The customer service wasn't rude, but it felt robotic--there was very little warmth, personality, or the kind of hospitality that makes a neighborhood diner special. Unfortunately, it looks like the original diner is no longer in use, at least when we went, and a separate bar area had opened next to it where they now seat everyone. Though parking is plenty, it was hard to understand the layout when we first drove in. They still use a gravel/dirt/grass lot, which isn't a big deal, but the spaces of where we could park weren't immediately clear. I was impressed by the inexpensive options on their menu though and the portion sizes were big. However, those are the only good points. We ordered biscuits and gravy, breakfast potatoes, and their Pig in a Pancake, which wraps a breakfast sausage in a pancake. The food was overly salty and my pancake was very dry. No syrup was brought out; we had to go grab it ourselves. Same with eating utensils, which they now use disposable plastic ware. Paper towels are on each table, the only convenience. Though the employees here are nice, they did the bare minimum and never checked in on us after bringing us our food. I'm sad to see that this place has gone downhill.

I reviewed BBD a year ago for the first time after their initial opening and gave them high marks. Like so many places, though, BBD has not maintained the quality of their grand opening. My wife's broccoli and cheese soup was obviously a mix with very little broccoli, very little cheese, and bland. The tomatoes on my house salad were bad probably old. The corn muffins we received were cold and dense and probably straight from the cooler. Our waitress brought our food then didn't come back until we flagged her down to get our check. She was covering about 5 tables and spent most of her time in the kitchen. A runner brought our food out. It seems that Black Bear is going through that inevitable drop in quality that comes with an inability to sustain continuity in their kitchen and wait staff. Hopefully they will work through this problem and return to the quality we are have come to expect over the last year.

Asked the server about the salad & corn bread and apparently now you have to request what what you are already paying for. I'm not sure if they serve breakfast. At one time they were serving breakfast, then they stopped. Service is nice but they can get really busy so patience is key depending on the day.
