Unpleasant encounter at Ace this morning. I had my head snapped off by a cashier who failed to see me waiting patiently in line and then sent me away when I approached her cash register (light was on) in turn. That was ok but the additional and needless verbal nastiness and stink eye to follow was not warranted nor appreciated. I have a tough job, too. It is surprising how much useful hardware they can pack into this store. It's worth checking out before you take a long trip to Hilo or Kona and use too much gas. They have a good-size selection of gardening tools (expected for a farming community), but also mouse/rat traps and interesting gadgets near the entrance. When you need help, seek out someone because they will help you navigate the aisles, since the rationale behind the layout isn't always apparent. The last time I went I happened to see selection of bathroom safety gadgets that can be helpful for folks with mobility issues. I wouldn't have expected this type of specialty item here. Good to know, just in case. I would have given 5 stars but I was dismayed to see how the craft section has been drastically scaled back. They still have a craft section, including Honokaa Dragons stickers which were cool, but it is much smaller than before, it saddened me a little. read more

I've been in many Ace Hardwares in the mainland and all over Hawaii. I've been ignored in some and completely forgotten in others. I am totally impressed with the Waimea Ace Hardware. If they dont ask you if you need help at the door, they WILL catch up to you inside somewhere. On top of that, most of the staff is knowledgeable on DIY projects and creative on ones they never heard of. They make you feel like you're welcomed there and not suspicious like you stole something. If they dont have it in stock or In-Store, they help you get it. Overall they are the best. (I was gonna say best Ace Hardware, but its gonna be Hands Down, the best Hardware Store PERIOD.) read more

Prices are a little higher than Home Depot and Amazon but if you need something for your Yard or gardening in a quickie or need in person advice, this is your place! This is def a cross between a City Mill and they def have a craft area on the R side of the store when you enter. They have seasonal items especially for Thanksgiving and Christmas. And the day after, they go on 50-75% on clearance. They also have a regular clearance section year round outside the store on all kinds of random appliances/items. One of the awesome things to check out is the gardening area- lots of local plants like the Ohia Lehua also many smaller sprouted herbs like basil, oregano, tomatoes, etc- And all the fixings for gardening as well- tools, soil, mulch, wiring/caging etc Leonard was super helpful and when he didnt know the answer he told us which ones the professional comes in and purchase- indicating it was the superior product- and in this case it was like $0.20 more Thanks Leonard! Usulally have not had many issues with this small town store. Yet, the worst is when you are charged for an item, just to come home to find it is not in the bag!!!! Alcolade is give in to Neve, for the print a swift location of the missing purchase. Still gas at our local gasoline station is at $ 4:48 per gallon. So we will end up spending more on fuel than product purchased. So who is the loser? The consumer of coarse. But I want to really give my gratitude to Neve in the Waimea/Kamuela Ace Store for doing a job well done which is not much seen in this time and age. What can I say, I LOVE ACE! I live in Waimea and Ace has saved me so many shopping trips into Kona. Ace is a small store but it is amazing at what is stocked on their shelves. The Waimea store is combo hardware and craft store so the inventory is very diverse. One of the local jokes in Waimea is how early in the summer Ace has Christmas crafts in the store for all the crafts people to get early enought to have done for Christmas. There is also a garden center in the back of the store - that's my favorite part. Do you remember the jingle ' Ace is the place with the friendly, helpful hardware man'? Well at this store, you also need to add hardware woman! I had bought some plants at Ace and a couple of weeks later the cashier was asking me how my tomatoe plants were doing. This is one of the joys of living in a small town like Waimea. You get to know people and people get to know you. And the people at Ace are great, they'll help you find that little screw, or make those keys or whatever it is you need. In Waimea, we're lucky we have ACE! read more

I already miss this place. I went to the Big Island to attend a wedding for a friend. This friend recommended Ben Franklin Craft stores to find unique Japanese Craft items. Well while in Waimea, we stepped into this Ben Franklin/Ace Hardware store and 4 hours and $150.00 spent later, I felt I saved a plane ticket to Japan and had a great Hawaiian craft adventure. My husband and I were on our honeymoon and one morning we discovered that our camera shutter got stuck. we had gone to Hapuna beach the day before and apparently some sand may have gone in. We didn't want to have to buy another camera so we stopped by radio shack on mamalahoa hwy to see if we can borrow their air compressor. They were not helpful at all, they told us to go to a computer store which wasn't even opened that day. We also didn't want to buy an air compressor because we weren't sure if a) it would work and b) if we can fly back to nj with us. Out of desperation, we decided to stop by ace hardware and to our pleasant surprise we met the friendliest staff ever. I want to thank FRANK AND KELA who were extremely helpful!!
