimp perfectly breaded, deep fried, and sprinkled with furikake, served on a bed of shredded cabbage and a super yummy miso sesame vinaigrette. I asked for extra sauce on day 2 and poured it all over the cabbage and ate that like a mini-salad. The shrimps tasted like mini-lobsters. So good. Portabello Mushroom Burger $18 - a towering burger of fresh veggies, cheese, and juicy portabello served with large cut fries. It was so big that I took the other half to go. Kalua pork Burger $18 - loaded with K-pig. Husband loved it. He ate it all, so no leftovers for him! The DRINKS: Fabulous!! Margarita Samplers $16 - you can mix and match your own. I created a mix of Lychee, Cherry, Hibiscus Lavendar and Coconut. Favorite was the Lychee, hands down. Sizes look large in all the Yelp photos, but the size is about 4 ounces each. Buzz factor 1.5/5 Pele's Hot and Spicy Margarita $13 - it was not that spicy, but flavored just right, with fresh jalapenos added in for a nice touch. It was served in a large glass, which was a good value, because on Oahu you get half the size for more. It was garnished fabulously on the second day with a mini umbrella by our hostess and bartender, Hannah!!! Buzz factor 2/5 but refreshing. Ordered it two days in a row. Overboard IPA $8 - one of husband's favorite. A nice pour. Service: both days were fabulous but a shout out to Hannah who was at the bar mainly. She seated us promptly, greeted us, got our drinks and food out in a flash, all with a smile. She made our second day to Pineapple's extra special. Return factor: 110%. The servers were so kind and sang happy birthday for my friends dad, and they pretended to be shocked I'm over 21 (it was flattering). This was one of my favorite restaurants we ate at while visiting the Big Island. It's a really awesome open air restaurant and they had live music. We didn't have a reservation and we decided to eat at the bar because there was no wait. They've first thing that caught my eye was their signature pineapple drink. This is a must. It's beautiful and fun to look at but also tastes amazing. They have really fun flights here too. I highly recommend the Hurricane shrimp appetizer. The shrimp were monstrous. They were cooked perfectly and delicious! My husband and I both got the coconut crusted fresh catch, which was Ahi for us that day. Absolutely to die for. Everything was just so good. Make sure you save room for dessert because you're going to want to try their Haupia Dream which is the most delicious coconut dessert. I would 100% go back next time I'm in the area. I decided to pick rice and the garlic mashed potatoes, both were amazing I personally preferred eating the scallops with rice but that's my taste buds. The piña colada flight was also delicious, my favorites out of the 4 flavors we chose were the hibiscus and lychee flavors. The other 2 we got were mango and passion, which were good as well but the lychee and hibiscus were exceptional for me. Overheard guy at table next to us saying to his out of town guests, that "this place is kinda expensive and very touristy" but I didnt get that vibe.
