This is a truly hidden gem. On a dead end street at the beginning of Harrison Ave where it's "interrupted" by I-75, there's plenty of street parking. You've got to be observant or you might miss the place. Housed in what I suspect is an old factory and operated by a skeleton crew, this place gets it right. Order at the counter and they'll bring your food to whatever eclectic spot you choose to sit. The food is prepared where you can clearly see the cook. The care taken when preparing the food seems extraordinary in today's automated rush rush world. I would recommend this place without hesitation. This was a great find for a recent Saturday lunch. It was a warm day for April and it was pretty warm inside, but luckily we got a picnic table in the shade right out front. There seemed to be just one front of house person taking orders and pouring drinks, so there was a bit of a wait to order. They were unfortunately out of the cheese/onion spätzle so my fiance ordered currywurst instead. The rest of us ordered schnitzel with buttered spätzle. When the plates were set down, my finance immediately said he had plate envy. The schnitzels were huge and amazing. The buttered spätzle was the best I've had locally, both in texture and taste. The pork was pounded thin and fried but remained so tender and juicy. The currywurst was a bit of a let down for my finance. He said it seemed like regular wursts, with regular ketchup and some curry powder sprinkled on top. There was also not much ketchup. Maybe we are just used to Germany where they are swimming in a curry ketchup. The potatoes were great however. Overall, I would definitely recommend Kantine and hope to be back when they have the spätzle with onions and cheese. read more

What to say first....Let's start with the friendly faces that greet you as you enter this fabulous eatery. Every single person is as kind and helpful as the next. They are also kind to one another! You'll order at the counter by the menu board. They'll give you a number, ask if you're dining inside or out, and you find yourself some seating. Easy peasy. Oh, and if you fancy a beer, try the Veltins Pilsner --I typically do not even like beer, but this one goes down smooth! Next--the food. It's all delicious, but you'll definitely want try the goulash or bavarian fleischpflanzerl, whenever they run it as a special. And their spaetzle is, by far, the best I've ever tasted, which pairs beautifully with the jäegerschnitzel!!! Yum! Please do not forget to leave some room (or take home) for dessert. Bienenstich cake (bee sting cake) is filled with a splendid custard filling and topped with a layer of candied almonds. Pairs wonderfully with coffee. The people here are very kind. I came in for Easter and they were short-staffed due to call outs. We reserved a table for Easter. The food was good and the drinks were poured heavy. I got the sweet pancakes which had nutella, bananas inside, and strawberry outside. They taste like crepes. The environment is family friendly. When you get drinks you have to individually pick them up, but they bring the food to you. I would definitely come back and try the Avocado Tomato Egg sandwich. My wife and I went on an underground tour of Cincinnati and learned about the German beer making history of the city. One question I asked was - Is there a decent German restaurant left in town? Went to Kantine on a recommendation from a friend. This is in an unexpected and out of the way location located in what looks to be a former warehouse, decorated in a unique retro style. You place an order at the counter then the food is delivered to your table while they pour you a draft that you take on your own. Okay, no one comes here by accident. It's in a warehouse at the end of a dead-end street; you have to know that it's there. It has a small parking lot and then you need to park out on the street, and you have to walk up from the parking lot to find the entrance, which was propped open to allow for entry. Inside, the atmosphere is very laid-back: a small space, a scattering of tables -- it's a cross between a beer hall and a German friend's home. You order at the counter and they'll bring it out to you. I ordered the Wurstsalat -- basically a salad of sausage, pickles and cheese. This is German food -- there wasn't a piece of lettuce or other salad green in sight. But it was plentiful, delicious and authentic, with a nice vinegar dressing to give it a zing. It came with generous slices of Blue Oven wholewheat bread that was hearty and filling and complimented the salad well. For dessert I had their "Bee Sting cake:" decadent layers of cake, caramel, and a cream filling that was delicious and satisfying. This is definitely legit food -- made from scratch on site, and so authentic to the German culture you expected to see a generation of family pictures on the wall. One proviso: this is a place to savor. The food is made from scratch, so most dishes (excepting the salad and other cold dishes) will take 45 minutes to prepare, while you conversate with friends and enjoy the ambience. I really like this place. the staff is friendly and attentive and the food is really good, with very authentic German fare, along with flatbreads and other offerings so there is something for everyone. When I was there, Rob Lowe (not that one) was playing piano and singing tune fro the great American songbook: Sinatra, Bennett, and Barry Manilow.
