Even without the familial connection, I'd be absolutely in love with this place. Family and friends gathered this past weekend for a memorial hike in honor of my dad, who passed in 2007. Leon and Nellie went out of their way to accommodate us, down to even offering additional rooms when some extra guests appeared and getting up extra early to make us to-go egg sandwiches we could take long on our hike up Mt. Washington. Both our group and the other guests at the Inn were treated like treasured friends in their home and it felt like a big old family reunion for us all. The Spruce Moose is the perfect location---a short walk to the adorable North Conway village, and a quick drive to countless hiking options. The decor makes you feel like you're visiting friends in a luxurious mountain home. Zeb and Avery, the two trusty labs, greet you at the door and will cuddle you on the couch for hours if you let them. The beds are comfy, and the rooms contain no tvs so you can truly enjoy the nature around you (though there IS wi-fi if you need your technology fix). Breakfast in the morning is delicious and filling. Tea and coffee are available at any time. It was an amazing weekend, in no small part to Leon and Nellie. However, the most impressive thing about our experience was the personal contact with Jody the Owner/Manager. She was accommodating, friendly and really a hands on manager as we saw her out shoveling the sidewalk Saturday during the snowstorm!!! We stayed there for 2 days and for the whole stay - We did not even meet with the owners. it was 'contact-free' stay :P we did not get much time to explore the hotel surroundings, but they have a campfire (woods at a nominal charge) with cute chairs, also saw a swimming pool (ofcourse in summer), and what a sight it would be, having a campfire and river flowing near to you. The room was a little small - but sufficient. separate bins for trash (NH rule)- hot water - though sometimes you feel the heat is not sufficient in the room, but i guess its okay. One of the greatest features of this property is its location. Being away from the busyness and uptightness of uptown was spectacular, yet only a six-minute drive for the benefits, which for me primarily meant the eateries and pubs. I ate in, I dined out, and I grabbed takeout. And each time I made that pleasant little drive back to the village, I smiled. My favorite memory: Sitting on the screened-in deck of the cottage at night with my feet up, laboring away on my computer with a beer, watching the campfire Matt lit and the people gathered around enjoying company in nature. My wife and I stayed here recently as part of a concert package with Stone Mountain Arts Center. The Inn handled all the ticketing arrangements and provided a shuttle to get us to and from the venue. That all went very smoothly. Tim, our host, was friendly and welcoming (we know Bobby is the other half of this team, but we didn't get a chance to meet him). Our room was quaint and cozy, breakfast was yummy, and the whole vibe was great. We didn't really get a chance to check out the area, but Crystal Lake is nearby and this would be a great place to chill out for few days even if there wasn't a concert involved. The only reason I'm giving the location 1 star is because of all the help provided by the housekeeping manager in regards to helping find someplace to stay BECAUSE MY PREPAID ROOM WAS SOLD TO SOMEONE ELSE although I talked to someone from the hotel earlier in the day to confirm my booking prior to my 3.5 hour drive. My room was in the main inn, there are 5 rooms and parking for only 3 cars unfortunately with the motorhome that took up the majority of the small parking lot. In the days of covid this bed and breakfast has no breakfast. Additionally there is no staff and self check in consists of the room door being left open with the room key in the room (allegedly, unfortunately I was not able to experience this). Upon arrival I walked my things up to the third floor which is where my room was, tried the door and it's locked. Knocked on the door and there was no answer. Called the phone number that I had for the hotel and it went to voice mail. No room, nobody to ask about it. A couple happened to be heading out for dinner so I asked them if there was any phone numbers in their room or similar in the event that anything happened and they needed to contact management. Thank goodness there was a number to call. I was able to get in touch with the head of housekeeping. She was super nice and came to the inn to see what was going on. This is when I learned that that there was someone already in my room. This inn was full so out of luck there. They have a second property, The Will's Inn about 4 miles down the road where they were able to put me. I'll review that place separately. It was shared with me that I would receive a full refund for my room, as well as a gift certificate to be used at a later time. Neither of these things happened. Stay away from this place.
