I asked for a simple trim with a number 2 guard, and she started with the shortest setting and left the back a total mess. She didn't seem to understand a thing I was asking for, and it took me complaining twice before she even pulled out her phone to use a translation app. By the end of her second attempt, the side was so short that you could see the skin with uneven patches like shown in the picture. They actually had to bring in someone else to fix her disaster. The hair stylist who came in to help spent 20 minutes blow drying my hair trying to cover up the patches where you could see skin exposure. Honestly, she has no clue what she's doing. One of the worst hair perms I have ever gotten. I have mid length black hair , looking to rejuvenate my perms. Instead it was a permanent perm like when you put your own curls in the night before and it comes out with some weird kinks. The cut was thick at the bottom, that turned into a Bob style. This was nothing to pictures I showed. My hair was actually better before the cut. Picture shown is literally ten minutes after cut. All in all would not return. My hair was done by Naoki. He did try. Worked on it for hours. I felt bad for the guy given its been hard on hair dressers during the midst of COVID. First time here and the colour is great - as I wanted it. i have black/brown hair and I wanted a lighter brown to hide my grey/white hairs coming out underneath the top layer. unfortunately, after an hour under the chemicals, that same patch of grey/white hair is still visible in the back of my head. I think because they are so busy, they're not letting the colour sit longer? the white and greys growing out aren't as visible now as when I had black hair, but still, how is it possible that after all the ammonia and colouring product that the patch has not taken on any colour at all. the cut is great. I often would give a great review and tip if the person would take the time to give a good head massage and scratch when doing the washing - but no, no time. just wash the product, cut and go. it was a really busy place. normally I would go to Maya in Korea town, but I was not heading West. read more

I'm visiting Toronto from the SF Bay Area, and I am not familiar with any of the salons here. I just couldn't take another day of insanely frizzy hair, so I took a chance and booked an appointment with Nana. I chose Kamiya based on good reviews on Yelp and Reddit, and booked with Nana as she is a Level 5 Senior Director. Kamiya's downtown location is very clean and comfortable but not overly fancy. We had a brief consultation during which Nana listened to my concerns and put some thought into what the best solution would be. After we decided on Japanese straightening, Nana got out a price list and a calculator so I'd know right away what it would cost. Then shampoo and head/neck massage, trim and on to the straightening process. Nana did a perfect job getting my hair straight and sleek, starting about 3cm from the root so that my hair would still have some lift, and using gentler chemicals to minimize damage. I am so happy with the experience and final result--just wanted to tell anyone who's considering Japanese straightening or just a haircut that Nana is really great at both. read more

My son was getting married at 5:00 pm. My appointment was 11:00 am. I was extremely nervous, being in a new city, downtown and not sure where the wedding was happening. When I walked in for my appointment I was on the edge of holding it all together. Aimi greeted me and reassured me that the stylists will help me pull myself together. She was the sweetest person. I told her how much my hair itched me and was driving me crazy. She gave me the best shampoo time I have ever felt. She let the shampoo work its way into my scalp. For the first time in weeks my scalp did not itch! The treatment she did on me was so fantastic I didn't want to wash my hair again. (I did a week later though). Then she and Shun blew dried my hair - together they did it!! I felt like a Queen! My hair looked beautiful, and I felt great. I felt like they understood how nervous I was and they did everything the could to calm me down. These two wonderful people even called me an Uber. They stood outside with me and helped me into the car. With all my heart, I truly recommend Aimi and Shun together. I went to dye Nature Ashe hair color here, and the clerk said that because I had bleached my hair before, there would be a color difference between the newly grown part and the bleached part. But after it's done, I was shocked, the top half of my hair was brown, and the bottom part was green. no matter which part is completely not the color I chosed. The clerk then said that they can help me dye my hair the same brown with extra cost, are you kidding me, I pay double the price to dye a color that I don't want it at all?? If the color I choose has to be bleached for color, why don't you do that first??? The hair cutting technique is also extremely poor, after the haircut my bangs are completely untidy! UPDATE: I went back to get my annual root touch up and trim. Motoko-san (level 3 senior stylist) is my go-to hairdresser. She's amazing! Always does such a good job with the coloring and styling of my hair. I simply show her a picture of the style/colour I want and I sit back and enjoy. I've been coming to Kamiya for the past two years. The stylists here are amazing: they offer free consultation and really listen to what you want. I usually get my hair dyed and cut once every 6 months, never had any complaints. They serve coffee and tea while you're waiting. They do a whole head massage + hair wash when you get your hair cut. They have a variety of magazine to browse for inspiration. Even chargers for your phone!! Because I have dry and frizzy hair, i always go to Asian hair salons because of their expertise handling my type of hair. I really recommend Japanese/Korean salons for dying hair, they have a way with color that does minimum damage & longer lasting color. I was introduced to this Japanese hair salon, Kamiya Hairdressing, by a good friend of mine and we made appointments together to get our hairs done :) I was very impressed during my first visit. My appointment was scheduled for 3pm... we literally started around 3pm. Such punctuality - I don't know if it is a Japanese custom to always be punctual but I sincerely appreciate that! I was randomly paired with Motoko that afternoon and she was fantastic from beginning to end. She was professional and very patient with me. Her English wasn't great but I still had a pleasant time talking to her about hair, hair products, hair styles, hair care, hair everything AND about FOOD :) She is just so sweet - I love her ^^ And 3 hours later... voilà! The perfect red - I wanted it to be bright but also natural - I know I'm such a difficult client lol but she delivered. Worse cut ever. I had a haircut with Mai for the first after being Hero's client for ages. Mai haircut is totally random: she is comparable to a child. She does not follow a request and she has no skills or coherence with your hair. A job that a child could do on a doll. She is the priceyest in the shop, but anybody else could do a much better job! The day after her cut I went to cut my hair again because it was awful! I will have to wait a year befor my hair grows enough to do something decent. She speaks in an offensive way about all her colleagues, critisizing everybody. Very bad experience: never again! read more

COVID-19 measures: - If you make appointment over the phone, they ask you standard covid questions about whether you're experiencing symptoms, have travelled, or seen someone infected. - Upon arrival, they ask the same questions, check your temperature with forehead laser, and give you hand sanitizers - You must wear a mask for your entire visit. - All staff were wearing masks. However, one stylist had her mask below her nose, which is a no-no. - Salon run at half capacity. Empty seat between each customer. I really enjoyed my experience aside from the one staff member not wearing her mask properly. It felt safe and clean. My hairdresser, Chiaki (hope I got the spelling right) was very good. Terrible haircut by Keko. Showed picture of desired haircut and started hacking away. Wires of trimmers all tangled up, she was constantly struggling to untangle. Dropped comb and didn't pick up. Never seen such an amateur work at a salon, felt like she was half asleep. Started with trimmer, did not blow dry first. Terrible blending. I told her explicitly to not cut the length, she said she didn't and only thinned out. My hair length was definitely shorter. I told her to stop cutting and look for director as I didn't mind paying more to fix my hair. She was laughing telling the hair stylist to take care of me in Japanese and continued laughing. Didn't seem to really care that she had messed up her client's hair whatsoever. I never expected a Japanese stylist to deliver such terrible customer service and laughing at her client being upset after a terrible haircut. Had to wait for the other stylist, Hiro, to finish cutting of his client. He did an amazing job to fix my hair. He insisted on not charging but I insisted on giving him $15 tips for going above and beyond. read more

Just came back from getting my haircut and still very happy with this place. This place is still extremely reasonable. For under $40, you get your hair shampooed with a scalp massage and a cut. It is hard to describe but instead of level 2, level 3 stylist does have a special skill when she cuts my hair - She twists my hair before she cuts, which is actually not very common based on my own experience. This is the first salon I've been to in the years I've been visiting salons in downtown Toronto where I have been THOROUGHLY satisfied with my haircut. I've been to Seefu Hair on Spadina (great scalp massage and a so-so hair cut), Tony Shamas on Jarvis (exorbitantly expensive and only a so-so haircut and ombre style), and a barber style salon on Church where the stylist raked his long nails torturously every time he combed through my hair :-/. I had Nana whom I assume is a director or senior stylist from the pricing of the haircut. First was the shampoo and head massage, which was relatively brief compared to other salons I've been to, but honestly not a big deal. The head rest was comfy and nails were not raking my skull so I was pretty thrilled. I'm grateful that Nana took the time to explain what could look better within my chosen hairstyle but still took into account what I requested. She really didn't seem rushed and took the time to make sure the cut was great. The salon itself seemed pretty busy, but I was able to do a walk in and get a cut within 30 mins. Final cost was $62.15 minus the tip. Definitely affordable and will definitely come back and request Nana again. Note: Reading other reviews I didn't get tea/coffee/a charger while waiting but they do have free wifi. They also do discounts on Monday/your birthday as per their website, but I didn't get a chance to take advantage of these offers. read more

This place cares enough to make a fuss about my hair. I don't even give my hair that much attention. This is how you know you've found a keeper. And this never happens to me. Waited about 20 minutes before I got a hair wash. I did change my appointment time last minute so I didn't mind. There were tons of magazines to look at and lots of hairstyles to pour over to find the best cut so the wait was really nothing. The salon itself is pretty no frills. Mint green walls, portraits with faded frames hanging off them, somewhat tiny space with about 3 wash stations and 6 stations for clients, but the service is wonderful and friendly. Finally I got led to the wash station. I got a 8-10 minute shampoo and head massage. Most places spent about 3-5 minutes washing your hair. While the head massage by no means compares to the awesome service you get at salons in Taiwan, but this is by far the best massage in North America that I've got. Though funny thing did happen, the salon ran out of hot water. They only had cold water coming out of the sink. No problem. They boiled some water and added it to the cold water and poured it over my hair. Um, creative problem solving but I hope this isn't the norm! Then I met my stylist who went on for 30 minutes cutting my hair, checking both sides for evenness every 2-3 minutes. He's meticulous and very attentive to details. I ended up getting a cut just like I chose from the magazine. So happy! All this hair attention for $35. I feel safe to say that I trust these people with my hair and will be back for more pampering very soon :) PS, they also have wifi so I was able to catch up on emails and news while getting my hair cut. **My Favourite Hair Salon to Date** I got a cut & ombre/balayage from Hiromi and it was the best experience I've ever had at a hair salon. She cut exactly what I asked for and the colour came out better than I expected. She was so sweet and did such an excellent job. I have always had a problem with going to other salons because often they shy away from coloring my hair because it will turn into a colour I "won't" like because I have Asian hair. What I LOVE about this place is that they are very much experienced with Asian hair so they know what you're going for and will give you what you want with their knowledgeable suggestions. It also wasn't terribly expensive. I'm used to spending a lot of money at places that don't do as a great a job so this was the cherry on top to such a great experience! This was my first time going to a salon to bleach and colour my hair and it was the best experience I could have asked for! I called over the phone and was able to get a chemical consultation for the same day, and the appointment to get the services done for two days later. Keiko was my stylist and she was really friendly and sweet, and let me know what she was doing with my hair at each step. She offered me some Japanese green tea before she started. It was a 3.5 hour-long process and my hair came out exactly the way I wanted it to--a beautiful ash blonde with hints of purple fading to a golden blonde, and looks exactly like the picture that I showed her. After the colouring, she blow dried and curled my hair into a lovely style. This picture was taken directly after styling. Came here on a friend's recommendation. I originally booked for the Finch location but was told to come downtown instead due to miscommunication on the booking location. *Tip: when you book from the phone, confirm the location. Their number on google was a bit misleading as it did not differentiate between the two locations (not sure if it's corrected now). Recommended Hairdresser for all first-timers: Keiko I would highly recommend her as she has experience and her English is pretty decent. FYI all of their stylists in downtown location are senior hairstylists. They send the junior ones to the Finch location. Since this is my first time, I didn't really know what colour suited me so I asked for her to use her professional judgement. My only guidelines to her were that I wanted a colour that's healthy, shiny, and good enough for an office environment. I ended up getting a lavender and ash-base brown colour (it looks more like golden brown under the sunlight) as my original hair colour was apparently ash-base dark brown. Price is slightly more on the expensive side (in comparison to the other Asian hair salons) but very good for their location here in the downtown core. The Finch location is cheaper but it makes sense b/c of the lower rent and junior hairstylists working here. They charge $5 more for Japanese hair dye. Prices are posted on their website. Mine ended up being $140 (pre-tax and tip) for full colour. Other Pros - really good quality Japanese hair dye. This is supposed to be less damaging to the hair than the Canadian brand that they carried and it was non-bleach for the golden brown colour they gave me. It's been a month now as i'm writing this and the colour is still here :D - amazing hairwash! They use Nexus shampoo.Keiko spent a good 20minutes washing my hair and massaging my head (including my temples) after it was coloured. The head massage is def a bang for your bucks. - very attentive service and haircut. I absolutely loved Keiko's hair dye and cut. She knew what colour and style suit my face and she'd say no if the pictures that I showed her did not fit me. As befitting of the Japanese culture, when I came in, Keiko already had my station set up for me. They are very good with the timing. Don't be late for your appointment! They also offer free drinks (water, juice or coffee) and candies, this is very good for those hour long hair dye sessions. - Free WIFI, which is great for searching for hair style photos that you forgot to bring Con - location is a bit hard to find as they do not have a huge store sign on the front. I've been in Toronto for 3 weeks for work and desperately needed a haircut before I returned to the states. After searching on Yelp, I opted for Kamiya and made an appointment for the same afternoon. The receptionist was very nice and penciled me in for a cut in 25 minutes. I walked over to Kamiya and waited no more than 5 minutes. My stylist was named Shun. His English was limited, as he just arrived to Toronto 2 months prior, but he knew what to do with my hair. I showed him a picture of what I wanted, gave some suggestions and let him do his thing. He was meticulous with my hair and periodically checked in with me to see if I liked what he was doing. After about 30 minutes, he shampooed my hair. The shampoo/conditioning was great and came with a mini scalp massage. Shun was very friendly and helpful - I would certainly go back to him in the future if I were staying in Toronto again. The rest of the place seemed busy, as there were many girls getting their hair straightened and doing crazy styles. Called on Tuesday for a Friday evening appointment at 6:30. The receptionist on the phone did not speak english and I spoke in Japanese for her to write down my name, number and what I'd like to get done (level 2 designer/haircut). I go in on Friday, they tell me that I do not have an appointment. They asked me over and over again so I showed her the initial call log on my phone. After that, they had me get a different stylist named Haruna (level 1) and she was lovely :) I'm happy with the results! After the cut, the receptionist told me my name was spelled wrong, under men's scheduling, with a wrong phone number... I understand that many are new to Toronto and may not speak fluent English but something as simple as spelling and numbers shouldn't be a problem, especially when I spoke Japanese later on in the conversation. Came here between my work hours for quick colour treatment and haircut. With my hair length past my shoulders i was in need of a shorter hairstyle in time for the hot weather. My appointment was at 11 am, i was seated immediately and Nana was my stylist. She was very good and spoke good English so I was able to tell her what style I wanted. I went in yesterday after booking online. I highly recommend booking online as it made the process so much easier, you can do so through their main website. You can enter in exactly when and what you want, select specific stylists and there's no room for miscommunication. You get a confirmation email and you have the option of receiving a text reminder as well! The experience was also good, my hairdresser spent a lot of attention to detail and asked me questions along the way. She explained to me what she was doing most of the time and I imagine this would help people with anxiety. The hair wash was also great, they take their time and do a lot of scalp massages. I had to wait at least 15 minutes before I was told to get my hair washed by this woman who doesn't seem to have the slightest idea of how hard and painful her technique was. When I finally saw the stylist Hiro, he was very rude and dismissive of what I was asking for. To my disappointment, he proceeded to cut my hair with total disregard for what I asked for and left me in the middle of the haircut several times to tend to another client. She took her time cutting my hair and it shows in the quality of the cut. I got so many compliments versus other times when I've paid 3x the price of what it cost to go to her. Had a spectacular experience with a newer Level 2 stylist, Yusetsu. I had to make a last minute appointment and this was my first time at this particular salon - was a little anxious as I was taking quite a bit of hair off. Yusetsu was attentive, kind, and very clearly had his techniques down from years of experience. The shampoo portion of the appointment included an awesome temple/head massage, and my haircut was exactly what I asked for (which I brought photos of - highly recommend doing this). I always went to different hairdressers to get my haircut until 2011. In 2011, I finally met Max and haven't had anyone else cut my hair since! He always does such a good job and styles it so nicely. Kamiya's prices are also amazing for Toronto and it's always a great experience. Getting your hair shampooed is the best part - each person who has ever shampooed my hair did an amazing job. No offense to people who really like this salon, but I had a terrible coloring experience and my hair looks so blotchy after last friday's visit I have dark hair and wanted a balayage that transitions into a dark mahogany. In theory I shouldnt need to bleach my hair to achieve this since it was only a couple shades lighter than my natural hair...but the hairdresser convinced me that I needed to do it and I trusted his opinion as an expert. As soon as he started bleaching i realized something was not right as there was no transition from bleached hair to unbleached hair, the edges were abrupt...i didnt say anything since again, i thought they knew what they were doing... After bleach he went on to color my WHOLE HEAD mahogany...and when everything was finally washed and dried it became clear that it was blotchy, with no gradience/transition whatsoever. They ended up charging me over $250 for the bleach + balayage + trim(for the price of a haircut). Its been a week and after a few washes my hair is turning brassy/orangy.... If you still choose to come to this salon...at least do your research and get the best guy possible to do it instead of a newb -.- read more

Went in for a second blow dry and a cut this time. Cool, she wants to cut my hair dry. Not cool - asking for a blow dry and leaving frizzy. I do not even have frizzy hair on the regular, how did it get frizzy? I ask for volume and end up having my hair flat ironed (again?)...I hope Nana was slightly embarrassed because I do what I do when I get pissed, I just took the brush from her and the blow dryer and started showing her how to hold it taught and blow dry properly. she wasn't even using the attachment nor blowing down the cuticle of the hair. I'm doing an updated review because I went back to get my hair re-straightened after about a year and although the service was still amazing, I was not impressed with the final results. My hair was fried, and the damage was irreversible. I don't have confidence in the straightening process. The real Japanese straightening process leaves the hair shiny, slick and silky. After 3 hours and $300, my hair was left burnt and permanently frizzy. My only hope is to wait for it to grow out. When it comes to hairdressing, I believe in consistency. I would rather pay more for a consistently excellent service, because I really only get my hair done twice a year. Therefore, I won't be coming back here. read more

I've been here twice now, once just to get my bangs cut and once for a real cut. Both times the place was incredibly busy. I got my hair cut and styled by Aki, who did a fantastic job. I brought in a photo and she basically made it happen. Not too much chit chat, which is my preference. I kind of hate it when stylists try to get me to talk. Anyhow, I love the new 'do, even a few days later, which is not usual, since my hair, when short, is much like Christian Slater's heart - untamed. It's cowlick city, curly in spots, wavy in others, straight for the rest. It's kind of a hot mess. But she gave me some tips on how to style it and the cut she gave me holds up really well, even with minimal styling. I will definitely be back again.
