So here's the thing-it's not that cheap. And if you read my reviews you know that I value a good value. But I do shop here because inexpensive meat can be purchased here ...but you will need freezer space or the ability to split things with friends coop style. To get these good deals you are going to have to purchase massive amounts. The people who work here are nice. It's not crowded and mostly caters to restaurants. They have a whole lot of Torani syrup, catsup, pancake mix, frozen fish, to go containers and the like. If you are in the neighborhood it's worth checking out. read more

I hardly ever do this but the customer service was that great! I needed to find a specific item for an Instacart order and the cashier named Unique was super helpful. It's hard to find people that work in retail that really go out of their way and take the time to listen to customers and help them find what they're looking for. Most of the time store clerks just point you in the general direction of the item and leave you searching on your own. Employees like Unique need to be at the top of the ladder because they are professional and they are the epitome of what excellent customer service looks like. Give her a raise! Promote her! like I said, I don't think I've ever been compelled to leave a review on Yelp so obviously she was helpful! read more

I absolutely love this store, the wide selection of goods and meat products accompanied general chef stuff, is outstanding. I recently bought some smoked sausage and cheese goods from here, had another pleasant experience with no hassle parking and a security guard in the parking lot. This used to be a Smart and Final, then it changed to the Cash and Carry, and now it's the US Foods Chef'store! Ran in to try to get some cans/cups of mandarin oranges, but (sigh), they didn't have any. It seems that they carry lots of big, restaurant size cans/containers of different items, but not a whole lot of regular sized items. They have a refrigerated area with packaged meat and dairy, but I didn't really peruse any of that. Probably a good alternative to Costco. There were no lines at the counters, so if you're in need of some heavy-duty shopping, this might be okay, but I think I'd stick with Costco for my warehouse shopping. read more

It was quite a pleasant surprise to return to the old Smart and Final and find this jewel. Now known as The Chef's store. This once dainty, warehouse-style, bulk food-supply store has kept the same style. However, it now offeres what we foodies/chefs/cooks/bakers/restaurateurs alike, love. Food; (dry, fresh, frozen, canned), and many specialty supplies from every where. Many of which you cannot find anywhere and some other surprises for the public.. As I walk the twenty plus isles of this food factory next to foodies of all walks of life. I couldnt help but think about the whole process and feel euphoric. From the makers, manufactures, processors, trucks, drivers, stores, offices, and employees to the people. I am glad and grateful to be able to shop here and cook with these products. read more

It's basically like Costco for groceries, but better in a couple ways: * No membership! Even though this store is geared towards restaurant owners, anyone can shop here for free. The items just come in bigger sizes, similar to what you'd find at Costco. They also sell some items in single sizes as well. * Quick moving lines. You don't load anything onto the conveyor belt to check out. The cashier takes a scanner and scans all your items on the cart, and they're really quick at it. This makes the checkout process so much faster and I've never had to wait very long in line. * Enough space. Even during the busiest times at the beginning of lockdown, this place never gets too busy, compared to Costco's long lines. read more

Great place to get food service items. I don't run a restaurant, but I've found the stuff here useful when I need to serve a large number of people, whether it be for an immersive art project or Burning Man camp. They have stuff you just don't see in a normal grocery store. If you need 500 cups with matching lids, for example, this is the place to purchase them inexpensively. It's also not as large and crazy as, say, Costco. This is a medium size place, and the parking lot is convenient and easy to access. Bathrooms: Decent. read more

We were at the SF Van Ness yesterday afternoon to purchase the 40 lbs unit of Chicken Breast as our regular item. We always paid $58 for the 40 lbs unit of chicken breast. Mario Gavidia rang us at the cash register for $3.99 per lbs x 38 lbs = $151.62. We asked for the manager for the pricing disputed; Mario replied " I am the manager, price is going up"; I said that this is a bulk item sell in a unit and we purchase a unit twice a month; it cost $58 per unit. Mario said, go somewhere else if you don't want it; so we left the store and paid rest of the items. On their website, it is clearly stated "CHICKEN BREAST BONELESS SKINLESS FRESH #60190, $62.89/unit. See picture. Mario's attitude and poor customer will drive the customers away from the store. District Manager/President need to evaluate his performance. read more

Different name, same good deals on all the stuff I don't have time to hike through Costco for. Also, I can get supplies in either small quantities or in bulk. Dry ice, tongs, aluminum trays, food wraps, food, big ol things of popcorn, drinks, those big cans of nacho cheese, plenty of parking, and easy access to the freeway. The line for the checkout can get long from time to time but it clears through pretty quickly. People coming here want to get in and out, just like you. read more

When you need event supplies and you need them quickly - Cash and Carry is truly a basics wonderland. They pretty much have it all. From plastic table-cloths, to pans, to frozen foods, to cups, to garbage cans, to plastic pins, to bulk ice, to punch-bowls, to candy, to well...name an event staple - and they probably have it. I was especially impressed by this location recently. I needed a bunch of black table-coverings and the staff made sure to order some for me that day. They were also extremely patient with me throughout my multiple trips here and went out of their way to be personable, helpful, and make - what could have been a nightmarish couple of excursions here - pretty darn pleasant. One of my favorite aspects of this place - is their hours. They open early - from around 8 or so in the morning and are open relatively late as well. Regardless of the San Francisco characters (think: a chinese restaurant owner complaining about the already-low prices, a transvestite in flip flops who stood in front of the frozen seafood for no less than 30 minutes in what appeared to be a fugue state, a couple of frat-boy types being loud and tossing meat in preparation of a bbq and everyone in between) and the unique challenges they occasionally present, that guy is helpful and smiles... and, if I offended, let me be the first to say how much I appreciate the characters indeed! Smart Foodservice (Rebrand as of a couple months ago. Before, it was Cash & Carry) is a great restaurant consumables supply store. It has all manner of take-out packaging, cleaning supplies, food prep containers and tools, and of course food. An entire aisle of different liquid flavorings for drinks? Check. All the spices you could ever want? Check. A whole freezer room for meat? Check. This place has tons of things that are of a scale no household could ever need, but also some choice items useful in home kitchens. Cambro containers are great for prepping food or storing dry goods. Stock pots and large mixing bowls are easy to find. Commercial cleaning supplies like heavy duty gloves and solvents are plentiful. Oil is a particularly good thing to get here, like a gallon of coconut oil (3yr expiration) for $30 or gallons of olive and vegetable oil. Even relatively-small sized produce is available, like 5 pounds of strawberries, batches of mushrooms, and spinach. Do note though that these wholesale-quantity items don't always mean the cheapest per unit of product. For example, McCormick ground pepper is about 19 dollars for 16 ounces, but 3 ounces containers are available at Safeway for $3, making it cheaper to buy from Safeway. Butter prices are also competitive at regular grocery stores. With that in mind, always check the price of the item compared to regular-sized quantities to confirm that buying in bulk is actually a better deal. All in all though, I always love coming to Smart Foodservice to see what sorts of commercial kitchen-style tools and foods can fit into my kitchen. This is a great place to go if you need appetizers for a group, a large frozen dessert, large portions of meat, etc. Parking is easy. I'm not sure who normally shops here, maybe mom & pop restaurants and those who like bulk products? I guess the store is sort of like Costco's less successful brother, but that doesn't mean this Cash & Carry doesn't have feelings. As Jessica T mentioned, we were desperately looking for party supplies e.g. table covers, plastic stemware, punch bowls, etc. and wanted to not have to spend a ton of money. This store seems perfect for that sort of situation, and again makes me wonder who normally shops here. Anyway, the big plus to this place was the very friendly staff - they were great about showing us different items, fast at the cash register and even called us a cab and helped us load in! Since I used a credit card for the purchase, I think the store should be called Charge & We Deliver, at least from this yelper's experience. If you want Costco prices without the Costco experience, look no further than Cash & Carry. First of all, there is no membership required. Parking is a breeze, and they have many of the bulk food items that you would find at Costco. It's not as brand-driven - think more basics like Swiss Miss Cocoa and generic brand soup stock. Also, it's a food and paper supply store, so don't expect bins of tube socks. They do have a nice wall of cooking equipment, though. There is a meat room, a dairy room, and a huge walk in ice-cream freezer (yay!) And as Megan G. points out, every flavor of Torani syrup that you could dream of. The employees could not be more nice, selecting boxes for you at checkout and packing your stuff for you. With no check out line and easy to navigate aisles, you can be in and out of there in the same time it would take you to go to a 7-11. Go if you are having a party, stocking a school, or planning to create a lot of food all at once. Don't go if you are looking to buy a tv or a rotisserie chicken. Oh, and contrary to the name, you neither have to have cash nor carry your own things. They take credit cards (no checks, though), and will help you to your car if you need it. Right on yelp and its peerless reviewers, helped me find the orgeat syrup i needed for a cake and steered me to a grocer i will be glad to return to. I searched for torani syrups and a yelp reviewer popped up suggesting a visit to cash and carry. Good thing, i had already visited whole foods and rainbow to no avail. Convenient parking lot, arranged and arrayed like smart and final but much cleaner and well organized than the one in the bayview. Like! There is a refrigerated meat room that i will return to explore, lots of cheap restaurant supplies and party goods galore. I approached a bit nervously, worried that I had to a) possess a business license b) pay in cash A guy stocking teas assured me I did not have to own a biz or carry cash to shop here. HOLY TORANI! They have lots and lots of sugar free (and regular) Torani syrups & some other brand too. A foot long rectangle of cheddar set me back about $10 and a wheel of brie the size of my bicycle tire was about $11. Several well-priced items for the relish tray & nuts a good price too. Maybe I didn't know where to look but I didn't see any alcohol. Since I was shopping for a party, I'd wanted to buy beer too and could not.
